This is my favorite hardware store-- it's near my house, the proprietor Steve is always there with a team of other people who all have knowledge, expertise and creative solutions for my house-building conundrums or projects. I recently screened in my porch to build basically a huge catio and they call me the cat patio girl! Fun to be known, and have real people to ask questions to. This is the only genuine hardware and lumber business in the area. After purchasing my new home in 2012 that happened to come with over forty feral cats, I discovered this fantastic family owned business. The wood shop has saved me so many times by cutting plywood to size so that it was ready to stain, paint and use. This has included precutting several pieces of plywood from scale drawings to build combination work tables and heated habitats for the cats we love throughout the TNRM process. Went in to 52nd today for some 4x4 brackets and glue.. Just to purchase them. Didn't ask for help. This place is totally lacking in customer service. And they guy at the register was incredibly nonchalant in his lack of service to the point of rudeness. Didn't get the guys name, but it doesn't matter. If the culture is to accept employees being so rude to your customers as to say bye bye as they then leave out the door. Well that's your business. As for me, I'll go up the street anywhere other than to you. And tell everyone I have the chance too not to bother with you. read more

My GC recommended this hardware store. I worked with Dean to order a sliding patio door and 2 windows. He was so friendly and patient at explaining things for my quote! When I decided to move forward with the quote, we kept missing each other's phone calls but he always tried to call back. The worst customer service ever , there guy Craig said he could do a lumber package and that him and his boss would get back to me in a few days , never happened . when i fianally got him to answer phone when his boss said he didn't want to deal with me because i was comin g from seattle . I sent his owner Steve a email before i posted this because i am a small business owner to and i would like to have the chance to fix a bad comment before posted and he never responded and didn't care what i had to say . When I moved to Portland 22 years ago, instead of heading to a "big box" store when working on my circa 1940 house, I decided to check out their store. For more than two decades, I've been delighted by their attentive personal service. It matters not if I'm buying a load of lumber -- or just a couple of screws -- they help me get exactly the "right" thing for the job. And, because I'm a bit short of woodshop tools, it's great that they'll cut the plywood or lumber to my precise dimentions. I'll continue to recommend this family-owned business to all I know. By the way, their prices are very competitive. Why bother going to a store where the workers don't have a clue and couldn't care less? Yes! Our local savior from the big box stores. Not sure why it took me so long to find this place, but now that we have, we're super excited. Living in Woodstock, its always a hassle to go to that big Orange store on 205 or 82nd. Now that we know we have a solid, well priced supply of lumber and related tools, we wont be making that trip anymore. The folks running the place were super nice and helpful. We just needed wood for a shelf, but were able to find very reasonably priced tools for a drywall job we're doing. Will definitely be returning (especially since they're open after noon on Saturdays!). read more

I called two hours after they closed without realizing it. The guy who was working still answered the phone. I asked how late they were open and he told me 5. I apologized for bugging him (I have spent the last 12 years working retail and truly dislike people who feel that it's appropriate to make employees stay late just for them) and said goodbye. He stopped me and asked what I was looking for. I explained that one of our fence posts had been broken and that i was trying to repair it tonight so that the dogs could still go out. "That's fine, I have some. How soon can you be here?" I was shocked. They have always been really helpful whenever I've gone in but it was truly above and beyond this time around. I wish I would have grabbed the guys name. Anyways, its interactions like this that make me shop here whenever I need ANYTHING they carry. Great staff, great product, great prices. I am mostly a DIY person with small-job needs, but they always give me full attention even when I'm just spending $20. We built our entire house using wood from 52nd Avenue hardware. Their prices were competitive with the bigger lumberyards but their personal service was incomparable. We're happy we made the decision to use them to build our house and continue to go to them for all of our smaller needs, from fences, decks, and the occasional piece of lumber. I have driven past this little jewel on the way to Home Depot Hell for years. I am doing a project that has taken on a life of it's own and have made numerous trips to get just one more hurricane tie... one more piece of 2x2... you know how it goes.
