This is ridiculous how I see animals in the shelter with no cover over the heads left in the rain when we showed up- I bought a cat that I was told was 4 years old and spayed yet 1 week in she came down with URI and vet stated I was given the wrong meds and he was surprised- ontop of this needing a shot that will now cost over $100 and mind you shes only been at our house 2 weeks- howling and acting like shes in heat- we get no sleep as this cat does not act or look 4 years old and all symptoms of in heat yet going to vet again today over the issue ! AND ANNA SHELTER NEVER ANSWERS THAT DAMN PHONE!!!! Extremely POOR customer service and I will never go back there. read more

I got the sweetest cat I have ever had from the ANNA Shelter. I truly do not understand the bad reviews. The magnitude of what they deal with should humble you. Just the kindest organization, no doubt overwhelmed by what they see in terms of cruelty and neglect. They don't guarantee perfect health. How could they? I'm going to share with you a few pet adventures I've had over the last 6 or so years and if you make it to the end, I'll tell you what all of the tales have in common. -There was the time that my late cat Paddy had to have a few extractions and when I picked him up from the clinic I was told that one of his teeth shattered but, since there was no x-ray machine on the premises, they had to guess if they got all of the fragments out. Surprise: they didn't. Fortunately my aunt started a GoFundMe to raise the $1,000 needed to fix the damage that was caused (which of course was done by another veterinarian's office). - When I adopted my late cat Sadie, I was told that she was in perfect health for a senior cat, she just needed a dental cleaning. So I took her into the clinic and after a volunteer (not a tech, a volunteer) traumatized Sadie to the point that she wet herself, the vet comes in, looks at Sadie's mouth and tells me "Oh, she's way beyond a cleaning. She needs to have her teeth pulled." I learned my lesson from the experience with Paddy, but still wasn't prepared to have to take a cat to immediately have all of her teeth pulled when I was told during the adoption process that it wasn't necessary. -My father adopted a cat for me that was a VERY handsome boy. No health issues I had to worry about. Fast forward 24 hours and he's vomiting blood. By the morning when I woke up, my apartment looked like a crime scene. My dad called the place he got the cat from and at first he was asked to keep him until they found a foster, he refused and they miraculously remembered that the cat has a bleeding ulcer, something never mentioned to him or on paperwork. -Saving the saddest, and most recent, for last: I was given a senior kitty for my birthday. He was brought to my door the day before my birthday on Friday, June 27th. His name was Lenny, he was 12 and he was buff colored. He had a smokers meow and I loved him right away. Other than him being a senior, no health issues were reported. There wasn't an FIV test done on him, which I found to be strange. Well, it didn't take long for me to notice the giant elephant in the room: Lenny was skin and bones and I couldn't get him to eat. He had a very hard swallow as well. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gotten him into a vet much sooner, but I thought that maybe it was just a matter of finding the right wet food. But none of it was right. I got him into the vet as soon as I could and they confirmed my worst fears. His belly was full of fluid making it hard for him to breathe, let alone eat. His hip bones and spine jutted out because of this. His body had been slowly shutting down the whole time he was with me. THERE WAS NO WAY THE PLACE I GOT HIM FROM DIDN'T KNOW THE SHAPE HE WAS IN. So, with a broken heart, because not long ago I just lost my Sadie girl and here I am doing this again for a poor boy that was so sick yet overlooked, I gave him a kiss and held him when he slipped away. So what do these stories have in common? Every single one of these were courtesy of The Anna Shelter and/or their clinic next door. I'm not telling anyone what to do or who to support when it comes to adopting animals. I'm only talking about MY experiences. I'm talking about MY broken heart. I'm someone that was raised to love animals, and I do. I love them enough to never, ever, entrust any animal with them again. Whether it be a stray in need or someone asking me where they should adopt from or donate, I will *never* have anything to do with that shelter again. In memory of Paddy, Sadie, Lenny and every other pet owned by anyone that was hurt, ignored while in pain, handled roughly by people that shouldn't even be handling pets in a medical setting, from all of us against declawing, here is a hearty GOOD BYE. read more

Staff was wonderful, helpful and very caring. Although we didn't find our match we still enjoyed all the puppies/dogs that came to the fence to greet us. It's sad that we need shelters for the furbabies but this one was clean and the animals were all healthy looking. read more

