I went to La Cocina De Mary last week by myself and was absolutely blown away. It's a wonderful little restaurant tucked in between a wild bird store and a sandwich place. Walking in you'll find it's a very bright, cheerful atmosphere, very clean, with about ten tables (I think), and two tv's playing Spanish music. The people are nice and very efficient. Chef Joseph is phenomenal. He was manning the register when I went in. I'd never been to a Mexican & Salvadoran restaurant before. I'm familiar with Mexican American food, a little bit with truly authentic Mexican, and not at all with Salvadoran. Chef Joseph came out from behind the counter and sat at my table explaining the menu to me, the dishes, the flavor profiles. He gave suggestions on what order based on what I told him I liked. I got one of the combo dishes mainly because it offered a variety of proteins and side dishes. I also saw several more items in the menu that I knew I wanted to try on my next visit. The food was delicious! I surprised myself by finishing the whole plate. I was also delighted to find La Cocina De Mary had atole. It's a traditional cold weather drink made with masa harina, milk, and spices. My tia made it when I was a kid, so there's fond memories. This one was better ... and lucky for me tia isn't on Yelp and will never read this. They have soft drinks and a few alcohol drinks that I may try next time. The one that's a bloody mary except with beer instead of vodka sounded interesting. Next time I go, I'm taking FPO with me. I enjoyed the first-rate Salvadoran food, the excellent service and the pleasant atmosphere at this new family-run restaurant. The pechuga a la plancha (grilled chicken) plate ($14.99) included salad, rice and two tortillas. It was served 17 minutes after I ordered at the table, where the service from the owner was helpful, polite and professional. Everything was delicious, with a generous portion of moist, nicely seasoned, perfectly cooked white chicken, a fresh salad with a light, tasty dressing, moist, flavorful rice and two fresh, hot tortillas. I found the dining area to be clean and freshly remodeled with TVs playing a Mexican music video station. The menu included breakfast and kids' meals. Beer and margaritas are coming soon, following receipt of a liquor license. A dual language menu and lunch specials would be nice additions, but otherwise, excellent!. read more

We decided to try out this restaurant for the first time and were so happy we did! Fresh & Flavorful are two words that come to mind when we tried our dinners. The server (maybe owner, not sure) came over and pulled up a chair to explain the menu in full. We were thankful since I have celiac and it helped us to know more about what to choose then and when we go back. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and would order the same dishes again. My husband had a chicken dish and I had the steak tacos with corn tortillas and fresh guacamole. The atmosphere is casual and friendly with good service. It is also very clean. read more

Mmm... I rarely write a review after the first visit but I am just so excited that La Cocina De Mary is now in town. First thing first, the food was amazing. Every dish had its own distinct flavor profile and every component complemented each other for an amazing dish. Plus, everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. Their menu has a few dishes we rarely see in the KC food scene. We were excited to have a Cemita and Arabe Tacos. Cemitas are a type of sandwich with crispy meat, stringy Oaxaca cheese, and deliciousness. The Arabe taco was a tortilla wrapped in juicy meat topped with adobo sauce that we will be back again for. Joseph ensured that we had a great dining experience. It was clear that he was passionate about serving high quality food and helping the customers find a dish they love. Went here with my parents last night. Food was great, and the chef was EXTREMELY friendly. He came out and explained the menu and at another point brought us fresh drinks for us to try (rice water and hibiscus). He's extremely excited and passionate about the place. Food was great. I would take off half a star because the music was distractingly loud and when I asked him to turn it down, he either forgot or barely adjusted the volume, and there were times that the wait got kind of long once more tables arrived, because he was so friendly that he was giving every table the undivided attention. It's such wonderful service but when you aren't getting the attention, the wait can get long. I definitely recommend and really this should be 4.5 stars due to the volume and some wait but I don't want to take away from their stellar ratings because they were extremely friendly with great food. He did give us free dessert since it was our first time. read more
