SLICE & PEPSI REVIEW Located between the two Design & Consign stores on Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA, Anna's Pizza pizzeria was in the perfect spot to deal with my hunger pangs after the walkabout in the antique and estate sale emporiums. You could call it the "luck of the draw," but Anna's was owned/operated by a Brooklyn, NY, native who had pizza making in his DNA. I asked for a regular slice of pie with added mushrooms, reheated to well done finish, and a Diet Pepsi. That is exactly what was served me by Martina, the friendly server. The crust was thin with good char on the undercarriage; fresh shrooms and a satisfying 'snap' with each bite. The tomato sauce was slightly sweet and the mozzarella counterpointedly salty, for compelling balanced flavors. This was an excellent reheater. As we cashed out, I complimented the dude at the register, telling him I was from Washington Heights, Manhattan, and his tomato pie tasted like real Big Apple pizza. One thing about Anna's is as soon as you walk it in smells delicious. I love the smell of pizza so it's definitely going to give fresh pizza smells. The bread with my spaghetti carbonara was DELICIOUS. It absolutely stole the show. My friend and I were in a rush during our lunch break and our waitress was SUPER accommodating. Loved that! Unfortunately they were out of garlic knots...at 12pm on a Thursday. Definitely not the best look. The carbonara was okay as well. 40 plus years__ The pizza here used to be fresh, crispy and only used the best ingredients. We used to eat in a couple times a month and have carry out (pizza or subs) as often as once a week. The pizza today is good, but has lost its zip for us relative the ingredients and quality of the crust. We rarely eat there anymore and only get subs on occasion.. Maybe once a month or so. While not convenient for carryout, we now drive to Denbigh for sit down eat in pizza. No names cause not trying to promote another place. Just hoping Anna's turns this around.. read more

We hadn't been here in a long time - when we first moved to the neighborhood, everyone recommended this Italian place. We tried it and weren't terribly impressed, so I didn't go back. This summer, they worked with some other local businesses to support kids summer reading, and my kiddo won two free pizzas. So I figured I'd give it another shot. Kids got cheese pizza both times - I added garlic knots. Once I got spaghetti with meatballs and once I got gnocchi with vodka sauce. Both were just sort of eh - the gnocchi was over cooked and there was nothing special about the sauces. The garlic knots are legit the best I've ever had though, and the pizza was ok. It's edible but I'm not jumping at the but to go back - maybe for the knots at some point. read more

Is it too much to ask that you put all the ingredients in the dish on the menu! My fav is the chicken cacciatore and it does not list olives or mushrooms in the dish. So I asked if they could not put them in since I have weird allergic reactions to mushrooms and hate the taste of olives. Was told to eat the dish as is or don't eat it at all by male person on the phone. The men in the restaurant are so so so rude and just don't care about customer service at all! Don't ask about allergies if you are not willing to do anything about them with you food and put all ingredients on the menu if you are going to serve the food, that's false advertising of your food! read more

I won't totally wreck the business because I haven't tried the food, mainly due to the business' own policy. Our friends in NoVA recommended Anna's to us as they were friends with the owners. So last night I called for a pizza delivery and was told "no credit cards after 4 p.m. What? Only cash after 4 on a Friday night? What business doesn't take a credit card, especially during COVID? Business must be over the top to turn me away (their choice) over cash. I have loads of it but I'm not taking change over chances of catching some disease from the money (realize that is my choice but not an unreasonable one). Even if the business doesn't want to incur the cc % the card company charges they can pass it on to the customer, but if so that doesn't explain why the policy is only part of the business day. Maybe we are missing something by not going to Anna's (some of the reviews suggest not so), and maybe they have a better product, but their customer relations is for squat. It was hard for me to pick a rating because our family had different opinions, so here is how I rated it... I gave them one star because their meatball sub is as great as I remember from childhood. Great flavor, amazing sauce and good bread. We got one order and split it between the 4 of us. I gave them their second star because of the cheese pizza. My daughter and I ordered our pizza with half just cheese and it was really good. I wish we had ordered an entire cheese pizza as we both wanted more. The cheese was perfect and the crust was yummy. The last star I gave them was for the server. She was a little rushed in her speaking which may come off to some as rude but i don't think it was intended so. She had a great sense of humor, problem solved to help our requests, was attentive and efficient. They lost a star because my husband ordered the other half of our pizza with pepperoni and it was ridiculously greasy. Pretty much inedible. There was a mass amount of pepperoni, like stacks 4 high in one spot. This added way more oil and grease to the pizza than any stomach could tolerate. It makes me sad because my husband had been looking forward to taking the kids to the place he had grownup eating at, only to leave hungry. He ate the crust and that was it. They lost the last star for the owner's customer service. My husband gave his feed back to the server and then went to pay. The owner stopped cooking to ring him up but did not utter a word to mark the entire time. He did not ask how the meal was or even smile. My husband was not happy with the owners lack of care. Next time we will try somewhere else. Sad, I did love the cheese pizza. Maybe the one in Hampton that I grew up with will be better. read more

