I desperately need to go to the loo. Striking out at the Spar grocery store, I walked a bit further on and spotted this cafe/ bakery, said a Hail Mary and walked into the store. Didn't spot any loo signs until reached the middle of the shop, past the initial counter and then spotted bathroom signs pointing towards upstairs. Loo facilities were clean and plentiful. So there are two purchasing counters. The first one is at the beginning and it's a quick serve/ takeaway kinda purchase counter. The second one is located towards the back, and it's the place to put in your dine in order. There's tons of seating options, and so it was nice to take a breather and grab a rest after standing up for so long watching the St Paddy's day parade. I didn't order anything to eat but did notice that you got crisps rather than chips with your food order and it mostly seemed to be a choice of sandwiches and rolls. Recommend the loo facilities! This centrally located place was buzzing with trade and its easy to see why. It offered a great 2 course lunch deal and a soft drink (€14.95). The deal was a carvery main meal: baked ham, turkey breast or roast beef with potatoes & vegetables - a dessert of choice with a hot or cold drink. Tea & coffee or the usual coke, orange, lemonade etc. All the drinks in the deal are dispensed from machines. Mains food choices extended to batter fried cod, chicken curry and other meals. I had roast ham & roast beef without gravy, Yorkshire pud, mashed potatoes and cabbage. I don't like gravy. Never have. I was offered more vegetable choices but I said no thanks. The taste of all the food was 4 star, well cooked, darn good, fresh food and great portions. I wasn't able to finish my main. The mashed potato was ace too - balls of flour was the old description in greengrocers - Dublin Queen potatoes were dry & floury, perfect for mash and chips. If I'd change anything here the battered fish should be cooked to order - had this been so I would have chosen it. The meringue desserts were stunningly good too. The food is served up a bit like canteen food, staff were under pressure to keep the tables clear and clean and the seating isn't luxurious. The sauces - tomato, brown, mustard etc are all in those awful plastic sachets and are the cheaper end so 1 star for this. All in all a pretty fair deal in a city where food prices, to put it kindly, can be the crazy side of over the top and hotel prices would make Dick Turpin blush. read more

There's very little to differentiate the sit-down offering inside from other cafeteria-style eateries in the city centre. Coffee and tea, check. Dry sandwiches with a scraping of butter, check. But there's a few lovely faces behind the front counter who say hello as you walk in, and the price here for a pan of brown or bloomer are on par with the grocery shops in the area but fresher by far. A bag of five fresh scones sets you back about €2.50,I always leave two out and freeze the rest. Mmm. So, artisan bakers the good folk at Ann's are not, but a fast dip in can net you a few sugary favourites made fresh... how terrible is that? read more

Ann's Bakery isn't one of my favourites. There's something about the decadent cakes, sealed loaves and cafeteria that irks me. The whole decoration and presentation lacks sophistication, if you ask me. There's nothing wrong with the quality of the food. I just miss the added thrills that other bakeries employ to entice customers. Here's an example of what to expect when you come to Ann's. The cake fridge is filled with sickly sweet, white icing cakes. One of the cakes even had a scanned photograph of a baby on it. I later saw this service advertised in the window. The back section of the bakery has a hot food counter where you order fast food style. There are seats upstairs and downstairs and a whole lot of screaming children. Overall, coming to Ann's feels like eating in a school canteen. read more

Usually overcrowded and completely overpriced. It's hard to get a seat once you've purchased your food. And by the time you do get a seat, the food you've paid too much for is already cold. A friend and I went here and each had a fairly small plated breakfast and with drinks out total was nearly €40. Not at all worth the price for the cafeteria style food, service and seating. Ann's does have a wide variety of baked goods for takeaway, however...and they are pretty tasty. So skip the cafeteria, grab a cake for takeaway and you should be satisfied. read more

Came here for breakfast. Chose their hefty breakfast option for 4 breakfast options plus toast. Had beans, ham, egg, and sausage. The sausage was real good. The food may be in the greasier side, but for the price and portions, it was worth it. Good location and plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs. I think everyone will agree that the cafe seating part sucks, it reminds me of Kylemore on O'Connell Street *Shudder* which every time I am dragged in there I come out feeling like a need a good chemical shower (The germs, not the germs!) The bakery part is wonderful though, the staff all seem like they are good friends with each other giving it that good-bit-of-craic friendly atmosphere. The cakes, bread and other delicacies are so fresh and calling out from the behind the counter (yes that means you reading this). They do have a meal part down the back but it looks fairly bland and it's never tempted me to sit down and have a lunch so I'm not too impressed with that one. Hence not the full 5 stars vote. I have gotten a few birthday cakes in there now at this stage, obviously not for myself (insert image of me sitting alone singing happy birthday sniff sniff) and all of them have been nothing but decadent and delicious (the calories however are a different story but until mankind invents a fat free, no sugar and full of vitamins that doesn't taste like seawater mixed with rubber. I think I'll stick with this place thank you very much). Price is amazing too and they often do 3 cream cakes for a fiver deal which is great to grab to sweeten everyone in the office. Also a fantastic place to get that extra special quirky cake for that oh so special occasion (like a ball and chain wedding cake, hey it's just an idea) Would be even better if they took a wrecking ball to the decor and set it up as a proper old fashioned bakery because let's face it, with the introduction of the frozen dessert era, they are a dying breed. read more

