Stopped in to make an appointment to get my garden tiller tuned up. Martin said to bring it in, and he should have it ready in 3 days. He had it ready the next afternoon. Martin is a great person to talk with and an excellent mechanic. I have already taken my lawn mower in for a tune-up and when the spring rush slows down, I've got a generator that could use a good thorough tune-up. I stopped in at Ankeny Hardware this morning to buy a clamp for a hose and some deck screws. I found the clamp very easily with the plumbing supplies. However finding a box of screws is impossible in their store. Not only do you have to go through the sliding drawers to find what you need you also have to remember the price of the individual pieces. I am not going to carry 2-3 pounds of deck screws up to the register just to tell you how much they are. Having the option to buy a prepackaged box of screws especially decking screws would help a lot Otherwise the store is clean the employees are friendly and helpful. The staff here have always super helpful and ready to assist with finding what I need! My last two stops here involved me looking for... 1. A few nails for nail gun. They sell them by the single strip which is super convenient as I only needed about 20 nails. 2. Rescreening of my back screen door. I'd give this store a five star if anyone there other than the mechanic that ends his day at 3:30 PM had even a basic knowledge of lawnmowers/small-motors. Don't get me wrong I like the store, the owner is very friendly, and I think he runs a very good business, but don't go there after 3:30 with any questions whatsoever on even the most basics of lawnmower/small-motor mechanics. I asked probably the easiest soft ball question on a recent trip there out of curiosity about how to wind a lawnmower pull start cord and nobody there after 3:30 had a clue. When you live and work around small-motors and lawnmower equipment, especially if you own the store, you should have some very basic knowledge of the tools and equipment you sell. Overall I really like this store and almost always prefer it over the big-box stores in town so I hope you don't read the review as negative, because that is far from the intent of giving the reader a heads up that you will NOT get any advice or technical know-how unless you can speak with the mechanic there who closes up shop at 3:30 PM. read more

Nice store. Good location. Lots of parking. Parking lot is easy to get in and out of. They are currently doing some renovations to the inside of the store, so it was a little cluttered in areas, but they are definitely working to contain the mess that comes along with the renovations. The staff were all very friendly, jovial, and helpful. They are quick to offer assistance & will try to answer your questions (even if that means they have to do some research to find an answer for the question).
