Easy 5 stars for a beloved bbq chain I've come to love. Checked them out for the first time in Newport News. Caught them at a slow time before 5 on a weekday and I was the only customer. Service was immediate and friendly at the counter to order. My son and I both wanted their legendary pulled pork. I got a platter (half pound) and son sandwich, I tried the collards for the first time with baked beans. My son got a side of fries. We decided to try a brownie, also first time. The drink station had dining room were tidy. Food pushed out in minutes. I immediately noticed they took care of my son on fries with what appears to be a double order. Everything was tasty and glad I tried the collards, super yum. The brownie topped our meal off nicely. If you've never tried Mission you should. When Sophia and I looked for a place to have lunch a few Saturdays ago, we ate here which is a familiar spot. They are franchised, but we've never had a bad meal here. Let's see how this visit turned out. It wasn't packed with customers when we dined-in which was just fine with the both of us. The staff greeted us when we walked inside. Even one of them gave me a compliment on the shirt I was wearing. Definitely a real good feeling when they make you feel welcome. Just like before, we ordered at the counter before getting seated. My selection was a combo plate of moist beef brisket and sausage with fries and a drink and some of their sauces. Everything was cooked well and I got full halfway. I hate to do negative post, but I have to be honest and my rating may be a bit generous. I haven't had Bbq in a while so I decided to stop before traveling on the road back home. Disappointed-portion size too small for the price. Let me start by saying I love a good bbq. So much so, I've traveled to Texas, Kansas and North Carolina. My next stop is Memphis. Ribs here were too salty. Beef brisket was good, but no flavor other than salt and the portion size was tiny, not small. IMO mission BBQ is more like a fast food chain and is the Mc Donald's version of BBQ. I've been disappointed every time and this has to be my last visit. My husband chose Mission BBQ for dinner tonight (he always leans toward BBQ or fried chicken). We were greeted with friendly smiles as soon as we walked in. I went with the brisket platter, paired with coleslaw and fries, while he ordered the pulled pork sandwich. The brisket was tender, juicy, banging and consistently delicious every time I come here at this location. The coleslaw didn't have much flavor, but the fries were hot, crispy, and so good. Great grub. Not just the best tasting bbq in town, but the only one we know of that uses real ingredients, including no seed oils or bad sugars in their sauces (so many good ones) or sides that we know of. The brisket and the jalapeno sausages are our favorite of the meats but we've had everything and liked it all. The cornbread and their seasonal sweet potatoes are amazing. Staff is always nice. Place is always clean, including the bathrooms which to me is always an indication of a restaurant's sanitation altogether. If you like sandwiches, the chopped brisket is delish. read more

I have been to Mission BBQ quite a few times, and decided to review. I also have a bit of a rant I will save for the end, after I tell you what is good. First of all, the food is good. A bit pricey, but likely worth the price. There are more than a few types of meat and several sauce on the table. Sides go well with bbq, including mac and cheese, baked beans, green beans, fries. Portions are quit large! The corn bread is tasty enough. Seating is generous with large booths and tables. Drinks are self serve and unsweet tea is nicely brewed. There did not appear to be any children's menu to order from but they did offer a small drink option. I just gave the kids some of mine and ordered what turned out to be a huge side of fries. Mission BBQ's entire schtick is honoring the military and first responders. The place is decorated like a military themed Cracker Barrell where the guys from American Pickers unloaded more than a few old vets' hoards. A huge American Flag hangs in the center, to which all eyes are turned to sing the National Anthem at exactly noon each day. You can be mid bite and you are peer pressured into standing for the canned rendition complete with horn freestyle. I spent 40 years in the military and working with veterans. I am a disabled veteran myself. Never in all of my assignments was I required to stand in a non military off base entity in the middle of my lunch. I despise this because the ONLY reason Mission BBQ is doing this is to pander to the 'patriotic thank you for your service types' to make more than a few bucks. Complete shilling of forced patriotism for profit. If I eat there I stand outside until the forced production is completed and people can get back to their now a bit colder food. Mission BBQ, I see you and I see your lone 'Parking for Veterans Only' in front of the entrance. Do you know in our military and veteran inundated community how many qualify for your token parking space? I can overlook your decor as what it is, a hodge podge of miscellaneous militaria. Wow! The portion sizes are huge at Mission BBQ. During our most recent