Line up, select pastry or some variation of hot meat & potato, select drink, shuffle towards counter balancing said sustenance on greasy tray, dash towards free table, now maddened by the wafting aromas of your lunch and the fear that you might miss the one free table, that you might, maybe, have to go upstairs. Where the stairs are steep and your drink will fall over and your food will be nearly cold. Ok so that might be a little bit dramatic, but that was my last visit to the lovely Ann's Bakery. At the end of the day, it does exactly what it says on the tin. The food is there ready and waiting for ya, the staff are just a little bit jaded by it all, and there are loads of tables upstairs, but the grannies have control of the ones downstairs and you ain't gettin near them bud! Seriously though, it's a grand spot if you're just after something quick, cheap and cheerful. And if you're a pastry fan, well good luck in choosing, as they have a whole section dedicated to the creamy, the jammy, the crispy and the sugary. read more

If you treat Anne's like a bakery where you go to get some fresh bread and cakes it's a pretty nice place. The cafeteria-style cafe part though is best avoided. It's cold and lacks atmosphere and it's also pretty loud so definitely not a place to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee and a chat. Never mind the fact that the coffee here is pretty bad as well... very weak and tasteless. But the staff are friendly, their cakes and pastries are nice and if you order it in advance you can get a very nice pavlova here. read more

It's a prime location, a great name and it's baking cakes like it ought but they're missing that Granny-ish feeling. They need floral wallpaper and bent wood chairs. They need it to be rainy and miserable outside and cosy within. They need to turn the heating up to 11. They need to turn off that racket. They need to spit-wash the clientele on the way out the door. I think it was a misstep - this McDonalds-like canteen corridor type of thing, what they should've done was make the architect watch Mrs. Doubtfire a few times, or for that matter as many times as it takes. Weirdly enough I had never been in Ann's Bakery before. I wanted tea, cake and a place to read. Their cakes did look particularly nice and I chose a nice fresh banoffee, tea and a bottle of water, which I think came to about 8 euro. Downstairs was pretty packed and so I went upstairs to sit by the window and look out onto Henry Street. It isn't really a comfy place to sit and read, as its mostly plastic chairs and tables. A radio station was piped in and was at the time playing talk radio, which I just found annoying. I've no quarrel with the food, but I did feel that if I was going to pay that much for tea and cake I really would expect a more comfortable and relaxing experience. read more

I used to love this place, but I've gone off it a little since they did it up a few years back. Before, it was like a canteen or something - in the back they did old school proper dinners like roast chicken with spuds and veg and chips with whatever you wanted thrown on top. Now, it's all clean and shiny, and they have set prices for set things - you can't really mix and match like you used to. It's just got a bit fussy and proper, and the lack of it before was here it had its charm. The bakery at the front is still quite similar - yummy cakes like éclairs and breads freshly baked. I'm quite annoyed by this rating because this place has a few things going for it: - Central location (1 min walk from the Spire); - Nice website (cool design and prices displayed); - Homemade food (as it claims); - Family owned business (type of thing that should totally be encouraged); - Great big open space with 2 floors and glass doors; - Deals such as 2 course meal with drink for about 15€ and food to go for a fiver PLUS all day breakfast. As it seemed like a pretty good informal and cheap place I stopped by. Being so central, you can expect the place to be crowded with long lines and loud noise levels - and that is exactly what you get. Getting in I saw a shelf with a few individually boxed cakes with too much cream for my taste. Lots of people in trackies with small kids are the main clientele and it can be difficult to get a table. In fairness the place is kept clean but I didn't feel pleased when I was trying to enjoy my drink and my nostrils got invaded by some cleaning product that really put me off eating anything... My friend got a sandwich that was bland but my mocha was very bad. Looked not so good and tasted really not so good neither so I didn't drink half of the cup. Also with so much noise around, this is not a nice place to have a conversation with a friend, it is more a grab-your-item-and-leave-in-5-minutes type of venue. I would give it a go again though, maybe sitting upstairs and trying the food or some baked goods. IT HAS to be good. Hopefully then, they could try to use some nice herbal air freshener instead of a toxic cleaning product. read more

