I met some friends out at Emporium Arcade Bar one night and they were talking about how they just ate at Antique Taco. My friend was RAVING about the fish taco. After inevitably leaving my credit card at the bar that night (why wouldn't I forget about my credit card and tab?!?!) I had to drive back up the following day to get it. I'm pretty sure that was also God telling me that I needed some of those fish tacos in my life. I had a fish taco, a carnitas taco and some of the chili cheese tots. The tots I could care less about ... don't waste your time. The carnitas taco was super good. The fish taco though! Oh that fish taco is one of the best fish tacos EVER. I want to take one to bed with me and spoon until the sun comes up. When we left we stopped at the counter to get an horchata milkshake. We ended up standing at the counter waiting for it for about 15 minutes (which was longer than it took our food to come out the first time around). Once I finally got it I was a little shocked at the size of it. It was about 6o.z. and it was $4.00. It tasted great but it was very difficult for me to find the value in it. I probably would not order it again. The interior of the restaurant was really quite cute and laid back. It's got a very understated rustic/country vibe. I have it on my to-do list to get back there and have some rosemary margarita. They looked super delicious and were on all of the other tables when I was there. I'm pretty sure no matter what went wrong at the restaurant I would still be a return customer because the fish tacos are seriously THAT GOOD. The menu is small enough that I will have no problem trying everything on it after a couple visits and shared meals with friends. Honestly, definitely the best taco I've ever eaten. Now it's important to understand that these are not traditional Mexican tacos. They are slightly American-fied. We got the fish and pork tacos. I prefer the pork. I get it everytime I go but the fish taco wasn't that bad either. Whether it was better than big star.. I would say a tie. I've heard good things about this place so I was excited to come here. Sadly, that excitement quickly faded when I bit into my first taco. I've had tacos in Mexico and Texas so I think I know what a good taco taste like and I definitely didn't have a good taco at this place. The Grilled Ribeye taco was bland. The ribeye had no seasoning what so ever. It just seemed like they put the meat on the grill and then on the tortilla. My one friend agreed that the ribeye tasted like charcoal. This place has a great, open, clean and antique vibe to it and their tacos are no joke. I came here recently after my brother suggested I try Big Star. It was a review I read about Big Star that led me to Antique Taco and another that solidified it for me. It turned out my brother had been to Antique taco too, but it had been so long, he forgot how great they are. When posed with the dilemma of choosing between both Wicker Park options, I thought of the only option possible...BOTH! We started at Antique Taco and I knew ahead of time I really wanted to try their Crispy Fish taco which includes: Tempura, Sriracha Tartar Sauce, Smoked Cabbage, Scallions, and Sesame Seeds. Not only did this taco include a great sized fish filet, but all the flavors combined perfectly together. The smoked cabbage was unique and tasted great and the Sriracha Tartar sauce tied everything together. The fish was cooked perfectly and the batter was tasty and crisped to the right degree. The second taco we went for was their special which was the Lamb taco. I am so glad, my brother suggested we try this one because it was equally as delicious. In addition to the succulent, tender and juicy lamb, they also add cumin, roasted jalapeno & garlic, sweet potato crisp, mint yogurt and cilantro. The mint yogurt was incredible and married with the lamp so very well. The tortillas were awesome too and very likely made in house. While eating both tacos, my brother and I each had a few of those I can't talk right now, I'm in taco heaven moments which only happens when you have tacos worthy of transporting you to taco heaven. One thing I love about these tacos is that they are legit gourmet tacos (and without the gourmet price). There is an artistry to their design and execution and only the best ingredients are utilized. Tacos are so easy to put together and there are near limitless options one can include. But there are definitely varying degrees in excellence when making a taco. Between Big Star and Antique Taco, there is a stark difference in quality and passion that goes into each taco. Nothing against Big Star, I will go there again and grab a beer, but