When my emotional support dog unexpectedly died, I went to the Anna shelter to adopt a new companion. There was an owner surrender named Bruno, he was four years old. He was at the shelter for around six weeks. Lots of people looked at him, but he would growl and cower in the corner. He did want to be touched. Bruno is a Pomeranian Chihuahua mix. Sometimes you need to be aware of the breed you are adopting, understand the animal has been traumatized, and show a lot of love and patience. I was told Bruno would not allow me to pick him up, was unsocialized, and hated to go for car rides. When I open my car door, I said Bruno want to go for a ride he jumped right in, Bruno loves to go for rides. He is housebroken, he smiles and many times people think he is showing teeth but that's not the case. His previous owners said they did not have enough time for him. It showed! I'm sure Bruno was kept in a crate all day long. He loves to roam the house, sleeps in the bed with me, is extremely protective of me. He has turned into a cuddle Buddy. He listens really well, loves baths And gets along extremely well with other dogs. After a little time, effort and training, Bruno is now my emotional support dog and goes everywhere with me. I am very grateful the Anna Shelter took Bruno in. Many kill shelters kill owner surrender dogs first. Each day I had Bruno, a little more of his personality came out. He has turned out to be an amazing companion and I feel very blessed to have him in my life. Thank you for giving Bruno a second chance. He has found his forever home. read more

I love the Anna shelter. We adopted Remi when he was 10 weeks old. He's the best lil guy ever. I had to get my chihuahua one more shot, and I was grateful to the Anna shelter for that being a requirement. That way neither one got sick, and we've had 3 1/2 wonderful years with Remi and Bella. Our dog just died, she was getting old and she got sick. We hope to get interviewd for another chihuahua from the shelter. Remi is a very healthy and happy lil guy. My mom wants a cat. I was hoping to come here and see positive reviews since several years ago when I adopted a dog from here. After signing a contract that stated the dog "was in good health", I took the dog home. He would drag his behind around on the carpeted floors all of the time. I took him to my usual veterinarian and she took a stool sample from him. He had giardia! I found out that these parasites can live outside the body for a long time and get passed around from other hosts... like animals in a shelter. I had to pay for two exams, lab fees, and the medication, on top of the $129 adoption fee... for the dog "in good health". The dog had issues and needed to be trained... bad. I paid for training and the dog just wouldn't train. I've had several dogs in the past with no learning issues. I felt so bad for the dog. He ate his plastic tray in his crate. I'd take him out on long walks and he'd never poop... until he got back into the house! The day that he squatted and pooped right in front of me in the house (alpha issues), was the day that I called ANNA. I told them about everything. They were very cold and said that I could bring him back. It made me sad to have to take him back and when I did, the ANNA staff looked at me like I was some cold human, giving up on a dog. I showed them the bills from the vet and the trainer... they didn't care. I was out around $400 dollars for a dog that I had to give back. I hope you liked that donation. I won't be getting a cat from here. I'm glad that people posted those reviews. read more

This is the worst place for trying to adopt animals. Had appointment which they told me the animal would be held there for 24 hours, since out of state. So drove all the way there, only to be told I had an appointment, but not confirmed appointment, which it was. I was there way prior to the 24 hour deadline also. They not only wasted my entire day, but I also drove through a blizzard to get that animal. Very disappointed. read more

I walked into the building ready to buy a new kitten but instead i got terrible attitudes. It was 5:01 and they close at 5 and an employee gave me a terrible atittude and countinuesly bluttered "we're closed." When i asked where the kittens were. terrible service and terrible hours would not reccomend! read more

I have adopted 2 dogs from The ANNA shelter. Both were Pit Bull mixes. These 2 dogs have been the best dogs I've ever had. Yes, there were some health problems, and yes there were some behavioral problems. But when you make that commitment, you make it for better or for worse. One has since passed, I miss him everyday. I would not ever hesitate to adopt again from ANNA. read more

We came here for an event and got one of 4 Yorkie pups. The little dog was fixed already and in perfect health! Her name was Ruby. She is very affectionate and sweet. The staff was helpful and polite. We got her for about 250$ so a very good price. Definitely worth the purchase. Great service and great dogs. read more

I strongly wish to inform people against going to this shelter for many reasons including the attitude of the staff and their chaotic and irresponsible practices, too numerous to name here. Cats should be tested for Feline Leukemia and AIDS and people should be informed instead of Anna's irresponsible current practice of selling them to unassuming customers who bond with and love their pet only to find that it is a Walking Dead Animal. No-kill shelters all over the world set up programs to test and place with informed individuals who agree to house multiple cats with these viruses and work out some sort of a deal with the shelter when their time comes to euthanize them. It's the Humane and the Right thing to do for both the owners and the animals. This organization is neglectful to both the customer and the community in putting these cats into the population without being tested and without a responsible plan. The pain and suffering caused by this irresponsible act is enormous and unnecessary. People have the right to expect to adopt a pet who has a chance at living a long and normal life. This organization plays Russian roulette. They take your money for potentially unwell animals when they could be easily be identified with simple testing and you could be informed and make the decision whether you want a sick animal or not. There is no excuse for this kind of irresponsibility and most shelters would find it abhorrant. read more

