I have been using Apex for two years now and love the nurse practitioner (PCP), Jane Darko. She is terrific. She's calm, professional, compassionate. The office is well run, too. I always get appointments when I request them. When I've needed prescriptions there hasn't been a problem. The facility is clean and everyone is friendly. (Unlike experiences other people have had, I'm not required to go there every three months. I'm not sure what people are talking about there.) In summary, I prefer going here to going to the GW clinic, using MDs as PCPs. You get more time with the practitioner and better care. read more

The NPs at this practice are great. I always feel like they really care about my well-being. They are flexible with scheduling appointments. The providers are easy to get in touch with. I found this practice when I was in between jobs and had Medicaid and needed someone who accepted the insurance, but I love them so much that I have stayed with them since my insurance changed. Even though I have lived in DC for over 2 years, I had yet to find a new primary care physician. I know, terrible! But after getting sick one time too many, with no where to turn, I knew I needed to woman up and to the darn thing. Enter Apex. I literally walk past here every morning on my way to Farragut West (conveniently located like 15 steps away!), but it wasn't until I stared at the sign mentioning that they accept Blue Cross insurance AND new patients over 100 times that it finally clicked inside my normally large brain. I called that afternoon and they were able to offer me an appointment in a week! Jane is not actually a doctor, she is a nurse practitioner, and she is great! Carefully went over everything I needed to know, talked through the tests she was running, scheduled followup appointments, and has a great bedside manner. Finally, I don't fear going to the doctor. Well, at least as much. The staff is friendly, forms were quick and easy to fill out, and I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be seen. In fact, the last time I came in, Jane was already waiting at the front desk and took me back immediately. Never has this EVER happened to me before. I highly recommend. read more

I work in the health care industry and I am an avid health care consumer so I have been to a lot of providers- dentist every six months, chiropractic care weekly, every annual and preventative exam you can think of. I know a good provider/practice when I see it, and this is one of the best healthcare experiences I have ever had. Primary care in DC is a challenge as you may know. Many practices are not accepting new patients, and if you need immediate care for a UTI or strep, you wind up going to minute clinic because your primary can't see you for three days. Needless to say, the primary care scene in DC is saturated from a patient/consumer perspective. Everything went like clockwork this time. I called, they accepted me as a new patient, scheduled me two days out, paperwork was simple, and the receptionist and environment are very pleasant. They even saw me an hour early, but that was my unique experience, and I don't want to get hopes up about changing times last minute. The point is that they were welcoming, accommodating, and patient-centered regardless of my last minute request. The experience with the providers was the best part. The person who started my intake introduced himself, told me his title of Medical Assistant, and listened to me explain why I was there beyond the one or two words they normally care about listening to in that initial phase of your visit. He was friendly and you can tell he is happy there and loves his job. The NP was everything I expected: knowledgable, a great listener, and handled two vastly different medical questions in one fell swoop. In the past without being able to nail down a primary care until now, I would have gone to at least one specialist to address these questions causing myself and the health care system excessive time and cost. This is the great thing about primary care: yes, they may still refer you to a specialist on occasion, but regardless of if you have a PPO or HMO, you should establish yourself with a primary provider. One visit, two issues, both solved, AND I can't wait to go back and recommend Apex to others. I am a firm believer in the fact that NPs provide high quality health care. I specifically searched for NPs in my insurance directory. NPs are the wave of the future of healthcare, and you will find them to be more abundant and accessible in the very near future as health care reform rolls out. You won't be disappointed here and they are open to feedback-positive and negative- to make the patient's experience as high quality and efficient as possible. read more

