Dr. Johannes and Dr. Stephanie are an amazing team. Dr. Stephanie has done a wonderful job taking care of our young daughter, and Dr. Johannes has shown that he is not only extraordinarily competent, but beautifully and refreshingly ethical. During my many decades as a patient of various dentists and orthodontists, I have repeatedly encountered professionals who would err on the side of an expensive procedure when a second opinion would suggest staying the course is a fine option. Dr. Johannes is a perfect example of a dentist who simply does the right thing. He and Dr. Stephanie are successful precisely because they are skilled, honest, and work hard to limit the amount of work that needs to be done. They clearly care about their clients, and they have built a successful practice the right way -- by carefully and diligently building trust. This was highlighted in a rather striking way recently. My wife came in believing that she needed to complete a significant amount of deferred dental work. Under Dr. Johannes' care, the scope of work continually decreased over the course of two appointments. He worked extremely hard to avoid additional crowns when another solution was viable. This saved us a significant amount of money (always appreciated), and more importantly, while my wife was used to a months-long recovery after having crowns put in by another dentist in the past, she has been delighted by the quality of Dr. Johannes' work and the speed of her recovery. Perhaps this is long-winded, but I just get excited about a pair of dentists who do great credit to the profession. And I can't help but contrast their approach (excellent work, but only what is necessary for the benefit of the patient) to the very different approach of a local orthodontist who actually engages in relentless "hard sell" tactics and leaves patients feeling pressured and embarrassed (as if their neighbors had just tried to sell them on the latest multi-level marketing scheme). Anyone with kids in Half Moon Bay knows who I am talking about. In any event, Dr. Johannes and Dr. Stephanie have elevated their care for their patients to the highest possible level while operating their practice with dignity and compassion. If you've read this far and you don't yet have a dentist, may I selfishly request that you look elsewhere. It can be hard to get an appointment, and I don't need any competition! A Considered Recommendation: Think Carefully Before Choosing Coastside Dentistry If you're considering becoming a patient at Coastside Dentistry, I would recommend doing so with caution and careful consideration of your expectations--particularly around customer service and billing practices. My wife has been a patient there for decades, and we also brought our children to the practice until recently. While the dentists themselves have always come across as friendly and competent, our experience with the front office has consistently been disappointing. The administrative staff often communicate in a way that feels abrupt and dismissive, at times even condescending. On several occasions, I've observed interactions with patients that lacked the courtesy and professionalism one would expect in a healthcare setting. Despite this, my wife continued going to Coastside because of the convenience and her long-standing familiarity with the providers. That changed after she missed a single appointment--her first in many years--and was met with an unkind response and nearly charged a no-show fee, despite her loyal history with the practice. The tipping point came when we learned that, following a change in our insurance coverage, we would be reimbursed at a much lower rate than what the office charges. When I raised this concern, the reaction from the front office was indifferent, further confirming that it was time to move on. To be transparent, the practice has made a business decision to be out-of-network with all insurance providers, not just ours (Delta Dental, the largest dental insurer in California). While practices may choose this model to operate with greater autonomy, it generally results in higher out-of-pocket costs for patients. Unfortunately, this was our experience. For example, during our most recent visit, our two young children (ages 6 and 10) received routine cleanings and exams--basic preventive care. Despite having a high-tier dental insurance plan that typically covers 100% of these services, we were reimbursed for only 47% of what the practice charged. This level of cost misalignment, combined with the ongoing challenges with office staff, ultimately led us to seek dental care elsewhere. In short, Coastside Dentistry may be a fit for some--but it's important to go in with clear expectations regarding both service and billing. I just want to my first appointment with Coastside Dentistry and had Dr. Johannes Knueppel fixing my tooth by doing a very large filing on my broken tooth. I had the best experience ever, I felt no pain at all Wirh any shot, he was so patient, professional and