I highly recommend Anna's Driving School instructor Rita Flanagan. On August 19, 2023 I had two strokes which left me partially disabled with limited use of my right arm and hand about four months ago my doctor recommended to me that she felt I should consider driving again and wrote me a prescription to attend a driving/cognitive "evaluation course to learn how to drive with adaptive controls. When I met Rita for the first time, she made me feel so welcome and comfortable and confident with learning how to drive a vehicle safely with adaptive controls and after several lessons with Rita, she felt confident that I could safely drive a vehicle and pass the DMV driving with adapter controls installed on my cars. On June 5, 2025 I was given an appointment date with the DMV for a driving test with an examiner and I had a successful outcome I " PASSED" the driving test not driving a vehicle for one year and 10 months.The knowledge and experience that Rita help develop within myself allowed me to pass this driving test and I made one mistake. I turned too wide when departing the DMV parking lot and I got dinged for that but the DMV examiner wrote on his supplemental driving performance evaluation score sheet I am a very safe driver thank you so much, Rita you are an amazing, professional, and caring, helpful instructor. Ann's Driving School - DMV examiner evaluation report. - Driving Schools Near Me - San Francisco, California

On the website they make it seem like you can choose your instructor but that's not the case. You reach with your information and then random people text you. It was jarring. My instructor was good during the lesson but on 3 occasions tried to reschedule the day before, sometimes the day of, and it wasn't for emergencies. They also told me that most people master how to turn on the first lesson despite this being my second lesson, which hurt my confidence (I think this instructor was socially awkward) I also had a different instructor who completely forgot about our appointment and then when I tried to reschedule it they claimed I needed to pay them a "cancelation fee" over venmo. There is nothing like that on the site and I found that weird. I'm not naming any names because I don't want anyone specifically in trouble, I think most people have had good experiences with Ann's and these specific instructors. Your mileage may vary. As an adult 27 year old learning to drive for the first time in my life, I was so intimidated by cars and the fear of driivng on the open road. However after taking lessons with Tiarra and Ann's Driving School, I am not only a licensed driver but have become someone who is confident enough behind the wheel to enjoy taking the car out for a drive! I cannot say enough good things about Tiarra, she is beyond what I could have asked for in a great driving instructor. She was incredibly patient with me and provided endless support when I was unconfident in my ability to drive. But what I think made her such a great instructor was her ability to make me feel safe enough to make mistakes and to LEARN from them. I can't say I was a perfect driver, but I always felt like I was safe to try the new things that Tiarra was telling me to do, knowing she was watching and providing feedback. She was constantly checking in on how I felt while driving, especially after driving on a faster road or new place. I am not afraid to admit I failed my first behind the wheel test, because when I did pass on my second attempt I knew the habits I built made me a safe and attentive driver. As an anxious adult in their late twenties who previously had a chaotic driving instructor, I was hesitant to get behind the wheel again. I cannot recommend a better driving instructor than Tiarra. Constantly checking in, challenging when necessary, and patient amongst all my anxieties (driving in the rain, city driving, the test itself) was the best I could have asked for. She's a wonderful person in addition so I never dreaded any lessons either. Trust that with an instructor like her you will learn how to be comfortable with your mistakes and continue driving regardless. Lessons were an opportunity to get back into driving. The instructor suggested weekly lessons at 1hr 45 minutes. Lessons are expensive and when asking how many lessons the instructor thought I needed she replied that it was up to me. Generally speaking lessons were basic city street driving. Occasionally she would push to take on something more challenging and in one lesson nearly had 2 accidents because I couldn't understand what she was talking about. In one incident she slammed on the breaks saying I didn't see the car in front had stopped at the same time she told me to make a lane change. That sudden stop triggered a pain in my neck and I canceled my following lesson to rest. After that the instructor stopped lessons all together commenting that everyone responds to things differently. In addition, the instructor was very talkative. I didn't mind that too much except when she kept asking about my personal life. Some comments she would share with me were how she knew some cultures made driving for women uncomfortable or she would ask about my siblings, what they did for a living, things that didn't pertain to lessons and it felt like she was digging for information. If the school is meant to be sensitive to learners then keeping the personal questions to themselves can be a good idea. Not everyone wants to share their personal life to strangers. read more

