I have been shopping here for more than two decades. The produce and seasonal selections have always been good, and I especially loved how they stocked items for every occasion. Their coupons often have great deals, even though they sometimes do not ring up correctly without assistance ,but at least they try to offer discounts. Lately, however, I have noticed the produce stock has become inconsistent, the quality has diminished, and I can no longer rely on availability the way I once could. This used to be my dependable last-minute shopping stop, but unfortunately not anymore. What disappointed me most was an experience I recently had while shopping for groceries. I noticed many wilted flowers and potted plants being thrown away, so I politely asked if they could donate them instead. I spoke with Scott, the manager, and was disappointed by how bluntly and unwillingly he responded. He said they were already donating to an old age center, while the florist mentioned they had stopped donating there long ago. It was discouraging to see so much waste when those flowers could still be used meaningfully by churches or community spaces where they are appreciated throughout the day. The rude and unfriendly interaction made the experience even more disappointing. read more

Why isn't checking expiration dates one of the first steps when the employee is doing the online shopping? I received an expired item that you won't even believe me as to how old it is... over 1 1/2 years expired!! (yeah this is pretty gross, huh) How does a grocery store have items on their shelves that EXPIRED almost 2 years ago?!?!?!?! I contacted the store to make sure they take any others off the shelf. First of all, I have been a customer since the GRAND OPENING of this Jewel store back in April of 1999. My previous review was taken down because they said it was not clear about the experience being first hand. I do not know if a human reviews these posts, but I can assure you that my reviews are FIRST HAND! They are my experiences. I have uploaded photos when necessary to illustrate or prove a point concerning this business. I would like to say that Scott Cygan the general manager was contacted and he assured me that the situation with the litter in the parking lot from hand wipes that the store provides and is left inside the shopping carts will be addressed. He stated that workers would be cleaning up the parking lot of litter on a weekly basis or when necessary. Success! Scott Cygan also addressed to me the noise that a contractor had made during after hours, (11 PM) well beyond the legal limit and assured me that the work would be done after 7 AM when it is legal and acceptable by community standards to do so. The call was productive and friendly. I am giving this store a 5 star review and Scott Cygan is working hard for the community of Highland Park. Thank you! read more

I like everything about this Jewel except their produce department. Why is the same fruit or vegetable in three different places? I realize it's shopping psychology, cuz they want me to see other stuff on the way to what I need, but it only causes frustration, and at that point I'm not buying any extras, I just can't wait to get out. I'm very happy with Jewel-Osco in Highland Park. Their selection is good. The staff is terrific, especially Mike at check-out. I like the coupons although I wish I could just check them all off with one click. The produce department has a terrific variety. Bakery is good too. Meat department is good although they run out of lamb chops too often but the fish is almost always good. Pharmacy is great, very friendly and accommodating with vaccines and scripts. Not as many long lines at check-out as there used to be, even on holidays. Self checkout assistance is very good. I'm totally satisfied and have met the manager and he has been very helpful. Prices are too high but I think that's just the sign of the times. read more

They now have very tiny signs to get savings on clip coupons that look different than the usual signs and unless you go within 5 inches of the sign you would miss it, and I have. Another complaint is the kosher deli. Although I appreciate the convenience isn't there hygiene requirements requiring beards to be covered to prevent contamination? Food is not packaged properly. Staff is not trained properly. On check out cashier while ringing blackberries popped open container and they spilled everywhere. Next bagger while bagging eggs spills a few. In her defense packaging for eggs was terrible. Suggested she tape shut or rubber band the carton together to avoid future spills. Her response was no I'll just put it in a plastic bag. My response was, but that won't prevent them from spilling in my car. She was gracious and got another pack. Put the food in my car. Then on arrival home lifted the bags out. One of the bags was packed too heavily and not doubled.The handles flew off the bag. How have I not reviewed this store during the pandemic? Contrary to the negative reviews, I love this particular Jewel. The manager runs it like a tight ship, and many of the employees know us. They even know my hubby by name, since he does most of the shopping. Even though it's a large chain store, it feels small to us. When we do shop, we make a point to shop late at night or at odd times to avoid crowds. We know their staff by name, and we always look forward to saying hello. I've felt 100% safe at this Jewel since the beginning of Covid. They've done their best to keep everything stocked, and there are always wipes at the front for the grocery carts. They have hand sanitizer at all the cashier stations, and there are directional arrows down each aisle and 6' distance stickers on the floor near the checkout stations. At the beginning of Covid, they widened many of the aisles for safer shopping. The staff members wear gloves and masks, and they also have plexi shields everywhere. Funny story. One night I made my hubby run out for a pack of mechanical pencils for my kiddos. They needed them for school. It was close to closing, and he was the only shopper in the store. He called me on the phone to ask me which ones to get, and over the loud speaker I heard them call him by name as a joke and said, "okay, Danny, it's time to go. We're closing up!" It was hilarious!! While this store is close to me I've always found it sub-par so don't shop there much. But my most recent trip is likely to be my last. I bought a party tray of slice cheeses and when I opened it 2 days later I noticed a while film over the cheese and an odor. I think looked at the expiration date and the date was 12/21. 6 months expired cheese they are selling. I also had to throw away some fresh broccoli which was only 2 days old from purchase. They had limited broccoli when I went and it didn't look great but upon closer inspection once home it had molded and smelled off. With how high pricing has gotten I can't afford to throw away newly purchased food. I won't be back. read more

