The decor and music is perfect! esp considering that the location was formerly a sub-par "pizza ranch" and the location is next to an excellent, equally busy steak house. Both are great choices and there is plenty of parking. Years past we drove & spent a lot of time visiting in the Michoacan, Vera Cruz, and central Mexico and the food, decor and music revives fond memories. read more

Quick service and my family's favorite Mexican restaurant. They offer my favorite salsa of local restaurants, fresh and homemade. Service was 10/10 and I was as lost in cheese. El Potro Mexican Cafe is my favorite mexican food restaurant. We usually dine at the El Potro in Lawrence or in Paola. This was our first visit to the restaurant in Bonner Springs. Ordered the Carnitas Tamale and Fried Taco with refried beans and Mexican Rice. Our meal was delicious as we expected. The very best part of our visit to the Bonner Springs restaurant was the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff. Even though it was noon and the restaurant was very busy, our server made us feel very special. She even helped me practice my very poor Mexican words with a smile. Although this El Potro is a little off of our direct route home from Kansas City, we will return again. At $4.99, the 12oz house frozen margarita is pretty good! For dinner, I ordered the steak tacos with corn tortillas. The side of rice and beans was great, as were the tacos. My husband and in-laws enjoyed their entrees as well. The portions were very generous, and most of the entrees were priced around $15-$20. Cannot say enough good things about this place! We stopped in on a road trip from Colorado back to Ohio, and it was one of the better choices we made all trip. We were seated right away and by the time we got back to the table after a quick bathroom break, there was already a basket of fresh chips and salsa on the table. The chips were legitimately perfect - hot, crispy, salty and on the thinner side. And the SALSA. There was a small bowl in front of each of us...we all got our own salsa! Revolutionary. Double dippers rejoice! The salsa was homemade too - I could taste the fresh cilantro. They also gave us a free bowl of queso which apparently they do for everyone...amazing! The menu is pretty extensive and our server was so friendly and the perfect amount of attentive and helpful (shout out to Maria G - you rock, girl!). I ordered a veggie quesadilla and the other members of our party got a taco salad with grilled chicken, enchiladas, and deep fried ground beef tacos. My quesadilla was filled with charred broccoli, mushrooms, onions, and zucchini and came with guac on the side. The vegetable mixture was perfect and the guac was great too...yum! All of the portions were huge and everything was truly delicious and flavorful. We were just sad we were traveling and couldn't take our leftovers with us in the car. Pulled up and parking lot was packed, good sign already. We expected to wait with a party of 5, but we were seated within 5-10 minutes! Much bigger than I anticipated inside. Place was clean and comfortable. Surprised that queso(free) was delivered with salsa and chips as we waited for our server. The 3 different margaritas we tried were delicious! Big menu made the decision on what to eat a little difficult, but everyone loved their food. Even my 2 year old was happy! This is our new Friday night dinner spot! I cut into it and started eating it. I didn't pay too much attention because I was in conversation with an old friend. After about my third or fourth bite, I noticed something that looked like meat. They have locations in Paola, Lee's Summit, Lawrence, and Bonner Springs. The location in Bonner has a nice little outside patio where you can enjoy your margaritas in the fresh air! I have tried several of their dishes and all have been very tasty. They have a pretty extensive menu, and I haven't been able to try everything they offer yet. I would recommend the fajitas or the pork carnitas tamales. The barbacoa tacos weren't too bad either! If you like Burritos then the Burrito Del Mar is a bit of a different twist then you're probably used too, but it was still good! I might have as well just ate cinnamon for dinner. We couldn't even finish it after taking the first bite. There are always cars in this parking lot! People love El Porto! Taco Tuesdays and daily specials keep people coming back. Not my #1 fav in the area but their beers, margs, chips and dips, meats, rice, beans and Tex mex delights will leave you with a full tummy. Good selection of cervezas which is muy importante for my family. Ha! Service is speedy and they have good space for big groups of people. I ordered my dinner and asked for two items to not be included due to allergies. They brought out my dinner, I pointed out the allergen on the plate, they apologized and took it back to correct it. They came back a second time and it STILL included one of the two allergens. They wanted to try a third time but by that time everyone else at the table was finished eating and I did not trust them so I said no thanks. So if you have any anaphylaxis allergies, I highly recommend using caution when dining here because they do not seem to take it seriously at all. read more
