I'm originally from Long Island, and since moving out here, I've pretty much just been settling for Jewel. Honestly, I thought that was just the standard for suburban grocery stores around here. I hadn't even heard of Sunset Foods until a TV commercial popped up the other night. Back in NY, I practically lived at Uncle Giuseppe's, and I've been majorly missing that high-end, Italian-market vibe. The commercial looked legit, so this past Saturday, I figured why not make the drive up to Highland Park and check it out. The second I pulled up, it just felt different. I got a super warm greeting walking in, but what really sold me was this guy outside grilling hot dogs right by the entrance. Honestly, just catching that smell in the weekend air instantly took me back to summers on Long Island. The store itself has a great vibe, really clean and upscale. I hit the cheese section first because the gourmet selection is massive. A really nice staff member saw me looking a bit overwhelmed and helped me pick out a few incredible cheeses. Then I hit the bakery and deli, totally overloading my basket with random finds, including a massive brownie that looked insane, and some awesome cured meats. But the real test was the meat and seafood counter. At Jewel, half the time the meat looks like it's turning brown under the plastic wrap. Sunset is the exact opposite. Everything looked fresh and bright. They were running a sale on salmon, and I picked up a filet that was delicious. Yeah, the register total was definitely higher than what I'd pay at Jewel, but the quality difference is night and day. You get what you pay for. So glad I found this place, it's the closest thing to home I've found yet. read more

My wife encourage me to stop at the Sunset Foods while I was over here to see what this place that I offer. The staff here was absolutely friendly but food-wise, I thought the selection was pretty minimal , Bare Bones and above all a bit overpriced which kind of disappointed my experience here. Overall, this place has a variety of many things from vegan options for my wife to a variety of cold drinks to go. Check out lines move by pretty fast as well. I was going to a party and last-minute decided to pick up some flowers. (I am compulsive about never showing up empty-handed). The flower bouquets were beautiful. I selected a deep red rose and a bright pink rose bouquet. There were also peony bouquets (my favorite and pretty unusual to find at a grocery store). Another browser in the flower department commented on how gorgeous the colors were. The point is, Sunset Foods always has beautiful flowers, and it is easier than going to a floral shop, especially last minute. First, I do recommend Sunset Foods, they offer quality and selection. However I am going to vent a bit. I stopped by today to purchase from their deli, Boardhead whole milk mozzarella for my home made pizza. My request for paper in between the slices was accommodated however in the clerks effort to give me the amount I requested he finished the transaction weighing the entire package paper and package and the pricing sticker included the weight of the package. It's not a lot of money but it's so wrong! And the State of Illinois would frown. At the checkout I asked for the manager to share and her reply was the bag doesn't weigh anything. Really? Just think how many transactions each day with an additional $.15 to $.25 are added to the already cost. It adds up and not right. So the next time you're at a store that weighs deli, meat or produce and they don't tare the scale you're getting ripped off. Just saying! read more

Nicole, from Sunset Foods Catering helped me plan a menu for a 40 person shower. She was spot on with all her advice and attentive with her communication. The food was delivered right on time and the delivery man was so polite and helpful. The food! - the most important part - was presented beautifully and was delicious! We ordered lox and bagel trays with mini sandwiches, fruit and muffins. Everything was fresh and plentiful. I still cannot believe how much lox they provide per person! The lady's room is abominable! It is in dire need of renovation. The garbage is always overflowing, and the grout on the floor is old and dirty. It is about time that they install hands-free sinks and paper towel dispensers. It is insulting to me and the rest of their customers that we are subjected to such poor facilities. Here's what you need to know: this is an old school grocery store that is all about extreme markups for an older clientele that doesn't have the comparison pricing or buyer power. Unethically expensive, especially for organic foods. May 2020 prices: A lb of organic valley butter $10.15. what??? That is such extreme gouging... it's a single pound of butter. A head of organic cauliflower $9. I am always so shocked at the terrible prices here, and only because Whole Foods is out of certain items are we forced to shop here. Just awful pricing. I did suspect that they are gouging customers even more so during COVID. By choice, I would never shop here. The only reason I give them a 2nd star is because they have items in stock. Customer service is just OK. I just can't understand how they are in business with Whole Foods up the street. read more

