I have lived in the Ghent area for 5 years. I have tried the ABSOLUTELY AWFUL MONEY SNATCHING Changes City Spa and Hair Salon, where they turned my hair neon green TWICE and no, not on purpose. Chopped my hair off, from being mid-back to above my shoulders, by accident. Then had the audacity to tell me that I was "too picky of a client and maybe they're not a good match." Mind you, they made me pay to fix my own hair. Anyway, I have been to EVERY "big time" hair salon in Norfolk AND Virginia Beach and this is the first one who had a hair stylist who knew what she was doing and matched me with one that fit my personality and my needs. Also, their hair stylists make you feel like you are a very valued client, because you truly are. This salon pays attention to detail and matches you with a hair stylist who fits exactly what you are looking for. The girls here actually listen to you and actually care about the quality of your hair and actually care about the budget you have. LISTEN UP PEOPLE..,,,,THIS SALON IS NOT WORTH IT! As promised in my last review, I was going to update on how the second visit went.....WELL, the second visit didn't happen. Less than a week prior to my apt ON DEC 10th, I had a message from the salon owner herself to cancel because of a "conflict". I was unsure what that meant, so when I called back and spoke to someone else...they told me that it was because of my review!!!!! He stated that Jessica, the girl I was scheduled with felt uncomfortable, and that the owner herself wanted to be the one doing my hair. OOOOKAY fine, I asked when I could be rescheduled for and he couldn't offer me anything for 5 more weeks! UNACCEPTABLE. It's not only the holidays, but probably one of the hardest times to get a salon appt....and I KNOW that they KNOW that. Upset, but not upset with the person on the phone, I asked him if he could understand my frustration....and he agreed. He stated he would have the salon owner herself call me the next day to talk with me about possibly fitting me in. COOL. .... And I waited, The next day, I get a phone call...and I wish I remembered her name, but eh..it's not important. The salon owner called me back and off the bat was rude, stating that "I should be more careful of what I write about her salon online,,,since its her livelihood" ..."how dare I only give her salon 2 stars" ...WOW, REALLY LADY??? ...She then told me that she herself also refused to see me because of the bad review previously left. I asked her to go back and read my first review,,,,it wasn't BAD, there were plenty of good about it too! But some people are always glass half empty! Anyway, Anyone business owner has the right to refuse service...I GET THAT. But on the terms and the reasoning of which is was done, was and still in my mind is ridiculous. If the salon is your livelihood....you should treat your customers with RESPECT, KINDNESS AND WITH AN OPEN MIND. I hope people that have been to your salon and new people thinking of going read this...and maybe think again. It's not only for a salon experience, or to get a good cut/color... but people want to feel welcome, and proud to spend $$ with your establishment. I am thankful, I only got one try with your business....I have money to spend elsewhere, and that I shall do! Since this whole debacle of a salon visit..... I had the Brazilian hair straightening treatment done at the beginning of summer. The treatment has lasted the ENTIRE summer. Yay...no frizz from the VA. humidity. Not having to use a hot iron on my hair for these past three months has been fabulous & totally worth it. I've had my hair colored with the Davines (ammonia free) color line two times at AOC and love it. I am extremely impressed with the color and condition my hair is in. I couldn't be happier. UPDATE: I noticed that my review has (3) "not useful" comments. Let me elaborate to be perfectly clear and hopefully useful. I have been going to AOC for over two years for cuts, color, conditioning treatments & products. I normally see the same stylist. On the rare occasion that she hasn't been available when I want to get in at the last minute I have been able to book with a different stylist. I have absolutely no complains! I always feel listened to and pampered by everyone. When I have wanted to try something new, the stylist listen to what I'm looking for then make suggestions and explain what will work well for my hair, then take the time to show me how to style it on my own. This has made it so my style looks great when I do it, not just the day I get it done at the salon. If you are looking for a clean, friendly & modern Salon then give AOC a try. read more

I just moved here a month ago and had been scared of not finding a good salon that I would love as much as my old one. My fears have VANISHED! That's right, they are long gone! The moment I walked into this salon, they made me feel special. The owner's husband ( I believe) offered me a different array of beverages from coffee to lemonade. I chose to have lemon lime infused water and settled on the comfy couch to wait for my stylist. I didn't have to wait long, when Jessica greeted me with a warm hello! She asked me what I would like done to my hair, and I explained I was tired of it being long, but I loved my long hair! ( makes sense right?) Anyways she proceeded to cut my hair into the perfect length. She revived my otherwise dull hair and made me feel good about it again! After cutting she added some curls and explaining how I can get the same look at home. Jessica is a sweetheart and made me feel comfortable the entire time. Almost as though we were old friends catching up! I really appreciate that. Thank you to AOC salon for employing such a genuine individual, and I will Definitely be back! I've been searching for a new salon that compared to my old one in San Diego. I've tried out a lot of places, but was never 100% happy. After visiting AOC I'm no longer searching. All the staff is super nice and friendly and the space is trendy, but not so trendy that it's trying too hard. I've seen Heather twice now and love her. I'm in the process of going back to blonde after being dark brunette and she has done a wonderful job so far. So glad that I've found my new place!! read more

