LOVE this gym…read more Clean. New. Bright. Vibrant. Very updated space. Locker rooms are nice, feels extremely high-end for a gym. Classes are great - Yoga, Zumba, and Step are favorites. Decent schedule and variety. All instructors are great. Offers once a week free Zumba to check-out the gym. Separate room for women-only workouts, which is a nice option. Staff is friendly and accommodating. They are always looking to improve. A little pricier than other gyms in the area - if you aren't going to attend any classes, I am not sure if the added expense would be worth it. But if you like gym classes at all.... ABSOLUTELY worth checking out.

I think my favorite part about this gym is the excellent temperature control. Nothing's worse than a room temperature gym. All of the rooms for classes (each class has it's own room because the place is HUGE) are decorated, classy, and properly cooled. They have smaller sized changing room then is normal for most gyms, but it does have two showers, two bathrooms, and two sinks. Lockers and towels are free. There are plenty of machines, a room for women only, and from what I've seen it's never been too busy. 426 looks like a big warehouse, but they've done a really nice job with it. The manager, Paul, is also very nice - you can get a free 3 day pass to try out the gym and there are a ton of different priced membership/qasi-membership options depending on what you want to use the gym for. They have a parking lot off of Rosa street, with plenty of parking.

One of the lifeguards constantly crossed personal boundaries and eventually called me an alcoholic because I did not accept his unsolicited medical advice. The aquatics director and CEO made me stand in his office despite me telling the CEO that I cannot stand or sit for an extended period due to chronic pain and my disability, and while making me stand and listen to him repeat everything he said over email, they both basically took the side of the lifeguard, suggesting without asking the offensive party that the lifeguard was "joking" and I was more or less holding a grudge. They even suggested that the Bayside pool wasn't the right pool for me because I was offended by being called an alcoholic by this lifeguard. They never asked the lifeguard to apologize to me after I requested an apology. I do not feel respected at this YMCA branch. Another issue is the staff don't tell you that there's an additional annual fee on top of the regular monthly fee and joiner's fee until after you've joined. I reached out to the same CEO and membership director about this issue, and have been met with silence for over a month. But when they didn't like that I complained about a lifeguard slandering me and his continued foul mannerisms towards me, the CEO wouldn't leave me alone constantly emailing me and demanding I go into his office when I asked for a phone call to accommodate my disability to address the issue.

Their family membership is an excellent value when you take into consideration the complementary child care. Their pool and locker facilities were recently renovated and are very nice. The YMCA offers a wide variety of classes, and although the selection might not be as robust as other facilities, I have enjoyed them. The cardio/weights room, where I spend a lot of time has been updated with brand new equipment and is well managed - there are typically available cardio machines in the busy morning hours. This Y is also located next to the East Bay Bike Path - so one can easily bike here, and go out running during or after a visit. Bottom line a good value, a good facility for the area.

I came to her at my heaviest weight, unconfident and feeling the worst about my body. I knew I needed a change! Over the past year she has kicked my butt and whipped me into shape! She started off slow and kept building and building every week. Each week I was amazed at things I could do so much better than the week before. She pushes you through even when you want to give up because she sees the potential in someone and she won't give up on you! She has not only helped me lose 30lbs and change my body in so many ways but she has also given me so much self confidence and made me feel so strong. I never thought I would look at a progress photo and see what I see. I still have lots more work to do but I can't imagine doing it with anyone else. One last thing- if you are overweight like me starting a fitness journey can seem impossible and I understand that totally but anything you think that you CANT do, Karen will show you that you CAN. I never thought I could do what I do and I could've never done it on my own. Do not be intimidated and mislead at a big box gym, come see Karen! You will not regret it!

Like a lot of people we used to be super fit, but found ourselves entering the next phase of our lives looking for someone to get us back on track. She has been amazing. One of the things that really makes Karen stand out is the focus she has when you're in a session with her. She follows your moves closely and always ensures that you have proper positioning with the weights so that you get the most out of your workout and you don't injure yourself. She also is incredibly understanding and compassionate and is heart centered in all that she does. I could go on and on but the bottom line is if you're looking for a passionate fitness expert who loves people and walks the walk, contact Karen at Raise The Bar Personal Training. Lots of free weights, grunge type..you know, where you actually sweat. Well, this is one of those places with a twist. There are two separate buildings; side-by-each as we say in RI. One houses the strength conditioning equipment (weights, treadmills) and the other is the cardio side which houses the boxing ring, heavy bags and everything else you would typically find in a MMA environment. What's nice is it's not your typical (Yo, Adrienne!) type gym or mentality. I would estimate it is evenly split 50/50-male/female...as more people become aware of the benefits of this type of cardio/core training. There is instruction (group and private) at all levels including: children's sessions in Boxing and Jujitsu; adult Muay Thai; BJJ, Boxing (non-contact) and sparring (only if you wish). While there are other places that offer some type of self-defense training, this is the ONLY boxing venue in the area. Overall, the best price structure as well. So if you're a beginner-advanced, just want to lose weight....OR MAYBE...you want to learn a good take down move the next time the guy in front of you is about to clear out the crab legs at the buffet...then this is the place.
