Her patience and meticulous work in cutting my hair tells me how important it is to find someone who really cares. No feeling of being rushed as she took her time fixing my hair. I was gifted a spa package for my birthday by my lovely significant other. It was for a one hour massage and one hour facial, and when I tell you, that was one of the best massages I've had in my life my life. It was a great way to welcome a new year of life. the facial I received was life-changing and made me definitely want to go back. As a result, I decided to gift my significant other a package for a facial massage for Valentine's Day and the process was less than rewarding when I called (as the website directed me to call) to set things up, Amanda picked up and acted like she couldnt help me finalize the order. I was told that I can place the order online to take advantage of the Valentines special...Now I'm pretty computer savvy. However, there is nowhere on the website I've could have done it, so she eventually took my order over the phone (which I found out was the way it was originally done for my birthday surprise, so iwhy did it feel like I was pulling teeth to get this completed with Amanda...I have no idea. Just goes to show that customer service is dead and I do not believe customers are always right. This was my third visit and I was expecting the price to be the same. Well I was sadly mistaken. When I went pay the bill it was $91.16 more than previous time. I was in complete disbelief. I will not be returning at all. I have been to several salons and they always quote the price before they even start doing any service on the client. I would highly recommend Alona For a spa pedicure! Yes it's more expensive (67.00) however it's worth it because they take sanitation extremely seriously. I've seen children getting hair cuts and having princess pedicures and regulars and event night hair styling. I've seen extensions and full coloring and some getting their nails done while the highlights process is going on as well. It is larger than you think inside than what you see in the storefront. I've been seeing Lolita, one of their more experienced stylists for over a decade and never considered straying. Pricing varies in experience of stylist and services you are looking for so ask for pricing upfront so no surprises at the end. Their company app promotes their new additions to the family with discounts on services and same day service discounts so keep notifications turned on. Currently for the holidays they are promoting Gift Card purchases (every $100 card gets $20 dollar extra spa bucks) to spend on what ever service you want through end of March). I buy them for myself... is that selfish? I don't think so. Lolita has seen me through boyfriends and then finding the one and getting married and buying my first home and promotions. A stylist that is not only very skilled at her services but is personable, friendly, and a genuinely kind person. I called Changes and they were able to fit me in on the same day and this is the best haircut I've ever had - and it was raining that day so you know if my curly hair looked good she worked a miracle! She has magic hands, she could be a massage therapist as well, as she incorporates a great deal of massage into the facial, which is my favorite part! When I lived in Norfolk, I came here all the time for my eyebrows. It had been awhile, but this was the first place I thought of when planning for my best friend's bridal party. Erin was always so sweet on the phone through many changes in the number of the group and what services we wanted. We were given a private conference room to decorate set up our champagne and snacks. When a group of the stylists came in one by one to hand us glasses of champagne, we felt like VIP. We were taken into the pedi room shortly after and fell into heaven. At the end of it all, Erin brought us a little package with a small gift and picture she took of us. Little touches like this are enough to make the girls feel special. Changes is every girls dream salon. Not only do they offer every service imaginable, but the stylists are extremely knowledgeable and talented. I have to confess I've always had Gil cut and dye my hair, but every customer that walks in walks out a changed woman. Both locations on 21st street are inviting and have a contagious energy. Gil has done absolutely everything to my hair and has always kept it healthy. Unlike many of the other stylists I've been to, he does what I want and makes sure it's manageable. From long with side swept bangs to a short pixie cut, I've entrusted changes and will be a loyal patron for years to come. Give them a shot, but get your own Gil, he's mine. read more

