For me, an alright Mariano's. The parking lot is spacious and maintained well and the store is large and has a large variety of items. However, I feel that the selection of items, freshness of produce, and general pricing isn't as good as what it once was. While the highest prices are still generally reasonable, the amount of middle priced to cheaper options seems to be smaller than other grocery stores nearby (even Jewel). While I enjoy going here for ready-to-eat items, I find myself going elsewhere for dry, canned, and other goods. read more

I am growing to like Mariano's in Northbrook more and more, as my shopping experiences there over the past few months have been consistently delightful. Although the self-checkout area had a different staff each time I went, the staff I encountered were all friendly and helpful. In the most recent trip, a staff named Marty even came up to me to say "Hello, how are you?" This gesture really set the tone for a happy checkout. Right after Thanksgiving, I saw a sign on sweet potatoes advertising 29 cents a pound with digital coupon and the Mariano's loyalty card, which was an excellent deal.  So, I called my husband to clip the digital coupon online with the home computer while I was getting some sweet potatoes.  However, my husband could not find the coupon on Mariano's website.  I saw a staff working in the produce department who looked like a manager, named Matthew, and told him about the situation.  He found that the deal had just expired even though the sign was still posted.  He still graciously honored the discounted price. At self-checkout, a staff named Meredith gladly honored the price as well without needing to verify it with Matthew.  Although I was only saving about $2, this kind of trust, friendliness, and flexibility were great customer service and made me happy. During the same visit, I noticed that Mariano's had replaced all of their shopping carts with brand new plastic ones.  These new shopping carts were clean and sturdy, and very smooth and easy to maneuver. I like that Mariano's really works on enhancing customers' shopping experience.   Kudos to the Northbrook management and staff for doing such a great job. read more

Mariano's continues its post-acquisition downward spiral, which is a bummer, since Whole Foods is too pricey and Jewel is somehow even worse item quality than Mariano's. Woodman's is great but farther away and doesn't have its own "counter" areas (meat, seafood, etc.). I return to Mariano's, and so it goes... They say there was a refurbishment here, which I slightly notice due to a mild layout change. Yay for that! The item selection is good and most items are pricier than they should be, if only by a just-perceptible amount. There are good deals, but other locations might be better. It is still a total mess regarding basic staffing. There is often ONE lane open outside of self-checkout, which not everyone wants to deal with. This was at 6:30pm, roughly, and it seems like more than one could be open? Even...two? They were out of paper bags, which is highly inconvenient, and you fit less into plastic bags, so you wind up paying more for more bags (it's a matter of cents, not a biggie, but a basic supply issue they keep facing over and over). The one register that was open had one person working there. He was a bit grumpy and the whole thing was inefficient, taking maybe 20 minutes altogether. They had no one helping him bag the items! This is common here. Is it so understaffed that they can't have someone scan and someone else bag? Very weird. Of course, I was given the option to bag, so I helped him a bit. I have done this at Aldi and that's part of the deal. But these are not Aldi prices, are they? read more

Stopped in to stroll around for a bit and get some Gelato and other ice cream. Sad that it appears there are items all around in areas they don't belong. The Gelato was delicious and certainly the highlight of the trip (for me). Staff was very nice and helpful. read more

Knew Bob Mariano a long time ago when we were both property owners at Eagle Ridge. Was thrilled when the family decided to open up a bunch of stores. Was a regular for years and they were fantastic in every respect. Then Kroger bought them out and they've been garbage ever since. At first it was a very slow decline but lately it feels like overnight. I'm sorry Bob, but I'll never shop here again. Screw Kroger. They ruin everything they touch. read more

Their produce section is amazing! I got greeted by a young man by the name of David. He was amazing.. he was productive, and very helpful with helping me find the correct things I needed. I now go back when I need something when I'm in the area. I did notice one of the managers (an older gentleman) treating him employees poorly and trying to argue with them... I can edit this review and say his name but to Kroger and this specific store please stop treating these employees poorly! They are truly amazing and keep this place running. Leadership shouldn't be yelling, or mistreating their workers. read more

My husband and I came to Mariano's with a shopping list to accomplish. The store was laid out in a way where it was easy to find what we were looking for. We were able to find what we were looking for quickly. There was a pretty big sale going on and lucky for us the food that we were looking for was on sale. We even passed a sale on cereal (that was not on our shopping list) that was too good to pass up. When we went to check-out, the lines at the register went pretty fast. Needed to get some hot soup for my sis so Mariano's was a jackpot for offering warm and cold meal options. For myself I tried their sushi, it was alright. I appreciated the self-checkout line by the food stations to avoid the long lines at the other end of the store. Well stocked store and clean. Note for the registers: must hit the cash option first before feeding coins into the slot. Most registers I've used automatically deduct upon adding money, but not this one. Luckily the attendant nearby took care of me and this oopsie mishap. A+ customer service! read more

I'm a big fan of Mariano's and this location is one of my favorites. The huge selection of fresh food is amazing, whether you want pizza, sushi, or a sandwich. I also appreciate their pharmacy. I was able to transfer my prescription from North Carolina when I was on a trip and ran out of my medication unexpectedly. They are so very helpful. Highly recommended. read more

What's really great about this Mariano's is its cheese section. It's huge. And it's not just cheddar and parmesan. They have here some high quality cheeses. You'll find St. Augr (one of my favorites blues), as well as mimolette, a French cow's milk which is delicious and something I only learned of when I was at Marche in Glen Ellyn. They also have some packaged pancetta, and some jamon, too. Jars of Divina brand fig spread and sour cherry spread, along with everything else you need to make a great cheese board. I'm glad that I found this because it would be much easier for me to head to Northbrook than out to Glen Ellyn. read more

