My sister recently had a disturbing experience at a dog shelter that others should be aware of. A…read moredog got loose due to what seemed like poor handling by a volunteer. When she raised concerns, Katie explained volunteers only receive pamphlets, not hands-on training, due to limited funding. While budgets are tight, safety should still be a priority. What stood out most was the lack of accountability. Katie dismissed the situation, saying "it happens," and suggested our small dog may have caused it, which felt deflective. My sister was shaken and looking for reassurance and steps to prevent future incidents, but none were provided. The dog now wears a muzzle, raising further concerns about how situations are managed. While shelters face challenges, proper training and accountability are essential. Visitors should be cautious, especially with their own pets, how can they say they are for the community when you have workers having no empathy and laughing in your face.

I was trying to adopt after a recent loss of mine. All was well through adoption process an the staff was kind an helpful an quick. I was thrilled to be adopting an was so ready to have a new baby to give a home too. Unfortunately within days of her being with me she was clearly sick an that night her spay incision opened up an her guts where spilling. She was kept in an area with no high jumping an alone with everything she needed. An I know her cut did not looked properly sealed when I had gotten her to begin with. I've had to spend more then I have an rely on donation to help with her surgery an treatment on top of this I will now be having to take my other cat in because he managed to get her sickness only twice as bad. Im so disappointed an disgusted with this experience. Please still adopt just make sure your baby is safe to come home. Or take them to a vet right after for a check up.

This is a public service…read moreannouncement and complaint on Animal Rescue Shelter, a 501(c)3, organization at 12500 S FM 1541, Amarillo Texas. They are a no kill animal rescue that advertise dogs, cats, and possibly other animals for adoption. My complaint is I reached out to them regarding a dog they had posted on Facebook to possibly adopt. We were denied an application because we did not live within an hour drive from Amarillo. They do physical in person only inspections of applicants home, fence, and shelter for the animal. I offered to send a video, offered references, offered my vets contact information and still they would not even allow me to complete an application. I thought the goal of a rescue shelter is to remove animals. I have had dogs and cats my whole life and probably taken better care of them than my family. I raised boxers for over 10 years amd sold puppies all over Texas and Oklahoma. I am heartbroken that they wouldn't even try to help us. Mike called, my daughter in law Aj Williams, called. They were finally very rude. If you donate to a shelter do NOT donate to this one!

While you could argue that this makes sense for large animals who need to be let out for exercise, small dogs can be taken out with a collar to use the rest room and even trained to go out in a yard. Additionally, they know that the highly adoptable pets are small dogs and go on the local dog pound website daily to reserve small dogs for adoption. This would make sense IF the dogs at the dog pound were available for adoption by pet owners until their scheduled kill-date and were only then saved by local rescues, but instead this prevents people living in apartments or duplexes from finding small dogs homes. It is tragic to see something as wonderful and loving as adopting a pet perverted into economic discrimination by a hateful, immoral agency like this one.

This might be a bit long, but it's important to me. I…read morecurrently live in California (yes... I know), but I spent 25 years in Amarillo, where my longtime veterinarian was Dr. David Faulkner. Anyone who knows him understands he's a tough act to follow. Since his retirement, I was referred to Dr. Ryan McKnight at Canyon Road Animal Hospital. Veterinary care in California has become incredibly expensive, especially when anesthesia is involved. For my older dog, Dexter, who needed a dental cleaning and a molar extraction, the estimate in California was around $3,500. Even factoring in travel and a couple of nights in a hotel, coming back to Amarillo was still about one-third of the cost. I want to take a moment to acknowledge something important. I can be very intense when it comes to my pets--they mean everything to me--and I know that sometimes I let my emotions get the best of me. During the process, there were a few moments where I became upset on the phone. Looking back, I believe those situations were simply miscommunications. I was expecting one thing, and when I heard something different, I reacted before fully understanding the situation. Later, I realized that nothing had actually changed--it was just a matter of incomplete information. To anyone on the staff who had to take those calls, I sincerely apologize. I truly regret those moments and appreciate your patience more than I expressed at the time. Most importantly, Dexter received excellent care. The staff was kind, efficient, and professional, and Dr. McKnight was not only highly skilled but also genuinely compassionate. It means a great deal to me to know my dog was in such good hands. I can wholeheartedly recommend Dr. McKnight to anyone looking for an experienced, patient, and caring veterinarian. Thank you again to everyone at Canyon Road Animal Hospital, and please accept my sincere apologies for any frustration I caused along the way. Melanie