First, let me say, I can't stand going to the doctor's. I feel like they never actually say or do or recommend any real concrete ANYTHING. This is NOT the case with Jane. She is an absolute DELIGHT. I'm a fainter with needles and blood, some might say a *little* high maintenance, but Jane wasn't startled or rude or put off by any of this or by my many, many questions since I hadn't had an annual check-up in over 18 months. Jane legitimized all my concerns and gave me an incredibly thorough check-up. She is calming, relatable, understanding and - most importantly- understandable! I've never felt so cared for by a PCP on the first visit. I loved it. She even wrote me a referral for a dermatologist to get my moles/freckles looked over without hesitation. I hesitate writing this because I fear everything I like about the practice might disappear if this place becomes too popular (as with all other things I enjoy in my native city). With that being said, I've had great experiences with this place. Always able to find an appt if I need one, the staff is friendly, and they're very accommodating when need be. *side note. It'd be five stars, but I have yet to meet a physician (although the RN is quite good.) which is a bit strange, but all my needs have been met thus far, so I can't quite complain. read more

Although the care was good quality and timely, I strongly discourage people from using them as a primary care provider if you have regular prescriptions. The practice has a policy of requiring patients to come for appointments every 3 months. That means that instead of coming once a year for a physical/check up for routine prescriptions, you instead have to pay a co-pay and spend the time to come to the office every 3 months just to have your vitals taken. This is a rigid policy and does not vary depending on the routine nature of the prescription. So be very wary unless you want to keep having to go to the doctor for no reason and at a cost of time and money to you. I have never experienced this policy at any other provider and it is a MAJOR inconvenience. (this was from 2013) read more

Today went into Apex Primary Care to find out my test result regarding my cholesterol diagnosis. The diagnosis came back a negative results. A few months ago back in April my weight was 140 on the first visit. Then when I came back again the nurse said that it was 165. When I dissagreed and question why the sudden gain in my weight, Dr. Darko came in and said I'll weight you again. When she had weighted me again and said it was 168 pounds, I became a little purplexed and started to get upset regarding the result. Dr. Drake was not professional at all regarding my unclairity in my weight gain. I was expecting her to give me other solutions of how I can resolve the weight increase. I don't think it just the cholesterol issue, I eat a great deal of high calorie foods that could effect my weight as well. She was a little arrogent in telling me that if I don't trust their weight results and made me feel insulted and brushed off by referring that I can go see another doctor, if I'm not satisfied. I sort of got my feelings hurt a little bit and felt shot down emotionally. read more

I've been going here for years (before they moved offices) because I really like Dr. Darko and the doctors here. However, I've had issues with them failing to follow up with testing that's been done. They forgot to follow up on more than four occasions, even upon my calling and emailing constantly because I was worried about my health, when I had testing done for various items. I was also prescribed medication for the issue they were checking on (which in turn was actually making me sick because it was not correct). I also have asked another of my doctors opinion on a certain issue I've been experiencing for 2 years now (relevant to what was being tested with Dr. Darko), who was appalled that my primary care physician had not and would not (even upon my request) refer me to a specialist for the issue. BEWARE: This office is run by Jane O. Offei Darko (Master of Science in Nursing) and Offa Darko (Office Manager) - their relationship is a huge conflict of interest. Once you step in the door they will charge you $200. They order excessive lab tests and do not follow-up with lab test results in a timely manner (e.g. get results five days after promised). Wait time to see the provider (Jane O. Offei Darko) is excessive - takes over an hour if don't have appointment. The provider asks unnecessary questions, provides non-helpful medical advice and writes prescriptions for medication that is not needed. Essentially, Apex Primary Care will try to get as much money from you as possible without providing quality health services. The provider does not discuss what your options are. Rather, the provider tells you what will happen so they can run up your medical bill and then after the fact claim that you provided consent. This please is a disgrace to the medical industry. read more