Actually a little surprised by the generally low ratings. I won't give it 5 stars cause no place is perfect but this Jewel is pretty darn good.Though there are two Jewels closer to me (equidistant- 1 north of me and 1 south) this is the Jewel I come to as it has the kosher deli and bakery and I can get everything that meets my kosher needs. Needless to say, I can also get whatever else (non kosher) I need that is available at all other groceries. I, like most, find the management and employees to usually be friendly, nice, and helpful. Also, I haven't noticed excessive turnover. The prices are within reason and I like their reward program. As others have noted, this is a full service store with the attached drug store. I'm torn on this one because I go to Jewel weekly (okay, more often than that - I always forget something we need) and am generally happy with it. The layout of the store makes sense, the staff are helpful when asked questions, and the selection is great. I appreciate the Kosher food selection and robust options for Jewish observances with dietary guidelines. But the shelves are regularly stocked with food that is past its Best By date. Make sure you check before adding anything to your cart. I've tried on several recent visits to buy Ocean Spray Pink Cranberry juice, and it's weeks past its date. The stock crew clearly needs to learn to check existing stock, not just replace and add to what's on the shelves. I've tried pointing it out when I'm in store, but it happens so often that they would need to put me on payroll to make it worth identifying every item I find. They're also consistently understaffed at the checkout lanes and don't have self-checkout. I understand that having cashiers and baggers keeps jobs in our community, but that only works if there are actual employees doing those jobs. Management needs to do a better job of watching their consumer trends and planning labor accordingly. read more

Small store that happens to be closest to me. Big Guy in produce must certainly be the town grump. Someone get this man some multivitamins or a vegetable! Any time of day, any day of the week. He's never helpful. This is how their sales work: grab an exact likeness of the advertised image or forever be told that you have the wrong item. No one has ever told me about substitutions. This specific location, Highland Park, has the best Store Management, their selection of products is always evolving and the Store Manager, Scott is not a stranger, he is visible, on the floor, he recognizes the regular shoppers, engages with all, and always say's Hi!!! I'm a regular, have been a Yelp procrastinator and should have written this recommendation sooner. With that said; Yesterday my wife wasn't feeling well and had a craving for fried chicken, no problem, she requested kosher fried chicken because the chicken seems to be higher quality. With that said I made the journey to Jewel HP and discovered some one just a few minutes before I arrived had wiped out their entire prepared inventory of kosher fried chicken, bought every piece. LOL, well Jeff, the counter clerk asked me if I had some shopping to do and that he would be happy to prepare a "Fresh", Hot batch!!! What a nice guy.... A solution and one that creates shopper loyalty - a shout out to Jeff in the Kosher Deli!!! While I am complimenting I also need to shout out to Steven, he always has this giant smile, he always says hello, whether its in the parking lot or at the check out. Compared to the old store this one is five stars. Bigger store with more selections and wider isles. That old store was so tight it was aggravating. I like the wine selection as well. I could find my fav red blend here but had to order it at Binny's for a lot more dough. Now I can get it here for less and get another 10% off if I buy 6 bottles or more...hell that's too easy! This is also my pharmacy and if you can get two trips for the price of one I'm in for that anytime. This Jewel-Osco store is pretty conveniently located, fairly well maintained, is often well staffed (even late at night), they have a good selection of products, and their prices are pretty reasonable for the area. This is the store I go to for most of my paper goods, most canned goods, some frozen items, beverages, milk, alcoholic drinks, occasionally bread, and once in a while produce. However, I've found their produce goes bad VERY quickly. I've had a bag of salad go bad within 24 hours of purchase, despite being still 4 days before the sell-by date and having been immediately refrigerated... And I'm not talking a few things being wilted; this bag was all slimy and gross. Almost all of the tender fruit and produce goes bad within 2 ~ 3 days, with rare exception. As such, I don't recommend getting produce here UNLESS you're going to be consuming it right away. With that caveat in mind, their selection of produce is good. Their hot food and salad bar is a little underwhelming, though their deli counter is really nice (though it closes earlier than other stores I've seen in the area). Their meats and seafood are okay - not bad, not great, and maybe a little more expensive for the average quality. Fortunately, there's usually something on sale, that makes it more worthwhile. The store is pretty well maintained, and the staff are mostly seasoned customer service professionals - they know their stuff, and the checkout lines move fast. Generally I can't do all of my shopping here, but I also couldn't get by without doing some of my shopping here. They still excel in some aspects, compared to other markets in the area, but it's a shame their produce always seems to go bad so quickly - that's the difference between 3 stars and 4 stars, right there. read more

