Parking is hard to find and it always seems busy but they also have lots of helpful staff that are very knowledgeable. It's better to book an online appointment because walking in it's not going to happen. I've had nothing but excellent experiences here. We've bought laptops, phones, tablets, and a gaggle of accessories here and it's always been great. Recently, I had to replace my iPhone and spent a little while with one of their tech guys - wish I had caught his name, because he was such a help and he deserves a shout out for his ability to help me at the same time as another customer - without it feeling awkward or rushed. This dude could multitask just like the computer he was fixing! I am a big fan of the Apple idea of pre-reserving products and Genius time, because it really helps streamline the wait in this popular store; while they do a decent job at demonstrating their product lines, it is still common for you to not be able to walk out of the store with the latest gear because of high demand. I almost took off a star for parking - finding street curbside parking is like finding a purple unicorn who farts moonbeams. The only other nearby option is an overpriced parking deck, which is awkward in contrast to the speed and efficiency of the Apple Store itself, the nexus of my Western addiction to consumerism and all things Apple. Couldn't be more disappointed with the attitude that the Apple employee showed me. He was rude and disrespectful the entire time I was dealing with him. It seems pretty clear that he hates his job and he made that crystal clear to me in the curt and impolite fashion in which he was speaking to me. What happened: 1. My iPhone started heating up, so I went to visit this Apple store, asking if a technician could take out the battery from the phone, so as to prevent fire or explosion hazard due to the heating phone. 2. The Apple staff in the store refused the service request for taking out the battery, with a rude attitude. In particular, one staff member said he was the manager and he explicitly told another staff member to repeat to me exactly what he (the manager) just said. The other staff member appeared hesitant at first, and finally had to comply and repeated what the manager said. This felt quite strange. What I think and feel: Regarding No. 2, the "no battery service" policy is probably a company-wide policy, not completely the fault of the staff at this store, but this policy completely ignores the dangers of fire or explosion hazard due to Apple's own malfunctioning iPhone parts. Besides, the attitude of the Apple staff member who claimed to be the manager should be less rude when he explained the policy, and he shouldn't force another staff member to repeat exactly what he (the manager) had said to me. Even if it's a company-wide policy, there are better ways to show it. As a customer, I felt VERY BAD about this experience. I appreciate the support and advice of a few other staff members during the above process. read more

I LOVE the Apple Store in Shadyside! I have purchased two MacBook Pros there in the last 10 years. And I also went there when I had some questions about my new iPhone, which I had purchased from Virgin Mobile. I walked in without an appointment in the evening on a weeknight after work, and of course, they were super busy. I expected to be waiting an hour or two, but I was seen in just a half hour, and the person who helped me was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and kind. He answered all my questions in about 5 minutes! Every time I have gone to that store, I am always impressed with the level of knowledge and expertise of the staff. Apple products are expensive, but you get what you pay for. The company really do an excellent job of training their staff in all of their products. So when you ask a question, they either know the answers, or they will find someone who does. I started out using a Dell PC, and I was constantly plagued with viruses and malware, in spite of having all of the latest, most up-to-date anti-virus, anti-malware, and anti-spyware software, plus both a software and hardware firewall! Being on the Macintosh Operating System is PEACE OF MIND! I haven't had to worry about that crap in over a decade now! My current MacBook Pro is now 6 years old, and it's just as fast and awesome as the day I bought it! My old Dell PC got progressively slower and slower over time. Not my trusty, reliable Mac! Anyway, I know I'm supposed to be reviewing the store, and not their products, but it's hard to separate the two. And now that I'm using my first iPhone, I'm an even bigger fan. I had to wipe and reset my previous smartphone (Samsung Galaxy Note 3) twice due to malware, in spite of having anti-virus and anti-malware software installed! Since I switched to an iPhone, no such problems ever! And peace of mind. The combination of excellent, high-quality customer service, and excellent, high-quality products that are much less likely to be stricken with viruses, malware, spyware, etc., makes me a loyal Apple customer. read more