She took the time to go over my long list of tests I wanted as part of my full physical. She's attentive, knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable. After being referred to by a colleague, I've had Dr. Darko for years as my PCP, and recently have been seen by a great new addition to the practice - Dr. Drew. While being generally healthy, I've had an unfortunate spat of random small illnesses this past year and Apex has always fit me in that day to see me and give me spot-on diagnosis and treatment. And I know this because I got concerned about one such issue and visited Urgent Care for an issue, and they gave me the same diagnosis as Apex. They are very knowledgeable and caring, and when something is outside their general practice they honestly & quickly refer to a specialist. The front desk is helpful and nice when scheduling and checking you in. They are exactly what I am looking for in a PCP - annual exams, flu/vaccine shots, and the first medical point of contact for when I feel sick. And they will go the extra mile if you need it. As a note, I have a separate OB/GYN (since insurance allows it), so I cannot comment on their well woman practice although they seem knowledgeable, and my BCBS insurance covers all my visits & copays which is fantastic. Because of that, I am unsure of the cost to the uninsured or with limited coverage so I cannot comment on that either. And I did have to fix a billing issue once, but that's it in the 5+ years I've been going there and it was taken care of with minimal effort on my part. Also, I'd recommend getting your appointment with Dr. Drew or Dr. Darko. I've seen a few other nurse practitioners from Apex over the years who fill in or do training that range from good to simply OK, but I've only had great experiences with Dr. Drew and Dr. Darko. read more

Today was my first visit at APEX and I must say that my experience was awesome...even though I'm sick and was there for an urgent care visit. The front desk staff was very professional and courteous when I arrived. I was seen by the MA and Dr. Darko within 10 minutes of completing my paperwork. Dr. Darko was very thorough and had great "bed-side" manner. This will be my new primary care physician and I would highly recommend anyone who is in need of urgent care and/or a new primary care physician to please visit APEX. read more

For months I put off finding another PCP when my previous PCP moved to South Dakota. I carefully looked through the list of providers offered by my insurance and googled all of them. The pickings were slim because I was looking for a female PCP, and I wanted to try a Nurse Practicioner at the recommendation of a friend. The only NP within close proximity to my office was Jane Offei-Darko. I was apprehensive because I had never used a NP. However, my fears were allayed after my first visit with her. First, I was thrilled because the Apex Primary Care office was a lot closer to my job than I thought. Second, the check in process was incredibly smooth. I had barely filled out all of my paperwork when I was being called to an exam room. Finally, I met Jane. She introduced herself as Jane, which I thought was great, and she was warm. I felt at ease instantly. I explained the reasons for my visit and she addressed every one efficiently without making me feel rushed. I would highly recommend having Jane as a PCP and coming to Apex. read more

I was referred to NP Jane Darko by a colleague years ago and have now referred numerous colleagues to Apex myself. NP Jane is knowledgeable, friendly and very personable. She remembers me each time I'm there and makes me feel well cared for as my PCP. I have never had less than a positive experience with any Apex staff either. Their hours are very accommodating and their processes are efficient so I can always go on my lunch break. I highly recommend APEX Primary Care as a PCP for anyone new to the area or looking to change providers. read more

Nurse Darko is my PCP. She's friendly, knowledgeable, and fast. I've only gone in with appointments, but I've never had to wait. I only see her once a year, but she remembers things about me and genuinely seems concerned about how I'm doing (have some chronic medical stuff). I also use Nurse Darko instead of going to a gynecologist - for regular check-ups, she's great. read more

Apex is great! I've seen both Dr. Drew and Dr. Darko. They're both sweet and caring and very knowledgeable. I always get in and out on time, and Apex even offers early morning and evening appointments. This is the first place where I got a full physical with lab tests. It felt great to know my doctors care about all the items on that list. Once there was a question about my insurance, and staff called to make sure I was covered instead of making me pay. I came her on the recommendation of a coworker as somewhere with excellent primary care and women's health care as well. She couldn't have been more right. I scheduled a pap/pelvic exam with Dr. Darko, and she was knowledgeable, friendly, and seemed genuinely concerned about MY health personally. While I was there she asked if I'd like to do a full physical. She had me come in a couple days later to do bloodwork (they like to do bloodwork in the morning, which is why I had to come back) and they did not charge me another copay for the bloodwork visit. When the bloodwork was complete she asked me come back so go over it with me and again did not charge a separate copay. She is very thorough and attentive with regards to your health, and yet have been in and out in less than an hour every time, including waiting area time. For the bloodwork and follow up I think it took 15-20 minutes. I'm very pleased to have found a reliable primary care physician who seems to genuinely care about her patients. I'll mention that I saw one of the other practitioners as well when I went in for a sick visit and Dr. Darko wasn't available. This woman was similarly efficient, but thorough and kind. read more

