My father had a '67 Firebird and a '69 Camaro that frequently make me choke on my Salsa when I see what those vehicles now fetch at auction. Even the '98 Buick Regal GS that I drove into the ground is now paying off numerous student loans for someone. And let's not sleep on the '72 Country Squire with the plastic side panels that we mocked as kids -- this beast is now a nerd fiesta for some lucky owner. Mecum is time well spent in the wayback machine and is worthy of five easy stars.

I purchased a 2012 Chevy 3500 through Greater Rockford Auto Auction that was sold Green Light with a 4.0 condition grade. When the truck arrived at my dealership, we discovered severe structural frame rot with large holes in the frame, making the truck unsafe to drive. I contacted GRAA to find out how a truck in this condition received a 4.0 grade. GRAA confirmed in writing that their own check-in staff assigned the 4.0 grade when the vehicle was photographed. They also confirmed that no frame inspection was performed and no frame damage was announced. I did order the PSI on the truck. What I did not know was that at GRAA, a frame inspection is not included with the standard PSI and must be specifically requested and paid for separately. At other auctions I have dealt with, the frame is included with the PSI. Dealers need to know this before relying on a PSI at GRAA. I worked with Chad regarding the issue, but instead of helping resolve a serious safety problem, I was told the truck would remain sold because it was outside the post-sale inspection deadline. I understand auctions have rules and deadlines. I also understand used vehicles can have problems. But how does a truck with severe structural frame damage receive a 4.0 grade and Green Light designation when the frame was never inspected? I spoke with other auction professionals who told me they would have handled this situation differently and would have expected the auction to work toward taking the truck back. I have contacted the appropriate agencies regarding this matter. My goal in posting this review is to make other dealers aware of what happened so they can protect themselves. If you buy from GRAA, don't assume the standard PSI includes a frame inspection. Ask specifically for the frame to be inspected before you buy. After 30+ years in this business, this has been one of the most disappointing auction experiences I have ever had. This is the one I'd post. It's long enough to establish what happened, but the important facts are easy to find: 4.0 grade Green Light no frame inspection catastrophic frame damage PSI didn't include the frame Chad wouldn't resolve it.
