Firstly, you need signs at cash register, sales associate should tell clients they cannot under any circumstances return hair that is open or unraveled by salon. I spent more than seventy dollars and less than an hr later the store is treating me like a thug. A hardworking customer who always comes in. There are no signs by braiding section. Anytime you use your credit card, they want a picture. I doubt they treat white customers like that. False advertisement. They shouldn't rely on fine print, black and brown staff being rude to customers and dismissive. This is the fourth time I've been in this store and experienced such egregious behavior. read more

I recently purchased a water hair sprayer from this store for $8.99, and when I got home, I found that it didn't work. I returned the next day to address the issue, and what should have been a simple exchange turned into an extremely frustrating experience. The cashier was initially polite, and I provided the receipt without any issue. But after waiting for over 15 minutes for assistance, the staff member who finally came out to help me was incredibly rude( I'm assuming she's the manager or owner). Not only did she immediately raise her voice, but she also became hostile, arguing with me instead of trying to resolve the problem. I calmly called her out on her attitude, but instead of backing down, she just continued to escalate the situation, getting louder and more defensive with every response. It was completely unnecessary and unprofessional. After all this, she finally "found" a replacement bottle--but then tried to charge me an extra $3 for it. I couldn't believe it. The audacity of being treated poorly and then being asked to pay more for something that should have been a simple exchange was beyond frustrating. The worst part is that this experience soured my entire view of the store. I was really looking forward to a positive resolution, but instead, I was treated with such disrespect that I'm seriously considering no longer patronizing this business. It's a shame, because I had high hopes for supporting local businesses in the area. But after this, I would advise others to look elsewhere and support other small businesses that actually value their customers. To add some balance, I did have a kinda alright experience with the braiders upstairs (however, the conditions of which they braid is concerning and she couldn't care less how much she burnt me and pulled my hair. It was so painful). However, they were a bit kind, I assume only because they realized I understood French. Not sure if I'll be going back to them and wouldn't necessarily recommend them to anyone in need of hair services. In the end, I'm giving away the sprayer for free because I want nothing to do with it or the negative energy from the interaction. This beauty supply store shares a space with African Hair Braiders. The owner should have a chat with the ladies on how to conduct their business more professionally. No one wants to hear someone yelling over their head. They are loud with their personal conversations while braiding your hair. If you correct them on what they are doing wrong with YOUR OWN HAIR they get VERY defensive. They are NOT empathetic on how they tug and pull your hair out when combing it out. Most of them have hair loss of their own and they seem not to care if they pull some of your hair out. They are not upfront with the cost of the style which they should be. So, be VERY AWARE of the braiders and their actions. The supply store itself is good, they have almost anything you can imagine for your hair needs. I would have given them a higher rating, but you're only as good as the people you conduct business with. As minorities we should support one another in business; however, as customers we shouldn't accept unprofessionalism, poor quality service, and lack of decorum. I like to think of this place as hair product heaven. It's located right on 125th and easily accessible via 1, 2, 3, A, B, C, D lines. There are literally aisles and aisles of conditioners, shampoos, hair lotions, relaxer, texturizers, hair clips, rubber bands...I mean the list is truly never-ending. I've only been here once with a random product in mind that they didn't have in stock. They carry most mainstream brands and lots that cater to people of color and various ethnic hair textures. You can get lost doing endless browsing here. They also sell every possible hair appliance you might want to try on your hair. If it's your thing, you can pick up a weave or get your hair braided in the upstairs salon area. Personally, I don't want anything on my body that isn't growing from me organically. I see lots of hair extension/weave types and styles, though so if you're in need of hair, this is also your place. I must say the employees are as helpful as they can be, but with many there is a language barrier. The prices are fair and they often give out $5 discount cards after you spend a certain amount of money. I come here regularly for my hair care needs, and often times just to see if there's anything that smells good and might be fun to play with. I've purchased conditioning caps, combs, brushes, bobby pins...they've really got it all. I can't speak for the hair styling services (or the quality of the hair they sell), but if you're just in need of your everyday stuff, or some more professional styling tools/products, you'll probably find whatever you're looking for. read more

