I thought it was just like a big hardware store.. little did I know it was so much more! It had everything! Seriously! It was like a Lowes meets, Grocery Store, Meets costume shop, meets holiday store, meets Target or something.. It was crazy, I was so surprised about the great grocery section, also stoked about the seasonal sections both celebrating Halloween and Christmas in Mid Oct. Do not buy cabinets from Menards. The lack of a design expert has cost me time, stress, money, and compromise on my final design. The Menards employee that helped me layout my base cabinets doesn't know that a 30" sink needs a bigger base than 30". Countertops are already cut for 30" sink but she designed it with a 30" base which will not work without cutting the base side walls leaving it structurally weak. If they aren't going to train their workers then they need to not sell cabinets. They also don't know that the 155 degree hinges can't have a wall, fridge, or stove next to them cause they won't open wide enough for the drawers to pull out. Now I'm having to redesign them but they've discontinued the color I chose between when I ordered and installed so my options are limited. Very disappointed in the whole process. I'll never be buying cabinets from Menards again. read more

Menards is a home improvement store chain that is centered in the Midwest. They compete with both the Home Depot and Lowe's and in many ways do it better. Their stores are huge, their selection is vast, and I have usually found store staff to be friendly and helpful. And I'm usually in town when they have their 15% off paper bag sale. A few weeks ago, I stopped by on my way to Des Moines and just wandered around for a half hour or so. I have been at this Menards a few times before and sort of knew my way around. Normally you can have a decent experience here. This last experience is not so hot. This is a rating for the building materials area. April 21st we put an order for a garage. A completed estimate was done online on their website. The entire project was taken in, quoted and was told we would get a call when it was close to deliver. 14 days later no call and we are wondering what is going on. Come to find out..a custom item that takes 12 days to build wasn't put on the needed specs. So now we are ready to build and can't without this custom item that of course must be custom delivered for a fee of course. So the person who messed it up this whole process can't even help press it along, give a discount for the mess up, or do a dang thing about it. No apologies from the one who miss communicated, lied, or whatever you want to call it. The gentleman Charlie in that department was awesome and we've worked with him before. He knows what he's doing and the one you want to work with. I'm just super unhappy with that no one caught it. We never got a call or nothing and the entire build is messed up because of this. read more

Yes, prices beat Home Depot and Lowe's and Ace Hardware. But that's because they don't provide customer service here. I am a disabled veteran. I stood outside in the garden department for 20 min while someone tried to find someone to help me with ordering a stone fire pit. Eventually she came back and said I had to go to him. He was on the other end out the store. He put together a quote, and I told him I wanted to buy it. He told me I had to go pick the items myself. I asked if I could get some help, at least to show me where they were at. Although I was the only customer in his area and he had 2 other employees there, he didn't want to come with me. Told me vaguely where to go. I wasn't going to spend my money somewhere I didn't feel appreciated. If I ordered it online they would have picked everything! I called to talk to a manager. Was told he would call me back. He did not, 2 days later I called, talked to a manager, told him I was still looking for a pit, and he didn't even try to convince me to buy from there. So for easy things, go here, for big projects, I'd pay more for help. read more

Great for getting home improvement supplies. We stopped in to get some shelves for our garage and were able to find things easily with their clearly marked isles. Staff was nice and very helpful. The store was well kept and clean. Very organized and well laid out. Supplies were a bit pricy but we wanted quality products. When I go to Menards in Ankeny, I don't us the cashier Bridget Ballard. She would cut our family's hair in her home for 7 years. We were there during bad weather and I asked her husband Nick, if he knew anyone who could build be a garage. He said this is your man and pointed to the guy next to him. Curtiss and Kelsey Bird of CB Contracting. Several months latter I called him, gave him a check for $17,500 for new garage and replace driveway. All he did was cash the check, I asked Bridget for help and she replied she didn't know those people. They were in her house, she has a picture of her and Kelsey hanging together on Facebook. She knows my son has cerebral palsy and she did it any way. I only paid Curtiss Bird is because I thought we were friends, very expensive lesson. read more

I ordered some spindles for my deck that needed replaced and waited a few weeks for them to arrive at the store. After I stopped in to check on them a few times, I was informed that the spindles I had purchased were discontinued. I was quite upset about this since these were the only spindles that matched the current ones on my deck that needed replaced. Tim, the store manager, made a few phone calls and found some remaining spindles at a store in a neighboring state and had them shipped to my house!!! Since the "new" remodel of Menards stores.It has become apparent they are only intrested in homeowners.You have to walk all the way thru the store to contractors desk.Sheetrock is now kept outside so it draws moisture and stays damp.Bad ideas.Go to Homedepot next door. read more

Customer Service is awful!!!!! Asked young man a question or tried to and he just pointed to another person and walked away. That second person was very helpful BUT slow slow. Check out gal very pleasant but the kid at the guard house was clueless (that's being nice). So we had to drive around looking for what we purchased finally a forklift driver helped. Returned to guard shack to check out and a different young man was more interested in his phone than helping us. Overall not a fun time, will shop elsewhere next time. read more
