SLICE & PEPSI REVIEW Located between the two Design & Consign stores on Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA, Anna's Pizza pizzeria was in the perfect spot to deal with my hunger pangs after the walkabout in the antique and estate sale emporiums. You could call it the "luck of the draw," but Anna's was owned/operated by a Brooklyn, NY, native who had pizza making in his DNA. I asked for a regular slice of pie with added mushrooms, reheated to well done finish, and a Diet Pepsi. That is exactly what was served me by Martina, the friendly server. The crust was thin with good char on the undercarriage; fresh shrooms and a satisfying 'snap' with each bite. The tomato sauce was slightly sweet and the mozzarella counterpointedly salty, for compelling balanced flavors. This was an excellent reheater. As we cashed out, I complimented the dude at the register, telling him I was from Washington Heights, Manhattan, and his tomato pie tasted like real Big Apple pizza. He smiled proudly, and said, "I'm from Brooklyn..." 'Nuff said! I just shook his hand. "Thank you, brother!"

One thing about Anna's is as soon as you walk it in smells delicious. I love the smell of pizza so it's definitely going to give fresh pizza smells. The bread with my spaghetti carbonara was DELICIOUS. It absolutely stole the show. My friend and I were in a rush during our lunch break and our waitress was SUPER accommodating. Loved that! Unfortunately they were out of garlic knots...at 12pm on a Thursday. Definitely not the best look. The carbonara was okay as well. Nothing super exciting but as I mentioned the bread was delicious.

We hadn't been here in a long time - when we first moved to the neighborhood, everyone recommended this Italian place. We tried it and weren't terribly impressed, so I didn't go back. This summer, they worked with some other local businesses to support kids summer reading, and my kiddo won two free pizzas. So I figured I'd give it another shot. Kids got cheese pizza both times - I added garlic knots. Once I got spaghetti with meatballs and once I got gnocchi with vodka sauce. Both were just sort of eh - the gnocchi was over cooked and there was nothing special about the sauces. The garlic knots are legit the best I've ever had though, and the pizza was ok. It's edible but I'm not jumping at the but to go back - maybe for the knots at some point.

I'm not big into Italian food so maybe that's why. But just this Friday, a friend in a social group celebrated her birthday. So I decided to join in and finally check out this spot. Let's see how the night went, shall we? Our party had a reserved table up front by the check-in booth and the bar. Inside the decor is a bit dated, but everything was clean and tidy. Overall, it's not that big of a restaurant, but it can fit a decent crowd. After enjoying some salad and garlic bread, we were all ready to order. My meal was Pollo Marsala. Overall, the dish was good. I preferred slightly bigger chicken breasts, but what I had was good enough. The protein was cooked nicely and there was enough spaghetti to mix with the chicken and mushrooms. I also had some grated parmesean cheese which added some flavor to the dish. What a wonderful night for all of us. Table service, hospitality and good food. You couldn't have asked for anything more. Yours truly will be back soon :)

The cheese sticks were very good and had a gourmet quality to them. The bread was also great, very soft and flavorful. It had it cheese and other herbs and was complimentary. Our server was great, we had our waters filled right when we walked in and throughout the dinner. She was constantly checking in on us. The restaurant is fairly upscale, dinner had candle lights and the tables were a little close together. Definitely a good spot for a date night. Highly recommend.

While others may have a more extensive wine list, Azzurri blends family-friendly comfort food with a warm, inviting, and clean atmosphere. Pair that with the friendly, personable staff and restaurant full of regulars and locals, and you have a winner all around. I even saw one couple walk in, hold up two fingers, and were recognized and seated immediately by the owner (by the way, this place is owned and run by a family--one gentleman even cooks in the kitchen some while his mother serves guests.) I've ordered the same dish elsewhere and this was the best I've had. It was absolutely clear to me that everything truly was homemade. If I had any suggestions, it would be a more extensive wine list and olives in the house salad! But that's trivial really, because this place is already a total gem. I look forward to many more meals here. Not pictured here is the pizza; a local fan favorite that I can vouch for.

You could tell the staff was hustling to keep up with all their tables, but they never dropped the ball. Nice cozy vibe too, felt intimate without being cramped. Portions were generous, no complaints there. We had a mix of pastas and pizzas across the table and everyone walked away happy -- food was solidly in the 7.5-8.5/10 range from all of us. Only thing , entrees come with a salad, but you can upgrade to soup instead. I'm not really a salad guy so I asked about soup, and I'm glad I did because it was really good. Just wish that was more clearly listed on the menu (maybe I missed it, but a few of us didn't realize it was an option until I asked). Definitely worth a revisit.

I felt comfortable and engrossed in conversation with the staff and other patrons in a way that had me coming back the next night for dinner again. All too often, the sports-pub vibe will let you down, but this place takes each item on its menu seriously and cares considerably about what they're plating in front of you. It makes me feel like something special is happening in that kitchen like the show "The Bear." If the bartenders ask you if you want the potato salad as your side because it's made in house, then trust him. He's telling you this for a reason because you're about to embark on a culinary experience of a lifetime. What I assume is typically a college bar, this place is quite a wonderful little find. Mind you, I happened to come through on two evenings during the summer holidays so maybe the vibe is different in October but I can't recommend it more based on my experience.

I came in for lunch today with 2 teenagers. We ordered a large cheese pizza. Not one of us ate a 2nd piece. The bottom of the crust was pretty well-cooked, almost burnt, so maybe that's why. It was tough and flavorless. Not at all like any other brick- fired pizza I've had. Would not recommend.
