Nora is absolutely amazing and super educated in her craft. She's constantly using new techniques to perfect my hair every single time. I have yet to have a stylist who remembers exactly what I like in a blowout and what products work well with my hair. The way Nora does a balayage its NEXT LEVEL. Ulta at 86th street has a nice layout & is well lit & setup of goods is okay. It is VERY cool this location has a salon in the back. HOWEVER, customer service is nearly non-existent. I greeted the cashier girl & she barely acknowledged me & just started scanning my items. The problem came when one of my items didn't have a bar code. (The particular item doesn't come in a box). The cashier girl opened my jar of moisturizer & lifted the inner lid.. smh!. Then she went to ask the employee managing the checkout area to find the price. Throughout the whole transaction I felt she was being very dismissive & I could feel the underlying attitude she had. She clicked thru all the screens (past the pay with your Ulta CC screen- apparently if you don't have the physical card or anything it's required for you to show physical govt ID). I don't know what her rush was (the store was pretty empty & no one was waiting to checkout) but I also didn't want to be in the store any longer than possible so I used my card & paid. Then I looked at my total & I noticed my total didn't account for the member savings event % off. She immediately got mad at me & defensive. Meanwhile all this time I had my Ulta app open to my savings barcode.. she had not looked at it once! It was all sorted out by the cashier lead but man I'm NEVER going to this Ulta again. Apparently because she teased it, it then was considered a formal updo and I was charged $101! You're kidding me! The whole appointment still ended in 30 min versus the formal updo would have been an hour long appt. I won't be returning even though Nora was very nice! I shop at Ulta often; this is THE WORST experience I have ever encountered at an Ulta store. Firstly, the employees were ugly - no makeup (this is a beauty store), dressed dusty and disheveled (associates had their guts hanging out), hair was unkept and they had cynical attitudes. This cashier named Crystal who I have a bad encounter with was definately profiled me. She must of felt since I was asian with a big backpack on that meant I was stealing. The fact is, I made a purchase the night before at this incompetent store. The items I purchased was the moroccan hair moisturizer, paul mitchell tea tree shampoo and a pack of face wipes. The original cashier Ashley stupidly scanned the shampoo twice rather than the pack of face wipes. I came back to the store the following day with my receipt and items trying to explain to cashier Crystal what happened. She was clueless and proceeded to tell her lead cashier Luzela that I was scamming and trying to get a price adjustment. I also had a coupon that I wanted to be honored since I used it the night before. I was simply trying to get rung up for the proper items and use my $15 off coupon which these two girls would not honor and tried to insinuate that I was stealing. The lead cashier then proceeded to state cameras need to be checked to see what happened with an attitude like I was trying to scam the place. This was so u called for and unprofessional. I ended up returning everything since clearly this store did not deserve my hard working money. I highly recommend noone shopping here. They are unprofessional and displayed poor customer service. I had a terrible experience at the Ulta Beauty on East 86th Street today. I went to the store to return two items purchased online. I was told I could not return those items at the store because they do not accept "Happy Returns" at that location. They said I could make a "Happy Return" at a Staples nearby. When I went to Staples, they needed the QR code. I went to the Ulta website online. It said I needed to make my returns at the store. I went back to the store. They said they could not take Happy Returns at that location because they did not have the "return totes" to send it back. They said I had to go to another Ulta location, but could not confirm whether the two nearest locations had the "return totes" either. I decided to return a third item that I had ordered online and had picked up that day. The same manager, "Shayra" informed me I had to wait 72 hours to return any online pick-up items. Wow! What an epic fail. If Ulta makes it this difficult to return items, I am not shopping there anymore. read more

On October 11, I visited the NYC 86th Street Ulta location around 5 PM in search of a specific lip liner. A retail worker referred me to a makeup artist named Nicole, who was unhelpful and rude throughout the interaction. Her attitude was unprofessional, and she appeared to lack knowledge about makeup, especially when offering matte lipsticks instead of the lip liner I had requested. The manager Sorayi wasn't any better. Im always disappointed when I step into Ulta Additionally, I noticed that the store was quite disorganized. The makeup section was so disarrayed that it was difficult to distinguish between products, and items were scattered across the area, making it challenging to shop. read more