caring doctor! Helped me replace several crowns and manage some complications that came up afterward (and their careful work preserved my new crowns). After a friend convinced me that teeth are important to eat, I decided I should start seeing a dentist more regularly so I could continue my love affair with food. Anyway, I don't think that will be a problem anymore after the wonderful service I received from Dr. Stephanie Knueppel and the rest of the Coastside Dentistry staff. My husband saw Dr. Johannes Knueppel at the same time, and he also had great things to say about him! We were greeted with a warm smile as soon as we walked in, and we didn't wait too long until someone called us to come to the back. I was helped by Denise, and she was really nice. I enjoyed talking to both her and Dr. Knueppel so much that I was disappointed when it was time for my cleaning (having fingers and dental tools in your mouth make it difficult to continue talking). The cleaning was quick and painless, and I really liked how I wasn't choking on my own spit (in my opinion the worst part of seeing the dentist). After the cleaning, Dr. Knueppel went over my x-rays,and it was a nice touch to view my own x-rays on the TV monitor right in front of the dental chair! I appreciated how she pointed stuff out on the x-ray and explained clearly what she saw so I could understand what was going on with my teeth. I usually hate getting the "you should floss more" lecture, but Dr. Knueppel never made me feel embarrassed, and it felt like she really cared about my health. Let me preface by saying I am a horrible patient for dentists. So, if you're anything like me and immediately get heart palpitations when you hear the word "dentist", this place is for you (and if you aren't like me, THIS PLACE IS FOR YOU). If I had to sum up my experiences with Coastside Dentistry in one word, it would be "EASY". Dr. Johannes Knueppel and his staff are INCREDIBLE and they always go the extra mile to accommodate your needs so that you are as comfortable and anxiety-free as possible when you're there. Dr. Knueppel and his staff are so warm and welcoming that I never feel like I'm just another patient, but a friend that they really care about. They also make sure you are well-informed of everything that is going on with your teeth, how they will treat your teeth, and how best to continue personal hygiene when you leave. This past year, I have had a lot done with my teeth and I have never had any pain or complaints. It's almost an art how good Dr. Knueppel is. I recently had a crown put in, and since day 1, I don't even notice it's there nor can I really recognize it even when I'm looking in a mirror. There was no complications or problems during the whole procedure. It was all stress-free and just plain easy. I highly recommend Coastside Dentistry! I fired my last dentist because she wielded her instruments like Tools of Torture. She was so rough that I literally could not eat for the rest of the day after a routine cleaning because she'd lambasticated my gums to hell and back. I resolved to find a new dentist close to home and settled Dr. Halterman. Her office accepts new patients and I was able to make an appointment relatively quickly. Her staff is very polite on the phone as well. The office is located on Main Street just south of downtown. It's easy to find. The waiting room is clean and inviting, and the staff is just as courteous in person as they are on the phone. Paperwork is minimal yet thorough so you won't be wasting a ton of time filling out multiple pages of redundant drivel. They accept many types of insurance and direct bill on your behalf. During my search for a new dentist, I was actually surprised by the number of places that still won't do this. Uhmm, really? In 2011? The equipment in the office is modern; the TV screen on which you can see your own X-rays is pretty rad. Dr. Halterman has a very gentle touch and not once did I have to claw-grip the armrests of my chair and go to my happy place. The cleaning was minimally uncomfortable and Dr. Halterman has a calm manner about her that put me at ease. She took the time to explain certain things to me that other dentists never have before, and it's evident that she believes in patient education instead of just doing the work and kicking you out. Two years later, still loving Dr. Johannes and Dr. Stephanie's practice. They added some cool entertainment for kids in the back room too with Playstation, toys, etc. I have seen the whole practice's team grow so much too. You really feel like an important patient when the whole staff feels like an extended family who remembers you and details you've chatted about in the past. They pay so much attention in preventive care of teeth which saves you a ton of money and discomfort in the long run. Dr. Johannes and Dr. Stephanie are always looking out for their patients. I was seeing a different dentist at the time who told me to see an oral surgeon for the removal of my wisdom teeth. Because he said