Dr. Sikes is an amazing surgeon and such a kind person. Our vet referred us to him for TPLO surgery for our dog, and from the initial consultation his expertise and compassion were obvious. His pre-op and post-op instructions were detailed and clear, and he really went out of his way to make sure our dog recovered well. He even came in on a Saturday and met us at the clinic when our dog needed an antibiotic -- something that had nothing to do with the surgery. He said, "He's my patient. Of course I'm going to take care of him." 10/10 would recommend. Can't imagine having a better experience. read more

Dr. is brilliant and talented, his staff is so lovely and caring, my dogs (yes, MULTIPLE!) have been treated for super severe injuries and their outcomes have been FANTASTIC! Two of our CH. males had different performance injuries and Although long recovery, BOTH returned to full competition condition! One with a TPLO injury, and one requiring a pan carpal arthrodesis. Dr. Sikes was very nice and after an examination of her mass, he concluded the mass was attached to her rib [previously the mass was said to not have any rib attachment]. He was very honest and said this would be a big surgery that would need to be done at a larger facility as this would also require a CT scan prior to surgery. He recommended specialty veterinarians who had the diagnostic equipment and expertise for such a complex surgery and gave my gentle giant some attention and cookies. Dr. Sikes loves his patients! I can tell, he loves what he does and he loves animals . He even took me in the back area to show me the facilities and how he has 24 hour Care after surgery. I didn't even ask he just offered. He's generous, kind and a character ! Even though my dog barked at him, it did not take long for him to convince her she was safe and in good hands. Shes a bit fearful of men, but he worked that out right away. She warmed up to him quickly. He explained everything step by step and repeated it when I returned the following day to pick up my girl Zero after her TPLO surgery. The staff was friendly and attentive to my pup. If you have any questions, or don't understand what he is saying, he will make you feel stupid. I'm a "not stupid" engineer and walked out of his office feeling stupid and insulted. I would not recommend his bedside manner, and if I had to do it over again I would walk out of his office as soon as his temper flared up and go elsewhere. As it is his diagnosis doesn't match what is seen on the x-rays, so I'll be seeking another opinion. An expensive waste of my time since I had to take a day off to visit his office. read more

The short version is that if you have a docile and submissive animal and you, personally, are careful to never voice concerns, you will likely have a positive experience. Dr. Sikes is, I believe, a good surgeon , but his quick temper and impatience is a very poor fit for some people and not good for more sensitive pets. First, the good points. The office staff is some of the nicest, most efficient and helpful people I've encountered in a veterinary practice. I also believe the doctor did a good job on the surgery, given its challenging nature. He competently removed 3 tumors, two of which were in very difficult places on my dog's elbows. Post surgery, when one elbow wasn't healing properly, he was able to fit my dog in to re-suture (with an overnight stay for observation) with only a day's notice. He charged only a very nominal fee of $240.00 for the second operation. The price for the initial surgery was also very reasonable, in my opinion. Dr. Sikes was helpful in explaining bandaging, sending home supplies, and providing me with an online resource that makes protective gear for dogs with joint problems. For all of this, I am appreciative. However, enough troubling things have happened that I have elected to continue treatment for the remaining problematic elbow elsewhere. My first warning sign happened during the very first office visit. The doctor initially wanted to take a biopsy from a tumor on one of her elbows. I asked if he could instead take it from the tumor on her leg, because I was worried about the pressure points on her elbows. Dr. Sikes became angry and said that he of course would do whatever I thought best. Oh boy, I thought, here we go. I do take responsibility for starting out on a bad foot with him. I should have known to phrase my concern differently, given his age and obvious background. There are no do-overs, though, and I left the office sufficiently concerned about dealing with Dr. Sikes that I spent the afternoon calling around for other options. I found none with the time to see my dog before the weekend, and I was worried about putting off surgery for too long. The operation appeared to go well, but for the next 3 days my dog's foot was bruised and swollen. This foot was not an area he had operated on, and I was worried that my dog's treatment might have been overly rough. This worry continued to grow during successive office visits. My dog would walk with office staff but refused to budge when Dr. Sikes took her leash or when she saw him. I personally saw him harshly yank her by the neck to get her to follow him, which is not something I have seen a veterinarian or tech do to an animal. Ever. Everything came to a head during the last check-up. I had been told to bring her in fasting in case she needed to be sedated for suture removal and bandage check. My dog was frantic and wild as I walked her up to the office. I initially thought this was due to a very active, 1 year old German Shepherd puppy who had been confined too much for 2.5 weeks. The staff took her to a back room, and I heard her cry out in pain. When Dr. Sikes finally asked me into an exam room, he was angry. He told me my dog was out of control. When I started to respond. he cut me off, citing his years of experience. He assured me he knew what he was talking about. He told me that the only reason she had ever been up for adoption (yes, she's a rescue) is that she's an out of control dog (quite untrue, as she was ill and overly subdued when I found her) . He said that 4 people had been unable to hold her down and that I would never be able to change her bandage...a bandage that I had easily changed over the weekend. He said it wasn't good to have to abuse her when she needed to be treated. He then immediately walked back the "abuse" statement, saying that's not what he really meant. Why did he feel the need to have 4 people "abuse" my dog, when I had clearly been told to have her fasting so she could be sedated for a bandage check and suture removal? I decided then and there that Animal Surgical group is not a safe place for my dog. A few days later, when her elbow was clearly still not healing properly, I made an appointment with another doctor. She walked into the new office nicely. The new doctor checked her bandage and wound without incident, with only me petting my dog's head to keep her quiet. I must conclude that the wild behavior I was seeing at Dr. Sikes' office was not due to an active, young dog who had been confined for too long, but instead it was due to her terror of that place. I have learned a valuable lesson to follow my first instincts, even if it means putting off surgery. read more

