Such a cool historical building for a restaurant. It is small, so some days there could be a wait. We were lucky enough to be seated right away. The menu has a good variety. Everyone was ordering the onion rings for an appetizer, which were recommended by my aunt and they were hot, crispy, and delicious. I really liked the sauce that was on each table. The bacon cheese burger was cooked perfectly. My friend had a slice of pie and ate every bit, so I'm guessing it was very tasty. We had a great experience and I would definitely return. read more

I've been coming to the Anvil since I can remember! It's an absolute must if you're in the area! They have the best onion rings and super comforting food! I had the chili and it was spiced just right, very smokey. Their onion rings are light and flaky, everything you'd want in an onion ring. The old wood floor and brick add to the warm ambiance of the Anvil. The staff is very friendly and helpful with suggestions if you need them. Parking was in the street we managed to get close but should you have to park a little bit away there are all kinds of fun local shops to see on your way. It's is a great experience, loved the look of the place it had a full crowd and by the looks it stays busy, even though they had a crowd service was quick , professional and answered our questions. Casual American bar and restaurant inside of an old building in St. Genevieve. The inside of the restaurant has a cool old school saloon vibe to it, and the servers are very friendly as well. They have a list of the foods they are known for on the front page of their menu, so I had an easy time choosing what to order. My friend and I split an onion ring appetizer and I got a cheeseburger for myself. The onion rings came in a huge portion and they were fantastic. They also had a house made dipping sauce for the rings. I think they made all of their dips in-house, as my friend asked for a BBQ sauce and he thought it was house made as well. Each table has 2 house-made sauces on them as well. The burger was not as good as the onion rings, as it was very overcooked and dry. It did have some great sauces that came on the bun however, plus the bun was toasted and it came with fresh veggies as well. I went in at 4:30pm on a Wednesday for dinner. There was 1 person at the bar and 1 table occupied by 2 people. I was asked if I wanted to sit at the bar. I said I'd prefer a table. I was pointed to two undesirable two top tables. I asked if I could sit at the four top against the wall and was told they like to keep those for four people. I finished my food and was gone within 40 minutes. I could have sat at the table and not displaced any other patrons. When I left, there were 2 different occupied tables and the guy was still at the bar. Very unaccommodating. I ordered the grilled chicken breast, smothered with a baked potato and steamed broccoli. The food was good. If the girl working the bar had been accommodating, I would return. If you're not dining solo, you might get treated better. read more

When paying the bill, waitress was pretty flippant when I asked why the total bill with tax didn't match the receipt. "Oh, our computer adds a tax.". BS!!! My husband, father-in-law had a late lunch here yesterday. At 1:30 on a Wednesday it was pretty busy but the bartender found us a table up a few stairs overlooking the main dining area. Both he & the waitress were very friendly & attentive with quick service. The onion rings were light & delicious, not greasy. The batter stayed on them well. They have their own mayo, horseradish, mustard sauce for them. We all ordered fried chicken. The fried chicken is great. One of the sides available is a local tradition, beef liver dumplings served with beef gravy. My mom is from Ste. Genevieve & made those for Thanksgiving and other special occasions; I've made them, too. These were really good! So fun to get to have these again without the work! The Anvil has a wonderful historic & warm atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable. read more

I was told this place is famous for their Bloody Marys, onion rings and liver dumplin's. I tasted two out of three, sorry liver does not cross these lips. A group of 24 arrived, we had a reservation. We were upstairs, and we had three servers taking care of our two tables.... WONDERFUL SERVICE. The Bloody Mary was delightful, just the right amount of bloody and mary. We got the onions rings as an appetizer, trust me this is the way to eat them. We have two plates at our table and it was plenty. They also have a secret sauce on the table to accompany them. We were trying to dissects the sauce, we tasted horse radish, sour cream, garlic and a few other things.. I had the mushroom burger and fries. It was heavenly, the crust on the burger was slightly charred ( I love that on a burger). Mushrooms, sauce and cheese was found in every bite. It was just the right amount of messy. As soon as I saw that Jenny and Dave gave the Anvil positive remarks, I knew it was going to be an okay dinner spot while in Saint Gen. Talk about a seriously cool local spot! If you need to eat dinner after a day at the wineries, this is your place. Onion rings yes... All of the other yelpers are right on. They are so perfectly done and the seasoning is just flavorful enough! A small order is definitely enough for four people or less.... A large is good for a big table. I definitely recommend sitting at the bar because Holiday is awesome! As far as the food goes, the French dip is pretty flavorless but I can vouch for the friend chicken. Ummm... Delicious. Yup. Trust. One thing I'll never understand is the weird clown decorations in there. Clowns everywhere... What the hell? Otherwise, just look out for the strong drinks and you'll be good to go! If I were to take someone to visit one building in Sainte Gen that helps define this place this would be it. (others might be better, but not always open) Old building with interesting interior features. (I am not sure from what era and this city has history) The furniture is big and heavy. The bar runs the downstairs room all the way down on the right. Order the onion rings and share them (nice snack for about 4 adults) and then decide what to eat. The food is closer to deep fried country/southern comfort food, but usually very good. read more

This is a very old bar/grill in historical Ste Genevieve, across the street from the county courthouse in the town square. It's got a great old time atmosphere, and yes, the onion rings are very good. The rest of the food is run of the mill bar food and is quite frankly overpriced. I rode my motorcycle down to Nashville from Chicago (yes, I took the long way). Anyway I did not reserve a hotel and there was no cellular service. Out of desperation I stumbled on the Anvil. This bar/pub has been operating since the 1850s. Now, this place has good fare and nice wait staff. I sat at the bar and ordered the fried ravioli and a salad -and a beer. Here comes Nicki! She got me WiFi with a smile so I could Skype and post. She got me up to date on the town. Then I had to have the cobbler and coffee. Overall this was the right place at the right time.