I will eat my tacos here first. On our way out, I recognized the owners from the website and got the chance to chat with them briefly. They were super nice and their "CEO" is adorable. After future visits, this could easily increase to 5 stars. As a girl, I think I enjoyed the cute decor of this place more than I enjoyed the food. I wanted to Pinterest EVERYTHING in the restaurant. The menu isn't huge but has a variety of good options. I'm surprised there aren't more different kinds of tacos. We ordered the chips and guac (pretty standard) and three different kinds of tacos (they come in pairs for around ~$8). The mushroom taco was surprisingly my favorite, the fish taco 2nd, and the carnitas surprisingly was my least favorite. I think the tacos were pretty good, but the fish taco and carnitas were kind of lacking in flavor punch. They were definitely not super memorable in my book, but still good. Five stars for the food, but the poor/overall lack of service has forced me to downgrade my review a star. I heard this place is supposed to rival Big Star, so I had to see that for myself. We came on a weeknight and the place was PACKED. We waited what felt like an eternity in line (probably more like 20 minutes, but still). We ordered our food at the counter, then we were seated. Well, someone pointed where to sit; there wasn't really a server assigned to us--just food runners. We had been worried about seating, so I was appreciative there was an actual system in place. They brought the horchata milkshake, which I loved. The banana really adds something special to it in a cool take on horchata. It could have used even more of that cinnamon. Then, we got our fried cheese curds. Cue drooling like Homer Simpson. These were just that good and an absolute MUST order, in my opinion. They were covered in a spicy-ish sauce, scallions, and tons of beef at the bottom. Drool. Finally, we got our tacos. Mine came a little after my girlfriend's, which was a little annoying, but fine. My beef tacos were delicious and did indeed surpass Big Star's, although I have to admit I was never really a Big Star fan to begin with. We ended our meal with a homemade poptart, which is nothing like real poptarts. Trust me, that's a good thing. It was a delicious pastry and also a must-order! Really, the food was amazing and completely worth all the hype it has been getting the past year. However, the service was disappointing and confusing. No one really brought us anything and it took a while to track down someone to bring us the poptart (they don't bring it out automatically because there's ice cream and they don't want it to melt). If they're expecting people to tip, then there actually needs to be some service to speak of. What we did receive wasn't at all attentive. I shouldn't have had to go all the way to the front and awkwardly stand around waiting for someone to acknowledge me to request having the pop-tart; if they were really serving us, they would have noticed we were ready. Thought it would be helpful to come here at 3pm on a Saturday to avoid standing in line...but nope, there was still a line. My bf and I had heard a lot about this place so we were hoping it would live up to its expectations -- I personally thought it did, but he didn't. I asked them what is the best selling taco's here and she told me the fish taco's. Well, then I told her to order me the fish, pork and chicken taco's (comes in a pair). The fish taco's was very tasty and not too doughy with just the right touch of red cabbage lettuce. The chicken had a fragrant oily curry tang to it and the pork is my favorite, it was like eating a slow smoked bbq brisket. So when Antique Taco surfaced, I was looking forward to trying it as an alternative for those days when you can't get near Big Star. Between the four of us, we tried all the tacos - mushroom, ribeye, pork, crispy fish, and chicken. All were excellent and I would order any of them again - although, surprisingly, my favorite was the mushroom. What I didn't like here was that the order size is 2 tacos - you can't order 3 or 1. Not that I couldn't force down another one if I had to! The menu board is nearly impossible to read/decipher. Its small lettering, poor positioning, bad script, and poor lighting made it very difficult. I had to actually ASK what it said. Not cool. First impression: Antique Taco is smaller and much more casual than I expected. I came here with high expectations for the tacos and a good deal of anticipation for the horchata milkshake. I appreciate the atmosphere and the little things that Antique has thought of. The food is good. Very solid. The tacos are substantial, definitely not