visit, we ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich with a side of baked beans and iced tea, plus a brisket sandwich with a side of coleslaw. The Pulled Pork overflowed from the bun -- in a good way. Both sandwiches were delicious. In the past we've had their platters with corn bread, and they were very good too. They offer unsweetened iced tea (with fresh lemons!) and sweet tea, plus lemonade as well as soft drinks. The service is so friendly. While it's a counter service restaurant, they even had someone come around to check on us and offer samples. The interior of the restaurant is military themed -- Mission BBQ -- with photos, patches, challenge coins, and more. All the food I've ever had at Mission barbecue has really been great. They are pricey. I have to say my favorite is the smoked turkey with the white Alabama sauce. You do place your order at the register and wait for it to be called so there's no actual waiters or waitresses, but the staff is always friendly and I've never experienced a delay. My husband and I visited Mission BBQ for lunch one weekday with my family while visiting the area for Christmas. I'd never eaten at Mission before, but I'll definitely be a repeat customer based on this visit. My husband ordered the brisket plate, and I had the salad with chopped pork. The brisket was unbelievably tender and juicy -- it was the best we've had at a casual restaurant. The cornbread was sweet and served nicely warmed, but the fries could have been a bit crispier. My salad was nicely made, and a very large serving. I couldn't believe how much pork they added on top, too! The pork was so tender and juicy. It was so much better than Midwood Smokehouse or any other local establishment in Charlotte. What's really great about Mission is that they are a patriotic business. My sister-in-law told me that every day at noon, the staff pledge allegiance to the flag during the national anthem. We just missed it on our visit, but I'd love to be around for this in the future. My favorites are the Georgia mustard, the Memphis, and the Texas. *Pork-well seasoned, super moist. *Atmosphere-lots of love for the military, also, they played country and classic rock music, which I'm always in favor of. *Sweet tea and unsweet tea are available Cons *Ribs-couldn't taste much seasoning, the meat wasn't very moist. Ribs are tough to get right, but these needed a good amount of sauce, salt, and pepper. This place continues to be a shining example of customer service in my eyes. Visited this branch today after receiving my order I went to get my drink at the fountain. When getting some ice my pinky accidentally hit the soda lever near by. Obviously that was my fault and a accident, after that didn't think much of it and continued putting my lid on my drink. Mission BBQ opened it's doors at noon today out in Newport News! This location is on the corner of Jefferson and Turnberry going towards the Yorktown/Williamsburg area. I have been waiting for Mission to open for the last couple weeks since I first had it over in Chesapeake off Battlefield Blvd. I have worked in this area since 2013 so take out options for lunch and dinner are getting repetitive. I also am a BIG BBQ fan so this restaurant nearby was right up my alley. Opening days for restaurants can be rough. I decided to give it a shot and see if they had ran out of food at 2030- 30 minutes before closing. To my surprise the kitchen was still pumping out sides, fries and smoked goods with a smile. I order the BBQ sandwich with Belle sauce, fries and green beans. I had never had the green beans but I think it is my favorite side! They are canned but mixed with bacon and onion. They have a bit of a bite to them- the portion size was pretty good for the price. Portions can be skimpy at BBQ restaurants around here. The BBQ sandwich itself was great. The bun didn't get soggy and they piled the BBQ on! You can get the BBQ with a vinegar sauce or without sauce so you can add your own. They do have slaw for an additional price. The fries are great! Well seasoned and they have a good amount of crunch and texture to them. What really impressed me was the management while cooking the fries. The manager was standing at the food prep table ensuring every order looked good to go. He checked the fries and had them redone twice while I was waiting. This really showed me that the restaurant cared about what they are serving up.. they could have just thrown subpar fries in the bag and called it a day but they didn't. I was given a free brownie for waiting for fries. There's a 3.99 cup you can purchase that has .99 cent refills when you return and $2 from the cup purchase goes to a nonprofit organization. They have soda fountain drinks as well as iced tea, lemonade AND glass bottled soda. The sauces have descriptions on the 6 pack case they're kept in.. a lot of people didn't see the sauce container so they weren't sure what BBQ sauce they wanted so they told the worker if they sweet, vinegar, mustardy, smoky, etc sauce. Overall I am actually really impressed by my first visit on their opening day 30 minutes from closing. Hopefully they keep up the good work and put forth the amount of effort they had so the restaurant thrives in this area. read more