After moving to the Norfolk area from San Diego a few years ago I was afraid I would never sure I would never find a good hair salon here. AOC Salon has proven me wrong. I went in wanting a pixie cut (Jennifer Lawrence-esque) and honey blonde color. My stylist, Greg, gave me exactly what I wanted with minimal direction. I love my hair so much and I wish I had done before and after pictures when Greg asked me! I have been getting compliments left and right and its all thanks to Greg's awesome stylist abilities! As for the salon, its very modern and comfortable and the customer service is great (free drinks!). The sinks and chairs at the hair washing station are extremely comfortable as well. I have been going To AOC Salon since it opened, and I love it! My boys get their cute cuts there too for a reasonable price! I was so lucky to get Dalbe, the owner, to cut my locks from the beginning. No matter what my hair issue is, she and the staff there have me leaving feeling gorgeous and taken care of! I have referred a dozen girl friends there and everyone has stayed. I moved from Ghent to VB years ago, but will continue to drive to AOC for my haircuts. AOC's hair color and cut expert Greg Wozinkatis did a phenomenal job taking very dark damaged hair to healthy vibrant auburn in one visit. Simply amazing. I have never been one to write reviews, but my experience at AOC was hands down the best I have ever had. I travel the world and have been to many hair salons from big cities (New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Stockholm Stuttgart, Paris, and Istanbul - to mention a few) to small towns. AOC - you can expect: The staff is friendly, professional, and most importantly very talented. The cost is very reasonable . The ambiance is perfect...great music at a great volume....warm genuine welcome. I was living in Africa and knowing the reputation of AOC salon, I decided to schedule my appointment before leaving Africa to get my hair colored and cut immediately upon my return to the states. I am originally a auburn red head, but have been wearing my hair dark, dark brown. I made an account just so I can write a review for AOC Salon-yes I love them that much! Emily was my stylist and she was so sweet! I ended up getting partial highlights with flamboyage. I absolutely loved everything about my hair in the salon, but when I went to my car and the lighting was better, I wasn't too crazy with the color of my partial highlights (it was too light). I felt awful because my experience at the salon was amazing. I called the salon explaining the situation and Greg said he would take care of me. He ended up toning my hair to take out the warm pigments. I absolutely love it so much more. They have quality products and the staff is extremely nice. To top things off they sent me a postcard thanking me for coming in! Who does that?! I will definitely be coming in again soon! read more

Ask for Emily! My friend referred me to AOC Salon, so I gave it a shot today. Aesthetically, the building is beautiful, and the staff is friendly, talented, and detail oriented. I was able to get a same-day appointment, and upon arrival to the salon I was greeted and immediately attended to. They offer complimentary beverages including water, coffee, tea and lemonade. The stylists seem to really take pride in their work, and are very knowledgeable about current trends and haircare. Emily was my stylist and I could not have been happier with her service. She was very engaging, gave helpful suggestions for my haircare, and offered some good suggestions of places to visit in the area since I am new here. I think I've finally found my go to salon in Norfolk. After trying out several other places with disastrous results, AOC salon is exactly what I've been looking for. I made an appointment here after taking some suggestions from a few friends, and looking at the yelp reviews for each. My appointment (which was incredibly easy to make online) was with Elizabeth. I was placed with her because when making the appointment, I wrote in the notes section that I needed someone who was good with blonde hair. My hair at the time was this ridiculous two toned of a sort of weird dingy platinum on the bottom and a even weirder strawberry type blonde on the top, with about an inch of my natural dirty blonde roots. This was all because of the last salon disaster I had, which is a whole other review. So when I came in to see Elizabeth, my only goal for her was that she manage to get my hair all one shade of blonde and looking natural and pretty. I really wanted something along the lines of a light beige blonde, which is close to my natural hair color. The previous salon I had gone to told me that this color was just too hard to get and it wasn't doable...which is just ridiculous. Elizabeth was so wonderful and sweet. She listened to everything I was saying, and then consulted with another stylist to ensure that I got the very best hair color. She was also extremely helpful when I asked for her opinion about freshening up my cut, since I felt my hair was looking a little sad. In the end, she gave me the PERFECT color. It was exactly what I was looking for. She also gave me a really cute cut, and made me feel like my hair actually had a style to it! I'm incredibly happy with Elizabeth, and I know i'll be back to see her in the future. Note: The ONLY reason I gave this salon 4 stars was because I did find it to be a little pricey. I'm not sure that I've ever paid that much before. BUT, they did fix my awful color, and I'm willing to pay that much if that's what it takes to actually get my hair done right around here. read more

Both my wife and I had our hair cut here and are looking forward to going back. It has a comfortable vibe that instantly puts you at ease. I have long hair and am always worried about someone screwing it up (hence the need to find AOC). I currently live in Japan where dying hair blonde is not the specialty so I was living with 4 inch roots and fried ends for longer than I care to admit. I was traveling to Norfolk and had a very small window of 4 hours on one day to get my hair done. I chose AOC salon based on the yelp and trip advisor reviews and was able to book an appointment for a highlight, cut and treatment at exactly the time I wanted and I was SO excited! When I walked in I found out that my stylist had a family emergency and the salon had been able to notify everyone but me (I don't have a US number). Even though everyone had a full schedule they were able to make everything I had booked happen for me! At one point I had two stylists working on my hair at the same time. Krystal (my main stylist that day) and the other stylists who helped out did an AMAZING job and honestly this was one of the best cut/highlights I have ever had. I am bummed I'm not closer and able to make AOC my permanant salon. I would definitely come back and recommend this salon to all my family and friends. Such great customer service! Highly recommended this salon. Right off the bat I knew I was in the right place because of their beautiful vintage decor. Not only was it beautiful inside, but this was the most comfortable salon experience I've ever had. Complimentary drinks were provided and relaxing music played through out the salon. The chairs were super comfy and for the first time I wasn't breaking my neck when getting my hair washed lol. Lindsay was my stylist and she went out of her way to keep me 100% satisfied. I had an fabulous experience with Candace! I came in with brassy hair post an awful balayage and was hoping to at least have that corrected. She was very receptive to my concerns and took me through every stage so I could be actively involved in whether or not my hair needed to be treated further. I really appreciated her patience and kindness, the process overall took hours and even past closing but she made me a point to take the time and ensure I was 100% happy with it.