We ended up coming to Dr. Sikes last fall when one of our fur babies came home with a shattered elbow. Our first opinion for treatment from the emergency clinic was to amputate, and we just could not believe that would be the outcome for our beloved cat, who was a year and half old. We asked the attending ER doctor if there could be any alternative, and began calling other vet offices in the 5 cities in hopes of someone who would be willing to take on Watson's case. As it turned out, Dr. Sikes was the answer. Over the last six months, he has been a miracle worker with our cat. He reviewed his x-rays and offered a glimmer of hope to save the arm. We had no doubt that Watson would pull through an amputation, being so young, but equally, we wanted to try to save the arm due to his age as well. We ended up meeting the gal (cannot remember her name) who invented the material Dr. Sikes used with the badly damaged elbow. Everyone, his staff, the nurses, Dr. Sikes, and the angel who invented that material, all went above and beyond to service Watson and us. They were there during the first weekend bringing him home, answering our panicked calls, and tending to him with amazing care. We greatly appreciated the aftercare offered post surgery, I have had some experience with dogs post surgery, but never a cat. The follow-up care of checking his robot metal skeleton was always exceptional--we *really* enjoyed seeing what bandage coverings the nurses would give him, and always needed the stress relief laughs they provided. Today, Watson has been given the best possible hope at walking like a normal cat. He does have some lameness, but his ability to walk, jump, and most of all "bake" with us has been restored. My cat, Evee, was treated by Dr. Sikes and I am very satisfied and grateful. Evee broke her leg while climbing up a wall and getting stuck in the eaves of my house. After going to two different veterinarians in San Luis Obispo who told me it was more than likely sprained and needed time to heal. When she did not heal and her injury got worse, I eventually found Dr. Sikes who gave me a reasonable price surgery on her leg Overall, I feel my experience with Dr. Sikes was positive, despite my stress over the state of my little Evee cat. Evee normally very skittish and loving just to me, despite my household of family and other pets. Dr. Sikes eased my mind by showing me his cat that he has in the back office area. We visited Dr. Sikes about a month ago regarding our dog (Blue). He was hit by a car crossing the street and fractured his right front leg. We went to local veterinarians all of which quoted extremely outrageous prices. We even went down to the LA county to look for specialists and they recommended us to Dr. Sikes. Dr. Sikes has been so professional and helpful throughout this whole process and we couldn't be happier with his work. His whole staff is friendly, especially Bre who is the receptionist/assistant. This Dr Sikes is a complete rip-off. He saw my Cavalier on September 25, 2017 for a corn on her left front paw for literally one minute. Then talked about his trip to Las Vegas for ten minutes. During this talk his assistant took my dog to draw blood. The "consult" was now over. I was charged $245.00! I have yet to hear from this this so called veterinarian. It is now November 29, 2017. Four years ago my dog blew up a rear leg playing in the backyard with my other dog. 5 trips to ventura and a lot of rehab that lasted months she was all healed and happy. The vet said this would probably happen again and I said not on my watch. Well it did and living in arroyo grande thought to talk to Dr Sikes and Co. Unlike some other reviews I found him to have a lot of personality and showed care and expertise with my dog from start to finish. So much of this success rate is dependant on the owners. The care and rehab lasts months. And you cannot have an accident in between. The crew in his office was very efficient for working with a scared large dog. They all were knowledgeable when asked various questions. Dr Sikes from my view is clearly an perfectionist which was happy to see. Probably only more stress for the co-workers when someone cares so much about a surgery. I have no complaints and did not find him to be quick tempered in my visits just a bit colorful. But at all times professional when explaining and his crew "You have to follow the instructions to the letter." And you do and it is hard. Cali was so large that with the clown collar in the largest crate she could not lay or move comfortably at all like grinding a cup in prison against the bars. So had to connect two giant crates and that was the saving grace. Then had to pick her up later every night and carry into the bed where she slept all night. In the morning carry out of the bed. No accidents can happen. Thank Dr Sikes and crew for fixing her other leg and now have to be ever so careful as to not have any more accidents with her legs. read more