my wisdom teeth are in a way that will cause a lot of issues for the neighboring molars. I then called around to see if I can get an appointment with the local oral surgeons but I got nothing within the month. A friend recommended me to see Dr. Johannes instead. He took some x-rays and examined the positions of my wisdom teeth. Confidently he told me he's able to remove them, I did not need to see an oral surgeon for this procedure. Dr. Johannes skillfully pulled out my wisdom teeth with minimal side effects and I recovered fully within a week. I was very impressed with his skills and bedside manners. I signed up for the company HMO dental plan. I received a list of local dentists. A quick check on the reputation of these dentists on Yelp convinced me that I had just made a big mistake--and open enrollment was several months away. In the interim, I decided to pay for a cleaning and searched for a highly-regarded local dentist. I chose Coastside Dentistry based on Heather K's review. This dental office has got to be as good as it gets. The experience was pain-free, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, the ambience was pleasant, and parking was free. I would like to expand on the "knowledgeable" staff. Clearly, the staff was well-trained and the dentist was experienced. But they exceeded my expectations when they shared their knowledge with me so that I knew in advance, for example, what that medical instrument emitting a strange drilling noise was before it entered my mouth. It wasn't a drill after all! This particular tool efficiently removes tartar from the tooth's surface by vibrating at 40,000 vibrations per second. It also sprayed water to irrigate the gum pocket and to keep the tooth from over-heating. Oh. Good. Carry on! In a word, recommended. Make it two words: Highly recommended. read more

Dr. Stephanie and Dr. Johannes have been such a blessing to our family! We've been with them for over 5 years. They have a wonderful team working with them! Everyone we have met has been so patient, professional and caring. Their team listened to every question and concern we've had about our teeth and our children's dental health. Our kids who are 2 and 3 actually love going to the dentist! They get to watch movies on the ceiling while getting their teeth worked on and they recieve little gift bags when they are done. Dr. Johannes Knuppel is by far the BEST dentist I have encountered (I've had my fair share of dentists!). I have had several appointments with him now (for different teeth) and I value his approach and his opinion. This dentist Dr. K is really, really conscientious. He goes over (i.e., shows and tells) what he thinks I should be doing, and why, in a very simple, easy-to-understand manner. That's partly because from (a) X-Ray-to (b) photographs with micro-cameras as they work on your teeth- to (c) showing you what they're talking about in consultation, EVERY image there there is digitized. In about 5 seconds. That is cutting edge technology, and means you can see with your own eyes, in real time, what he's talking about. More important, HE can see the images, enlarged, in real-time, as he works on your teeth. Have any of you experienced dentists who you feel are trying to sell you something? Well, that ain't him. Extra bonus: do you hate getting injections of pain-killer drugs before they turn on the drill? This guy is GREAT with a needle. I've never felt it going in, and I really, really, hate needles. read more

My children have been patients at this office since they were babies with Dr. Halterman. My oldest is almost ten now, and although I liked Dr. Halterman for my children, I was happy with my dentist in San Mateo and didn't see a need to change offices for myself or my husband. When Dr. Halterman retired a few years ago, a new dentist was introduced. Dr. Johannes Knuppel is excellent with both children and adults. When he mentioned that he also works on adults, I figured I would make the switch and save a trip over the hill. I liked the idea that one dentist sees my entire family. Upon my first check up and cleaning, which was entirely done by him personally (he said he always does the initial cleaning and check ups himself) I could tell I made the right choice in switching. He's thorough, knowledgable, and kind. My teeth looked great after he cleaned them and he's very gentle, which is a relief! My husband recently had an appointment with Dr J Knueppel at his new office in Half Moon Bay and loved it along with his staff!! The office is stunning and up to date with all the latest in technologies! His staff was great very professional!! Cory is awesome! Bent over backwards to get my husband in ASAP! Got my teeth cleaned and patched up some spots. Best service ever! All of the staff are super friendly and make you feel at ease. Dr. Johannes Knueppel showed me my x-ray pictures and walked me through what he sees and how he's going to do some patching, etc. which is nice because it shows how much he cares for his patients.
