My sister recently had a disturbing experience at a dog shelter that others should be aware of. A dog got loose due to what seemed like poor handling by a volunteer. What stood out most was the lack of accountability. Katie dismissed the situation, saying "it happens," and suggested our small dog may have caused it, which felt deflective. My sister was shaken and looking for reassurance and steps to prevent future incidents, but none were provided. The dog now wears a muzzle, raising further concerns about how situations are managed. While shelters face challenges, proper training and accountability are essential. Visitors should be cautious, especially with their own pets, how can they say they are for the community when you have workers having no empathy and laughing in your face. read more

This isn't for amarillo human services it's for AMW. I'd honestly never be the one to leave a poor review because not everyone is perfect all the time but I'm extremely disappointed. I was trying to adopt after a recent loss of mine. All was well through adoption process an the staff was kind an helpful an quick. I was thrilled to be adopting an was so ready to have a new baby to give a home too. Unfortunately within days of her being with me she was clearly sick an that night her spay incision opened up an her guts where spilling. She was kept in an area with no high jumping an alone with everything she needed. An I know her cut did not looked properly sealed when I had gotten her to begin with. I've had to spend more then I have an rely on donation to help with her surgery an treatment on top of this I will now be having to take my other cat in because he managed to get her sickness only twice as bad. Im so disappointed an disgusted with this experience. Please still adopt just make sure your baby is safe to come home. Or take them to a vet right after for a check up. read more

This place is MISERABLE. It needs to shut down and reopen with new staff and regulations. The place is understaffed with seemingly apathetic people or maybe they just seem that way b/c they are overworked. The cages where the dogs are kept are unorganized and FILTHY. There is literally poop everywhere you look. My friend who got her dog there had the worst experience any first-time dog owner could have.... She went to look at the pups and fell in love with one little baby that she quickly adopted. Even though the dog had been there 9 days already, they apparently had to hold her for another week or so, because they hadn't done the vet checkup (seems a little late, no?) She went every single day to visit her pup. Anyway, she finally got to take her home and right away she discovered ticks (which the humane shelter vet didn't). Ok, fine. It happens. Then she started noticing this terrible cough. Already long story short, it turns out her dog had distemper and the vet hospital said that they had already been putting down a lot of dogs at the shelter for it (which they failed to mention). Eventually, the disease reached the neurological state and after 3 weeks of owning her first dog, she had to put her down. I can't even tell you how heartbroken and miserable my friend is at the loss of her puppy. There needs to be a major change at this place...it's a giant mess with irresponsible people. read more

Writing this review from Denver, CO with so many tears running down my face!!! How in the world could you euthanize a pregnant, going through labor "vicious" dog?!?! There are hundreds of people that would've gave her and her pups a chance. The fact she was only there for a few days and "the right call" was to kill her. You are not humane at all not even close! One opinion is what killed this sweet momma. 4 vets wanted to put my dog to sleep but guess what I went to the 5th one and she saved her life. She's healthy and happy now 2 years later, so SCREW YOU FOR KILLING A DOG THAT HAD A CHANCE AT LIFE BUT YOU DECIDED TO TAKE THAT FORM HER! I just want you to know that I adopted a dog in Denver that was transported from this shelter by the ASPCA. The dogs that ASPCA brought to Colorado were all adopted within a few days. Little June Bug has a happy home, loving family and walks in the Colorado mountains every day. read more