Many people are standing in line packed in like sardines. One of the two cashiers has to call for help from front twice. This is the day before a holiday and there was very poor planning about how to take people's money. After waiting 10 minutes with no progress....I walked out! He is a bargain-hunter, and that is one thing the Jewel does offer... lower prices on lots of things compared to other groceries in the area. But not always! The stigma against Sunset for its supposedly high prices is not always borne out. The one thing Jewel does way, way better than Sunset-- that it really does best-- is its kosher for passover selection. Totally unbeatable. Especially their chocolate covered matzah. Wow. One of the worst cashiers I've ever had. I only come to this location when I need to pick up stuff for food projects and rewards for students at work. It's not a bad location -- good selection of kosher and health foods, clean, etc. However, I had to stop by and pick up some things today and found myself in the checkout lane of one crabby woman. She made me wait so she could buy things for herself first. She talked with a coworker for a few minutes before acknowledging me. Then she took my Jewel card without a word and handed it back to me. She didn't tell me the total cost. She grabbed the bag from the bagger (who had special needs but seemed sweet) and re-bagged my items. The bagger seemed unhappy about that. She didn't look at me at all. She just shoved my receipt at me without a word. And when I mistakenly thought she didn't give my my receipt, she spoke at me with an annoyed tone of voice before I found it in my purse. I left feeling completely ignored and worthless. I simply love this Jewel. The staff goes above and beyond to be helpful, considerate and welcoming. Specifically managers Jamie and Paul, Ana in the meat department, the produce guy (sorry the name escapes me at the moment!), the many cashiers... I would give the staff six stars if I could! They are always will stocked and have good prices. Compared to other Jewels, the wait is reasonable in the checkout lines unless you go during peak times. We recently moved from Highland Park to Northbrook and I have been thoroughly disappointed (again and again) by our local Jewel in Glenview. The Highland Park Jewel will always be my family's preferred Jewel and for that reason I will travel back to HP for my larger grocery trips! read more

Just so everyone knows, I am a multiple grocery store shopper. No I don't have a destiny for punishment nor tons of time to spare. I am just quite picky about my groceries. So, needless to say, Jewel is one of my three stops and I don't get all my items here. This Jewel has plenty of parking. It can get quite busy on the weekends so you just have to park farther away, but it's there. It's a large store. With lots of special items/aisles. It's organization doesn't always make sense to me, but I got it down now. If I can't find it anywhere else, I can usually find what I am looking for here. The people at check out are usually friendly. Checkout is usually efficient and you don't have to wait for too long. But we all know there are times when we do have to wait. Smile. :) They prices are usually decent, especially when the items I need are on sale! They always have tons of promos. I am not a promo person, but if you are they are the place. read more

What I don't like about Jewel is that some of their shoppers have special needs too, like standing in front of an item staring and hogging the area with their cart and it's always the item you want at that same moment! Another thing I can't stand is that it always seems everyone gets to the lines at the same friggen time and there are never enough cashiers! Ugh. I hate this Jewel. And I want to love it. It's the closest reasonably-priced grocery store to me. The prices alone earn Jewel the 2nd star. But I can't give them any more than that. I loathe coming here and generally refuse to buy fruits and vegetables here, because they're always awful. Last time I was here, they had the Passover displays up, which itself is fine - I appreciate that they have so many Passover options, but... it meant that they h ad moved half of the produce department and a bunch of the meats and when I asked multiple employees where I could find non-kosher chicken (because it wasn't in its normal spot and I really didn't want to pay the upcharge) they shrugged and walked away. Seriously? The aisles are tight, the crowds are awful (and rude!!), and the produce is terrible. In short, miserable. But the prices. And the selection on the interior aisles. But ugh. read more

This store is very poorly run. Employees are never around or helpful. When there is an issue management just shrugs at you and offers no solutions. The MyMix app is very poorly executed. They will offer special offers on products that are not even carried in the store. Stores are supposedly not allowed to rectify the situation. Meanwhile, the customer who was solicited is left out with nothing. You can't claim to be the neighborhood grocer but then leave your employees powerless to solve basic issues. Employees walking around doing nothing, three sitting by checkout having coffee on break. 15 minutes later the manager come up and get reasoning for this is that she was it aware. Here's a tip...... your labor dollars being more important than the time of your customers will result in no customers so you won't have to save labor $$$. I will never go back. read more