Really disappointed in the Salon! They now charge for blow drying your hair after getting services done such as a cut and color! Really disgusted after paying nearly $300 including tip. This review is specifically for Melissa D. at the salon! I just had my 2nd highlight/cut with Melissa and she totally killed it just like last time! This particular day I had a very traumatic commute to the salon and was not in the talking mood, which I informed her of. Melissa told me to "sit back and relax", and she let me sit in silence for the entirety of my service, which I so very much needed. Stellar customer service right there. Now on to the highlights and cut... when I say she gets it- she GETS IT! I showed her a couple photos of the vibe I was going for and she perfectly communicated back to me what I was asking for. Then she executed on that PERFECTLY! Seriously I could not be happier. The cut I was less picky about so I let her work her magic. We took off 3" per my request and added some long layers for movement. I'm a Platinum member, less than $100 shy of Diamond, i.e. the type of customer that you would think Ulta would be interested in keeping happy. Alas, I'm very unhappy with the company because they took away my access to their app! The standard practice is to support operating systems at least three versions back; however, now the Ulta app is only available to iPhone users with iOS 17 or higher! For reference, the latest version is iOS 18. My phone has the 16 version and so unless I buy a new device, I am excluded from using the Ulta app and all the advantages using the app entails. I now can only use the ULTA.com website, which is an absolute nightmare to navigate via phone. I might note that I have no issues using the Sephora app. In short, Ulta does not seem to provide its technology department with sufficient resources and/or management to support customers who don't throw away their perfectly functional phones for the latest model. read more

However I do have a piece of advice for the management - please please make sure your reps in ulta are knowledgeable of all the products or at least most, in the store. Came in just to inquire. I have no knowledge of anything makeup outside of a good lipstick and mascara. I wanted to come in and see if i can find my color match to dabble a bit, and gain some knowledge on products and mainly just find the right color for my skin tone. I walked aimlessly around the store at first, just trying to feel it out to see if i can figure it out. With all of the cosmetics, and different colors, i was legit lost. I asked this one worker who was standing at a display by the door. I figured i can ask her, after all, she is an employee in the store. So i greet her and ask for her help. No greeting back. She clearly had no intention on helping. She asked me what am i looking for? I say I'm trying to find a color match for my skin tone. So she asked okay, foundation or concealer? I politely told her, I'm really unsure because I've never worn makeup. She goes, ooh -_- . I'm so confused as to what is happening. As she isn't giving any other info. She is now just starting in the air, as if I'm a bother to her. So, i say never mind, and leave the store. instead of spending my money here with them, I'll go to Sephora instead where the customer service is much better. It was so off putting, i figure I'm not the only newbie to makeup, so these customer service people should be able to at least point me in the right direction. This was a horrible first experience. This will be my first and last time stepping foot in an ulta. I will take my coins to Sephora where at least i know i won't feel like a fish out of water, and i can actually get help when asked. Nice for those that can afford the Salon Treatment. I went in to inquire about getting my hair cut. Cuts start at $57 dollars. Professional beauticians are licensed, certified, and have continuing education. I was informed by a very nice salon receptionist. She was gracious and patient with all my questions. For your information the cut includes wash and blow dry. This store has great brand name products in beautiful displays. I did see a tester for lipstick. I often think of the news reports about the bacteria on the make up testers. I'm glad I don't need anything right now. This location is huge. They open very early in the morning. The security at the door was very pleasant. There are numerous employees and registers for check out. The store is bright, appealing to the senses and clean. I had the desire to buy something! I needed to get a feel for what they offer and the price range. These are not Walmart prices by any means. Like I said, if you live the luxurious lifestyle, shop here. I saw coupons on their website. I checked in again with reception and they told me I had to wait another 15 minutes for my 30 minute blowout. No thanks! This review is for the haircut service. I wanted a last minute haircut in case NYC had a shut down, so I scheduled a last minute haircut with master Stylist Jen. She was very reassuring and this was my first dry haircut. She dried it to look air dried, so she could see how my hair looked, and after telling her what I wanted, she was super attentive and cut my hair. After that she gave it a real blow dry. I am EXTREMELY satisfied with the blow dry and this stylist. The website says 80 dollars, but she is 90. She did honor the 80. I would and will book again and believe she's worth every cent. read more

Today, I met one of the worst rep at the 86th street store. I walked in to buy a red Chanel lipstick. 1. The rep gave me a very hard paper to clean up my hands. The store did not have the shade I wanted so, I tried another brand. 2. As I kindly declined purchasing what the rep suggested...She WALKED AWAY: not a thank you come again. She pretended I did not exist and left me with my hand covered in red lipstick. I found some water to wash myself. Fortunately another rep asked if I was ok. I wish this person had been helping me. Hey, don't judge me. They offer a nice selection of men's cologne here too. This UES location that recently opened on 86th and 3rd is pretty massive. My gal loves Ulta but she has only been able to shop at their Long Island location near where her mom lives. When we walked by last week and dropped in I was blown away by how large this place is. The rent for this location must be phenomenal, but they have such a large inventory of items from the professional to the everyday regular patron that by volume and foot traffic alone they will probably cover it. Oh, and there is a full hair salon in here too. Friendly helpful staff, and the checkout lines moved quickly. Sephora up the street now has some serious competition for the beauty junkies in the neighborhood. read more