It utterly amazes me how this joke of a business. You go to adopt a pet and first off the workers or helpers assisting with the event have had no training in customer service skills. They act like they are there by force and not desire hence leading to less than sub standard customer service. Next off you complete a questionnaire and you're asked if you intended to declaw the kitten once at appropriate age and you honestly answer yes due to furniture tear up and your turned away. Completely ridiculous! It's no wonder there are an abundance of animals that need good homes. But these ridiculous organizations place stipulations on you when the animals will be living in your home not there's. I have had my 2 dogs and 2 cats for a very long time now and am an extreme pet lover. But to be turned away. Complete joke! Sad that someone who honestly wants and will give great care to the animal is told NO is better off youthenized because that is what will end up happening. Poor baby kitty. They don't handle euthanasia. There are two individually staffed offices, employees not interchangeable. It. Is. Not. The. Same. Team. Please ask them. I've gotten 3 cats and a dog there and am currently fostering for them. I've never seen anything but a team of employees going above and beyond to dish out results that are absolutely staggering, seeing as their resources are so lagging compared to those given to, say, Austin tx, population: surrendered pet ratio taken into account. The Humane Society, at the time of the pregnant Pitbull incident, handled only the dogs that left out the front door. They worked tirelessly to get animals adopted, fostered, and tagged for rescue, and very successfully! As there's been a pretty recent shift, they no longer handle adoptions. However they still get animals sent to rescues all over the country and fostered. Wonderful place. read more

We adopted both our kittens from here. The people were very kind, and helpful on getting us set up with shots and meds. I read some of the negative reviews. The fact that they are overfilled is a problem with the people in our city not a pound problem. they are doing the best they can with the circumstance. My dogs had gotten loose and when I went up there to retrieve them they told me I had to pay $300.00 dollars to get them out I didn't have that kind of money but my dogs had a good home never slept outside and very much Loved. So instead of being humane and giving me my dogs they said they would have to be uthanized if I didn't get them in 3days. Well I couldn't come up with the money so instead of saving there lives they put them down. It's a horrible place and they should be shut down. It's about money and not saving life's or giving seconded chances to those animals it's everything but humane... read more

they picked up my dog because the maintance man told the manangers at the apartment that my dog bit him the dog was on the leash and did not bite him in fact he scraped his hand while he was on the roof, anyhow my dog was taken for ten days, during the ten days my dog was starved so bad you can see her ribs and every day that I went to visit some guy kept mentioning they should kill her. read more

This place is disgusting. I went in at 630 and picked out a kitten from the last room the cats go before they are euthanized and i was turned away because it was 645 and since "adoptions take 20 minutes we cant do it in time before we close at 7". I can not believe a place that is supposed to care for animals cant stay 5 minutes to make sure one of there animals, in risk of being killed, gets adopted. We felt bad for the kitten so we came back the next morning the second they opened and it still took them an hour and a half to adopt me the cat when we already went in knowing what cat we wanted. During this i got to watch multiple of their employees stand around plus the lady that was taking care of us just stopped helping us multiple times while we were sitting right in from of her!!! We would have walked out but we felt so bad for the kitten that we couldnt leave it at that terrible place. I would really suggest not dealing with them and help out one of the other shelters in town. read more

This place is terrible they must eat the animals at are there and have no compassion to the animals on their last days they spend there . All the dogs seem to be terrified or angry toward people as if the workers hit them. The cats all seem to be afraid of the people that go to see them and as I was leaving a worker was putting up a kitten about 8 weeks old and seems as if her arm was being ripped off from a small kitten who was trying to get out the cage. So the lady gripped it by the neck and and choked the cat! That is a terrible way to treat animals! This place needs to be closed and reopened with a new group of workers! read more

This is the worst place ever! I looked at a cat that was meowing all the time and I voiced my concerns. They told me it was just because he was in a cage. I was still worried so a lady that is the adoption person at Petsmart called them back and she said the ladies at the shelter said he stops meowing when you take him out of his cage. I told them I could not have a cat that meows all night! That I would bring him back if he did and they said fine! Also, I was only getting him as a companion for my Persian cat. So, I adopted him and took him home. Very loveable, but NEVER STOPPED MEOWING. He also was very aggressive and hurt my Persian. I know that is normal until they get to know each other. Then when I took him back after 2 nights of no sleep, they were very rude to me and said that I was told by them he meowed constantly!!!! Really???? I was the one who voiced my concern, not them. They will say anything to get you to take one of their pets. I told them they better put it in his file, so the next person knows. read more