Someone didn't fully zipper their iPhone in the handlebar case, and it took a dive on the pavement, shattering the screen. I biked to Apple Shadyside and they were able to get me in to replace the screen. I biked home, drove back, and it was done! Thank goodness for AppleCare! That store has always been amazing for me. I am usually extremely understanding since I worked in the customer service industry for several years but this is just ridiculous. Why even make appointments if you can't keep them? This whole situation is Apple's fault for making a faulty product then making people wait months to get appointments and then wait again for hours past their appointment in the store. It is now noon, and I am still waiting for my 11:15a appointment. Second appointment in two weeks that I have now waited over thirty minutes for service... What's really frustrating is I didn't drop or damage my device, my device has a "known issue" where the antiglare coating on the screen peels. I've used this as my pick up for 5 different items I have ordered on the Apple store app. Every time from walk in, wait, get helped and leave it only takes about 15 mins. I acknowledge right off the bat this review is completely unhelpful but I really want to tell someone how much I HATE APPLE AND ALL APPLE PRODUCTS! Hate! It really isn't the Walnut Street Store; they are as helpful as they can be, I guess, but I still hate apple. I have a couple apple products-an iPad and an iPod- and I am soooo sick of having a problem, going to the Apple store and them giving me the B.S. that certain things are not working because my home computer is not a macbook. I realize this is true, but really? It's really annoying. For some random reason I can only get my computer to 'recognize' my iPod every fifth time I plug it in, which makes it impossible to add/delete music and on occasion, charge it! My iPod is old, I'll admit that, but that's another gripe. I am not a tech geek who loves new electronics. If it plays music, I'm golden, and I resent the fact that apple comes out with a new product every 8 months which makes my iPod so obsolete that freaking iTunes will not download music to it. God... did I mention I freaking hate apple! The icing on the cake is when I went to get help from the "genuis bar" (yeah, uh huh) they cannot help me, told me if I call assistance I will be charged and when I asked for someone higher up the apple food chain besides the store manager, who wouldn't/couldn't help me, they told me there is 'disconnect' (her word, not mine) between the store and the website so it would do me no good. Don't worry folks, they're trying to 'bridge the gap' though. I love how they are one entity when it's convenient for them and separate when it's convenient for them. God, I hate apple. I'm not disappointed by the hour and a half it took me to talk to a technician, and I'm not disappointed by how anybody treated me there. What I am very disappointed by, however, is the new norm of an Apple product experience. About 1 year and 3 months ago I purchased a brand new Macbook Air. Previously I had owned a black Macbook and had no problems with it in 5 years of ownership. It was by far one of the best products I've ever owned I spent a lot of money on the Air and expected it to be just as durable as my previous computer. Fast forward to today (90 days out of warranty) and I got the service battery notification- so either something was terribly wrong or the battery was just oddly low on juice in its lifetime. After the wait, the technician told me that although my battery had only really used up one fifth of its 1,000 charge lifecycle that it was verging on failure and my RAM was not recognizing her OS and that could mean an entire logic board replacement. Thankfully it only turned out to be the former after a 36 hour wait. I talked to someone at Apple on the phone and they told me it would cost $129 to replace the battery. I refuted that although this computer was 90 days out of warranty the technician told me it was the battery at fault and would prefer it be replaced for free (I also saw this was a very common issue for other owners of the same model). Long story short, as nice as possible the person on the other end of the line told me they would not replace it for free. I tried again with another person, and they wouldn't budge either. I told them I was disappointed they wouldn't stand behind their products as products that should last, and I am seriously considering not buying another Apple product. Apple products used to stand for superiority in quality, service and reliability. But recently as they've made their lines increasingly proprietary and only serviceable under Apple they have no incentive to make things last. Now you just ditch the old and buy the new at ridiculous cost or have it repaired at an absurd premium by Apple, or spend way too much money on their warranty to get that extra piece of mind. I had a similar issue with my iPhone 5, when the sleep/wake button stopped working. When I looked it up online, I noticed it was a common problem that is fixed even when you're outside of your warranty. So I went to the Apple store, and they claimed that because my phone had a dent it was not eligible to be fixed for free and wanted $170 for the repair. That's like saying because someone broke the mirror on your car it wouldn't be eligible for a recall for an airbag. Absurd. It's really disappointing to see a company that used to be focused on the quality and durability of its products instead focused on extracting more money from customers and watering down the ownership experience It's a shame, really. I no longer think of Apple as a company that builds durable products. I don't think I can give up the Mac experience, as I've had one for so long and don't like how PCs function, but I absolutely will not be buying another Apple tablet or mobile device. And while I am buying another Mac, the quality of Apple's products and support has seriously gone downhill. I've never had as little confidence in a product being long-lasting and durable. And with the horrible software issues they have with every release, like when the Wi-Fi on my Mavericks upgrade would stop working all the time, or my iPhone would reset with the new iOs release, you have to wonder, where is the Quality Assurance testing? I think there are too many good options out there when it comes to mobile devices, and I'd spend my money elsewhere. read more