This grocery store is a high-end place where the North Shore residents get treated the way they expect. Selection: They limit the number of each item taking up the shelf space, therefore, they have even better variety than your typical supermarket. The hot and cold deli provides great selection of ready to eat foods. The soup station next to the deli has 3 or 4 kinds of soup every day, but the trick is that there are 2 soup stations - the second one is by the fish department and provides delicious chowders. Produce: Large produce section with salad bar and cut fruit. Please stop by the weighing station where the employees weight and mark your produce - this makes the check out process faster. Customer Service: If you do not see an item that you are looking for, ask one of the many employees around. The other day I was looking for raspberries and they were completely out. I asked an associate who was replenishing veggies and he put down what he was doing and went in the back because he was certain they were just receiving a shipment. Indeed, he emerged from the back area, holding 3 packages. I took 2 and a lady who overheard us promptly took the third. My favorite part: Even after 2 years of shopping here, I still enjoy the level of attention here. When approaching the registers, they promptly take your cart from you and load the items on the belt. I have not seen this in any other store, ever. Super nice perk. In addition - you have an option to leave your bagged groceries behind and go get your car empty-handed. You get a ticket with a number matching the number on the cart, pull your car to the front, pop your trunk and they load it in. This is especially nice if you have either too much stuff or if the weather is bad, since the entry is under a cover. Price: You don't expect a store like this to be cheap, do you? read more

Sunset... you had me 35 years ago when I first came to HP. And now that you provide smaller carts so we don't all get jammed up in the aisles, I love you even more. I don't care what holiday it is, or what you celebrate, Sunset will have what you need. And the quality is excellent. Some things that are noteworthy to me: They have frozen minute maid lemon juice when everyone else in the area is not carrying it anymore. Their meat is high quality. I always get their tenderloin for special occasions. It's always A+ You want something special? They probably make it.... just check with the deli. I don't have to repack my goods. They train their help and make sure they know what they are doing. Sure, their parking lot gets crazy on weekends and at holiday prep time... but there is a reason for that. I have been shopping Sunset Highland Park for 30 years. It was always a very pleasant experience and one I looked forward to. With the onslaught of Covid, Sunset discontinued various practices such as produce weighing in the produce department, employees helping customers with loading groceries onto the checkout stands, and many other things that set them far above the competition. When inflation hit the country, Sunset raised almost all of their prices. My favorite canned tomatoes went from $1.39 to $2.59, an increase of over 75%. Land o'Lakes butter went well over $7.00 per pound and was available elsewhere for at least $1.00 less. Eggs: they've gone up everywhere and I am still trying to figure out why. Dutch Pride, the lowest priced eggs, are well over $3 per dozen. And that's way at the bottom of the scale. Last week I bought ground chuck. It was a big solid glob of fat so I used it for spaghetti. four ounces of the pound package was pure fat, I weighed it after I drained it. So I paid for hamburger that was 25% lard. We have always loved their ground chuck, but this was disgusting. I question whether there is anything at the store that has not been increased. Granted all stores have increased prices, but Sunset seems to have done the lion's share of increasing. Sunset HP has a captive audience: families with plenty of money, professionals who don't look at prices and older people who have no financial difficulties. I am free to spend what I want on groceries but I have to say that coupled with the fact that service has notably dwindled, I have little desire to shop there anymore. Not too sure what all the hype is about here. Seems pretty dumpy, and the prices are absolutely outrageous (almost twice the amount for something basic like hummus and English cucumbers). Selection is small, and the bathrooms are disgusting. I guess there are minor renovations being done, but nothing worth noting. Simply put, everything you could ask for in a grocery store. Not overpriced, despite upper-echelon clientele. Selection is so vast and non-agenda driven i.e. Whole Foods. Quality of deli, produce and all other in-house offerings is above the chains that are marketed to yuppies (not a direct shot at Treasure Island, but definitely a shot at Trader Joe's). Great wine selection, w/out being in-your-face about it, like seemingly everywhere these days. Specific highlights are: Tallgrass Steaks (grass-fed, top quality), excellent fish & shellfish, staff's willingness to please. If there is something you saw one time, its not there your next trip, they will call you the next time they have it. I love doing my grocery shopping at Sunset. Their produce is the freshest around, their deli the highest quality, their seafood department the most informed. Their customer service is impeccable-- ask the produce guys for the best eating apple, or the ripest peaches, and they'll give you a knowledgeable, CORRECT answer! And if you tell the manager they don't have something, he'll add it to his list and it'll probably be in stock soon. They also unload your grocery carts for you, and load your car if you'd like. Plus, I've found it a myth that their prices are significantly higher than at Jewel or Dominick's, the other grocery stores that are realistically nearby. They're also more likely to have specialty items than either of those places. And yes, the Lake Forest location is bigger, and has more samples-- but this one is easier to navigate, less overwhelming... and conveniently in downtown HP! My grandmother shopped at Sunset when she lived here more than 40 years ago... I'll always do my shopping at Sunset whenever I have a choice. read more

