The restaurant itself is a little outdated and dark. Definitely needs a little deep clean! But let me continue on to the great food and service. Don't know the first thing about customer service or accountability. tried to order pies for a special event and did as requested by person on the phone. Went to pick up the pies and not only were they not ready we were RUDELY berated by worker at restaurant (manager?). I can understand miscommunications between employees, especially new ones and an explanation of that type is all it would have taken. Sure we would have been a little bummed but eventually ok. We went in for lunch with my parents and it was a mistake. The five of us arrived at 11:35 and at 12:40 our food still had not arrived. No one refilled our drinks, explained what the long wait was about, nothing. We finally asked for them to package the food up to take home. When we got home there were no napkins, no flatware, and mediocre at best food. We have tried to patronize Annie's as a neighborhood establishment, but we will think twice about going there in the future. The food...not great, clearly all out of the freezer and microwave. The potato cheese soup had no potatoes. This isn't the first time the food has been not great but it is the first time the service was so bad. I cannot recommend. read more

We went with my son and DiL. They found this treasure upon moving here and wanted to share it with us. I am a chicken fried steak fan and was not disappointed- delicious, good sized portions. The gravy was delicious with the right amount of pepper and chunks of sausage. The BLT was small and not very filling. Overall the sandwiches were good but not great and were served with a handful of potato chips. We would definitely go back for the chicken fried steak and to try other non-sandwich items. Had a chance to meet a friend for breakfast at Annie's' last weekend. Had never been here before but I like to support local businesses when able. Troy (with hurt wrist) seated us and Elsa was our waitress. Good breakfast food. Very good efficient service. Elsa was very friendly! The cinnamon roll with frosting was AMAZING. The staff wasn't that friendly when asking about their sugar free bakery items- they seemed put out. Later was told we had to order a whole pie a day before. We are traveling and wanted it for my 101 yr old godmother. For lunch I ordered a classic BLT as stated on their menu and it came in a hamburger bun that I basically had to make myself. They brought a side of mayo that I had to put that and the lettuce and tomato on to make the sandwich. Very odd and all I could taste is the bun. . I would skip this place. We usually really enjoy whatever we eat at Annie's Place. Sometimes when I deviate from my "usual" I regret it because my usual is SO good and whatever I got on special didn't live up to it. My usual is the teriyaki burger with mushrooms. It is definitely among the best burgers you will find in Topeka. We saw something on TV about this place being closed for awhile due to problems with the KS Dept of Revenue. We were surprised to see you reopened! We've been a few times in the past and the food was mediocre at best. The atmosphere and people were not welcoming. Stopped in on our last night in town for what we thought would be a good, home style dining experience. We arrived at 5:23. We placed our order at 5:30. My wife had a build-your-own-dog. I had a burger. At 6:00 I took a walk around the place to see how busy they were. Two parties in other area (6 people total). 7 people (not including us) in area we were sitting. 15 folks altogether. Only 4 of them came in after us. It took a full 6 minutes for the lady in booth next to us to get the change from her check back. At 6:06 a staff member, not our server, was busing that lady's table. I took the opportunity to say to my wife, loud enough for the staff member to hear, "Do you think we can change our order? At this rate it will be time for breakfast before we get our food." The staff member immediately stopped and left. In about a minute our server came to us and said "Sorry for delay in food. There are two parties in the other room. But that dog will be worth the wait." Finally, our food arrived. 55 minutes after we ordered. And although it was somewhat tasty, neither the dog nor the burger were worth the wait. Our server was pleasant enough. But the wait for the food was inexcusable. As a former bartender AND a former server of food, I fully appreciate a busy establishment and how high volume can affect staff. But this place wasn't busy. Not by a long shot. If you don't mind waiting a long, long time for food that is mediocre at best, hurry on down to Annie's Place. But if you expect good food served in a respectable, timely manner...take your business elsewhere. You'll be glad you did. read more

Annie's has been open since 1986. Over the years I've been a at least two dozen times or so. They are in a great location, easy to access and easy to find. The atmosphere is causal and feels like a family restaurant. They have both booths and tables as well as a bar and can accommodate large groups as well. The menu selection is good, but not excessive. The burgers are delicious and you can't go wrong with them. On my last trip I ordered the Annie's Allouette Burger. Actually, I have a hard time not ordering it the thing is so delicious, and the air fries. As always, the flavor was fantastic and the fries were soft pillows of potato heaven. (For not frying them, the fries are fabulous.) My husband got the special of the day which was a slice of Ham and Potatoes Au Gratin with a fresh baked roll. I think I forgot to mention they bake all their breads and make the pies there, in-house. Not every single trip I've had there has been spectacular - I've had a slice of pie that wasn't anything special and at a company party the meal was just okay. I think it was roast beef. But usually, the food is great and the staff is always very friendly and does everything they can to make your visit pleasant. I wish they'd back down on the prices a bit, but everything is going up all over the place so I can't really blame them - but $9.50 for burger and fries is pushing it in my book. Still, that burger keeps me visiting at least once a year. If you haven't been and you're in the mood for a good burger, give 'em a try. read more