This IS NOT a review about any medical service provided by APEX PRIMARY CARE GROUP in DC, rather a review of their website info and my encounter with the staff. In brief, here is my story. I visited the clinic on July 31, 2015 at 5:04pm because of a bad sore throat. The front desk staff asked me if I had an appointment and I said no. She replied they don't see walk-in patients after 5pm. I replied it's 5:04pm and I have a very painful sore throat. She asked me to wait until she talked to her manager. A few minutes later the manager and a nurse (I assume it was a nurse) came and asked me what's going on. I said I wanted to see a nurse because of a painful sore throat. He started saying something that because of strict policy, they could not see patients who walk-in after 5pm. I interrupted him and asked: "so the doctor cannot see me?" He promptly replied "No". I thanked and left. Now, I'm all for rules, but those rules should be clear - on their website it says office hours are Monday through Friday 7:30am to 6:00pm (no mention of 5pm cutoff for walk-ins). To help the future patients, the website should be updated to reflect the clinic policy that the last walk-ins need to check in before 5pm on workdays. I visited the clinic because a friend recommended it, although the location is way out of my way. I will never go back. PS: 2 hours later, a nurse at a CVS Minute Clinic checked my ENT and I got my medication. read more

The place is quite new, has good facilities, very friendly staff, and they were very knowledgable on ensuring that my treatment is processed using the correct code (meaning I don't have to pay!). I've been seeing Jane for about 4 years, since before her move to the new space and banner of "Apex". She was good before Apex happened, thus why I stuck with her so long. This review is more about Apex then about Jane (who is still good, but stretched too thin). I'm on medications that require written refills each month, so I have to go to Apex pretty frequently for that, and I also go there for my annual physicals and other issues. Unless it's an emergency, I always call and ask to make an appointment with Jane. There is usually 1 other NP working there as well, but they come and go all the time. It's annoying and difficult to have to meet a new NP every time you go, you start to feel like a broken record. And Jane has gotten so busy that even when I call ahead to specifically request an appointment with her (which I'm told is ok), when I get there, she's not in and they stick me with whoever the new NP of the month happens to be. I think that is poor patient/client care. Once, I went in with a killer sore throat and got tested for strep. Never heard back on test results (they didn't to the rapid test for some reason...) so I figured that no news was good news. WRONG! I went in a few months later and asked about the results, because the sore throat did last a long time, so they checked my file and LO AND BEHOLD I actually DID have strep throat. How do you not follow up with a patient who has strep throat? That probably should have been the kicker for me, but knowing how difficult it is to find OK health care in DC, I really didn't want to have to slog through the process of finding a new provider. So I stuck it out, but lately have been receiving more and more reluctance on their part to continue to write my prescriptions for medications that they've been giving me for years with no problem. The final straw was when I recently scheduled an appointment WITH JANE, showed up, was told Jane wasn't there, saw the new NP, who in turn told me I needed an outside referral for her to continue to give me my prescriptions. I'm sure it won't be easy, but I think it's time that I find myself a real doctor or more experienced NP, who will take the time to talk to me and actually get to know my health care needs. I understand that health care is a challenging profession to be in these days, but I'm sure there are better ways to go about treating people that doesn't involve a system where your office is basically just a patient processing plant. read more

