My brother-in-law took our crew down Logan Square looking for Mexican. After coming across many that were packed or loud, we chose Federales because it seemed to not be as busy on a Sunday afternoon. It turned out it was a great find though itnwas kind of weird being carded for a Mexican restaurant and them allowing my 14 year old in anyway. I went with the enchiladas and these were phenomenal! I loved the mild chili type sauce that smothered them to give them a smoky taste. Salsa was chunky and had a good flavor to it though it seemed like I was never given a lot. But I was able to eat as much as I want so it worked out. The best item I had though was the queso. Easily some of the best queso I've ever had with the creaminess and street corn in the middle to add to it. Unfortunately I wished they had a Horchata since that is my go to since it's so difficult to find sweet tea at a Mexican joint in the Midwest. Sunday brunch at Federales was a breeze. Had a reservation for four at 12:30, but we didn't need it as there was PLENTY of open seating. (I imagine that might not be the case as the weather warms.) Somehow we resisted the temptation of a Mimosa Tower and enjoyed an assortment of libations. They had Negra Modelo *on tap* which is one of my favorite things to enjoy at a Mexican-(American) restaurant. The complimentary chips and salsa were great - both aspects. Then the Breakfast Torta exceeded that! The telera roll makes the torta and it did in this case, but please don't sleep on the chorizo and everything else on the inside. We were in town for a week and loved Federales so much that we ended up going twice. The food, service, AND the vibe were fantastic each time. This was the first week of October, so it was still nice enough to sit outside. I guess on busier nights, there's a "bouncer" at the entrance, but we only ran into him once since our second visit was a Sunday just as the evening crowd was coming to life. The quality of the food is top notch. Both times we got the chicken taquitos and the smoked chicken quesadilla as apps. They're that good. The second night I had the brisket burrito and it was incredible. You know when you eat a burrito, if it's not well made some or most of it can end up on the plate? By the time I was done I had a single lone bean that had escaped and made its way onto my plate, that's how well this thing was made. Bonus points for incredible chips and salsa as well. Since this is more of a casual hangout type place, we weren't expecting the over the top, overbearing service that comes with a lot of "fancier" restaurants, but were still very well looked after by friendly servers both nights. This was definitely the sort of experience an out of towner has that makes them anxious to go back if they're ever in town again. And we had such a great time that we definitely will. read more

My boyfriend and I recently dined here, and overall, it was a solid experience with a few areas for improvement. The carnitas tacos were amazing -- flavorful, tender, and perfectly portioned. I ordered the carnitas with rice and beans, and two tacos were more than enough for me. My boyfriend ordered the ribeye tacos with rice and beans, and he really enjoyed his meal as well. The food was definitely the highlight of the evening. The vibe was nice and cozy. It was just the two of us, so our table space was a little tight, but it worked. The music was a cool mix of pop and Hispanic music, which created a fun atmosphere. We were greeted warmly by the African American woman at the front, and her customer service was excellent. She was welcoming and professional, and we appreciated that. I also enjoyed my drink; however, I do think the margarita menu could be expanded. The frozen margarita options were limited to tequila rosé and blood orange. It would be great to see more traditional flavors like strawberry, mango, or peach added to the menu. Unfortunately, our waitress, Elena, was the only downside of the evening. There were long gaps in service, sometimes 20-30 minutes at a time without check-ins. At one point, we had to look around for her, and she appeared to be in conversation rather than attending to tables. Even processing payment took an unusually long time. Consistent communication, even a quick "I'll be right back," would have made a big difference. We had a bored/rude "bouncer" at the door but the rest of our experience was really good. Our server was the highlight of the experience - she checked in on us the right amount. Our food was amazing - especially the nachos and queso we ordered at the start. I wasn't expecting my old fashioned to be served over a bunch of small ice cubes - that's just not how it's ever served but once I pulled all the ice out (2/3rds of the glass), the cocktail itself was nice. We've been to this place several times and I've yet to review it. My wife and I came here to grab drink after a particularly hard week of work. We come for the drinks.... always the drinks. They have a huge patio that's great for people watching and a large bar with seating around the perimeter. Like the west loop location there is also the tequila bell outside on the patio. The service has always been pretty good. Our server on this night was very attentive despite having to serve a lot of tables on the patio. I ordered the burrito which was decent and my wife ordered the fajitas which she really enjoyed. The queso is always bomb! Pleasantly surprised by the food and drinks way better than I expected it to be . We were running late for our reservations and called to let them Know . And they assured us it will be ok. The chips and salsas total bomb, the kick of spice cleared up my sinuses. I wanted to know if they sell the salsa and our sweet server Zain brought some in a box to go. We had the queso blanco, I got the spicy chicken and shrimp tacos , and hubby got 2 chicken and one mahi mahi , pork and pineapple. They have decent Vegan and vegetarian options as well. Came here yesterday for brunch and it turned into a fantastic Sunday Funday! The weather was perfect so we sat on the patio. Arrived around 130pm and there was plenty of space. As the afternoon went on, it did get busier but still not packed. Our waitress was patient, informative, attentive, all you could ask for in a server. I ordered the blood orange margarita and the raspberry margarita. Raspberry was a bit too sweet but the blood orange was very tasty! For food I kept going back and forth between the brunch and lunch/dinner menus. I ended going with tacos and rice. Ordered the carne asada, chorizo, and also a carnitas tacos. I enjoyed all of them as well as the rice. My boyfriend ordered the steak and eggs off the brunch menu and it was delish!!! Before we left we had to try and ring the bell...how fun! PEPPERMINT CHURROS AND RING THE BELL SHOTS!!!! I would've enjoyed my visit to Federales with just those two things alone, but I definitely indulged in much more. For started the Ring The Bell shots are super fun. Your liquor of choice is served in a frozen shot glass and after you do your shot by the bell, you have to hurl your shot glass to the bell in an attempt to hit it and make it ring. I failed miserably as you see in the video. The PEPPERMINT CHURROS? EXCELLENT! I'm a huge lover of churros already, but the way they have that peppermint mousse on top of the chocolate ganache (which is STRONG but mixes well with everything together), paired with churros that have candy sugar on them?! Delish! AND their churros are made IN HOUSE, with a cake flour My salsa, chicken taquitos, quesadilla and queso fundido were all scrumptious! And the tacos?! I wish I had room to try more; the cod and "steak" were both seasoned well and I wish I could've tasted the crispy potato and baja taco (made with mahi mahi). First time at Federales after it being a place I wanted to go to years, but it always slips my mind. At least the West Loop location. Tried going there, but they were completely full for the night and I needed a table for 5. So we get there and it's all open air on a day where it was high 60's, so kinda chilly. Kids I was with weren't prepared so they were cold the whole time. The place probably needs a few more heaters in this weather. But starting out you get chips and salsa, which were great. Really loved the tang of the fresh tomatoes of the salsa. Chips were nice and super-crispy. Not too oily or thick. We also ordered some guac, which was fine. Also in apps, we got the brussel sprouts and that was so good. Probably the highlight of the night. Boom boom flavor and fresh. One of the top brussel sprouts I had in terms of flavor. Could've been a little more crispy to be perfect. Then the mains. So they accomdated vegetarian dietary needs and made the enchilada veggie. It comes with a rich red sauce, so that was pretty good. The tacos were hot or miss, but I love that they had 4 vegetarian options. So the jackfruit and the potato tacos were pretty good. The two fake meat tacos were kind of meh. Probably, cuz it's not a texture that I'm going after, but since they had the 4 options we decided to try a bit of each. The non asada was better than the fake chorizo. I met my friend and her child at Federales and at first we weren't sure it was going to be the right place--it seemed like a party place, loud music and whatnot. But they had some spaces further back in the outdoor space and that's where we wanted to sit anyway. And they had booster seats, too, so definitely kid friendly. The salsa is delicious. I wish I could get it just to have at home. It had a little heat and some texture; I think I prefer chunky salsa. I got the taquitos and they were really good. We also got some guacamole, a favorite with the kiddos, and the Brussels sprouts, a favorite with me. (Haha.) Margaritas were great--and they didn't skimp on the alcohol. All the food was great, but it was too pricey for me to probably come back very often. read more