I must say you never know what kind of service you'll receive when you walk in a retail store. What's fantastic about this store (and I hope other Apple stores) is that the costumer service is fantastic! It goes just beyond ringing you up for your fancy new Apple product. It's actually taking the time to talk to you and see what you need or what product would work best for you. They don't work on commission and that takes a lot of pressure off them. The sales people actually seem like the ENJOY their job! How novel! It's rare to find that in a retail store. And even though this place is always packed to the gills you're never left standing there for even 1 minute without someone asking you if you need help. They're always well staffed and eager to help you out. Again, it's just very rare these days to have such great costumer service, Good company, good product, good costumer service...it just trickles down. I'm an Apple convert fo sho! read more

I called this Apple Store four times before giving up. I'm sure the employees who work there are very competent, responsive and probably even hip. However I couldn't ask them my question because the automated phone system pushed me to Apple Support for billing issues despite specifically asking for a human. Okay, some Apple products (::cough:: iPad ::cough::) are a special kind of tacky, but anyone who's used OSX for a while knows that Apple makes a mean computer. So, when my old Powerbook (now no longer with us, unfortunately, and now I'm a Linux user,) lost its screen because of an unfortunate tripping-over-the-screen-like-an-idiot accident, I had to call these folks. Now, for some context, back then I lived in Greensburg, which is a bit of a haul from Shadyside. This becomes important. I call them up to ask about what the price might be to replace the screen. Pretty common question, and it's pretty obvious that the screen needs to be replaced. I used to build computers, so I have some idea of what's going on. What do they tell me over the phone? "You need to bring it in and have our 'Geniuses' look at it before we can price anything." "...but... I need a new screen. I know I need a new screen. Give me an idea of what it costs." "No, you need to bring it in." Really, Apple store? That's not customer service, that's just idiotic. I understand that you deal with a bunch of people who know nothing about their products and have their lawyers on speed dial, but please, be willing to work with me. Anyway, I make the haul from Greensburg to Shadyside, broken laptop in tow. Take the laptop in, and go to the "Genius bar." (y'know, why don't we just call it "support desk" instead? Come on.) Wait for a while, and then a while more, and then the Apple Store saved itself. I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but the fellah who helped me out proved that even Apple's monstrous support department can have a soul. He looked at the computer, and told me "Do not get this fixed here. It will cost you $1200. You can get it done for $500 at this website that isn't affiliated with Apple." So, after some tribulation, the Apple Store ended up being a pleasant experience. That guy saved me $700! And he really could have just towed the party line and let Apple ream me. That was pretty cool. Still, only three stars. If I tell you I know what's wrong over the phone, believe me. read more

I've had very mixed experiences at other Apple Stores in the past, but when you drop your iPhone and shatter the screen, you know where you're headed. Luckily for me, my no-good-very-bad day had a happy ending, because I got great customer service at the Pittsburgh location. Making an appointment for my phone online was easy. When I got in from Greensburg more quickly than anticipated, it was okay, and they were able to get me started almost immediately. After signing a few forms on an iPad (including a release that if the fix doesn't work, you'll be paying $299 for a new phone-- eek!) they took my phone off to the back and told me it would be ready in an hour or so. The Genius I was working with was very courteous and gave me directions to his favorite coffee shop down the street. When I came back an hour or so later, my phone was fixed and checking out was easy. Replacement glass isn't exactly cheap, but it did cost slightly less than the quote I got online. The Genius I talked to this time revealed that mine was the 3rd shattered glass phone they'd fixed that day, so A) you can feel a little bit better, you're not the only klutz out there and B) they have plenty of practice in glass repair. I hope to NOT need to go back to the Apple Store any time soon, but if I do, I know I'll be well taken care of. Tip: the parking garage around the corner takes credit cards and isn't unreasonable. read more