I took a few lessons with Arturo, with the goal of passing the test but also getting comfortable driving within SF (I'm a recent transplant here). I have some driving experience, though very little in the US, and none in SF. From the onset, it was clear that Arturo was very experienced with driving as well as with SF itself. He was able to effectively instruct me on how to handle the unpredictability of city traffic, all whilst supplying a near constant stream of interesting facts and tidbits about the city. I took 9 lessons with Tiarra, her before taking my drive test, and passing! Tiarra is a phenomenal instructor and mentor. While knowing the rules is a big part of driving, it isn't enough; you have to also feel comfortable, confident, and safe behind the wheel. Tiarra not only taught me the technicalities and nuances of driving in San Francisco/ Daly City, she also and helped me develop an ease and confidence behind the wheel. I absolutely love her teaching style! She doesn't overwhelm you with information, rules, and instructions on how to drive, up front. Rather, she will attentively, let you do your thing behind the wheel and point out how to do certain things better, differently, or more safely, after she notices something. This way, you experience how to do the thing the "not-so-great" way, and then with Tiarra's thorough (example-filled) explanation, learn WHY your maneuver wasn't ideal, and do the right thing the next time you are in a similar situation. Tiarra is also extremely patient. She asked me to pull over and back the car up in a straight line... and I did anything but that :). She told me, "we're going to practice." And guess what... we practiced till I was damn-near perfect! Over and over again, she had me pull over at various curbs and back up, until she felt I was comfortable! Tiarra's constant words of encouragement, "you're doing great sweety", "you've got this", "its ok, you're doing great", "good job" helped me feel safe to make mistakes and learn + grow from them. They played a major feeling cool as a cucumber behind the wheel and recover quickly from any slip-ups I had while learning. Tiarra is a really inspiring and funny woman. I would leave my lessons, abs aching and feeling ready to take on the world! Her kindness created a very positive learning environment. While I have taken lessons in the past (~5 years ago), and attempted to take the test in the east bay... none of those paid off as much as my lessons with Tiarra. I'm not a big Yelper but I am so grateful to have had Tiarra as an instructor that I want to shout it from the rooftops. I grew up in SF and never learned to drive. There were lots of things I wasn't sure that I could do behind the wheel, but Tanya set me up so that I was doing them before I even realized it. I reached out the school via email and heard back very quickly, which was great. If you are looking for true "fearless" driving lesson, Eugenia would be your best instructor, I worked with her for 4 lessons then I passed DMV behind the wheel test with just 3 minor errors, without her professional training, I don't think I can make it ! She's very friendly and personable, she never gives you harsh correction, you don't have to worry about your driving skill as she will help you to build up your confidence by customizing your lesson and polishing your skill in the following lessons. Ricky was literally the best driving instructor EVER, I've had at least 2 instructors before him at other locations that just weren't the best. But Ricky got me over my fear of freeways, was patient with me while teaching me how to parallel park, and was all around a chill guy. This is the second time around working with Ann's Driving school to get my high school teen time behind the wheel to prepare her for taking the driving test. The first time she took all the lessons and then was supposed to drive more hours on her own. She was then had to leave the country so did not get a chance to go take the driving test. Once she came back home I signed her up again to take driving lessons. So far in several months she has only been able to secure one lesson. This of course if not all the school's fault. The teacher has very limited availabilities and too much time goes in-between each lesson so it's like starting all over again. This is a waste of time and money. Each lesson is not cheap at $195.00 per lesson. I have reached out to the owner Judy to see if there is another option or if she will refund the one lesson. read more

I would say first best thing that happened in my learning curve was coming in contact with the school. Such friendly and precise approach is really rare now a days. The second best thing that happened was getting Richard as an instructor. I had a complicated situation regarding driving as I drove before in India (left side traffic), so it felt very awkward to dive on SF roads. Richard is a very picky person with a great sense of humor. His perfectionist attitude helped me in a tremendous level to make every stop, every turn perfect. As a result, I passed the road test couple of weeks ago with 3 minor errors. Other than the test, I feel really confident about driving on busy roads. I really appreciate his art of teaching things. I have been driving in Zimbabwe before but I was nervous about taking the exam in California (In Zimbabwe we drive on the left side of the road.) He picked me up from home, was flexible on timing before my exam, arrived on time for appointments and gave me lots of useful tips and hints to prepare me for my test and driving after getting my license. I am 36 and started taking driving lessons 3 years ago. I failed the driving test 3 times and put this goal aside. I thought perhaps driving was not the thing I was capable of. Until 2 months ago I found Ann's Driving School on Yelp. I was curious whether this highly rated school could ready make a difference. And after 5 lessons with Ann's, I passed. I had Chris as my instructor. Let me tell you - not all instructors are the same, and good instructors do matter! At this point you know I will say Chris is the best. I have had 3 instructors, and I could sense how Chris's teaching method was so much more effective than the others. To learn how to drive is not about having someone constantly telling you every single thing you need to do, in that case you will become overly dependent on your instructor. Even after months of class you will feel limited progress. Chris on the other hand helped me understand what I was doing with clear explanation, and most importantly gave me room to make my own decisions. Chris's lessons were very well-thought-out. When he noticed I could manage certain tasks, he always quickly added a layer of challenge. I felt I advanced so much after every lesson. That could only happen with his being observant and thoughtful. On the day of testing, I was nervous but not as nervous as I have been years ago. Before I was so worried about the examiner noticing the mistakes I would make. This time I was just ready to show off what I have learnt. read more

Christopher is a wonderful instructor. I have never driven a car and I have been scared of driving, especially freeways. He is very patient and encouraging. Even when I make mistakes, he doesn't ask me why I made the mistake or he doesn't get impatient like the other instructors I have experienced in other schools. He gives me constructive feedback on what I should improve and nothing negative. He is not only a patient and great instructor, but also funny so he puts me at ease. When I called Ann's Driving School I was told the soonest available lesson was three weeks later with Richard. He doesn't teach all you need to know to pass the test, and he is racist (against white and non-Chinese) and sexist (against women) in his behavior and conversations while driving. He canceled my driving lessons with less than days notice for nonsense, disrespectful reasons. Also while trying to take the test his buddies were rocking the car back and forth and bothering me (maybe thinking women like it) even though I was completely covered in clothes. read more
