Nice local spot for fresh flowers and produce. The salad bar is a good alternative for the mid day lunch too.

The staff here was absolutely friendly but food-wise, I thought the selection was pretty minimal , Bare Bones and above all a bit overpriced which kind of disappointed my experience here. Overall, this place has a variety of many things from vegan options for my wife to a variety of cold drinks to go. Check out lines move by pretty fast as well. This place featured plenty of parking as well. Overall, I thought this was an average grocery store to check out.

Honestly, I thought that was just the standard for suburban grocery stores around here. I hadn't even heard of Sunset Foods until a TV commercial popped up the other night. Back in NY, I practically lived at Uncle Giuseppe's, and I've been majorly missing that high-end, Italian-market vibe. The commercial looked legit, so this past Saturday, I figured why not make the drive up to Highland Park and check it out. The second I pulled up, it just felt different. I got a super warm greeting walking in, but what really sold me was this guy outside grilling hot dogs right by the entrance. Honestly, just catching that smell in the weekend air instantly took me back to summers on Long Island. The store itself has a great vibe, really clean and upscale. I hit the cheese section first because the gourmet selection is massive. A really nice staff member saw me looking a bit overwhelmed and helped me pick out a few incredible cheeses. Then I hit the bakery and deli, totally overloading my basket with random finds, including a massive brownie that looked insane, and some awesome cured meats. But the real test was the meat and seafood counter. At Jewel, half the time the meat looks like it's turning brown under the plastic wrap. Sunset is the exact opposite. Everything looked fresh and bright. They were running a sale on salmon, and I picked up a filet that was delicious. Yeah, the register total was definitely higher than what I'd pay at Jewel, but the quality difference is night and day. You get what you pay for. So glad I found this place, it's the closest thing to home I've found yet.

The store is laid out like most Jewels, with some minor differences like the placement of the deli counter. So, for the most part it is easy to find the items you need. It also either appears are if they have more help on the floor, or the ones there are more attentive. I had two questions about where things were located and was able to find a helpful store associate in minutes. Like other Jewels, they tend to be more expensive than other grocers of the same caliber. I think all of the Jewels can learn a lesson from Aldi.

As soon as I walked in, the store felt dated, from the lighting and décor to the overall atmosphere. I came to take advantage of a $7 off $7 purchase promotion Jewel offered to celebrate the Bears' win over the Green Bay Packers on January 10, 2026. The promotion was supposed to be redeemed with a digital coupon between January 12 and 16. I have been part of their loyalty program for a while, and this was my first time clipping one of their digital coupons on my desktop. When I checked out at the self-checkout, the $7 discount did not apply, even after I entered my phone number and confirmed I was connected to my Jewel loyalty account. The staff overseeing the area kept asking to see the coupon on my phone app. I did not realize I also had to download their app, since clipping the digital coupon on a computer is all that is required with Mariano's. The staff was not particularly friendly, but he did manually take $7 off this time.  I thanked him for his help and mentioned the convenience of Mariano's system, fully expecting the response of "we are not Mariano's," and that was exactly what I got. Haha. That is also why Jewel is not my primary grocery store anymore. Unfortunately, the Bears lost their following game on January 18 and ended the season abruptly, so I will not need to worry about redeeming another Jewel digital coupon anytime soon.

After hitching a ride with my neighbor to try some seafood soup another neighbor of ours recommended I was blown away. The freshly prepared food is actually fresh and tastes really good. I don't get everything from here, but I do love their bakery and deli. I always like to see the different items they have, and I really like that they stock bakery items from local bakeries. I love that they have Do-rite donuts ($2.39 each) daily and that no matter what time I stop in, the donuts are always soft and fresh. They do usually have a few gluten-free on hand too. They also have items from their own bakery such as danishes, muffins, scones (from Hot Cakes Bakery in Northbrook) and croissants, etc. I get the croissants often and they are really good. The bagels are also another reason I stop in. I believe they are from 'Once Upon a Bagel' bagel shop. They are soft and fluffy and fresh daily for $1.25. They carry the standard flavors - Plain, Wheat, Egg, Everything, Cinnamon Raisin, Chocolate Chip, Sesame, Poppy, Pumpernickel, Corn Rye and Onion. They also have bialys which are also great. They have cheesecake slices from the Cheesecake Factory and various Palermo bakery cake slices and desserts. I've seen them stock things from other bakeries such as the Baking Institute, Carol's Cookies, Leonard's Bakery, Sweet Thing Bake Shop, Killer Brownie and others that I can't remember the name of. Their own bakery makes very good cakes too - we've gotten a lamb cake for Easter as well as other various cakes and coffee cakes and everything has been good. They have a very good deli selection with a lot of prepared foods. If you were hungry and wanted something quick, there are a lot of foods available you can grab. You can get soup, hot bar, sushi - which is some of the best grocery store sushi (they make it there), salads, sandwiches and lots of other miscellaneous foods. They also have some deli meats packaged so you don't have to wait in the deli line. They also have a really nice selection of precut fruits and vegetables for convenience. This review is already a lot longer than I intended, so I'll wrap it up here, but it's overall a great store in the area. The workers have always been friendly and I always find something that I don't see everywhere else which keeps me coming back to discover new things. And can't refuse the complimentary coffee on the way out!

However, I feel that the selection of items, freshness of produce, and general pricing isn't as good as what it once was. Although the self-checkout area had a different staff each time I went, the staff I encountered were all friendly and helpful. In the most recent trip, a staff named Marty even came up to me to say "Hello, how are you?" This gesture really set the tone for a happy checkout. Right after Thanksgiving, I saw a sign on sweet potatoes advertising 29 cents a pound with digital coupon and the Mariano's loyalty card, which was an excellent deal.  So, I called my husband to clip the digital coupon online with the home computer while I was getting some sweet potatoes.  However, my husband could not find the coupon on Mariano's website.  I saw a staff working in the produce department who looked like a manager, named Matthew, and told him about the situation.  He found that the deal had just expired even though the sign was still posted.  He still graciously honored the discounted price. At self-checkout, a staff named Meredith gladly honored the price as well without needing to verify it with Matthew.  Although I was only saving about $2, this kind of trust, friendliness, and flexibility were great customer service and made me happy. During the same visit, I noticed that Mariano's had replaced all of their shopping carts with brand new plastic ones.  These new shopping carts were clean and sturdy, and very smooth and easy to maneuver. I like that Mariano's really works on enhancing customers' shopping experience.   Kudos to the Northbrook management and staff for doing such a great job.
