Review Visit: June 1st, 2014 Annie's may or may not have any Frozen-branded custard on sale. While on one of our many trips to Edwardsville to hang out with our college friends, they casually recommended we try out Annie's for some sweets and delights. Next thing I knew, we were hopping in a car with our hangovers and hitting the road. Annie's, from what I remember, is like any other town's ice cream shack that is open year round. They offer your quick but yummy food options, such as: hot dogs, custard, sundaes, pie, and various other sweets. During our visit, we all snagged a few small things. Nursing some hangovers, we all gravitated towards the greasy offerings versus the cold stuff. Chili dogs were what we picked and snacked on, except for the one friend who was feeling 110%. She got some ice cream to go. The chili dog was decent but nothing to write home about. It definitely hit the spot. As for the interior, I don't remember much about it. The little that I do recall doesn't strike me as overly impressive but also not lacking. There were tables to sit at and ample room should it be busy during the summer hours. I wish I could have more to put in this blog post but since this was the only time we came here and it was after a fun night, this is all about it. Also, sadly, my friends have moved away from Edwardsville, but that doesn't mean I won't try to swing by it again on my way to St. Louis some day. I came here to get a shake with my friends and I asked for the blender to just be wiped down because I had an allergy, not severe in any way but just to help. Someone then came over and told me they can't serve me, and I proceeded to ask why and the owner proceeded to come over and very rudely say they don't serve allergies. Although I could have not mentioned it and been fine, I just didn't want my stomach to be a little upset later on. Owner was very rude. read more

Let me first start by saying, I don't even like custard. So, when I say that Annie's is the most delicious custard around, you should believe me. It is the only custard I not only stomach, but I actually crave. It is delicious. Absolutely delicious. I like several things on the menu and highly recommend coming here for a sweet treat! Had a sweet tooth that needed something sweet so ice cream is my go-to treat. However, this was not ice cream but frozen custard. What's the difference you ask, frozen custard has a tendency to melt quicker if not consumed in a sufficient timeframe. Anyway, I had the apple, caramel pie concrete. Retro style shop with ice cream, cakes & hot dogs. Where else can you get a chili dog, chips & a drink for $5.25?! The food & ice cream is decent, but I think we enjoy the vibes more. My kids always love stopping here. They now have a free little library out front too, so your little one can bring a book to leave or take a book to read. read more

Annie's used to be the absolute best. Over the last few months, service has gotten slower and the orders have gotten smaller. A large now resembles a child's dessert. The toppings have also decreased. The last time I got a sundae, it had a teaspoon of hot fudge. Determined to give them one last shot, I waited in line for 45 minutes tonight. I ordered a large concrete and a large brownie sundae. You can see what we received in the image. I called to say the order was wrong to see if I could go to the door to swap the order. They told me they would comp me, but I'd have to wait in line again (which would have taken another 45 minutes). I paid $15 for this order AND tipped the staff. Never again. read more

Have always enjoyed Annie's, but today was the worst experience ever. Ordered their Clarific, which we've had on multiple occasions, but today the small Clarific was bitter, and had an artificial flavor. To boot, it was only filled 3/4 full! We may try again, but not for a while. This was not up to their regular quality, which I expect to be much better. read more

Pretty solid choice if you're in the mood for frozen custard (I always am). I've only gone once but I was not disappointed. They've got a wide variety of toppings and flavors as well as super friendly staff with an equally friendly environment. I just went through Annie's drive through. The concrete that I received was about 1/2 full. That's stingy - even by their standards. I told the worker who said that she couldn't take it back, but would make me another. I agreed. Then, a manager (or owner) came to the window with my freshly made concrete (closer to 2/3 full - Annie's normal). She said that she would only give it to me if I gave her the first one back so that she could throw it away. She made the point of saying how she was now just going to throw it away (after the employee already told me to keep it). I don't know whether she was the manager or owner. What I do know is that she shouldn't be working in the food industry and making a point of being wasteful just to be mean to a customer. Most ice cream places mound the ice cream over the cup. Annie's creates what looks like a little whirlpool of missing ice cream! Don't complain. They will replace your food ONLY if they can throw it away (after they tell you to keep it)! I try to support small local business, esp. through the COVID pandemic. But, I draw the line at being ripped off followed by rude behavior. If I could give this place a lower review than 1, I would. read more

This place was delicious! Great custard and very homely. I asked for a mint chocolate chip concrete, it's not on their menu, and they made it for me! I think it's called Emerald Chocolate. So tasty. I grew up in North County, and frankly nobody has ever lived up to Fritz's (though they have their own issue with underage poorly paid, poorly trained labor, but that's another story!) Anyway, I had never been to Annie's (it's not really on the way to most things for me) but my cousin's kids love it, and I did happen to be driving by one evening, and saw "Black raspberry" (one of my favorites!) was a special. Well, I was expecting - you know - frozen custard with black raspberries in it. Instead, I got some sort of purple-slime colored concoction with chocolate chunks in it. After one bite, all I noticed was that "artificial flavor" aftertaste. The only thing saving it was the chocolate - even though I didn't expect or want it, at least it was edible! But I could have just gotten a hershey bar for under $2 instead of paying over $6 for the worst concrete I've ever had. read more

