What a lovely experience! I had seen this advertised on Facebook and finally got to experience it. The building is pink, tiny, and unassuming. The menu has a wide variety and prices are reasonable. The service and warmth of the folks working is exceptional. I met Anita, who explained that her food is old fashioned because she makes it from scratch. Ordered huevos rancheros and a cheese papusa. I grew up in the area and have seen this building many time but never stop in. A little hole in the wall, I think they are known for their tamales. The cashier said they have been in business for 8 years. Today I decided to stop in while out shopping for a used car next door. I ordered their Carnitas Tacos & Tamales platter to go. This place is a hidden gem! Family run place, Anita the owner and head chef is a sweet heart. She came out of the kitchen and made sure the food was great! (the food was great!!) I had the Papusas, tacos and tamales lunch combo. They were excellent, great flavor and tons of meat. Papusas were authentic and the Curtido was spot on. Very good value for the price. This is ok not amazing. Tamale outshined all other foods. Salsa didn't have a ton of other spices besides tomato. Chips are friend flour tortillas and slightly over cooked. Pupusa was doughy, tasted more like potato than meat and had a ton Of cheese. There was very little meat in the pupusa at all. Curtido had a good flavor but had a lot of oregano. read more

Best soft tacos that I've had in KC! Anna is the owner and cook, but her nickname was Anita, thus Anita's Cuisine! After tasting the delicious food, and enjoying the friendly and welcoming service, I let the woman running the register and serving me know that they were the best tacos that I've had in KC, and definitely the most full of quality food. We talked about how most places only fill tortillas half full, and with sub-par ingredients. She went back in to kitchen and told Anna, and even though it was closing time for them, she came out and talked with me for 10 minutes! She's very passionate about quality food, and truly puts her heart into every plate. This is a must try for anyone who loves tacos, tamales, taquitos, flautas, papusas, and more! The building and interior decor are a bit dated but the friendly and attentive service behind the counter and in the kitchen overcome any apprehension of entering. I came specifically for the Pupusas and they did not disappoint. The two Cheese and Loroco offerings with a splash of curtido on top was filling and very inexpensive lunch. Little hole in the wall spot located in a quiet area. Not far from IKEA, this place has some decent food. We enjoyed their pupusas and I did like their Al Pastor taco. The variety is okay. Parking lot is super small. The lady who made the food was pleasant. Overall, it was a good experience but I'd probably try different Salvadorean spots closer to Kansas City. The fact that this spot didn't have quest con loroco, which is a staple in El Salvador, I give it the rating of 3 stars. Nothing bad, but nothing amazing. read more

The food is freshly prepared and the farthest thing from typical food chains. The menu is fairly simple. Latino describes it best. Authentic, so if you are looking for the Americanized versions of Mexican food, this ain't it. The Salvadorean tamales are some of the best we have had and we have had them in many places and countries. People are there buying them by the dozens, literally. It is a true hole-in-the wall place in an old house or storefront. The family that runs it have hearts of gold, or maybe their hearts are marinated in achiote?! Delicious always. Be patient it is prepared to order and they can get slammed when the take out orders are flowing! Did I mention their salsa has won awards? so fresh and again so authentic--not made in New York City as the old commercial used to say. They have great holiday food bundles too. I would definitely try this place out. I loved their tamales and pupusas. The service was amazing, the gentleman at the counter made you feel at home and was very friendly. The cook even turned to give us a smile. The seating area could use some help, but it is a small business with great food. I think it's great you can do to go orders and eat breakfast all day. This place is wonderful! Family owned and operated and super friendly service you can't get at most chains or even some other mom and pop shops. We ate here a few weeks ago and I got lazy and didn't post immediately (sorry ). But let's get into it this place is nice and quaint and has both dine in and carry out options but I recommend sitting in as it is very cozy in there a few booths decorate the place and while they may not be the most comfy you can ignore that due to just the new experience you will be enjoying. The other Salvadoran restaurant (2 blocks away) was full, but Anita's had some some empty booths. They serve breakfast all day, so my wife got the huevos rancheros. The potatoes were delicious and flavorful, with chopped peppers and grilled onions. The bacon was perfectly crispy without being burnt (I wish I could make it that well). This is my third time here. First couple times I can for lunch and got the pan relleno, which is great. This time I came at 9am on a Saturday. The farmer's market across the street was in full swing, and Anita's had steady business the 30 minutes or so that I was there. The young lady running the window was super friendly with everyone, and got me a bowl of salsa and chips for customers to munch on while they waited. I opted for the hot salsa, which is peppery with a pleasantly smoky burn. If I had to guess, it's probably a guajillo and chile de arbol based sauce. I got a sausage torta and a ham burrito. The torta was pretty good sized for $4 and very filling. No exotic flavors here, just a solid breakfast sandwich. I put a little of the gently herbal and fresh mild salsa on top and it perked it up a bit. One of the things I appreciate about Anita's is the fact that their food is consistently less greasy than a lot of their peers in the area. I feel like the torta and the burrito really didn't give me a chance to see what Anita's breakfast game is all about. Next time I'll order the chilaquiles or something more exotic than a breakfast burrito. Still, on the strength of this visit and previous ones, I can say that this place is one of my local favorites. read more

Great first visit here. Quiet, small, family-run restaurant with just a few tables. The food here was great - had revueltas pupusas along with some seriously vibrant tacos al pastor. Definitely worth stopping through if you are into authentic and delicious food with friendly service, or if you just survived a three-hour trip to IKEA and you're wondering if there is any good left in the world or if it's all just a sea of crushing existential inadequacy because of all your unfinished projects and inability to navigate adult relationships and just commit to what new dining room light fixture you're both going to put in when really you think it's fine just the way it is. I always always get tamales because they are the BEST! I love this place because the kitchen reminds me of my grandmother. It's very Homey.They are always so nice and greet you with kindness. We stopped here for lunch based on the Yelp reviews (thanks fellow Yelpers!) You review the menu and then place your order at a window. The person at the window was friendly and helpful when I was trying to decide what to order. My husband ordered the enchilada plate and I got a taco, pupusa, and an enchilada. After we ordered we were brought a basket of chips and salsa at no extra charge. The enchiladas were incredible, the sauce seemed mild at first but left a bit of heat on your tongue. I had never tried a pupusa before but I'm now in love, cheese and beans between a cornmeal tortilla was gooey and delicious - perfect for a person who dreams about melted cheese. The taco was my least favorite, but it was still good. I highly recommend trying out this small family run restaurant for good service and great food. read more

Came here on a Wednesday around 12:30. From the previous reviews, I was expecting a small, modest restaurant, and that's what I got! However, my experience here was even more positive than I expected. I ordered the 3 taco platter with 1 chicken, 1 asada, and 1 carnita taco to go. While I was waiting, I observed one waitress pleasantly working very hard to please 3 tables and deliver to-go orders. I also observed two ladies non-stop working the kitchen to deliver meals in a timely matter. The place felt busy, but not chaotic at all. All three ladies were calm, composed, and pleasant. I received my meal in about 10 minutes and headed home. The tacos were all flavorful and delicious, and I enjoyed the chicken the most. The meal came with refried beans, rice, and some salsa. The refried beans and rice were both cooked perfectly and a good addition to the meal. A wonderful addition to Merriam! I thought I could tackle it all (almost did) but holy cow. 5 different types of meat in it, cheese, rice beans. I felt like I was on an episode of man vs. food. The best part is I had to try to spend $20 there. Like try really hard.
