Nice hideaway spot. Pleasant staff. Good coffee. Need to come back at a later date to try the food. But everything on display looks good

I had an excellent, generous, gracious meal at the Bavarian Chef this afternoon for my birthday…read more I'm still groaning! The food was fabulous and we got the full complement of sides--whipped potatoes, green beans, creamed corn, spaetzle, carrots and apples, potato dumplings, zucchini, braised red cabbage, German potato salad, maybe more (my belly's so full, I'm not remembering well...)--rye rolls, red pepper soup with crab, trout with almonds (yum!). We had a very nice dry German Riesling and. German Pinot Noir. The five of us shared a piece of the amazing German chocolate cake. Our server, Nick, was very pleasant, efficient and professional--good at his job and possessing a beautiful, warm smile. I had an Asbach Sidecar that was very well made. I see a negative review from a couple of months ago (~February 2026-ish?) that sounds like it was written about another restaurant, not the delightful Bavarian Chef I know and love. The writer of that poor review seems to have been enjoying the sound of her own writing (which leans toward the overly dramatic and away from anything like an honest review) more than trying to express anything real about the Bavarian Chef. She seems to have an ax of some kind to grind, as she could find not one nice, decent thing to say. I disagree with her with every well-seasoned, perfectly cooked vegetable and flavorful rye roll digesting in my belly right now. The Bavarian Chef is a treat. You'd be a fool to miss it!

All three of us were completely underwhelmed, Nothing was terrible, but nothing wowed us, and for the price we wanted wow. We started with drinks and the bread. The cottage cheese/butter mixture was yummy, but the rolls were overdone and dry inside. I only ate half of mine. The house white wine was lovely and my son had a very creative and interesting cocktail. The gem lettuce salad was wonderful. - the highlight of the evening. Tender lettuce, fresh herbs, green goddess dressing. The spring peas with wasabi butter were quite good as well. Then things went downhill. The spaetzle dish was a huge disappointment. The pasta was mushy, and we could barely taste the raclette. The charred broccolini on top was great, but that's not why you order spaetzle. We told the server that we didn't care for the dish, but she didn't ask for further details. The white asparagus has a strange vinegar flavor, but was rescued by the lovely sauce. We all ordered the chicken schnitzel. I'm still scratching my head over what the chef was trying to accomplish. The schnitzel itself was tender and perfectly cooked. The few bites I had without sauce were quite good. But the chicken was drenched in an overwhelming sauce (romesco?) although I think the menu said it was a Thai sauce. Whatever it was, it didn't go with the schnitzel at all. The endive on top of the schnitzel was delicious, however. Also, the menu said the dish had currywurst in it. None of us could taste even a hint of it. Portions are modest, and we could have eaten dessert, but none of us wanted to be expensively disappointed even further, so we called it a night.

Kardinal Hall hits that perfect Charlottesville sweet spot: great food, great beer, great people,…read moreand a space that feels both fun and thoughtfully designed. My Wahoo daughter brought me here during Family Weekend, and now I totally get why this place is a UVA favorite. The building itself is part of a beautifully restored historic industrial complex off Preston Avenue. It's an adaptive-reuse space (formerly part of the old Coca-Cola bottling works), and the design keeps that industrial character alive: tall ceilings, exposed materials, and a layout that feels open, social, and easygoing. The outdoor area is especially smartly done. They've got roll-down fabric walls and overhead heat lamps that keep the patio comfortable even when the temperature dips. It's basically an all-weather beer-garden vibe, and it works. Here's how our meal went down: * Shared starter: the Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel. Warm, soft, perfectly salted, and killer with both the mustard and the cheese sauce. * My entrée: the Local Steak Salad -- gorgeous presentation, tender grass-fed beef, and those pickled turnips, radish slices, and greens in herb buttermilk dressing absolutely tied it together. * My daughter's entrée: Bratwurst, which disappeared quickly, so that tells you what you need to know. Service setup is counter-service for food with table drop-off, and drinks are ordered directly at the bar. It's efficient, friendly, and gives the whole place an easygoing "European beer hall meets Charlottesville neighborhood spot" feel. Kardinal Hall is one of those places where good food, good architecture, and good energy all line up. If you're in town -- especially visiting UVA -- this is a must-stop.