I can't believe that I forgot to review this until now I would like to say one thing, this is decent ice cream for the area. The area doesn't always seem like the safest area to be in. The ice cream wasn't bad. It wasn't the greatest ice cream in the world, but it wasn't bad at all. In fact, it was pretty darn good. I enjoyed it a lot. It was thick and creamy, which is always something to enjoy. I would say that I wasn't impressed by the overall look of the place and that most of the tables were dirty. Very few were clean and looked like they hadn't been touch for a couple of hours. Made me not want to eat my ice cream inside again. I don't know if I'll be back or not. This place is not really close by, but I would definitely recommend it to a friend who lives in the area. read more

The most unfriendly manager ever! After ordering a Chicago Dog, she asked me if microwaved was okay . . . OMG! I said no. Then I ordered a regular Hawaiian concrete priced at $5.75 on the menu board. She said that would be $7.xx with tax. It was approximately $7.50. I said you can't charge more for it than what's listed. She said sorry, they haven't yet gotten it changed. Tried this place and it wasn't great at all. I usually keep it simple with my hotdogs, so I don't expect much. Got a dog with sauerkraut and mustard. The sauerkraut was half cold and so was the dog. They took it back and microwave the crap out of it. Just awful, what a waste of money and to top it off a extremely loud group showed up and it just all became so overwhelming with the noise and the running around. Went here after a movie and was excited to try their hotdog for the first time. Waited in drive-thru line 15 min and was finally told they were out of hot dogs. It was almost an hour before closing. Then they have one of the drive thru's where you're pretty much stuck there in line and can't get out. I had to make everyone behind me back up so I could get out. So annoying. This is what you do. It's not so bad. As far as frozen custard, they get plus points for having an easy drive-thru, but minus the points for being at a very busy intersection where its difficult to get out of at times. I've been to this location more than the one on S. Buchanan, and both are about as good. I usually like to call Annie's 'the average' frozen custard shop because nothing really stands out to me as of yet. I have tried a few of their specialty flavors. read more

I go to Annie's when I need a craving and don't want to get out of the car. But I New Year's Eve I finally took my mom and aunt there and walked inside and I don't know why I have not done that before because it's so cute. I like the custard because it's not overly sweet and there is a great supply of toppings, but not too many. My favorite is the cardinal which is strawberries and marshmallows, but I like to add pecans. They make their own praline which smells heavenly when you walk in. But what really sells me on Annies is it everyone of the workers has always been so nice like the Chick-fil-A workers or something. I feel a little guilty going to the new location of Annie's since we're regulars at the original spot on Buchanan/Schwarz, which we can walk to, but the power was out there and at our house for 2 days! Darn tornado. It was busy with evening crowd but the drive-thru was quick, and the concretes as good as always. I am 100% satisfied with a plain vanilla custard because it's so good, but I also go for their flavor of the week or concrete of the week which are often great flavors. Their featured concretes are outstanding as well when I want some goodies mixed in. I hope the other reviewer comes back and orders that Goldie because my wife loves that one and I'm sure they'd make it here. I'm really happy to see Annie's open this new location. It must mean they are doing well, which is great for us since their frozen custard is so good (best around STL in our opinion... apologies to Bobby's and Ted Drewes). And they can really do it right in this new spot, especially with it right across from the Showplace 12 theater. They have a great front window and outdoor seating area. There is even some indoor seating, and bathrooms. It's a great spot to gather and savor a concrete. The drive thru is a major addition too. All around it's a great facility for their frozen treats (and hot dogs too if you want some non-dessert food). I'm not sure what Illini Drive is, but it seems to be the road that Keller Construction is on and the new Sams's Club will be also. Annie's is really right at the southeast corner of Center Grove Rd and Rt 159, across the parking lot from the theater. Road access is from either side. The bike trail (MCT Goshen Trail) isn't too far either - I mention because the original Annie's is a popular spot for the MCT trail riders. We'll continue to go to this location when our power is out... :) ok, whenever it's more convenient. Keep it up, Annie's! read more

I came here because MOST gave them 5 stars!!! Come on... I ordered a strawberry shake. The first attempt was being given to me and I said, I ordered a strawberry. I was told that it WAS a Strawberry. I asked for more strawberries, because this looked like a vanilla shake with seeds! I got the 2nd attempt. It tasted watery. It was simply okay. When told about this every time we went back all they could say was we're sorry. That's it. Whoever does the ordering needs to take a course. Strangely, I am not a big fan of ice cream or custard. Until, I tried Annie's after moving to the Edwardsville area. It is outstanding. They recently opened their second location here in town.
