I have posted about this place and how I was treated horribly when trying to setup a reservation for an after funeral reception. I am here again to now talk about work practices. I recently spoke with a former employee of this "establishment" and they shared with me a rather demeaning behavior from the owner. They will repeatedly whistle or snap their fingers at their employees to get their attention. To me this is in just such poor taste. These are people. Not dogs. They deserve respect. Anyone who does and think it's ok to treat their employees like this does not deserve any of my hard earned money. What a beautiful find. Tiny store front. Nothing special about the place. Everything is special about the owner/chef who is always there. Max is talented beyond belief. The food, service, great $40 wines that would be $100 in another setting. Home made Gelato that makes me beg for more. Scallops and shrimp arribiata. The best I have ever had. Quaint restaurant with a cozy homey atmosphere. Quintessential local spot. The staff were friendly and, I'm guessing, the owner was nice and helpful with questions I had. However I was extremely disappointed with my food, I had to return it. I don't want to tear down a small owned business but I expected much more flavor and better quality than I received. This was my first and only visit. Three co-workers and I were meeting for our monthly outing. Two of us arrived a little early and walked in. There is a "wait to be seated sign" as soon as you enter. No one approached us but the owner/chef asked from a nearby table how he could help us. I thought that was a little odd since we were standing in front of the "wait to be seating sign" Okay not a big deal. We responded that it would be 4 of us so he instructed one of the servers to direct us to a table. We sat looked over the menu and ordered drinks while we waited for the rest of our party. Three of us ordered because the 4th was running late. I ordered the chicken cheese steak, one co-worker ordered the cheese steak and the 4rd ordered I believe it was the penne vodka. The 4 person came and ordered a small pizza. When 3 of the meals came out, the Penne Vodka looked different then what I've seen before and yes before you ask I have seen authentic Italian Penne Vodka when I visited Italy a couple of years ago and I don't recall in either of the cities that I visited did the Penne Vodka look like the dish that my co worker received. It just didn't look appealing. When the server returned my co worker said that she didn't want the dish and that it could be taken away. The server asked if she wanted something else and my co worker's response was I'm not sure right now. In less than a minute the owner/chef rushes to the table and starts asking why didn't she want it and she explained that it just wasn't what she expected but that she was still willing to pay for it. That didn't suffice for him he continued with the questions, "have you ever had the dish before" blah. It became quite annoying. Honestly at that point who would want someone to prepare anything else with all of the animosity. I am giving 3 stars because my chicken cheesesteak was ok nothing fabulous and the 4th co worker's pizza was good and the sever was good. The steak and cheese was not eaten by my co worker either but she didn't bother to send it back because we didn't want a repeat of the pasta. Her comment was the meat didn't have a very good flavor. I also thought that it was a little pricey because refills are not free, no sides with the sandwiches, a side of fries $5 the portion didn't reflect the price. To each its own. read more

After being ignored at our chosen spot in Smithfield we headed back for some sure to win us Bojangles when I remembered there used to be a BBQ place at the nearby shopping center. My Yelp search told me the BBQ was gone but in its place was this darling Italian eaterie. I had no expectations as I was just going by the photos-and they had me hooked, line and sinker! Hubby asked me what was I ordering & I replied "one of everything!!" I was pretty sure I knew the answer but I asked our server if the lasagna was homemade & since it was that's what I chose. It was so very fresh tasting, reminding me of the stuffed raviolis we would get in Palau, Sardinia. The multiple lasagna layers were so plentiful that the portion size was enough for me to have leftovers-twice! My husband is a man of few words but the ten that he had to share regarding his Gnocchi Bolognese were all quite complimentary. Honestly, this place is so far from our house but the food so good that we immediately made a promise to ourselves to be back in a month. I mentioned to our server Caitlin to let the chef know how much we loved our lunch that he immediately came out & introduced himself. It was our pleasure meeting Max and hearing and feeling the love and warmth he has for his home country that we were transported back to our time in Italy. Napoli è is an hour from our home but we are already making plans to go back. And Max even gave us his business card for us to call when we're on our way for reservations. You can not get this type of hospitality at a chain restaurant or even that little Cafe that we tried to dine at in Smithfield. If you don't dine here you are doing your taste buds a huge disservice and really, isn't life already full of disappointments. Why put your belly through that? read more