My lovely wife and I have wandered past Federales before, and it struck us as a fun place to check out one of these days. This location is on Milwaukee and Sacramento, with its corner offering significant space for a lively outdoor patio. Thanks to a can't-beat-that promotion where weekend brunch food items are priced half-off (11AM to 1PM) through August, we stopped in on a warm Saturday to try out Federales Logan Square. We actually made a reservation for noon yesterday, but we were seated immediately though we arrived a few minutes early. We chose to sit indoors next to the cool mural on the wall, as it was quite warm outside. Service was good throughout our meal, starting with ice water and a tasty serving of complimentary chips and salsa. Our friendly server was well aware of the half-off brunch food deal, so there was no need to haggle over promotional pricing. I went "dessert first" and ordered the Flan French Toast, with a generous dollop of whipped cream. It was certainly sweet enough, and it tasted like a yummy combination of desserts - flan, creme brulee, bread pudding. It's definitely a unique spin on French Toast. My love ordered the Chilaquiles with the red salsa on the side, and the salsa was quite zingy so that was a good move for her. She enjoyed a glass of iced coffee as her "dessert" item. read more

Replacing our iconic neighborhood pizza joint at this location, I was slow to try it out. However, the outdoor patio is inviting, and the menu looked good for vegetarian selections. We ate inside, and it's definitely got a sports bar vibe with the many large tv's, open room, and almost too loud music. The service could have been better and more attentive, with the waitress seemingly in a rush. The comped seasoned chips were a nice surprise, and the chunky salsa was fresh. The queso blanco was a tasty starter, with a nice roasted corn garnish. (A good deal @ $8 during happy hour.) My daughter and I really enjoyed the frozen fresh raspberry margaritas. We both loved the vegetarian tacos; chorizo, crispy, potato, and non-Carne Asada. The later shockingly like the real thing, grilled with a nice char. The vibe is very upbeat, and while the brunch menu does not feature too many options, they have a nice selection. Our server could not have been more lovely and attentive. We loved the Chicago-themed mural! I went with the chilaquiles, and, out of caution, I had them put the sauce on the side because I'm a total spice wimp. I did not use much of it, as it is rather spicy to me. But even eating the dish in a non-traditional way, I liked it a lot. We received complimentary chips and salsa. Chips were warm, and the veggies in the salsa were just so great. They tasted fresh and were crisp. Sadly, being the spice wimp I am, I couldn't eat a lot of it, but I sure wanted to because I have never tasted a better complimentary salsa when it comes to the quality of the vegetables. Super fun spot! Us Chicagoans know the classic Federales in West Loop; I was so happy to hear they opened up another location in Logan Square! I haven't had the best experiences at their West Loop location, but I do really like this Logan Square location. The staff here is friendly, all the way from their security to their bartenders. Their drinks, especially margaritas, are refreshing and strong. Their food is surprisingly really delicious for bar food. This is an all around place in my opinion - you can go and get food here during the day, then also come back at night to dance, party, and drink. They have an outdoor patio that'll open once it gets warmer. And yes, they also have the bell where you can throw your ice shot at after you're done taking it. Pricing here is affordable in my opinion; it was $12 for their margaritas which I think is pretty standard Chicago cocktail pricing, if not a little less than standard. If you're looking for tacos in Logan Square, do yourself a favor and walk into literally any other Mexican restaurant. Even the Taco Bell Cantina would be a better choice than this place. I came here with a group