Dr. Johannes and Dr. Stephanie are an amazing team. Dr. Stephanie has done a wonderful job taking…read morecare of our young daughter, and Dr. Johannes has shown that he is not only extraordinarily competent, but beautifully and refreshingly ethical. During my many decades as a patient of various dentists and orthodontists, I have repeatedly encountered professionals who would err on the side of an expensive procedure when a second opinion would suggest staying the course is a fine option. Dr. Johannes is a perfect example of a dentist who simply does the right thing. He and Dr. Stephanie are successful precisely because they are skilled, honest, and work hard to limit the amount of work that needs to be done. They clearly care about their clients, and they have built a successful practice the right way -- by carefully and diligently building trust. This was highlighted in a rather striking way recently. My wife came in believing that she needed to complete a significant amount of deferred dental work. Under Dr. Johannes' care, the scope of work continually decreased over the course of two appointments. He worked extremely hard to avoid additional crowns when another solution was viable. This saved us a significant amount of money (always appreciated), and more importantly, while my wife was used to a months-long recovery after having crowns put in by another dentist in the past, she has been delighted by the quality of Dr. Johannes' work and the speed of her recovery. Perhaps this is long-winded, but I just get excited about a pair of dentists who do great credit to the profession. And I can't help but contrast their approach (excellent work, but only what is necessary for the benefit of the patient) to the very different approach of a local orthodontist who actually engages in relentless "hard sell" tactics and leaves patients feeling pressured and embarrassed (as if their neighbors had just tried to sell them on the latest multi-level marketing scheme). Anyone with kids in Half Moon Bay knows who I am talking about. In any event, Dr. Johannes and Dr. Stephanie have elevated their care for their patients to the highest possible level while operating their practice with dignity and compassion. If you've read this far and you don't yet have a dentist, may I selfishly request that you look elsewhere. It can be hard to get an appointment, and I don't need any competition! On serious note, you couldn't do better than Dr. Johannes and Dr. Stephanie, and they've earned all of the success they have achieved.

A Considered Recommendation: Think Carefully Before Choosing Coastside Dentistry…read more If you're considering becoming a patient at Coastside Dentistry, I would recommend doing so with caution and careful consideration of your expectations--particularly around customer service and billing practices. My wife has been a patient there for decades, and we also brought our children to the practice until recently. While the dentists themselves have always come across as friendly and competent, our experience with the front office has consistently been disappointing. The administrative staff often communicate in a way that feels abrupt and dismissive, at times even condescending. On several occasions, I've observed interactions with patients that lacked the courtesy and professionalism one would expect in a healthcare setting. Despite this, my wife continued going to Coastside because of the convenience and her long-standing familiarity with the providers. That changed after she missed a single appointment--her first in many years--and was met with an unkind response and nearly charged a no-show fee, despite her loyal history with the practice. The tipping point came when we learned that, following a change in our insurance coverage, we would be reimbursed at a much lower rate than what the office charges. When I raised this concern, the reaction from the front office was indifferent, further confirming that it was time to move on. To be transparent, the practice has made a business decision to be out-of-network with all insurance providers, not just ours (Delta Dental, the largest dental insurer in California). While practices may choose this model to operate with greater autonomy, it generally results in higher out-of-pocket costs for patients. Unfortunately, this was our experience. For example, during our most recent visit, our two young children (ages 6 and 10) received routine cleanings and exams--basic preventive care. Despite having a high-tier dental insurance plan that typically covers 100% of these services, we were reimbursed for only 47% of what the practice charged. This level of cost misalignment, combined with the ongoing challenges with office staff, ultimately led us to seek dental care elsewhere. In short, Coastside Dentistry may be a fit for some--but it's important to go in with clear expectations regarding both service and billing. We've made the decision to move on, and I hope this review helps others make an informed choice.

This is a very well staffed and friendly office. I loved everything about being a patient here…read more Nancy is top notch when it comes to handling the front desk. She is professional, knowledgeable and patient. I also really enjoyed all the techs too. I'm soooo sad I forgot their names but I don't forget the experience. Each time I've gone in for a procedure or a cleaning it's been pleasant, efficient and everyone is so kind. Dr Moon is also very good at his job. He's been my favorite dentist. Im very sad I had to leave the practice because I moved out of state but I would recommend them to anyone looking for a new dentist. Thank you Dr Moon and team for keeping my teeth healthy!!

I am a former patient of Dr. Moon's. I had a work related accident which damaged many of my teeth…read more Over the course of 2 years, Dr Moon placed several crowns on chipped teeth and performed several root canals. His work only caused additional damage. The crowns he placed were ill fitting leading to decay which ultimatelyresulted in 2 root canals by a endodontist, the root canals he performed were poorly done and damaged the teeth beyond repair, requiring 3 extractions. I referred a friend to him before i realized the horrible work he does and Dr Moon insisted on doing a root canal on a tooth that was obviously fractured. Other dental professionals I have seen in order to fix Dr Moon work just shake their heads knowingly when i tell them who did the work. I have heard from community members he recommends much more treatment than is necessary and I have yet to hear anyone say anything positive about him. . This dentist does more damage than repair and then recommends additional treatment. It is almost as though he does the damage intentionally. His answer for everything is "root canal" which he told me is his favorite procedure to perform as a dentist - actually in general, dentists rately do root cabaks, and certaibly not complicated ones. People should see an endodontist, not a dentist, for a root canal! The final straw which wa before I realized all he did was more damage, was when the office manager tried to overcharge me a couple hundred dollars for a procedure saying that my insurance would only cover a certain percentage. I didnt pay the extra money and it turned out insurance reimbursed them as originally expected. Had i paid the extra hundreds, I seriously doubt dr. Moon's office would have returned the overpayment to me. He already was arrested for insurance fraud years ago and while he didnt lose his license, he paid heavy fines, had to do community service and had people audited his books regularly for years. Please please stay away.

I've been a patient at this office for a couple of years, which is why this experience was so…read moredisappointing. I was recently told I needed to see the oral surgeon, but the earliest appointment available was over a month away. When I explained that I was in pain, the response from the front desk was essentially that there was nothing they could do. There was no empathy, no attempt to help, and no referral to another oral surgeon who could see me sooner. Waiting over a month for someone experiencing dental pain is unacceptable. While I understand that specialists can have busy schedules, simply telling a patient to wait without offering any alternatives is poor patient care. After the call, I contacted another oral surgery office on my own. They were able to see me within two days and even offered a same-day treatment. That alone showed me there were other options that could have been suggested. What disappointed me the most wasn't the wait itself, but the complete lack of concern and communication. After being a loyal patient for years, I expected better. Unfortunately, this experience made it clear that once they couldn't accommodate me, they weren't interested in helping me find someone who could. I won't be returning and can't recommend this office based on how this situation was handled