Really regretted suggesting to my family that we eat here. Service was the worst I've had in a long time. The place was not busy but we waited well over an hour and only saw our waitress twice. Tried here last Sunday. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and fries. It took awhile for the food to come out, but there was a large party seated before me. The bacon was delicious and crispy, however the cheese sauce they put on the burger was something else. It tasted to me like the jar of cheese whiz you dip ruffles in. As well, the side of fries was actually 8 potato wedges, air fried, and they were just mushy and a little cold. I took a few friends to lunch there on 5/2/22 as I heard it was a good place. I had eaten there before a few times and it was good but it had been years since I was last there. The place was clean and I got seated in a timely manner while I waited for my friends to arrive. From the get go the waitress named "Julie" was obviously in a bad mood and tried to start a fight or argument about everything I said and I was cordial with her. My friends arrived and she was surly with them and not friendly! Our lunches game several minutes after the lunches of people who had ordered after us and two of us got lunch specials and one got a hamburger. The food was lukewarm and dried out like it had been sitting under a heat light too long. My friend asked for a coffee refill and the waitress literally yelled at her that she already told her she would refill the drinks soon. When the refills didn't happen, we waved her down and asked for our checks which she brought a few minutes later along with the drink refills. I paid in cash and I chose to only tip her 10% as the waitress was so bad and the food inferior. When I paid, I told Julie to keep the change. She came back as we were leaving and slammed my change on the table and glared at me. She did not deserve a bigger tip and my friends said we shouldn't tip her at all. I left her tip on the table and we left as the waitress was so unstable, we didn't want to encounter her again. I thought I was being punked and have expected to have someone stop me on the way out and say it was a practical joke and was being filmed, but it wasn't! I will NEVER go back there again and if you do and you have a middle-aged waitress named Julie; turn around and run out!!!!! read more

Annie's Place has been consistently "pretty good food" for at least the 10 years I've been eating here and that kind of consistency impresses me. They have a Daily Special and a Daily Quiche every day but I recommend looking for these items on the whiteboard when you come in because I have never had any of the staff recite them to me. My favorite here has long been the Allouette Burger [$7.49] or any of their burgers, which are quite excellent but also notable are any of the "Stuffed Spuds" or really, most of the Daily Quiches. I wish I could give it a 3.5 because though I like Annie's, I think the staff can be really hit and miss, sometimes the food takes a ridiculous amount of time (but sometime it doesn't - especially in the late afternoon.) and I would definitely describe it as favored toward the retired set. I have been the only person in the place under 60 who wasn't working there on more than one occasion. All that said, Annie's Place is good choice for locally-owned, non-chain, off-wanamaker classic American cuisine at lunch time. At dinnertime, I'd suggest springing for Brick Oven instead. read more

I regretted suggesting Annie's Place after my experience this evening. I ordered carry-out and was led to the bar to pick it up. A woman put a receipt in front of me and walked away to take orders at tables. I ended up waiting for more than five minutes with no one at the bar to say anything. I want sure if anyone was even working the bar. After finding the host, she assured me the woman I saw was going to help me. That's when the waitress noticed and came back to say she told me to hold on and that my food wasn't ready yet. This was 10-15 minutes after the quoted time of 10-20 minutes to be ready. If she would have been kind enough to say hello and that it wasn't ready, I wouldn't have been worried about it. I got my family's meals and took them home to find out my meal was wrong. I called to let them know, the same waitress was nice about it and they asked me to come back and get a freshly made chicken fried chicken. It was awful. The chicken was just made and it was soft and felt like the flour to coat the chicken was mush. The fried batter was flavorless and I couldn't eat much more than half. At least I got a free slice of apple pie out of it. :/ read more

I went here for lunch on the recommendation of a family member. I was not impressed. We waited about 15 minutes for a server to come take our drink order. We ordered salads from the lunch menu. We then waited 40 minutes for our salads to be brought out. The salad was largely big hunks of iceberg lettuce. The additional ingredients of the salads were mediocre. However, Annie's itself is clean and neat and fresh-looking, though it serves very old-fashioned coffee shop food. And not really the worse for that. I ordered biscuits and gravy they were cold and tasted like flour my wife ordered two eggs and toast the waitress brought out two eggs and ham with hash browns. I know it was over an hour because I came in an hour and fifteen minutes before i had to work and I had to take it to go. It was delicious. But the coffee tasted like pepper so I asked them to take it off the bill. So I guess if you wanna eat here, get it to go like two hours before you actually need it? Been going here for years but noticed it is getting less and less busy. Tonight they they were about 30% full. The reason for the 1 start rating is for 2 reasons. First, when we were getting seated they were going to seat us at a table that every time the front door opens there is a freezing cold gust of wind we know this because we have been seated here almost every time before anyway we politely asked to be seated somewhere else because it was cold. At the same time a waitress walks by and says "it's cold everywhere". I couldn't believe she said that that. I was not happy. Anyway we get seated and then our next issue happens. We get our food ordered and we begin to wait during that time a couple of tables get seated and ordered there food which is no big deal except both tables with 4 people each get there food before we did and by looking at the food it was similar to what we ordered. We waited at least 45 minutes after ordering before we got of food. We typically order the same thing every time we go and it's maybe 25 minutes tops no how busy they are. The place was dead. Anyway the food was mediocre and it will be the last time we go here. If you want better food in this area of Topeka go across the parking lot to Mcfarlands Resturant. The food is much better at a great price and the staff is extra friendly. read more

Grabbed a late lunch here with a friend a couple of weeks ago. I was really disappointed with the service considering we were only one of two parties in the restaurant. We were seated without menus, then we had to ask for silverware. My Iced Tea was gross, extremely bitter as if the machine hadn't been cleaned in a while. My chicken sandwich was good, but nothing special, lacked seasoning and there where no condiments on the table. The cheese soup tasted like melted nacho cheese. Not that exciting. I was a frequent diner here when I lived in Topeka. The food was always good, the service was good, and the prices were nice. They make a mushroom sandwich on their marbled bread that is to die for, but as I'm allergic to mushrooms I just mooned over it most of the year. Once a year, however, I would take my allergy pills, drive to Annie's and have that delectable sandwich, then drive myself to the hospital immediately afterwards for a shot.