Ok place but they really need to do their homework and stock the latest hot items. Staff is rude and lazy. One salesperson bitched that I was buying an extra product and actually loudly said, "She claimed she only wanted one!" and sucked her teeth! I had to complain to the manager. Also DO NOT allow the weird African women wandering around offering to do your hair. I got roped into doing crochet braids because the woman told me they had a salon upstairs. Instead they walk you into the back entrance, which is filthy and unsanitary, where they have set up some metal chairs and old mirrors. The women kept poking me with the needle, which is scary because God knows how many other people they use those same needles on. Each customer should be made to buy their own! Plus, no washing of hands, etc between customers. I don't know what I was thinking. I got blood tests done after that experience to make sure I didn't catch anything! Just say "no" to that. And it is completely ridiculous for any business in a major city to close at 7:45 and 6:45pm. You can go to the suburbs and find beauty supplies open later. That is stupid. The stylist upstairs are awesome. I've gotten my hair braided here for years and also recommended others. Today was different, there was one woman behind the register who was very dismissive and disrespectful. It's sad that i can spend so much money in this business and in trying to make more purchases get treated with such disrespect.. even was referred to a woman in the back wig section named "Sonia or Sonja" who was also dismissive and disrespectful when i attempted to inform her of my concern. Let me just say, I love this beauty supply store. I find my hair dyes, my Dominican conditioners, all my clips- everything I need. Sometimes I even find cute Essie nail polish for $5! But on Saturday I visited and while everyone was quite attentive and nice, the girl at the cash register, Elizabeth was quite a jerk. First she was hiding because she didn't want to ring people up, then when I went to pay I saw some adorable tweezers which I showed to my friend and she charged me for them even though I was just showing them with no intention to buy. Then when I told her I want the money back she said I couldn't return it I could only get something of the the same value. When I asked for suggestions she pointed towards things that costed more. I bought hair supplies from the store, then went to the braiding section in back of the store to get my hair done. The hygiene standards there are very poor. The place is very filthy. The restroom was extremely dirty with no soap or tissue. It was a very terrible, awful, and sickening experience! I'll never go back. Compared to any other hair store I've been to, this is surprisingly a classier/higher end place to buy hair extensions. The store is well-lit, clean, and comfortable for taking your time and shopping around. The people working there are helpful, carefully explaining different styles and colors of weaves and opening boxes to show what is inside. My experience at many other hair stores is that the more questions you ask and the more hair boxes you want to see, the more irritated the salespeople get. Not here. They helped me find a perfect match in under five minutes. I paid $130 for one box of human hair which I will use to make clip-in extensions. Oh man where do I start with this place !! I went to this place once to buy hair and the guy was extremely helpful and honest about the hair I was buying. I just went again because I wanted to get my hair braided , I just wanted one full side braid. The lady took us upstairs and did mine and my best friends hair. My best friend asked for 2 short braids in the front to tie it in the back with her hair lose. Since we first got there, she kept telling my best friend that she needed to buy hair for that. My best friend has really long hair and it's all natural. The girl who was telling us this, her name is FATIMA !!!! Let me tell you a little story about this place. I am a beauty supply store fanatic. As in, I could be broke as hell, and still go inside a beauty supply store. So I've been coming here a few times, considering beauty supply stores in the UWS area aren't all that diverse. Yes, I do travel just for some hair/beauty products. Customer service all depends on who is there and how they FEEL like acting. Some will be very nice while other will give you an attitude. My recent and WORST experience is here is the upstairs. Upstairs, which is quite convienient, is a hair salon/waxing/eyelash place. #1 the hair braiding is overpriced. #2 my eye lashes. I did my eyelashes literally 5 days ago, and they're falling off. I know how to are for lashes, and for them to be ripping off already, separating and such, is ridiculous. They charged 12 for a natural look and next door charges 10 and they do it better! I'm so dumb for thinking they would do it better. Just know, I will never be going there again for anything by to buy my hair products. read more