wimpy or undersized. Unfortunately, it was an experience defined by "it was good, but ____" thoughts. The crispy fish taco was really flaky, but it needed a brighter component to balance the fried batter and smoked cabbage. The pork carnitas taco was tasty, especially topped with bacon and cheese, but similarly a little heavy. I would have preferred the spinach topping the carnitas taco to be fresh rather than cooked. The horchata milkshake was actually really delicious, I just tasted way more banana than horchata. Underwhelming and overrated. Service was fine, decor is cute and presentation is nice but based on what we had, (pulled pork empanada, fish tacos, & quart of strawberry agua fresca w/ vodka) I'm sorry but I'd rather go to Big Star. $40+ for the mentioned and we didn't leave impressed (or even really buzzed for that matter). I get that this place is more chill and more restaurant than bar but because of that, I'd expect a greater focus on the food and flavors which didn't seem to be the case with their mediocre empanada and bland "famed" fish tacos. The tacos had a good portion size fish and crispy batter but a bit too thick and too lacking in flavor. The intriguing "smoked" purple cabbage it was served with is unfortunately bland too and although it added texture to the taco, it didn't add any dimension flavor wise. Taco was saved by the sriracha tarter sauce which was good but nothing special IMO... Pretty sure it's just the sriracha that tastes awesome and makes everything else taste awesome too. An above average taco place in the city. Orders come with 2 tacos which make this a good spot for groups to share orders and try out different ones. I could make a meal out of just the creamed elote side and guacamole and chips! These were so tasty and delicious! My friend and I split the daily special Ribeye Chili Nachos ($9) and the Garlic Shrimp Tacos ($8 for 2). The little guy got a Kids Single Taco ($3) that was dressed very simply with just sliced beef, a wedge of avocado, and shredded cheese. The garlic shrimp tacos were wonderful! The shrimp were perfectly seasoned and cooked. I just hate overcooked shrimp, and these were not. The tacos were topped with chopped cauliflower and crispy kale, among other things. I wasn't sure I would like this, but all the flavors and textures worked surprisingly well together. I tasted a bit of meat from a carnitas taco (not too salty with a bit of sweetness), agua fresca (sorry, I'm not a fan of drinking cilantro juice), and horchata milkshake (very rich and delicious). Our friends enjoyed their Rosemary Margaritas - one order is enough for 2 glasses! I was looking forward to trying this place with another Elite out of state reviewer based on recommendations and Yelp reviews. I walked in and was disappointed that it's not waiter/waitress service. I walk up and order the Antique Taco Salad with the addition of Garlic Shrimp. My lunch company had the Horchata milkshake which she enjoyed hers. My salad was ok but much different from the taco salad that I'm used to. I think the salad was made with Kale. Seats are like wooden bar stools with no backs so not the most comfortable. I didn't get a warm atmosphere while here. Glad I came early as when I left, the line was long to order. Staff was very friendly. Chips and guac - nice-sized proportion; it was good but kinda bland; needs a little bit more cilantro and lime I think Fish tacos - my favorite! It was awesome! I will come back to AT for this! The hipster feel of the area is definitely present here and yet a kind staff, simple yet poignant menu, and stupidly good elote and shrimp tacos set this taco place apart from the rest in the area. It's a smaller space than most, but that adds to the intimate nature of the experience. You actually stop feeling like you're in chicago, because the environment and music and look lends itself to something not so urbane. I really enjoyed sitting further away from the Windows because that truly immersed me in rusticness of it all. The food is strictly delicious. The menu seems simple at glance, with about 20 items to munch on... And that's scary to me these days but this idea totally is executed with maximum effectiveness. The tacos cover meat and meatless aficionados, with a special shout out to the shrimp tacos and potato/poblano tacos. I haven't tried the other main items just yet but I will. I feel the sides are the weak point with no rice and beans but they more than made up up for with the best Elote I've had in Chicagoland. It was flavorful and rich and just made my mouth crave more. I'll have to write about drinks ate a later date because I am doing the sober thing this month :( I loved staff interactions. Having a love for the Chicagoan taco scene, I had to try Antique Taco. Located in Wicker Park, it's totally in the hub for hipster vibes and modern comfort food. Antique Taco stood out to me in that they try out a lot of cool flavor combinations and unique food that deviates from the standard tacos you will see on a menu. For example, their sweet and sour chicken taco or iron creek potato and poblano taco. They even have a horchata milkshake which I would definitely want to try next time! When you walk in, you order at the counter and then a waiter/waitress will bring your food to you. We ordered the chili cheese curds to start (fried cheese), which we mountainous and definitely require at least 3-4 people to finish, if not more! There were a TON of cheese curds. They were some of the best cheese curds I have ever eaten, too, just plain. They were sitting in a bowl of chili, which I thought drowned the fresh taste of the curds, but they also drizzle some guajillo cream and cilantro cream on it, which I did enjoy and thought added to the flavor. The taco orders come with 2, and you cannot mix and match tacos. that worked out okay, as the three of us shared the crispy fish, sweet and sour chicken, and garlic shrimp tacos. I'd say my favorite was the crispy fish, followed by the garlic shrimp and lastly the sweet and sour chicken. While the sweet and sour chicken had a blend of Greek flavors that was really unique in a taco, I thought it was overwhelming and too much for what should be a simple, yummy taco. The garlic shrimp was nice with the textures of the cauliflower and fresh shrimp playing off each other. The crispy fish was fantastic and more of a straight forward taco in my opinion. They put smoked cabbage and sriracha tartar sauce on it, which were delicious and perfect with the fish. Highly recommend getting the crispy fish! I'm giving Antique Taco 3 stars because I appreciate their uniqueness of flavors, the ambiance of the restaurant, and the risk they take with their menu, however, they were just a bit too wild for me, and with places like Big Star Taco just around the corner, I would much rather choose from a menu with my more trusty tacos. read more

This is a fun place to grab a few tacos and enjoy them on the benches and tables lining the side of the store. The inside is also nicely decorated. I love the picnic table napkins and serve yourself station that includes take out containers. So you order first before grabbing a table. Luckily we went early enough after work that there wasn't a line yet. We were greeted with a nice cashier who was patient with us while we contemplated the menu. She made great recommendations including how much food would be reasonable to order without being heifers (because I wanted to try most of the menu). Each taco order comes with two tacos. I tried their bestsellers Garlic Shrimp and the Pork Carnitas. Yum and Yum! The pork was soft and nicely seasoned. The shrimp was fresh with nicely contrasting textures of the crispy brussels and purple potatoes. My friend wasn't too impressed with the Sweet & Spicy Chicken, but it did remind him of spicy Indian chicken. The empanada was delicious. We shared an order of the Guac & Chips and the Habenero Popcorn. The popcorn definitely had a kick, but in a good way so even I liked it. I tried the Horchata, but was a little surprised by the banana. For some reason I was thinking of the Dulce De Leche Licuado at Big Star and was hoping to compare the two, but they're two completely different drinks. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in the Wicker Park neighborhood. While $7-$8 for 2 tacos doesn't seem worth it, the taco definitely is filling. I dream about this place. I crave the tacos, especially the potato and the shrimp, and also the margs. And I couldn't wait to take an out-of-town friend to experience the yumminess with me. Imagine my surprise when all of dreams went unfulfilled. The margaritas, which were always fresh and uniquely flavored, tasted like the chemically ones you get at every other Mexican restaurant. As an LA native, Antique Taco beats Big Star any day of the week. These are not authentic tacos, don't expect the worlds best mexican when you order. However, they are super scrumptious and creative, I love them and will keep coming back until I have taken all my friends to Antique Taco! The Pork Carnitas and Crispy Fish Tempura are my favorites, the Chicken Tinga and Ribeye are good but not amazing like the other two. If you have room for it, try the horchata milkshake - SO delicious. Besides the awesome food, this place appeals to my hippie senses with washable napkins/silverware and do-it-yourself water. I haven't been once yet where I haven't found a spot to eat, so kudos for having the right amount of vintage tables/eating areas. I would recommend bringing a friend, the tacos come in pairs and unless you're going to eat 8 or 10 tacos, you can't get to try everything and see what you like. read more

