First of all, Ann Sathers is a wonderful restaurant. The service and servers are all impeccable, friendly, and kind. The food, divine! HOWEVER, the back room in the restaurant on Granville and Broadway needs a huge think-over. I was with a friend on Sunday, and we were seated in the back room. There were two fairly large groups of family members enjoying breakfast and a group of six people across from us. The group of six was so loud that I could not hear my friend from across the table. Are you kidding me? First, why do people have to scream at the top of their lungs in restaurants? It gets so loud in some of these places, and on Sunday, Ann Sathers was no different. If you do not have some sort of acoustical material to buffer the sound, then maybe a hostess or whoever is the manager of the restaurant should politely tell loud people that others are trying to have a conversation as well and lower their damn volume...sheesh! The service here is extremely great! The meal I ordered was not very flavorful in my opinion. The fruit was sweet & tasty, the hashbrowns were more like potato skins. The synonym...I mean the cinnamon rolls though! These things are legit! A standard side comes with two of them, and they are large enough to last me several days! (Lately my appetite has been reduced from the usual voraciousness for reasons we won't discuss). The dough is fresh, and the cinnamon is noticeable but won't have you coughing. Then there is the frosting... it is abundant, flavorful, and has just a teeny bit of crispness up top, kind of like a really great Krispy Kreme donut! Alas, based on my experience, the cinnamon rolls are the only things worth visiting for, and even those can be ordered to-go. I ordered the 2 eggs (over medium), with bacon, and for my sides, I ordered the hash browns + cheese, and the cinnamon rolls. The eggs? They were a true over-medium, but lacked any salt or seasoning. To be fair, it was provided on the table, but shouldn't food leave a kitchen ready to eat? Adding more salt/pepper should be an option, not a necessity. Extra-lean bacon was fine, only I grumble that regular bacon wasn't available. Bacon should be bacon-y! The hash browns, though, were an outrage. First, these had no crispness of any kind. It seemed as though they were boiled, thrown onto a griddle for three seconds (if that), topped with pre-shredded cheese from a bag, and put onto the plate. Second, they were hilariously bland - look, with the eggs I was a little more forgiving, though with the potatoes I draw the line! Third is value: the thing that makes $13.45 acceptable for two eggs and a few bacon strips is the fact that two sides are included...Cinnamon rolls? Great! you get two large pastries! But with the potatoes, you get about a serving spoon; these two are not equivalent. Three-and-a-half: what's the bagged shredded cheese about? Y'all know the anti-caking agents mean it doesn't melt right, right? Finally, where I want to give them kudos is the speed of the service. The sweets came out before I finished washing my hands, and the eggs/bacon/potatoes followed very soon after. Ann Sather may be an institution, but as a newcomer to Chicago, it failed to win over my heart as a sit-down place, only as a takeaway, and only for one item. I do not feel it is worth paying close to $20 for food I can make three times better at home for a fraction of the cost. read more

What a great way to start your day! Rather small and loud (not boujee by any means), but worth it with so many great breakfast favorites to choose from. Large portions and really amazing prices!! This is a solid breakfast place. It's a bit expensive but I enjoy it. Especially the cinnamon rolls. Some of the best in Chicago.

Probably most know for their cinnamon roll (do try one), this is a great breakfast spot in the neighborhood. They have a few other locations closer to downtown and having gone to others the quality is pretty consistent. Since this is close to Loyola it can get pretty packed for brunch during the school year. I haven't had a bad option yet, so definitely try whatever looks good to you. I don't think I've been to this Ann Sather before, but since the Andersonville location closed, this is the one that's now closest to me. I recently had a craving for a cinnamon roll, and Ann Sather's are legendary in Chicago. Their website is... useless? It's not useful for online ordering (you couldn't order online at all, you have to call, in the year of our lord 2022), so I called to order a couple cinnamon rolls to pick up. They said they have them available anytime so to just come in, so I popped in one morning to get a couple. When I got home I was so disappointed! I am not one who actually needs them the way they serve them in store--where they are drenched, on a plate filled with icing--but upon first glance I wasn't even sure if these had any icing. Another reviewer said they looked like they were leftover from the day before, and yep, I can totally see that. I don't think they were, but wow these were underwhelming. Given how they are presented when you dine in, I expected a bit more icing than this--again, not a gallon, but some. I'm also surprised that since they know their customers are used to that, they don't even suggest buying a bit of icing on the side to accompany them. Well, once I got home and saw them there was nothing to do but eat them. So we heated them for about 15 seconds in the oven to warm them up. Didn't melt the frosting at all, but they were more edible that way than as the hard lump of bread that was in the bag. I've enjoyed the cinnamon rolls at AS but have never really understood the hype... this time they tasted no better than something you'd make out of a Pillsbury can, so in the future I'll look for a better place if I have my heart set in a delicious cinnamon roll. read more

I was very surprised to see such mixed reviews for this Ann Sather location. It's a really great neighborhood basic for us to have, and I've always get really satisfied every time I've visited. Most recently I will say we went on a very early Sunday morning, and were one of maybe three tables in the restaurant at the time so I'm sure that affects food quality and service. Our waiter was very kind and attentive. Our food came out fresh and hot and we had no complaints at all! What I love most about Ann Sather is that you basically pay for breakfast and an equal portion of leftovers. Our total bill came out to around 30 dollars, including juice and coffee and for the amount of food we had that was an amazing deal! read more

