We chose Blackbird because of the vegan, gluten-free, and healthier options. I enjoyed my yogurt parfait and warm GF brownie, and my partner appreciated his Greek salad and strawberry smoothie. We even came back a second day. You place your order at the counter, and the staff delivers the food to your table. The team was friendly and took the time to validate that some items were GF. A sandwich can be great if it comes out in 5 minutes, really good in 10, and still pretty good in 15--but after waiting 35 minutes, it's simply not worth it. I love checking out local coffee shops when i travel. I got an iced espresso and a breakfast panini w bacon, egg and Cheese. The place was super cute inside. The guy that took our order answered all our questions and helped us decide what to order. The bacon was perfectly cooked and a good portion. I went to meet some friends who frequent BB, it was fairly busy when I arrived. Blackbird is a small and quaint Bistro, they serve coffee, tea breakfast as well as cocktails and lunch/dinner food. The food and bakery items are fresh and tasty. On my visit today I ordered the Hot Matcha Latte with Sugar free vanilla, my friend ordered the brownie to go and it looked amazing! I think it's now my second or third visit to this Cafe while visiting in Topeka each and every time the food has just been on point breakfast wrap this morning The farmhouse rap and the chicken pesto sandwich with my dining partner. We did get a cinnamon roll which was outstanding as well is a beverage I just got a simple but delicious iced tea and my dining partner had a strawberry smoothie which she swore by!! I didn't have much expectations on account of the polarized reviews, but I picked this place as it had a meal and I was looking for a proper meal of sorts with my coffee since I had skipped lunch. And boy, was I blessed! The wrap was sublime! I loved every last morsel and the flavoring was perfect! The oat latte too hit all the spots, and the servers and the people behind the cash till were really friendly and genuine. I've been coming to Blackbird with my dad and sister for years. It's always pretty full, but never too crowded, making it a great place to come work or catch up with friends/family. This spot is not "trendy" like other coffee shops, but it is cozy, affordable, and most importantly -- delicious! The coffee is great and I love the rotating monthly specials! The baristas are friendly and helpful. I've also tried their chai latte, which was delicious. Be careful, the drinks are always piping hot! The food varies depending on the item. Do not sleep on the fresh quiche or cinnamon rolls! These items are made fresh every morning and go FAST (for a reason!) The toasted croissants and bagels are also pretty good and very filling, but the pastries for these sandwiches are a little underwhelming. The wraps are also pretty good, and I like that they come with fruit :) Overall, one of the best coffee shops in Topeka. It will always be a favorite of mine! read more

Sandwich was nice and hot , and potato salad was tasty. I did order cappuccino, small. Did seem like it had only half full, cappuccino was good though! In major need of caffeine and food before we made the trek back to Denver, Blackbird was on our radar to fulfill that need! We stopped here early morning and was stoked they were open since it'd right near the university. The only other people inside were cops, I'm talking city and state patrol so I felt safe! I ordered an Americano, two breakfast sandwiches and banana nut bread to go. The Americano was really weak and bitter, it took me about four hours to choke down entirely. The breakfast sandwiches on the other hand were awesome! I can't remember which one I got but it was a grilled croissant with feta and olives and it was delightful. $20 later, we were full and ready to hit the road but I wish the coffee held up to the reviews I read on the Yelp. read more

I'm in Topeka about once a month, and Blackbird is in my regular rotation of dinner places. The coffee here is seriously good. I had one of the best cappuccinos I've ever had here. They have all of the usual espresso drinks, plus frozen and blended ones, plus fruit smoothies (although I don't think they're made with fresh ingredients- I spotted one of those 'Jet Tea' canisters in their fridge,) and a great selection of bagged tea. They serve Harney and Sons Tea, which I'm a big fan of. The cinnamon flavor is amaaaazing. The menu is small, but everything I've tried has been wonderful. Last time I was in they had an African soup, with sweet potatoes and black eyed peas. It was excellent. Twice now I've gotten the cheese & tomato panini, ordered without the cream cheese that's listed on the menu, and it is dynamite. And big! Definitely enough for 2 people to split. You get your choice of side item with a panini, and I chose fresh fruit. You know how most places put 2 chunks of pineapple, a strawberry and maybe a smidge of melon in a bowl and call it a 'side of fruit'? Not Blackbird. My bowl was absolutely heaped up with dozens of fresh, delicious red seedless grapes. Such a nice treat. Their pastry case is small, it appeared to be mostly cookies inside, but everything looked delicious. This would be a great spot to stop at for a snack. The staff are young, probably Washburn University students I'm assuming, but very nice and helpful. The restaurant, and especially the bathroom, could be a bit fresher and brighter, a new coat of paint would help, but this is a very small complaint. Parking is easy, and there's a decent sized patio outside, although apparently smoking is allowed out there, so I stayed inside. Like many indie coffee places, there is local art displayed on the walls, available for purchase. Always nice to see. read more

I was dropping off UPS & saw this little gem next door. Being that I needed some caffeine and refresher... I was going to get a regular mocha latte, HOWEVER, when I found out they carried COCONUT syrup...... well then!!!! Mocha Coconut frappe with extra shot of espresso was my game! Subpar food. Oatmeal was completely raw, even after I complained and told them I can't eat it they didn't offer a refund. Smoothie tasted like pure sugar, even after adding water and the lox bagel was more of a lox salad on a bagel, barely any salmon. I'm tired of restaurants with fast food quality service asking for tip at the register after waiting in line for 10 minutes to place an order and 20 mins to get our food. Cute little coffee shop that is tucked into a grocery store plaza with a Starbucks. I stopped in one morning and had a caramel macchiato and a treat. I was impressed with the baked good both began and gluten free options. I grabbed a gluten free peanut butter chocolate chip cookies for later and it was a perfect afternoon treat. The cookie was not dry or hard like many gluten free treats. My macchiato was well made but I noticed that all the caramel was at the bottom so it needed to be stirred better. Inside is nothing special but there's plenty of tables and even a little space at the bar. The wifi of course is free. In the evening they also serve beer. read more

Blackbird has some of the best coffee and staff in Topeka. My fave is definitely the quiche on the weekends, and it's made by the hottest barista around. The co-owners, husband and wife, make an excellent team. The craft beer on tap is handpicked by the husband and much of the food and baked goods are handmade by the wife. watch her make a cake some day. It's pure magic. And it's all delicious. I definitely miss this gem now that I live somewhere where it's difficult to find a decent cup of coffee and good service to go with it. read more