I was a first time client, it was a busy Saturday and I felt very overlooked. I had a hair cut and style along with a mani-pedi. The mani room is large and crowded, it did not feel very indulgent or special. The pedicure room was separate from manicure room and I was able to relax and sit back for a bit. Unfortunately, it was very busy and I felt rushed through the experience. I liked my manicurist - she was very nice but the experience was just OK. The stylist was very nice and my hair looked great. Again, the experience was just OK. The stylist talked alot and most of it was complaining or remarks about other people..... Maybe I will try again in the future, but for now I will explore other salons. For the prices I paid I want to feel little more indulged and not rushed. //this is a very late review// The stylist I had was Nicole, who was referred to me by several of my co-workers. She cuts hair beautifully, I'll give her that. I had her cut about 10 inches off my hair and I was very happy with it. I came back to her, not long after my hair cut, hoping she could do an ombre. She used a "new technique" to achieve a more balayage look. It didn't work, we pulled a deep red after 3+ hours in the chair. I came back a second time and the pictures attached here are what we got. I was mortified, I didn't know what to think. I was embarrassed, there was literally a class being taught a couple stations down. (The salon wasn't even open, Nicole saw me personally to get this done). It was like a scene from the movies, the instructor said, "I don't know why people with dark hair like ASIANS keep trying to go blonde! It's ridiculous," the whole class laughs and jokes about it- [cue ME] as I walk past the entire class with my orange head! I felt like I was in a nightmare. She had a giant framed certificate at her station that acknowledges her upper skill level in coloring. I thought I was in good hands. There was no blending, just a stark line of my dark hair and then orange. The bottom half was blunt, no gradient. It just wasn't what I asked for, but I'd been the chair for 4+ hours and we went from bad to worse. I just wanted to get out of there ASAP. My total, plus tip was close to $300. I got my hair fixed at Josef's Salon in Virginia Beach. When trying to get a refund, I had to email, call, leave VM, until finally a scheduled sit down meeting with the manager was put in place. So I came back to the salon, and the manager tried to reprimand me for not having it "fixed" at Changes by another stylist. I looked her dead in the face and said, "I literally had YOUR BEST stylist give me the worst consultation and encouraged me, that she could achieve an ombré! I don't trust her or anyone at this salon to color my hair." I showed her these pictures and only then was I was refunded. I wish I could them no stars for this whole experience. The moral of the lesson: 1. If you want to go blonde, and you have dark hair like me (AN ASIAN), do it it stages & prepare for the brass! 2. don't let anyone try to make you feel bad about it. What that lady said to all those students was completely inappropriate and there are plenty of people with dark hair naturally that stay blonde: Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Liane V, Desi Perkins. 3. Go to someone of whose work you've seen before. At the time, I didn't do my research to see Nicole's picture references of past ombrés or balayages. This was completely my fault. Asking someone to do something she hasn't successfully done before wasn't the best game plan, and it backfired on me. Ultimately I wasted my time and fried my hair in the process. read more

I loved my stylist but this is a salon I will never return to again. After 5 years as a customer, I have had enough. Their policies are not at all customer friendly. No tips on credit cards was annoying - who carries cash anymore? Then they progressed to requiring a credit card to make an appointment. WHAT?! Who are you, the Hilton? That's preposterous! How about you credit me when my stylist/masseuse cancels with less than 24 hours notice? That happened at least 6 times! The desk staff, while generally polite, are totally incompetent. Call ahead to let them know you're stuck in the tunnel? "You'd better be here within 15 minutes of your appointment or you'll be charged for cancelling." Call ahead to see if your appointment will be running on time? "Yes, your stylist is on schedule" only to sit for 35 minutes while she still blow dries the client ahead (at least 45 minutes behind if she'd actually checked). Parking is insane. I'm surprised they haven't had to offer valet parking for the insanity that is their parking lot. read more

THEY WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO ADD A TIP IF YOU PAY BY CARD. This is the only complaint I have. Who carries cash anymore? I hardly ever do! They have an ATM on premises but who wants to add a service charge on top of a tip for a not-cheap service? It's annoying and unprofessional and Changes seems to be the only place that still does this, at least in my experience. If they change this policy, I'll add that fifth star. Having said that, I have been going for years. My hair is super thick and just curly/wavy enough to be problematic. When I moved to the area it took me months to find a stylist who could deal with it. Al was recommended to me and I have never been disappointed with his work. On top of all that, he is really sweet and fun. If you tell him you love the scalp massage during your wash, he'll give you a little extra :) I only occasionally treat myself to other services but their mani/pedi and massage services are luxurious and the facilities are nice. read more

Okay. I have to admit, I am not a regular client at Changes, but I must tell you about one of the hair stylists that works there... she is super RAD. I have very long, wavy to curly hair, and it can be a huge hassle to manage sometimes. Especially if you are lazy like I am. Sometimes. Not only am I sometimes lazy, I am also VERY VERY picky about who gets to cut my hair. Or even touch it. I have a very solid love hate bond with my mane. Anyway, last summer as I was driving from one lab to the next, stressed to the max, to study DNA and complicated cyclohexanes, I broke the heel off my shoe and just about had it with that day. I decided to stop at the salon on 21st street, Changes, and just have someone there wash and dry my hair and make it all pretty. Hair and makeup can always make a girl feel good. So, I limped in with one shoe in hand, the other on my foot, harried, frizzed, and in need of lots of TLC. The receptionist said that I was in luck and there was someone ready right then due to a cancellation. And... it was hair stylist love at first sight! Sharon took one look at me and said, "OMG! You're so pretty!" And I brightened up immediately and said, "No way! Omg! YOU'RE so pretty!" Our exchanges pretty much went on like that for the next hour... lol. And when she was done, omgs, WOW- seriously she did the best blow out on my hair, EVER. I went in to see her a few more times after that, and she has always been amazing. If you want great color, an amazing blowout, or a funky cut or all three, with a stylist with amazing energy, Sharon C at Changes is the one to see. You can't miss her. She looks like Katy Perry. Also, FYI, bring cash for tip because they don't offer that on the credit card. read more