Stopped in for a quick coffee-an-a-bun during Christmas shopping, really just based on my memories of 20 years ago when Ann's was one of the best places in the city to do so. unsurprisingly it has changed a lot in 20 years, it is no longer the small, slightly grotty but amazing little bakery, it now has more the feel of the canteen you get in places like Ikea, a little soulless over all but still has a tremendous array of fresh pastries and cakes. Deffo stop in for some takeaway goodies, try to avoid staying for coffee or worse yet, a meal. read more

Great to see Ann's hot bread shop still going after all these years. I remember eating cream cakes here as a kid that lightyear ago! A lot of yummy temptations around. You first have to sneak by the numerous array of delightful cakes and then try to blank the other lot in the fridges when paying. It doesn't get my full vote as it still has the old dear smell when you first walk in but it goes after the nice waft of dinner delights that awaits. I had a very tasty beef pie with all the trimmings. Good price and definitely better for you rather than a micky d's after a hard days shopping. The inside has been done up since the last time I was there, so looks ok and a lot of friendly folk about. In Dublin for a business trip, I don't want the massive breakfast from the hotel so I decided to go on Mary's street to look for a cafe early morning and I end up in this fancy cafe! That's was not a bad idea at all! They do some massive muffins and they look to be homemade (he took it from the baking tray... They might have just warm it in it but anyway it look like it was homemade) I have also order a latte. I can say that the muffin was really good! It was a blueberry muffin, I could not see to much blueberry on it but the muffin in general was pretty good The latte... Honestly, I should have just wait to be in the office and get it from the machine because I did not really like it! I went back the next day for the muffin again but they did not have any which is a shame! So I had a scone with chocolate chips! Not bad decision look less greasy than the muffin and it full me up for the morning so I can go back there again for it. That's only what I can comment on, they get the 3 stars because of the muffins not available and the latte that could really be better. they do savoury food also and cheap lunch menu so maybe to try one day and if I do I will review this and/or confirm if they should have more stars read more

This place looks like a quaint little bakery on the outside with a few seats at the door, once you get in and see behind the counter and downstairs it can probably hold about 100 people. Anyway, we were starvin and wanted breakfast and you could have 8 items, toast and tea for €8.95 much to my boyfriends excitement. We went to the counter where all the food was sitting pre cooked and it was piled into our plates then put into an oven to re-heat. The whole time at the counter the only thing I was paying attention to were the cakes. They are absolutely massive the chocolate eclairs are easily 20+cm long and thick! I'm tempted to buy one as I leave... Anyway, we sat downstairs as it was busy with our food. The lady behind the counter places it on my tray and I scorch my hand off as I balance the tray and pot of tea as I try to manoeuvre down the stairs. The food itself was good enough, the sausages were really nice the toast was good too. I'd just be happier if I'd had known what to expect before going in, not sure if I'd go back for breakfast but maybe for a cake. read more

Went here yesterday for lunch. I had a full irish breakfast which was great. But the selection of food was amazing. Breakfast lunch and dinner all available all day. Though it's more like a canteen than a cafe, this is a nice, friendly place to stop in if you're shopping on Henry Street. The food's not high cuisine - greasy fries, lasagne, roast chicken, soup and sandwiches etc - but it's all tasty and the portions are decent. There's a nice selection of cakes, which are baked on the premises, as the name would suggest. They do birthday cakes and so on too. read more

I worked 3 years ago. The restaurant was the top one spot where I started working in dublin. Thanks menager Michael which is a fantastic man in my opinion, the same as the rest of employees which taught me many things, as well as the English.:) I worked there 8 - 9 months and willingly I would come back to see these nice people then again.. I have to say that the food is delicious but they seem to change the prices every time i go in. Its 2. 50 euro per scoop of potato which is a little pricey. Im a veggie so i normally get extra potatoes. At first when i started coming to Anns Bakery everything was included on my plate, now i pay for my extras. My sons meal is also gone up in price. I understand you get what you pay for but constantly changing the prices is a bit to much. I have since tried other eatries that KEEP the same prices. read more

i used to love anns cafe until the changed the decor a few years back. the whole feel of the place changed when the changed the docor to red and yellow, put me right off the place! but in saying that, the food is nice and it isnt too expensive and you can get small plates for the kiddies. read more

I've eaten here a few times and while the food is ok, the pastries and cakes are excellent. So this was the first place I thought of to do the cake when I was organising a surprise birthday party for my husband in the The Church venue (two minutes across the road from Ann's Bakery). I rang and asked them if I paid in full upfront, could they drop the cake across the road to The Church, as I live in Meath, and wouldn't be in Dublin in time to collect the cake and get it to the Venue. I just kept being told "sorry love, we don't have a delivery service". When I re-explained my situation, again mentioned how it was only across the road, and asked if they would be willing to help me out given my circumstances, even if I paid extra, I still got "sorry love, we don't have a delivery service". Very disappointed in the complete lack of customer service or willingness to think (just a little) outside the box. read more