5 stars for the cinnamon rolls. Oh. My. God. I could eat these daily and not get sick of it. However, if I had to go by service, this place would be 2*. The service was chaotic. This location is so busy, especially for weekend brunch, however, I think that the staff needs some more organization with the way that they seat customers and provide service. I had brunch here on a Sunday. We were seated by a hostess. Then 4 other tables were seated. No waitress came to check my table. However, the other tables around me started getting service, including drinks and cinnabons being served and we still had nothing! Not even an acknowledgement. It was just a bummer experience. I went with my mom who gets around with a walker and every single employee went out of their way to ensure she could get in and out of the door, and get every carb she was craving. The coffee was refilled promptly and we even got lemons for our water when we asked. The only issues we ran into was the bathroom wasn't easily accessible because there were no bars to hold on to, and they serve honey in tiny little packets which are probably more sanitary but difficult to open. read more

I love Ann Sather! Or more accurately, her cinnamon rolls! I've been going to her restaurants since I was a little boy. Best cinnamon rolls I've ever had. Ann sold her restaurants to Tom Tunney back in the 80's. He apprenticed under her for a year, and did a great job taking the torch and carrying it for many years. Sadly, he has begun selling-off the restaurants, as the land is extremely valuable. He sold the Andersonville location back in 2013, and recently sold the Belmont location to a developer for $10 million. But I digress. This was my first visit to this location on Granville, just steps from the Loyola campus. The food was just as good as I remember. I had the Crab Cake Benedict and it was delicious! My wife had the traditional Eggs Benedict, and my daughter enjoyed her waffle. But the star of the meal was the cinnamon rolls! Service was friendly and quick. Came here on a rainy Tuesday morning with 3 of my friends before my flight out of Chicago. We were seated immediately and had the nicest waitress! We ordered the mexican omelette with cheddar cheese, it came with 2 sides so we got the cinnamon roll and a bowl of fruit. We also ordered danish pancakes which came with sausage (usually meatballs, but they ran out). We ordered these dishes to share between the 4 of us and it was the perfect amount! Mexican omelette was really good, tons of avocado and cheese - the salsa was a great touch as well. Cinnamon rolls came in a huge portion and were so delicious. Danish pancakes were a bit too eggy for me and I didn't love the berry sauce that came with it. Overall, they were great portions for a great price! I usually frequent the Belmont location but decided to visit this closer location today. I was pleased to find they were open for breakfast today on the 4th of July. I invited my sister, who had never been to Ann Sather before, and raved to her about their fresh cinnamon rolls. The value for money is exceptional; breakfast includes two sides (which can be fresh baked (two) gooey cinnamon rolls, or two fresh baked biscuits, hash browns, or a couple other options are also available), making it a substantial meal for the price. You leave feeling satisfied and that you've received excellent value, unlike many other establishments affected by shrinkflation. There was a slight issue with my order not being hot enough, an occurrence that has never happened before. Although I usually refrain from complaining, the manager promptly had my meal remade, and it was served hot, delicious, and very comforting (nostalgic). The manager also graciously comped our drinks, which was greatly appreciated, even though we were already content with our meal/visit. He went the extra step and it proved the point (I had made to my sister) that its a great spot for breakfast. My sister is now a fan of Ann Sather and expressed her desire to bring her sons for breakfast soon. Ann Sather continues to be a favorite for my family, and we will undoubtedly return to this location. Thank you for a delightful visit and excellent food. Truly appreciated. Appears as if seating was a secret project and the hostess had failed to have been informed that the seating plan and its details were to be found in an abandoned phone booth accessible only through time travel and with the correct password. Eventually I was uncomfortably wedged between two parties, only to enjoy the open, available and spacious seating as a view from my cramped and uncomfortable confines. Then came a barrage of three, possibly four servers, albeit they all were pleasant, they were all equally dazed and confused. Which might account for my cinnamon rolls being nuked three, possibly four times. And then it arrived, rediscovered cinnamon rolls long thought lost from a Manhattan Project Breakfast; drowning in a bubbling radioactive sea of dollar store expired canned frosting. As anticipated, the visual disappointment was only a prelude to the much more disappointing taste test. Of course getting the check was another arduous endeavor. The cinnamon rolls :( I ordered the mexican omelet with a side of hash browns and cinnamon rolls. The omelet and the salsa that came with it had absolutely zero flavor. If you had flavor in your mouth and you took a bite of the omelet and salsa, it would neutralize it. That's how bland it was! I thought, oh well, a swedish themed cafe is probably not known for authentic mexican flavor or spice, but low and behold I still had the side of cinnamon rolls in the bag that came with the order. I have had these many times before and they are ooey gooey delicious. I open the bag and pulled them out and they look like they were sitting under a heat lamp for forever. Perhaps they were left over from yesterday? There was almost no icing, and the sides and top were hard. Definitely seemed like a leftover. The only thing that was good was the hash browns. Very tasty. I haven't eaten here since the beginning of the pandemic, so maybe they have had a change of staff and they are figuring things out. I'll try again in a few months. read more