This is a tough one. I want to give them 2.5 stars but rounded up. After putting off finding a new PCP for way too long, I finally had no choice when I needed a tetanus booster and immunization form signed as a requirement for the grad school program I'm about to begin. As usual, I turned to Yelp and ended up finding Apex. Everyone I met and dealt with was very friendly, the space itself is nice (if a little small), and the environment was overall much more low-key than your average doctor's office or walk-in clinic, which I appreciated. I hate that hectic feeling like we're all just cars in an assembly line instead of humans. BUT. My issue came with the fact that they are also a "travel medicine" clinic. This wouldn't be a problem in the slightest, except that apparently ALL immunizations - even standard things that are common and/or required in the U.S., LIKE A TETANUS SHOT - falls under their "travel medicine" side and not their "primary care" side. And, lo and behold, their travel medicine side does not accept any type of insurance. None. Nada. Zip. Mind you, when I made the appointment on the phone, I told the receptionist what I was coming in for and she didn't mention a thing about how it would be considered travel medicine and therefore my insurance wouldn't be applicable. When I DID find this out, I had already been there for about 20 minutes and had already filled out all of the new patient forms. I could have left. But I also didn't want to (and didn't really have the time to) scour for another new doctor who is accepting new patients, make a new appointment, etc. etc. So I just paid it and they gave me an invoice to send a claim to my insurance company. We will see how that turns out. It was $50 for the "travel medicine consultation" (ha!) and $90 for the shot itself. So, a grand total of $140 for a very routine tetanus booster and signature on a school form. Overall, and oddly enough, I do think I would come back to Apex if I was just sick - and 100% certain that nothing I'm doing could be considered travel medicine. Like I said, everyone WAS really friendly and it was easy-in, easy-out. But I was pretty pissed, and feel like they were trying to pull one over on me. Yuck. read more

I've only had great experiences at Apex. They have early morning and afternoon hours and I can usually schedule an appointment for the same day or next day. I use Dr. Jane Darko as my PCP and have found her to be knowledgeable, caring, and a great listener. My experiences with Apex nurses and support staff have also always been competent, efficient and friendly. read more

I went there because of the great review on Yelp. Well, it turns out to be quite disappointing experience. Jane drew blood for test and resulted in three large bruise taking more than three weeks to fade away! Very sore arm at the same time. I took a picture of it and am going to talk with them about this. They also missed a key test from the samples they collected. Will not return there in the future. read more

I have been a patient at Apex Primary Care for over three years. Dr. Darko and Dr. Drew are both wonderful and have great bedside manner. I am never in the waiting room any longer than 10 minutes. They are very patient, professional and I am always able to get an appointment when I need it. They also explain my lab results in regular terms and do not make me feel bad for not exercising or not eating better (I'm not overweight but getting to the age where my heart is becoming angry from the lack of cardio); instead they are encouraging. For those of you who hate going to the doctor and then having to make another appointment with a lab - this place does it all and the results come back within a couple of days. This is a major plus for me. The location is also great, right outside of Farragut West. One thing I would note is that for walk-ins, being serviced depends on the staff available. Someone walked in to get stitches for a cut but did not get seen because that particular doctor/practitioner was not available until the next day. read more

I went in about 6 months ago looking for a new primary care doctor. They did a routine examination and gave me a prescription for a birth control pill for 6 months. I thought that was a bit odd since the general practice of every place I have ever visited in the past was to give a one year prescription, but I figured that they would easily allow refills past that point. Well, it's six months later and they refuse to give a new prescription without an exam. I called to speak to my nurse, and they say that this is their general practice and that people always need to come in for an exam after six months, even if someone has been on the same prescription for YEARS. Even the pharmacist at Walgreens claims she has never heard of a doctor only giving six month prescriptions. I have never encountered a more blatant money grab from a doctor's office in my life. The best (worst) part is that my insurance only covers an annual visit. I definitely will be finding a new doctor immediately. read more