As a creature of habit, I continued to shop here even after I moved. So...I traveled to this store all the way from Queens. I arrived 10min prior to their closing time. So I stood there and called the store and told the lady who answered that I was standing at the front door, locked out. She said "We close at 7." I said "I know, which puzzles me as to why the doors are locked. I came all the way here from Queens and I know what I want to purchase. I just need one item." Especially since products in my area are expensive. I travel out of my way to come here for their variety of products and great prices. They also have a reward system. One of the cashiers gives me samples and actually got me hooked on a product called curl sealer which is amazing (i have bought two bottles because it's an amazing product) I'm not sure of her name but she's the only with the natural hair always helpful and informative. NOW. If anybody approaches for hair braiding just say no, don't waste your time or money. I went there originally for the Lyna wig by Bobbi boss. I didn't like how the wig looked on me, so I decided let me get a protective style, I been wanting blonde Marley twist for a while. So I'm explaining to the lady Fatima what I want and she's on the phone running her mouth, she tells me to get 5 packs of the Marley hair, no problem . So I want these twist large and a few I said can you do like 20-30 twist in total she said it's enough , so they start on my hair, I'm falling asleep before I know the girl who was helping her tells me I need 4 more packs of hair, but you just said I need 5 that's it. She lies and says she told me 10 originally she did but then switched it up to 5, I could already tell it was way too much hair for my liking. I prefer triangle parts or boxed part she did neither just grabbed the hair, no parts nothing. I ended up spending 30 more dollars for the hair. Which puts m y total at 60 dollars for hair, I didn't want to spend that much, the whole time Fatima is running her mouth, eating and being lazy. I'm looking in the mirror and I could already tell I hate it, I'm telling her it's too much hair she wants to tell me it's not. I get into it with her and I tell her I have to walk around like this not you, she said to the other lady I don't know what to do now, I said just finish it. At this point it looks horrible. 9 packs of hair for Marley twist. She tells me once she put the hot water on it, it will be fine, it doesn't change the style or thickness I didn't want. This is exactly why I don't trust any salon with my hair, I thought I would help myself with not having to deal with my hair for this week but I should of just gotten the lyna wig and let them braid my hair and wore it week until I could go to my friend or my other hair lady on West 125th at Elegance hair braiding. Beware of Fatima there, she can't be trusted and is very lazy. Don't waste time or money at this braiding shop. As soon as I got home I took my hair out and washed and conditioned. Thanks to the cashier for giving me a sample of the growth oil it really helped my sore scalp after this horrible experience. I informed the clerk that decided to purchase a wig she supplied me with the ticket for it while I searched for a second 1. At that time she informed me that I reached a 3 wig limit of trying on wigs. I was taken aback. Especially since I watched a loud woman next to me try on at least 8 wigs with no problem. When I am spending my money I will not allow any restrictions or limits to trying on any items that I will purchase. Don't. Do. It. She approached new on the street. Only by second time getting braids in my life. First time was 5 yrs ago, and I think it was at Aminata on 125th, but I agreed. She cut off my mid-back hair to shoulder length in some areas when removing my DIY Senegalese twists. My hair grows fast, I love cuts, it was going up in braids, anyway...I didn't care that much. I'll deal with it when I take these down for good, but it was annoying. The work was shoddy, she left the braids uneven and between the last 3-4 inches was undone. I had to go home and try to twist the bottom of the braids, and I had to cut to even them up. She pulled my hair line so bad I had to insist that she redo several braids along my hair line, and she complained about that. She had add excuse for everything: my short, severely blunt cut hair that was previously mid-back and is now three inches in the back was not a result of her impatiently chopping my hair off, but looked "normal". And, the tightly pulled hair gave me severe bumps and irritation, & swelling at the hair line. I'm going to Aminata for a redo only 10 days, after $150, plus hair, including a $30 take down fee. ...She gave me a card as I left. Several actually. I only held onto them so I could write a review. Never again. This is why I prefer to do my own hair. I'll learn how to braid my own hair yet, sheesh! ...I write the above yesterday and had to come back. One of braids literally fell off, breaking off my hair with it. This is only 11 days in. No matter how many times I told her she was having too little hair, she wouldn't listen. The incident went on at the other location down the block ....I am familiar with this store and relatively know all the workers there. I speak to everyone and have a very upbeat personality. If anyone that has shopped there can relate, I spend over $100 which qualifies for a $5 off coupon EVERY time I visit and they told me that the restroom was reserved for hair braiding clients only. So someone coming inside spending LESS than I do could potentially use the restroom and I couldn't. I recently got my hair braided upstairs in the beginning of September. The stylist respected my wished and I was glad. I need my hair done at that exact moment because I had photo day the day after, had been to several braiding places that say they don't braid natural hair (it had to be straightened --- what even??) So the fact that I was in a time crunch and they still helped was a plus. I told her I wanted a bit of color in my extensions and she steered me the right way! I loved her. I had asked for 6 ghana braids but after examining my bald spot, she recommended 8 so that 1. it can cover it and 2. so it won't add so much tension on the hair surrounding it, which would cause it to break and make the spot bigger.