We came to antique taco because we are taco lovers and it had amazing reviews... so put two and two together and here we are at Antique Taco on a Saturday night around 9 pm (which was slammed). You first order at the register and then find a seat. Luckily we found an opening. From just looking at the place, we instantly liked it. The decor was super cool... and basically super wicker park-ish. (You know exactly what I mean). Now onto the food... don't get us wrong we LOVE tacos... especially shrimp. But interestingly enough, for some reason I ordered the chicken tacos. Now I want to point out that nowhere on the menu does it describe what is IN the tacos. We ordered sat down and the tacos were ready super fast. I got my chicken tacos and they looked good... until I took a bite. Bursts of curry exploded into my mouth and as soon as I took a bite my boyfriend looked at me and said, "You don't like it.... just go take it back". Unfortunately the chicken tacos have some spicy curry seasoning... and if you don't like curry then this isn't for you. Well I felt super bad but I told the guy at the register I really didn't like them and he was super nice and let me get three shrimp tacos instead. Now part two... I'm sitting here thinking, shrimp tacos have never disappointed me. Oh boy was I wrong. In my defense I've been to tons and tons of places that have tacos and NONE of them had some crazy shenanigans inside the taco... except for good ol Antique Taco. The shrimp tacos have fried kale and cauliflower with a bright yellow sauce (my boyfriend kept saying it was scrambled eggs ha). Antique taco takes something that can be really good and simple and just messed it up.. won't be back. read more

One of the places on my list to visit in Chicago. They don't disappoint. I first saw them at the food channel. I got the short ribs taco, shrimp taco, and the famous chilli cheese curd. They are on the fusion side, but they are good! I thought I won't be full but the tacos were actually huge! The cheese curd is so yummy!! read more

Whoa. Flavor explosion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great prices for this excellent food. I usually get the pork tacos and they are amazing. If you are a chicken, beef, or fish person--they also have you covered. My only "beef" is not having a fountain drink option and do drinks by the bottle. That's so nit-picky..... Great decor down to the cloth dishtowel napkins. You feel like you're at your family reunion in a park with the best food ever. read more

I used to love Antique Taco, but I just came in tonight and saw they raised their prices. When I asked the guy at the counter about it, he told me "they're now served as single tacos, so you can mix and match" like it was a deal. My girlfriend still ordered tacos, but the tortillas seem smaller than before and just not as good quality too... I'm disappointed, but there are plenty of other great taco places around that are more affordable. We won't be back. read more

We came here for some tacos and to beat the heat for a bit in the summer. On a weekend they were out of fish tacos which was disappointing. That would have been our first pick- so we went for the carnitas and chicken tacos instead (2 tacos per order) and chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and salsa was tasty. The chicken tacos I was not a fan of the spices reminded me more of Indian food but the carnitas were yummy and well balanced. Biggest complaints was paying $2.50 for an 8oz bottle of Diet Coke which was smaller but the same price as all the other sodas. The tap water you pour yourself was room temperature and the glasses were so SMALL which was annoying in the summer you're getting up to refill your glass 3-4 times. The air conditioning was also not cool enough. That plus the lack of water made our meal rather quick as it wasn't really a relaxing/comfortable environment. read more

First time at Antique Taco and already planning my next trip back! Started off with an order of Chips and Guac & Chili Cheese Curds both were on point. For our main dish we spilt an order Pork Carnitas tacos and the Grilled Ribeye tacos, the pineapple salsa served on the Ribeye make the taco but the Pork Carnitas was the winner over all. Looking forward to try the Duck Fat Flautas and the Crispy Fish Tacos. read more
