The horchata was horrible, so bad that I couldn't drink it. I ended up having water in a dirty cup. All these ladies had an attitude! I saw tilapia floating on a white bucket on the floor, looking like they were dead. Have been here twice, this is the most authentic place in NEW YORK for Mexican food. As a native Mexican I have been searching hard, and I found it. My favorite meal was the breakfast, got huevo con chorizo it came with brands and rice, fresh corn tortillas, everything was perfect. I came back! I walked into the Antojitos at 11:30am and ordered the whole fried fish. For $10, i got a huge plate of rice and avocado salad with a beautifully fried fish. Eating the fish takes some finesse. It has bones in it. I went at it like a lady and used my fork. When i succeeded by eating Most of the meat, boyfriend used his hands to free all the good meat i left hanging onto the bones. So, use your hands. The fish is fresh. This is by far the worse Mexican food I've ever tried. I decided to give this place a try since I live close by. I was excited to order my nachos de carnitas as I always purchase this from a usual spot I go to on Montrose. My sister ordered the Quesadilla and tostada. I was excited to head home and dig in. To my surprise the nachos were huge so I was ready to chow down! My first bite I was very disappointed. The pork was hard and in chunks rather than it being shredded. The cheese was powdered cheese and not actual cheese shreds. I took another bite attempting to not throw away my $8 nachos and waste my money and still wasn't satisfied. I hear my sister in the other room telling me how bland her quesadilla was and how awful the tostada was. We swapped food to try it and it was absolutely not worth it. This is one of my most favorite Mexican restaurants in New York City. It's a family run business, the staff is very sweet, however occasionally there is a little bit of a language barrier, however if you know what you want to eat and you see it on the menu it's easy to get what you seek. I find ingredients to be top notch, the flavor is authentic, and the salsa is nice and spicy. I love the flautas which are made with chicken breast and fried perfectly. Hot Tamale! Thats right. I'm addicted to their tamales. The mole being my favorite. Whenever there is nothing left to eat for breakfast on the weekends I get me some tamales. Finally! Authentic, local and cheap Mexican that I've been craving, and only a 10-min walk from mi casa... This morning I was considering going to ihop, (don't judge me. It's their red velvet pancakes that have the allure) BUT my desire to patronize more local businesses, rather than feed the corporate machine that is "ihop" & co won out. That & the fact that I was really craving huevos rancheros. Yelp to the rescue! I discovered Antojitos after typing in "huevos rancheros" & my zip, and voila! With lots of decent reviews, too. So of course I'm adding my 2 cents in... I am delighted that we went. I'm stuffed like a tick in deer season. The humongous plate was only $5 as advertised, and pretty tasty. I had to add a good measure of the green sauce to get more flavor, but all said, great value. Also tried something new: a "mamey" shake. (note: it has been my experience that "milkshakes" in Mexican restaurants here are heavy on the "milk", light or zero on the "ice cream"). They are called "licuados", the server called it a "milkshake". It is not, at least not in the American sense of the word. But... I like them cuz they're a lot more refreshing than your typical milkshake. Googled "mamey" & it was described as "a fruit native to Central America, that is salmon in color, and tastes like pumpkin, sweet potato, and maraschino cherries". WHAT? I immediately recognized the synesthesia at work, read: It tastes like cherries! It LOOKS like the other two things, which also happen to be orange. Duh! Anyway, it was muy delicioso! And tasted like cherries. My only complaint is this: when I order a $5 plate of huevos rancheros, and it only comes with 5 tortilla chips, and I ask for "a few more chips", you should tell me before charging me $2 for extra tortilla chips! I guess I got spoiled living in TX where free chips & salsa are standard fare at ALL restaurants, Mexican or not! Anyway, I was surprised to see the $2 extra charge for tortilla chips. I probably would have ordered them anyway, cuz the food was so cheap, but at least give me a heads-up AS I'm ordering, not just like "surprise!" on the bill (it is not listed as a menu item, btw). Bill ended up being about $19, but that's for 2 people, each with a $5 plate & a $3 "licuado", plus coffee for one. Oh, and the $2 chips. Still gave a decent tip (as always...I strongly believe that if you don't have the $ to tip well, you really have no business eating out. I've heard good things in other places about the tripe stews and other delicacies that require ingesting large amounts of boiled organs. I'm sorry I can't file a report on the relative merits of those dishes, as I'm a wimp. Instead, I've eaten a couple tacos from here, regular ole' carnitas and a meat quesadilla. They were fine, although contrary to popular belief fine isn't acceptable in Brooklyn these days. New Mexico three blocks up is working with better ingredients and a better sense of balanced flavors. A nearby bodega beats these tacos with a very simple arrangement. The fast-casual market is being served by OMG Taco, Blkyn Burro and La Gringa. The atmosphere is depressingly downmarket with a wide-open dining room adorned with plastic Mexican-esque tchotchkes that came via Mercado de Guangdong. The prices are cheaper here than the competition, but with the arrival of better places both above and below the establishment, it's hard to see this making into any kind of regular rotation. read more

Paired with an ice-cold Tamarindo, I'm as good as back in the sleepy southern California surf town from whence I sprang. Patrons and staff are generally Spanish-speakers, so polish up your high school Spanish or be prepared for a lot of gesturing and pointing. Fear not, gringos, the menu has pictures. So my mother ordered a delivery and was told by the restaurant it would be 40 minutes. So she was on her way home and she received a call from the delivery man and he said he was here she said she was 2-3 minutes away if he could please wait; he rudely yelled at her a 58 year old woman that why the hell she would order food and not even be there to pick it up, yelling about how she's wasting her time. My mother reminded him he arrived before the delivery time and that she was only a block and a half away ( she was with my 11 month old niece). Well she arrived for the delivery and the dude threw the food at her and the Spicy Salsas fell out on-top of her and got into her eye ! She went to the restaurant and they said they would take "Disciplinary actions" towards him and she said he deserves to get FIRED! He flat out assaulted her ! I use to come with my whole family of 12+ on the weekends great service great food. I went yesterday I was waiting for someone so why not a milkshake to start. It took 15 min for that shake. Then I ordered a beef tostada which was good also took a while though when my friend came we ordered a torta de milanesa de pollo it took over 20 mins. So we ordered a side guacamole with chips. I had to go to the counter to ask for some sour cream because they were barley around and she wanted to charge me 3$ for that like really for sour cream I didn't want a whole bottle. Anyway A lady that came to order take out got her food first. There was only 4 tables max. I get it it's busy but come one two girls and that's how slow and unattended. They also had a problem with the table in front of us. We needed to leave and of course no one was around so I went took my plate up so they can set it up to go. And I asked for the check went back to my table she came back with my food and said I forgot your check. She was doing other things rather then bringing my check I just added what I order and left the money on the table. Bad service food took long. And me and my friend got stomach aches right after there. Maybe in the weekends they have better cooks and service. But I doubt I'll be going back here for a while. Antojitos means little plates or snacks, and this is mostly what they serve here. The huraches are fantastic, as are the tacos. The horchata was tasty and not too sweet, like some cloying versions I've had elsewhere.