It's even more expensive than Whole Foods, which is known as "Whole Paycheck." I live in Highland Park and Sunset foods is my favorite grocery store, not only because it is convenient, but because of the quality and service. There are 3 other major groceries stores only 5 - 10 minutes further from me than Sunset, and with lower prices on some items, but I will not give up quality for a few dollars. Sunset has 2 higher quality of meat and fish than the other stores. When others say Sunset meat is more expensive than competitors they don't take into account that there are different grades of beef even within the "Choice" grade, for example, and you can notice the taste difference in the cheaper grades at other stores. I like the fact that you can get in and out of Sunset much quicker than other grocery stores. They don't stock as many rows and columns of the same thing, so you don't have to walk a mile to find everything you need. They re-stock on a timely basis and, unlike the nearest competitor, you never find the shelves of their on-sales items empty. Their liquor department is wonderful. Although their wine section has less space than their newest competitor, they actually offer a bigger variety of labels because they do not have row-after-row of the same bottle. Another plus is that the check-out crew is there to serve you and help you get out as quickly as possible. Unlike the competitor where you have to wait until the cashiers are talking to each other about their work schedule, lunch break, etc. before serve you. I'm probably a bit of a weirdo in how much I like this grocery store. Be warned that there's certainly a healthy dose of nostalgia in it, as this was the grocery store we went to when I was growing up. I still stop in occasionally when I'm in the area. It is a high quality grocery store. So much better than Jewel and Dominicks. Better customer service, better quality products, better variety. I bought spoiled fish today at Sunset and though that was a very unpleasant surprise the way it was resolved is to be applauded. In 22 years shopping here I have never had a (quality) problem in the fish department. I was shopping on a Sunday afternoon and though I avoid buying fish on Sunday, I bought the last 2 catfish fillets knowing I would be home in 5 minutes and they ARE Sunset Foods. Fast forward to 7pm. The potatoes are coming out of the oven in 10 minutes, the sauteed spinach is underway and I get the catfish from the fridge. I opened the package and the very distinct smell of past-its-prime fish is in my face. Crap. Dinner ruined. I was angry and upset. I've had this kind of experience with both the HP Jewel and Northbrook's Garden Fresh, but Sunset really doesn't have those kind of issues.. I figured I would send the hubby to the store, but would phone 1st so they'd have something ready and he could just ask for a certain person (that's what I've come to expect) as a level of service. I called the fish department directly and vented. The fish person was understanding and apologetic, and suggested I speak to the manager. A manager, whose name I recognized as she identified herself, listened patiently. She understood my anger and frustration with my dinner being ruined. What happened next is what separates Sunset from all other stores. She asked if they could bring me something else! As in drive it to my house! I told her if there was FRESH catfish or tilipia, then that would be great. In less than 15 minutes, said manager was at my door with 2 perfect tilipia fillets and a refund slip, which she filled in for the price I'd paid for the catfish. I should not have been sold the fish earlier in the day, but... everyone can make a mistake. It's how mistakes are resolved that show what kind of organization you're dealing with. I love the HP Sunset for what it DOES do--it's the only place I can get wild-caught Gulf shrimp from my home in Texas. Their fish department is always well-stocked. I live within walking distance of sunset, and while I am almost positive I am the first person ever to walk away from sunset with my groceries (as opposed to driving), I'm there almost every day. Sunset is AMAZING. it is VERY EXPENSIVE, like whole foods cooler aunt, who isn't actually organic or anything, just super DELICIOUS. These are the things you buy at sunset: produce (which, heads up, you have to have weighed and bagged IN THE PRODUCE DEPARTMENT, so don't go wandering off with your peaches), SALAD BAR, prepared foods, cheese, gourmet anything. These are the things you DONT buy at sunset: your regular groceries. It's really pricey! Don't do your regular shopping here! But for your non-regular, fun, delicious, pre-Ravinia shoppig, or "i forgot a lemon" shopping, this place can't be beat. Plus the service is amazing. They unload your basket! I'm from the south, where car service at the grocery is standard, but it's really special in the chicago area, so if you're down with that, you'll like this (again, I never have driven to sunset, which is WEIRD, but I am highland park's sole walker.) Hmm I am not sure how this place ranks as high as it does. I wondered on in after going to my eye doctor as my eyes were irritated from drops and I could not see well enough to drive back. Unfortunately I still could see the prices here. My trip into the store started where I saw someone with samples... someone who was too preoccupied with his cell phone to open the samples.... The sale prices for most items where higher than Whole Foods regular prices... seriously? For the first time in 15 years i have encountered a very bad customer service and treatment at this store. One of the workers I believe his name is Roberto was not very nice. He was not really in the mood to help me; while i was asking him where is the Gatorade and water is located he just said right there didn't even look at me because he was reading something with a paper in his hands. Then i asked for the he said its right there! And i said sir it's actually behind you. But he still continues to point somewhere where in fact i told him i have it already in my hand! It is right there behind you i keep telling him that. The tone of his voice sounds agitated and not happy. It really bothers me because as one of the customers of Sunset we all know that they are very expensive, but we shop there because of their customer service. I talked to Mike the frond end manager, but was not very helpful at first and in fact sided his employee without even figuring out the real story. So i talked to the manager i believe her name is Rosa and she was very helpful and nice to me. She really act professionally as a good manager should. Anyway, everything is fine and she said she will take care of the issue.. it's just sad that most of their employees are doing a good job and the reputation of this store will be just ruined by one employee or one bad apple. If you are looking for a food store that has the lowest prices and shabby service, don't shop here. Stay away. Please. This store is outstanding. Some complain that the prices are higher than elsewhere, but they sure are not by much, if especially if one watches the weekly specials. It took me awhile to get used to the layout of the Highland Park Sunset, after shopping at the Lake Forest location for years. Once I mastered it, shopping here is great. The employees are always ready to serve. * Case in point, I was in the parking lot, walk to the store leisurely and looking around--a gentleman asks if he can help me. It's the person responsible for the parking lots in all locations. * Case in point, we prefer a certain bard of potato chips, but they away seemed to have mostly broken chips. Since we had purchased them in the Lake Forest store before, I mentioned to a manager . The chips I have purchased since have been perfect with very few broken ones. The people here are always ready to help. When you ask where something is, almost without fail instead of saying something like "aisle 28," they drop whatever they are doing and take you there. High quality meats. Brands like Tallgrass and Neiman Ranch. While the meat is pre wrapped, the butchers are happy to take special requests like re-wrapping ground beef into a smaller package. The seafood department is very accommodating. The fish is always fresh, the will skin, bone and even cook it upon request. I have never had a problem with their seafood, unlike a certain organic market's. Great deli department. The staff there is vary nice, patient and accommodating. If there are too many buns in the Sunset baked packages, the staff will happily repackage. The store has a huge selection of frozen foods and dairy. Very nice wine and beer department, too. Like all Sunsets, the employees unload your cart, bag the groceries (paper or plastic--which I see a number of people bring back to recycle). Grocery pickup and no tipping. This store has a number of long term employees. One of the gentlemen at the pickup station proudly told me about his 23rd year there. A tip---shop here on Wednesday--that way you get both the previous weeks and the next weeks special prices. So, you get what you pay for. If you want a store without this high level of quality products and service, don't shop here. Ever. read more