Please Please some other chain please take it over and fire all the horrible staff that stand around here doing absolutely nothing! Mariano's has taken a complete nosedive ever since the Kroger buyout. Here's a few reasons why you should take your business elsewhere: 1. Consistently Understaffed. If you want to try their coffee bar, pizzeria, or barbecue station, you're going to have to track down an employee elsewhere in the store and request service. Utterly ridiculous. 2. Overpriced/Expired Inventory. These two issues go hand in hand. Customers spot the markups and decide to shop elsewhere, so the products remain on the shelves and collect dust. 3. Rude Employees. I had an unpleasant interaction at the meat counter. All I wanted was a single cut of meat, grilled at the store to save me the hassle of cooking and cleanup. When I made my request, the disgruntled employee responded, "I don't know why you people don't grill outside in the summer." Funny, I don't remember ordering a side of sass with my steak. Also, you might want to refrain from referring to certain customers as "you people." I laughed it off (not going to let some sad meat man rain on my parade), but other customers will absolutely get you fired for those kinds of comments. read more

I adored Mariano's when I first discovered it several months ago. I still find it to be the most beautiful grocery store. It cannot be a coincidence that the owners are Italian, as this nation is known for quality design and love for great food. That is why it took me a while to admit to myself that the produce here consistently low quality, way past the fresh state. My advice is to buy your fruits and vegetables elsewhere or at least to be very selective. Since fresh produce is very important to my household, as it should be to everyone, I reduced the rating to 3 stars. I used to like to go here because it is right between my home and work but I was very disappointed that they did not make any Paczkis on Fat Tuesday morning and the baker seemed please to tell me they ran out last night...so what about this morning, foolish woman! NO CAKE.. not one employee called me to say they couldn't make it??? Why... don't know!!! This Turkey was purchased in good faith and never should have been merchandised for sale. Mariano's put my family in danger of getting very ill. We returned the turkey for credit however I'm not too happy unnecessarily having to expose ourselves to the corona virus a second time. This is all about profit over safety. The package also exhibited signs that the turkey had been previously thawed. Beware of all sell by and expiration dates - alway check them on every item - in today's world people will let their guard down and it to can be dangerous. I thought I would provide an update to my review based on grocery pickup during the Illinois stay-at-home order in case others are considering it as an option. First, I am extremely grateful that Mariano's is offering this service and waiving the typical $4.95 pick-up fee. In general, the staff have been helpful and pleasant to interact with (from a safe social distance, of course). But their processes don't make any sense and we've found that, more often than not, we need to supplement our grocery pick-up with a delivery from another store. Though their policy says they call to inform you of substitutions or out of stock items, that isn't their practice. Of seven pick-up orders, I received a call once and that call came as I was already pulling into the parking lot at my scheduled arrival time. This means that I'm finding out when I pay - or even after - what items weren't available. Their substitutions, when made, are wildly inconsistent. I had a product in my cart that cost $17.99; they replaced it with a $.99 semi-related product without calling or talking to me. We ordered a bag of tortilla chips and they marked it as out of stock. While I understand the food supply chain has been disrupted, I find it hard to believe there were no tortilla chips in the entire store (especially when we were easily able to get them from another local store). On one occasion, I was called and asked to come as soon as possible to get my order, several hours before my scheduled time. On another, I was called and told my order wouldn't be ready and they would call me back when it was, but they had no estimate for when that might be. I am torn between the gratitude I feel toward Mariano's for offering this service and frustration that the customer service issues have made this service a game of "What groceries will we actually get?". read more

If I could give negative stars for this location - I WOULD! Worst service I received tonight! I had to pretty much stare at one of the workers as she went to the back to chat with someone and then I asked for the Tiramisu cake and to have them put " Happy Birthday Magda" on the cake. She said she couldn't do it but grabbed someone else! What do I get!!!??? The worst ever icing cake writing. The bakery worker quickly iced it, boxed it, and sealed the box. She didn't even bother to show me what the EFFF she wrote on it. When I told her that I needed to see what she wrote, I got a sigh from her and then as she was having difficulty peeling the ingredient sticker from the box with her gloves, I told her I'd do it myself and then she disappeared and walked off. Worst ever customer service. I was in a rush and had to get home. I stopped at his location bc it was on my way home and wanted to have a cake ready for someone in the office so that I didn't have to rush in the morning to get her birthday cake. I would've been better off going to the Mariano's on Willow and Sanders! I do not recommend this locations bakery for the simple fact that I got the worst service ever! Mariano's should always have someone on shift that can "decorate or ice" OR even have templates for people that DONOT know how to ice letters on. Maybe its just me but I don't think the people who work here like working here. Very seldom does an employee greet you or offer something to make you feel good about shopping there. The other Mariano's that I frequent on Willow and Sanders has the same tone. The only positive for me are the butchers, they seem very pleasant and knowledgeable. This review is based on their hot food offerings. After hearing rave reviews about how you can buy a steak here and the butcher will cook it to your liking, free of charge, I can't believe I didn't know about the hot food you could buy there. They have a sushi station full of pre-made sushi that looked pretty tasty, a BBQ station with lots of meat choice and plates for about $8.00 (1 meat and 2 sides), and then the deli that has $7.00 meals (1 meat and 2 sides). Make your selection and you have a nice hot meal to eat in the store dining area. It's not fancy but it's good. I would come back anytime! 1 star gets docked for the hot food checkout stand not having a scale to weigh your container. You have to go stand in the grocery lanes because that's the only area of the store with scales. Am I lazy? Maybe, but that seems like a very basic thing to have when you buy food and its based on weight. read more