It's a pet peeve of mine when a service is offered for X time and the actual time falls significantly short. It's like buying a dozen eggs and only getting eight in the carton. This isn't what I paid for. I came in for the first time with an appointment for a 60 minute facial. Arriving 10 minutes early to get checked in (small aside, they ask for way way too much personal information) I wasn't brought back until well after my appointment start time. My technician was wrapped up and out of the room before the original appointment time ended. It would be generous to say I had 45 minute facial. As for the service, I've had better, I've had worse. But for $90, you can be certain I expected better. Ultimately, I'd say go elsewhere for a facial. Can't speak to their other services, but this place is deceptively large and they seem to offer everything; granted, this is all at a price point slightly higher than other local spots. read more

I am new to the area and was looking for a simple 1" TRIM and a simple 1/2 updo. I made my appointment for 4pm knowing I had to be out of there by 5pm and made sure I told the receptionist who took my appointment. She booked me with Melissa. (What a mistake). I am biracial and said that multiple times. Melissa, the stylist, stated repeatedly that she was unfamiliar how to use a large curling iron. I arrived 5 minutes early and I was seated 15-20 minutes late. She said with confidence that she could get me out by 5 but when she didn't she blamed it on the notes that were printed on the appointment sheet. In her defense she was right about that at least the notes were wrong of what I was requesting. I asked her to simply trim the dead ends (NOT A STYLED CUT) -- $40.00 and my 1/2 updo pulled back into a pony tail. Large curls from the pony tail hair sprayed and pinned. I told her multiple times that I did not think her curling iron was big enough. She did not listen to me until 5pm. She had to borrow a curling iron from the hairstylist next to her, plug it in, wait for it to heat up. The guy behind her had to come over and show her exactly what I was asking for and she was STILL confused. I even recommended to her HOW to do the curl to get the affect that the man was telling her about. She tried to listen but was being stubborn. This girl was a level 4 (apparently the highest they have). I think not. They need to reevaluate or not let those who are NOT familiar with certain types of hair work on them. Oh by the way I washed and blow dryer my hair strait before arriving. Was NOT difficult. I would have done it myself at home if I could find my curling iron that is packed away since we recently move here. I would like to try the girl that tried to help her though she seemed knowledgeable and competent. I know each company has the ability and capacity to adjust prices accordingly. My TRIM should NEVER have been $40.00 and my UPDO that she was incompetent of doing should NEVER have cost me $60.00. $100 -- YUP -- No real work was done. Other stylists had to help this level 4 and she was 15-20 minutes late and blamed it on everyone else except her lack of skills.!! read more

Had to do an update as Chessy no longer works there. My hair was getting so damaged that I gave in and dragged myself to Changes for a trim. I have stupid curly hair and for the longest I could never figure out what to do with it. Chessy did a fantastic job and then on my second visit I met Melissa (Or was it Michelle? I'm terrible with names and I hope she forgives me for that). The point is- she is fantastic! I learned one very important thing from her that has kept my hair looking as good as it does: "Don't touch your hair unless you have product in your hand". That has saved my life and my hair. She's incredibly nice, personable, and when I come back- I'll be requesting her. She gave me some suggestions for curly hair and they were the best suggestions I've ever gotten- my hair looks great. Worst haircut experience of my life. Megan cut my hair, cost 48 dollars. Right side an inch longer than the left and angles like Jen Anniston via friends with a weed wacker. I complained and they brought me in to fix it. Al told me it was a good haircut and he didn't want to touch it "and be the next person I didn't like". Treated myself to a little spa day here recently and could not be more impressed. All the sessions went effortlessly, and with each one, I found myself utterly relaxed and pampered. I would highly recommend this place for any of the services I received (60 minute massage, rejuvenation facial, hydrating pedicure), and definitely intend on going here again.