Yes, this location is clean. Yes, this location has wonderful produce, meats, deli, dairy, etc. Yes, they have all of the luxuries north shore-ites have come to expect from Sunset Foods. But this location is SLOW. We went in on Sunday afternoon (around 1:30) to pick up a few things to take to Ravinia with us. It took the deli over 10 minutes to make one sandwich. My BF went through the rest of the store and found everything else we wanted/needed before I was done waiting for one sandwich. Then... I had to wait for the second sandwich. The next time I want Ravinia food, I'll go to Anton's. But, I will keep going to Sunset for meats and produce, I just prefer my Long Grove location instead of Highland Park. read more

I think this store had seen its better days in more ways than one. It's old , its a tired layout with the same expensive price points on just about everything. There are so many other places to shop now that provide a better experience as far non congested isles and newer, cleaner feel to it. THANK YOU IVAN! We are in Milwaukee but my wife grew-up in Highland Park, so when it came time to send a Sympathy Basket to relations there, she looked no further then Sunset Foods. Calling Thursday, she was directly connected to Ivan the Produce Manager. Explaining our situation, Ivan took the time to fully explain the most popular offerings and the possibilities of designing our own basket. Finally selecting a special basket ($50 plus $10 delivery) with Sympathy Card, delivery time and payment, the arrangements were completed. Friday at 11 a.m., the basket arrived within the minute. Our regular "go to" grocery. We shop a lot of deli and prepared foods. They just opened a new BBQ department. We've shopped the same counter in Lake Forrest almost every week. The LF crew is extraordinary and provides outstanding service. The crew in HP was indifferent, insulting and created an awful experience. HP is actually closer and we excited to learn they had opened an outpost of our favorite department. Going to HP proved to be a grand mistake - back to LF. read more