Dr Sikes, is a miracle worker! My fur baby Koda had broken and dislocated his hock, along with snapping tendons/ligaments on top and sides. Dr Sikes, put him under and was able to manipulate the bones back into place. 3 other veterinarians, that won't be named said surgery was the only way! Dr. Skies is a character but a darn good surgeon. We brought our kitty in here after she bit thru her tongue and severed part of it. My poor girl couldn't drink or clean properly. We took her to two other vets who offered to stitch it up but warned of the sides affects and risks of stitching a tongue (getting caught on teeth, claw, etc.) They also said they'd never done such an operation and for it to get fixed properly to have a surgeon do it. Well that's how I found Dr Sikes and he told me "I've operated on more tongues than you can shake a stick at". Well he proved that. He fixed her tongue from the inside out and imbedded the stitches so my kitty didn't know the difference. Mid November our 9 yr old dog King Casey was a victim of a hit and run. After taking him to the Care clinic (ER in Santa Barbara ) Dr.Sikes was a referred to us by our local Santa Ynez vet. We decided to have Dr. Sikes perform the 2 surgeries necessary to enable King Casey to walk again. The first being a hip surgery in his left hind and the following surgery to implant a metal plate in his right hind foot. Everything was going smoothly with his recovery until about 3 weeks ago from today when Casey went in for a routine splint change. Dr. Sikes decided to bend his splinted leg. While in the waiting room we heard King Casey cry out twice. Upon leaving the vet and the next couple of days Casey seemed very sore and limping in what appeared to be his left hip. We called the dr and he had us bring him back. Upon looking at him he said he looked fine and recommended we take X-rays at some point in the near future and we left. At home over the next week Casey was getting more and more sore. I phoned a good friend of mine, who happens to be a large animal vet and within 2 miles from my house, to see if we could take some X-rays of Casey. I had X-rays taken and returned to Dr. Sikes three days later. Upon seeing Casey, Dr.Sikes immediately requested we take some X-rays. I informed him that I had copies with me of X-rays that were just taken. He not so much as glanced at the top X-ray and said there could be something going on that you can't see in an X-ray. I asked him if he stood behind his work and he instantly fired back at me "THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES!" And that I should get a lawyer! I couldn't believe after paying this doctor over $6000.00 cash that he would react in such an unprofessional manner. I would warn people that once Dr. Sikes has your money he may not be interested in the quality of his work or the healthy recovery of your beloved pet. read more

I called Dr. Sikes office in Arroyo Grande because he was referred to me by my vet. I found Dr. Sikes to be Rude and Arrogant, short-tempered and exhaustive to be around. Our aging sweet and loving border collie was hit by a car and was in terrible pain. He said he could help her and that we should bring her in the next day he had an appointment available at 1 pm. I told him we need to pick up a trailer in Lompoc that day, was it possible to drop her off in the morning so she would not have to endure the long drive. He said they would be glad to take care of her and that we did not need to be there. When we go there the staff told me we could not leave her alone. I needed to be there. This was at 9 am in the morning. My dog was paralyzed and in terrible pain. I sat there with her for 4 hours. She had to go to the bathroom. They had no place for her to go. I had to clean her up myself and use the trash can outside. They did not have a restroom for owners with their animals. They took her inside the office after 2 hours. I could hear her crying as he manipulated her for xrays. It was cruel and excrutiating for me not to be there to comfort her. He would not allow me to go back with her. When her time finally came up. He looked at me and said, "I am 60 years old and by myself here. I cannot help you. I am not a neurologist. What were you thinking when you brought her here? She needs to go to Davis and have an MRI. I do not know if they can even help her. It will cost $2000 for the x-ray and probably $5000 for the surgery." Dr. Sikes charged me $380 for all the pain and torture he put us through.