I came here about four years ago and had a decent pizza. We came to eat some sub sandwiches. My husband and I split a chicken parmigiana $10 for a "large". Our friend ordered an Italian sub which seemed very skimpy on meat. They have the toasted bread going for them but everything else was not worth it. A chewy overcooked piece of chicken, small amount of Italian sauce and lil bit of cheese. The place was empty with only one other couple at eight at night on a Friday. Been here twice. i had the Greek pizza, which was bland., short on toppings and generally dull. Likewise, their Caprese appetizer was a little mediocre. The Anna's combo (which is their specialty) was good, lots of veggies. I had the White Pizza last night and it was one of the best I've ever had. strong flavors of garlic and feta cheese. It needed more toppings, which seems to be a theme with Anna's. I'll be coming back again, I want to try out the Margharita pizza next. Pizza is a good classic NY style, super thin crust. They go easy on the crust, which is great for those watching carbs. i hear nearby Navy ship crew will come here and fill up the place. The pasta sauce is very tasty, but I don't grab takeout here as often as I would if I didn't dislike the customer service at the counter. In a word, surly. Most recent annoyance: they have paper takeout/delivery menus on the counter. The menu says that you can add a small garden salad to your pasta order for $2.00, so I ordered salad, but was told I couldn't get that on a takeout order. I asked if the green paper menu was the takeout menu, and I was told that it was. I recommended that they should change the menu. read more

Ordered take out, one Italian sub and one fresh mozzarella panini. Got there in 15 minutes as quoted on the phone and both sandwiches are stone cold. The panini always comes with tomato on it even though it's not on the menu but on the occasions I request for no tomato they always tell me "it doesn't come with tomato." The Italian sub is COVERED in lettuce and just has a strange taste, the meat is what I think it is. Really lackluster for $20. The food is good/fine and came out quickly. We had a small salad, garlic knots, pesto linguini, and lamb Gyro. The garlic knots were a little hard and oily especially with the marinara sauce. Their homemade dressings and cheese cake (a little sweet for me) were very good. Service was delayed because of potential understaffing but the waitress was friendly, efficient and greeted us kindly. We only have a 30 minute lunch break & they know that we can't go back out the gate after 12:30. My wife and I had a 10 hour train ride ahead of us, from Virginia to New York, after a 3 day dance event. I was determined to find something fresh and filling for our trip. Let's get right past the friendly attitude, welcoming smile, patience with my order ---- I got all of this, and this sense of family welcoming me to their home while they prepared some yummy food for me. Oh, yes, the food. Listen, when I order a Philly cheese steak - (which is rare ... get it... "rare"?), I want to satisfy my carnivore side. I was not disappointed and devoured mine before my wife even opened the wrapper to hers. Fresh veggies. Well-seasoned steak. They even asked, because I was traveling, if I wanted my mayo the side so my sub would not get soggy. I got a head nod from wife after her second bite. After days of dancing, my muscles craved protein. They got protein! I thought ahead and ordered a few slices of pizza for the road. Traditional, classic slice. The sauce has to be home made. Some of you might not know this, but this little place is one of my favorites for Italian. Yep, pizza is great, but you can order penne pasta with their meat sauce, add fresh garlic ( I love garlic ), salad, and bread knots --- you're not moving! Oh, don't forget the "classic" Chianti Wine. Busy spot on Friday/Saturday evenings, orders to go keeps them hopping. It's not classy by any means, very causal dress. Good desserts and of course, family owned. Located in an old strip shopping center off of Warwick Blvd. in Newport News. Cozzy's Comedy Club is just a few doors down.