Dear Sunset, I LOVE you! I swear there is no other grocery store like this one. I was in Israel, and some women found out where I was from and told me how amazing Sunset is! Seriously!?They have the most amazing customer service- ever. Grew up in Highland Park, so very familiar with this grocery as it's where my parents shop/ still shop. It maybe a tad overpriced but but if you want them to unpack your cart and have them put your groceries in your car, it's probably worth it. If you ever need boxes they will always give you as many as you need. My roommate and I both got our moving boxes there, no extra charge. The last and most important and the reason I gave sunset 5 stars is this. I'm doing the Chiditarod, which is a grocery cart race/ bar crawl/ food drive. You need to race around the city with a grocery cart and finish the race with 42lbs of food. Anyways, most places aren't so kind on giving out their carts. At Sunset it was just amazing the customer service I received . Not only was it an absolute yes, of course you can have a cart! it was let me send out 2 people to help you put it in your car! Well, it didn't fit... so they dropped it off at my parents house! Are you kidding me!? If this isn't GREAT customer service I don't know what is. This has been a staple of my childhood visiting my grandparents. I love walking in there and grabbing a cup a FREE coffee as I look through the aisles at the awesome selection of foods. Often what separates good supermarkets from bad ones are the meals they prepare themselves, and Sunset's meals are great. I love the soups--especially the chicken noodle and turkey chili. Once your rung up, if you have a lot of stuff you can have them load up your car themselves once you bring your car up to the front. Super convenient! read more

This is a locally owned grocery store that I am compelled to write about what with the all-stores-are chains pandemic. I like my Costco just like anyone else, but quo vadis, people, quo vadis? I shop in little and big places to balance it out, being the devoted comsumer I am. The place isn't a carnival like Whole Foods but has excellent gourmet sauces and condiments, a nice deli and a quality meat department . The piece de resistance is their produce department, where everything you purchase is weighed and priced by friendly men in jackets. Tradition! When you go to check out, they have people to unload your cart onto the conveyor belt. They ask if you want a number, and if you take it, you just need to pull up to the front of the store, and more friendly people load your purchases into your car. Who the hell does THAT anymore? I am SO shocked there is only one review from this place. And that person who reviewed it is spot on. The parking lot can be very hard to navigate through with the patrons confused, etc. With that said... Sunset Foods makes Whole Foods look like an atrocious nightmare. I was in complete awe and shock the first time I went to this market. They have a wide variety of typical American staple products mixed in with specialty items imported (mostly a Jewish flare). Prices are MUCH more reasonable than Whole Foods, and unlike the Whole Foods in Deerfield, they actually cater to the Jewish population. You will find a vast variety in their bakery, deli, and butcher stations that cater to the Kosher crowd. Most items are very reasonable with a few exceptions (mainly with seafood... there I would just go to Jewel-Osco for). If you don't care about kosher foods/Jewish specialty foods, if for one thing, over anything else, you would absolutely LOVE the salad bar. I believe it runs at $4.99 a pound vs. Whole Foods $7.99 a pound. Granted, they don't have open buffet trays of hot foods, but if you want a salad, $4.99 a pound is a bargain. The offer mixed greens, fruits, egg salads, tuna salads, condiments such as salsa, and I believe guacamole if I remember correctly. I will go there for lunch and get a massive (heavy on the greens) salad in one container, a smaller container of fresh watermelon/cantaloupe/honey dew/grapes/sliced apples, a side of dressing and it comes to 3.50 to 4 dollars, and I am STUFFED from the amount of food. The best perk? FREE COFFEE! And not a sample size, but a full coffee bar with real sized cups. When you check out, you have an employee greet you at the start of the conveyor belt of the cashier's line and THEY unload YOUR cart for you! When you are done purchasing your items, you are given the option of free valet service. Leave the cart of bagged groceries with them, go fetch your car, and pull up to the carport for packing. You never lift a finger. I hope that Sunset Foods branches out and takes over the country, because they do everything right, and customer service is top notch. You'll never be stranded in an isle wondering where a product is. If you look like you need help finding something, someone will be right there to assist. Best market on Earth. Go and enjoy. This location is the smallest of the Cortesi family's chain of upscale supermarkets. Aisles are tight, and the parking lot is small, having blind entrances and exits(Beware especially at peak times.) Excellent meat, fish, and deli. Favorites are the Italian coleslaw and Texas caviar bean salad for barbeque parties. The beef brisket is the most tender around. Love those boneless chicken breast fillets-thick enough that you feel you're eating something, but thin enough to cook quickly and stay moist. Great service and cleanliness, but not the cheapest place to shop for groceries. Watch the prices on what you pick up-on somethings, like shishkebabs, you'd be better off buying them elsewhere or making them yourself. read more