When I got my kitten, every cat in the shelter was sick, I brought him back to their clinic, and they said if he doesn't die in 3 days, he will make it for sure Was taking my other animals there, vet Is not friendly, very unprofessional and expensive and they charge you for unnecessary tests! read more

What isn't great about this place?! A hard working woman with a huge heart started her OWN shelter to help the HELPLESS! She also started MULTIPLE low cost vet clinics! Her staff works hard to keep all animals healthy and they are actually nice to people! They have a new cat manager that words hard along side their very nice dog manager! Everyone their is dedicated to what they do and they NEVER give up on an animal! An amazing place with amazing staff! I adopted my pup from there and they made sure I was the proper fit for him since he suffers from a neurological disorder and sometimes acts out. I've had him for 2 years now and with tons of training he is a lot better! In addition, they are a NO KILL shelter! I highly recommend this shelter. read more

The shelter has always been the go to place for all of my cat's needs. I am on a fixed income and they have accommodated me at every turn. When we needed Dr. services they got us an apt with the Vet - she was very caring and very reassuring. The shelter is a great place and deserving of your support. It would be a giant tragedy if they had to shut the doors. read more

First time I have ever bought a cat from them and it will be the last time. My mother and I kept asking why her breathing sounded the way that it did and they kept telling us that she was purring. I have another cat at home so I know what purring sounds like. They gave me a medication for her after I called and complained that she was released to my care in that condition. They also told me a couple times that I signed a contract to take her home, so I should have realized that she was sick before I took her, which we tried to ask questions but they brushed it off that she was purring. The medication is making her even sicker, she has diarrhea and she is vomiting everything up. They continuously told me that it was environment change. Don't know how 10 minutes could make her have trouble breathing, sneezing and liquid coming out of her nose. I called the Wellness center to get an appointment and asked if they could give me recommendations on how to help her until she is seen and they told me that they can not give me any recommendations until she is seen, and they could not get a SICK cat in for a week. Absolutely ridiculous. I called a different vet and they gave me sympathy over the phone, recommendations on what to do, and they even fit her in to be seen in 1 day. Makes me wonder if they actually care about their cats, or if they are all about dogs. I do not recommended going here unless you want to spend more money on vet bills and medications to get your cat in better health. Glad I got her when I did, or god knows what condition she would have been in. read more

I took Duke our chiwinnie in to the clinic yesterday for a shot and to have his nails clipped since 2 vets in the area couldn't HANDLE him or want to. I found the clinic clean and the people very helpful. Dr.Bahl was wonderful and caring the price was fair and a little cheaper then the other 2 vets I have used. Duke was a Anna Jet pet last December and we love him to death, but he's scarred of so many things, but we are working with him, he really is a great dog and were so thankful for have him! read more

I can't say enough good about the ANNA Shelter. We adopted our dog Rascal from them a few years ago and I've since visited a few times to drop off donations and supplies to support their efforts. The facility itself doesn't have the plush and fancy digs like that of another well known corporate shelter in town, but the place is kept clean and well maintained. They bend over backwards to ensure that the animals are well cared for and do their dead level best to try and find forever homes for each one. These people truly supercede the definition of "kind and compassionate". As far as the staff and volunteers are concerned, they are very pleasant to deal with and are always friendly and helpful to visitors. What I also love about them is the fact they are a "no kill" shelter and are strong advocates for anti cruelty laws. I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone looking to adopt a pet, but I also would like to encourage people to visit their website and support them in any they can. I couldn't be more upset about they way I was treated by the the snotty Kelly who works there! I live over an hour away with excitement and joy about adopting and giving a puppy that I had to much love for an amazing home to be put down by them!! There was absolutely no good communication about anything!! I went up there twice and on Thursday when the lady I talked to Wednesday had me so excited and convinced I was going home with the pup to not go home with that pup was just as heart breaking for me then seeing those dogs laying on concrete floors!!! And your going to tell me I can't take that dog home because my Norwegian Elk Hound is an outdoor dog!!!! If you know so much about dogs you would know that they HATE being warm!! So why would I make my dog do something he hates to do which is being inside full time!!! I know my dog! You don't! I'm still overly upset about this and as much as my heart aches for all the dogs at the Anna Shelter I will never deal with there staff again or say anything nice about the way they handled my situation!! read more