Possibly one of the best pizza places in Hampton roads. The bread is amazing. The staff is amazing. The owner is not only always there but is also interacting with the customers. If you are in the area this definitely the pizza place to go to. My only complaints are that the pasta dishes are good but not great, it's small so it is frequently pretty full, the state of the restaurant is ok at best, and they stop seating an hour before closing. If they had a nicer location it would go a long way. Also, an hour before is pretty early for a places that closes at 830. Some people don't eat dinner before 730. Which I find funny since the owner says he from Italy and in my many trips there most people in Italy don't eat dinner until later. It's pretty common in Italy to see people eat dinner at 9 or 10 even with children. read more

I stopped and picked up my food and paid for it and even had some little small talk with the staff. After picking up my order, I was headed out the door with both hands full and I hear, "today's biggest tipper"........ No, I don't tip on food when I stopped to pick it up. What am I tipping you for? Getting my food out of the kitchen that I paid for? Ring me up at the register in order to take my money? You didn't walk my food out to my car or even offering me napkins and extra plates. I'm pretty sure it was the employee that looks like she fell face first into a tacklebox that said this. 100% mouth watering Italian food. I had the stuffed shells and my husband had crab cakes atop a bed of fettuccine in Gorgonzola cream sauce. It's difficult to not overdo it with the fresh bread with garlic oil. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. The owner, Max checks on patrons to be certain all is well with the meal. Have been here several times, and have been to Naples Italy 7 or 8 times. If Max is offering a special that isn't on the regular menu, get it. He is a great chef. I tried the cardboard and they asked traditional or American. I tried traditional and since I make it at home myself (with bacon instead of panchetta) it was very good. Next time I went in I got American it was much richer I suspect made with heavy cream vs.egg. Both were very tasty. Some things are smaller portion but quality costs more. If you want quantity, go to the restaurants that buy frozen prepared food. I will take this food that is prepared and served with love. read more

Third time here! Still loving the food, especially the AlFresco Pizza...it is so fresh and delicious. The only disappointing thing I have noticed is that the Bread is available for purchase at $9/loaf...which let me tell you is definitely good! Trust me! But my issue is that they also charge you for the dipping oil. I rarely go to an Italian restaurant where they charge for bread, let alone the dipping oil. Again...the bread is amazing and I will gladly pay for it, just think the additional charge for oil is a bit much! They should at least consider providing the first ramekin as complimentary with the bread purchase and then only charging for refills. Just a thought. read more

Excellent! The bread is to die for. I am told it is fresh baked when you first arrive. All I know is the Italian loaf comes to the table hot and served with real butter. It is truly wonderful to a bread lover like me. I ordered Pollo Francese and my friend had Shrimp Capri. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. This small, family owned restaurant is cozy and clean and bright. Our server was great. She was helpful, personable and took very good care of us. The owner came out and asked how we enjoyed our meal. The two of them made us feel like regular customers instead of first timers. We will definitely return. read more

I was worried because it was pricey and I didn't want to hate something that cost so much... BUT it DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! I dream of this pasta still. The sauce is amazing and the crab cake is also amazing. They also sell this bread they bake in house. That bread is so good. We also tried appetizers, arancini were something new to me but liked them, and the lunch special on the bucatini with meatballs which we realized after it was like spaghetti but thicker. The food is just so-so. Not horrible but not that great either. I had the Veal Masala. It had an off taste, sort of like when you use cheap ingredients. It was overly sweet and the veal was slightly tough. My husband had the Chicken Florentine and it was salty. The wait staff are friendly. The owner visits with customers. He interrupted our dinner a few times. Not everyone wants to converse with the boss. Of note: One of the workers said it was hard to keep good people here.
