When I think of beef stew, I think of my mom's homemade version. So one of the things I was most looking forward to in Ireland was trying authentic Irish stew. Our first meal in Dublin was at The Old Mill Restaurant, right in the heart of Temple Bar. It's been serving traditional Irish fare since the 1980s and has become a favorite stop for both locals and visitors looking for classic comfort food. After about a 20-minute wait, we were seated in the warm, inviting dining room. Susan ordered the mussels, one of her favorites, while I went with the Traditional Irish Stew and my daughter chose the Braised Beef & Guinness Stew. Both were exactly what we hoped for: hearty, flavorful, and perfect after a day of sightseeing. I finally understood why the Guinness stew had such a rich, dark color, and I have to admit, I came home a big fan of Irish stew. We finished with the Homemade Bread & Butter Pudding topped with fresh cream and custard, a comforting dessert that was the perfect ending to the meal. Service, atmosphere, value, and food were all five out of five. We also enjoyed chatting with the floor manager, whose pride in the restaurant and his team was obvious. Stopped in for dinner... after looking at the menu, we ordered the following items: - Duo of Freshly Steamed Mussels & a bowl of Creamy Seafood Chowder - breaded warm goats cheese & walnut salad - traditional Irish stew - pan fried bangers & mash Overall, the food was decent, but nothing to write home about. The mash was too thick and chunky, the bangers were bit overcooked. The mussels was disappointing, seafood chowder was ok. The restaurant is located on the second floor. We made a reservation, but was asked to wait while they cleaned up the table. Unfortunately, the table they wanted to seat us, the folks decided to have a long after dinner conversation, thus we ended up waiting longer than expected. Hard to find as we passed it & realized it's upstairs! Small single room w/ a standard collection of wall art / signs. Asked to be re-sat & they were happy to let us choose. We asked about the soup flavor & they offered a taste and brought out a huge sample boat. Super cool. I got the cottage pie lunch portion, which is more than I could barely eat. It came with a boat of the sauce /and gravy and meat. Wife got the fish and chips... The fillet was longer than the plate and it came with a mountain of fries, both delicious. Daughter got the creamy vegetable soup and chips. She loved it but couldn't even finish half. If you're in the area, The Old Mill Restaurant should be on your list. From the traditional decor to the delicious food, this seems to be a staple spot for an authentic Irish dining experience. Thankfully, when I arrived around 1, one table happened to be opened so no wait for me. A long queue did start soon after though so just be prepared for some wait depending on when you arrive. I ordered the Seafood Chowder and the Guinness Stew. Both were very tasty! The Seafood Chowder had a good amount of seafood and the flavor was hearty but not overly heavy. Same applies to the Guinness Stew. Very hearty with lots of beef chunks but I didn't feel too heavy after eating it. The stew is definitely much different in terms of flavor and the richness (the stew was a lot more rich) but having the contrast of both dishes was ideal. To top it off, dipping the provided soda bread in each of the dishes was an added bonus. The service is very prompt and the staff are friendly. There's a decent amount of tables so turnover shouldn't be too long for those waiting in the queue. Will definitely be back on my next visit to Dublin to try the other dishes! read more

Like many have mentioned, the restaurant targeting towards tourists. I had the seafood chowder. The good: tons of seafood; the meh: salty and not very creamy, also not the freshest seafood chowder I've had. The fish and chips are far, I mean far below average. The fish isn't fresh and the peas are brown instead of green, eww. Service is average. Tips are anticipated unlike other local restaurants. Tiny, old, full of character restaurant on the second floor of a building in Temple Bar. They turn and burn here so don't be dissuaded by a line up the stairs. They told us a 10-minute wait and it was just that. Service is quick and there are waiters buzzing around tending to your needs. A pint of the mother's milk (Guinness) was calling our names. And for my son's first pint in Ireland, he split the G on his first try. IYKYK Meat pie was piping hot! Good sized portion and the veggies were cooked perfectly, a gravy that was delicious, and a topping of mashed potatoes which were perfect. Well done. Son had fish and chips. I suppose this place used to be good. There was a long line the day before so word of mouth from before it's still carrying them but it was awful! The servers are just rude, period. We ordered a meal to share with an appetizer and waited for much longer than a woman that walked in 10 minutes later. Instead of bringing the appetizer like.... well, an appetizer, they brought it with the fish and chips. Cold, soggy, gross fish and chips. The lady next to me bumped the table getting up and knocked my wine over. No one would clean it but finally I did get some napkins. Going to the bathroom was insane. Staff chatting in the corridor not moving so one could pass. Then, to top. It off, we were overcharged 20 euros. We waited a long time for the bill and needed to get to a concert. Gave her the card. What a nightmare. I literally was crying at the table then overcharged 50 percent. He even left the woman a gratuity which I really really resent. Think twice. I've seen this before. Some places are great for a while then the start living off their reputation and think it will last forever. It won't. It will fade quickly. Too many other places to go. We were here 8 years ago...accidentally found it then and the same now as we couldn't remember the name...but we have told everyone we know about our experience in 2017, it was so good! We fell in love with the ambiance and the staff! Last time we all had the fish and chips, vegetable soup, shepherds pie, beef and Guinness stew, drinks (yes...guinness) and desserts. All were so amazing we came here three times! Oh! They had a delish potato stew last time....all over Ireland the potatoe stew seems to have been replaced with potato and leek puree since COVID 19. Our first dinner in Dublin, the reviews and photos looked amazing was the reason of choosing this place. There was queue when arriving however it was worth the wait as it was small space upstairs. They had all the traditional Irish cuisine including a FULL Flour Free Menu! We had the Famous Irish Lamb Shank and Traditional Irish Stew. They are absolutely delicious and taste buds was more than happy. It felt like pure enjoy eating them. The lamb shank was melting like butter and mind you Irish butter is freaking amazing. My first meal in Dublin. I made a reservation for 5 pm but it wasn't necessary. The restaurant was completely full though at 6 pm when I left. I ordered the Guiness beef stew, which was very tasty. The beef had flavor and the vegetables weren't overcooked. It came with mashed potatoes (or fries) and brown bread and butter. I also got apple crumble which was more like an apple pie and it came with lovely cream and a yellow custard sauce. It was delicious, not as sweet as the ones at home. The staff were all very nice. The Old Mill restaurant is in the crowded and touristy Temple Bar section of Dublin. Typically I try to avoid areas like this for meals and general shopping, since you always get the feeling you're being gouged or not getting the experience you otherwise think you could elsewhere. The Old Mill restaurant is definitely the exception in this case. We waited on a line going down a staircase for around 40 minutes to get in, but the staff were nice enough to give us menus and serve us drinks while we waited. Once we were seated, we got the coddle and lamb shank for our meal. Coddle is definitely a more unique Irish flavor you wouldn't see elsewhere and had some good meaty flavor to it. The lamb shank was an absolute star to me. Served on the bone and so tender that it falls off the bone a fork, served with a side of mashed potatoes and veggies. We also had the death by chocolate cake for dessert which was very rich and heavy on chocolate, so the scoop of vanilla ice cream definitely helps break it up. The only slightly irritation is them pointing out and asking for a tip afterwards. So far, the other restaurants I've gone to on this trip haven't asked, tapped my card, and off we went. So, you have to wonder if that was primarily due to the restaurant's location in the touristy district. Despite this, I would certainly recommend the the Old Mill and will certainly be making a return should I ever return to Dublin. read more

I attempted to go for dinner at the Old Mill on my first night in Dublin but the wait was over an hour when I arrived. I have to say, the service while waiting in line was pretty impressive. There was a guy asking people if they wanted drinks while waiting and made sure to update us on table availability while we waited. When I went back the next night it was even busier than the previous evening due to a couple of very large groups. Again, service was amazing despite the crazy amount of people. I had to wait a few minutes after my reservation time but it was completely fine as I had already looked at a menu in line so I ordered as soon as I sat down. I opted for the seafood chowder and mussels combo - exactly what I was craving! I also started with a pint of Guinness. My food arrived after a very reasonable wait and let me tell you.... it was so good! The chowder was packed with all types of seafood and perfectly seasoned. The mussels were not the best in terms of size, as they were kind of small but cooked well. The broth was exceptional and had some beautiful brown bread on the side to dip in and soak up all that deliciousness. As mentioned, the restaurant was packed so it was pretty noisy but not overwhelming. The staff did an amazing job of manœuvering tables and people to accommodate different size groups and were incredibly efficient at clearing and cleaning tables as people left. There is a line that goes up the stairs with folks waiting for a table. Luckily we only had about a 10 minute wait, but by the time we were seated the line went down the stairs and out of the door. What a charming spot in the Temple Bar area! Due to the location, I was afraid it would be a tourist trap, but honestly it was fabulous. We came in looking for traditional Irish food and landed on the Cottage Pie (like a Shepherd's Pie but with beef instead of lamb). Split between two hungry adults, this was more than enough! Second time in Dublin and we've avoided Temple Bar area restaurants and pubs prior bc it's a touristy area and prices are higher. However, I really wanted shepherds pie and they received rave reviews. Headed upstairs to the restaurant and we were immediately seated. We each ordered shepherds pie. It arrived hot and plentiful. We probably could have split 1 but as greedy Americans, we each had our own. It was very good. The sauce was more like a dark and thick gravy. I make shepherds pie at home with carrots and peas with whipped potato topper and love mine and so in comparing mine versus Old Mills, I actually like mine better. Theirs had an addl vege I wasn't expecting and now don't recall what it was. I would still recommend Old Mills. While seated, we had the pleasure of chatting w/2 sets of patrons, both American. It's fascinating how friendly Americans are when out of the country but not so much when at home. We ordered the Braised Beef & Guinness Stew with a side of mashed potatoes, the Dubliner Grilled Beef Burger that comes with a pepper gravy that I still have dreams about, so so good if you, like me, love pepper! This was our first dining experience in Dublin, and it was exceptional. The food - Bangers and mash, Guineas beef stew and lamb stew with brown bread!!! Nice to taste off each other's plates so delicious!!! The service was amazing and friendly staff. I had take a fall while crossing the na' penny bridge and was bleeding from both palms and knee, the staff helped me clean the cuts and bandage them.