of 10 to celebrate a birthday, and from the moment we sat down, it was clear we made a mistake. It took 30 minutes just for a server to acknowledge our existence and take drink orders. Then another 30-40 minutes passed before she returned to take our food order. We were there for two hours, and she stopped by our table exactly twice. When a few friends arrived late, I told them to just order at the bar because it was obvious that would be faster than waiting for table service that may or may not happen. The margaritas? $14 each and aggressively mediocre. I found out from other reviews that they pre-make them in batches, and it shows. For $14, I would expect something good, not something that tastes like it was poured from a plastic jug behind the counter. On the rare occasion our server did appear, she acted personally inconvenienced by the concept of serving customers. There was zero effort and zero hospitality. Now onto the worst part of the night. When the bill arrived, there was an extra margarita listed. So we tried to ask our server about it. Instead of double-checking or clarifying anything, the server immediately told us we were wrong, cut us off mid-sentence, and treated us like we were trying to pull off some elaborate scam over one bland margarita. After a tense back-and-forth, she basically said, "Fine, I'll take it off," and abruptly walked away. But wait, it gets worse. The manager then comes over to our table and is immediately argumentative with us about the one margarita. He doubled down and informed us that the server had also accused us of cussing her out, which absolutely did not happen. We had just spent around $300 and were disputing a single $14 charge. No one raised their voice. No one said anything inappropriate. We just wanted an explanation. Instead, we were met with hostility and bizarre accusations. After reading other one-star reviews, it seems this place has a pattern of blaming customers for their own mistakes. I've never felt gaslit over tacos before, but there's a first time for everything. Save yourself the frustration. Milwaukee has plenty of Mexican restaurants, pick literally any of them instead. read more

We didn't have reservations, but they were able to seat us indoors pretty quickly. The decor inside and outside is impressive. Everything about this spot was awesome! We found parking right outside the restaurant on a Saturday. The food was delicious, the drinks were refreshing, even the music was popping. The seasoned tortillas and salsa were so addicting! Recently stopped by to experience brunch again and was very happy! The brunch menu has got a little bit for everyone and is fairly priced. This time around I tried a drink off of the regular menu- Cadillac Margarita and it was . I was feeling pretty hungry so I was debating between the burrito and torta and ended up choosing the toroad. When I requested chorizo removal to make it veg friendly, our server informed me that I could swap it for a plant based option at no additional cost. I chose the carne asada option. The plant based steak tips were well seasoned and seared well. Overall the torta was fantastic- the jalapenos lent a nice spice, the cheese skirt was nice and crispy, and I loved that the roll was nicely buttered. I look forward to future visits! read more

I have only ordered door dash here. I have tried a few of the tacos and the brisket burrito. Some of their tacos do not taste like authentic Mexican food. I'd recommend sticking to the steak taco and fish tacos (blackened or battered). Even though those were the most authentic items, they tasted just okay. Most of the tacos I've had here use flour tortilla. To me, it tasted like what you would get at a grocery store. I also have tried their burrito and did not care for it at all. The filling was like 80% rice. The brisket meat tasted too sweet, which really throws off the flavors of the burrito. I was expecting more of a savory, smoky flavor. No salsa or guac was added to the burrito so it was very dry and lacked complex flavor development. Overall, average tasting food, but it didn't hit the spot. read more

Nice spot. Probably good to have a drink here. But the food is overpriced. Just had brunch and ordered the steak and egg tacos. Steak was tasty but they put a really weird sauce on it that ruined it. Additionally, it was $14 for 2 tiny tacos. Look at my photo. The tacos are smaller than my palm. I do have big hands, but not that big (I'm 6'3). If my daughter hadn't thought her tacos were gross and given them to me, I'd still be really hungry and would have needed a 2nd order. I will give the place another try, but this was not a good start.