I definitely enjoy the way out of the store it's so clean and white and everything is so organized beautifully. You don't have to struggle when you walk around to try to figure out what you're looking at or what it does. There's lots of Apple mates which is what I like to call them, standing around to help you figure out how to work this and how to work that and the store was full of them. I was here to pick up the latest update from my computer the snow leopard. It was really easy, all I had to do was just tell them my name and show them my confirmation number and they immediately brought out the disc for me and I was on my way. The only downside to the store is it's typically too busy so when I first got there I kind of stood around for like a good five minutes waiting for somebody to come and ask me if I needed any help. Unfortunately I had to track somebody down myself because all the employees look like they weren't even interested in talking to me. Extremely disappointed in Apple! They claim to be all about customer experience, but when they dropped the ball on their check in process (was trying to get a battery replacement for my dad's phone), they did absolutely nothing to make it right! The guy checking me in did something wrong, so I waited 45 minutes before I saw 4 different people that clearly came in after me get helped. So I went up to him to ask him, and he said "I will get someone to help you right now". Nothing happened for a little while (by this time I'm really impatient), so I went up to ask for the store manager, and this guy who claims to be in charge of their help area says he will send me someone (doesn't ask a single question about why I wanted the store manager or what exactly happened). Then this young woman comes over and a few minutes later tells me it will be 3:00 before the phone can be finished (that is 2:45 after I walked in!). I tell her that isn't acceptable and what can they do since they dropped the ball and left me waiting (I believe this has now added over an hour to the original timing), and she tells me she wants the details from so they can make sure my experience doesn't happen to anyone else else (!!!!). I made it clear that this doesn't address my issue ... and decided to leave (couldn't stay that long). It was a terrible experience with a very poor attempt at resolution! read more

I recently had the misfortune of spilling water on my MacBook Pro and killing it. After letting it dry out for 36 hours, I tried powering it on with no luck. Fearing the worst, I took it to the Shadyside Apple Store to see if they could diagnose the problem. Everyone there was super helpful during the entire process. In particular, Steve (mohawk guy with a barcode tatoo) and a twenty-something girl whose name escapes me (tall, thin, with medium-length brown hair -- sorry I forgot your name!) really did a great job in quickly figuring out the issue and getting me set up for the repair process. They even let me hang out at the genius bar to back up my hard drive (which miraculously survived) to my own external drive that I brought in. I dropped the MacBook Pro off for repairs on Tuesday around 2pm, and by Thursday at noon, I got an email that it was back already! Overall the repair (a "tier 4" repair) cost a flat rate of $755 plus tax, which stung quite a bit. But they basically rebuilt my machine (new case, new display, new trackpad, new motherboard, new battery) and saved me about 400 bucks over buying an identical MBP. They also left my hard drive intact, so I didn't have to reconfigure my entire system. Three lessons learned: don't be a dumbass and spill water on your laptop; make sure to back up using Time Machine just in case (I got SUPER lucky here); and Apple's support and repair process is great. If you have to go through what I did, be glad you got a Mac and be glad you live near the Shadyside Apple Store. Thanks guys. read more

I have returned multiple items for replacements and purchased several Apple items for various phones and computers over the past 5 years, and have never been disappointed. Today was a notable record in great service. I came by at the store's opening time and got in and out with a return in less than five minutes! The staff are always happy to answer questions too. Over the past five years, I have become a big fan of Apple. I've purchased three I-Pods, an I-Pad, and I'm on my third IPhone. I'm hoping to buy my first MacBook Pro (with the retina display) over the holidays. Last Saturday morning I took a trip to the Apple store on Walnut Street in Shadyside, PA. I was hoping to get lucky and score an IPhone-5 without having to stand in line for hours. I arrived at 10:00 am, and was surprised to see only a handful of people outside the store, so I decided to stop. While I was in line, an Apple Store worker approached me and asked which phone I was looking for. I told him, and he handed me a card and said, "That's a ticket for your IPhone." He smiled, and walked away. I was definitely getting a phone! As I waited, I could see Apple employees walking about answering questions... they were also providing coffee, snacks, and bottled water to customers that were waiting in line. After only 20 minutes I was greeted by one of the managers of the store, introduced to an associate, and made my way into the store. The young man that helped me took my card, and said, "I'll be right back with your phone." He quickly re-appeared, phone in-hand, and began getting me set up with my IPhone 5. I had to transfer data, and back up my phone which required me to spend an additional hour in the store. During that time I was approached several times by Apple employees who asked me if everything was going ok. "Sure it is," I said. As my phone downloaded, I looked around at the associates and how they were interacting with the customers; they were cordial, polite, and most importantly, patient. I am amazed at the quality of customer service that Apple provides. Every time I have entered the store in Shadyside, my needs have been met (exceeded in fact) and I have always left satisfied. The coordination, professionalism, and expertise that are exercised in this particular store are phenomenal. read more

My Genius Bar was full of friction and double talk. Incredibly strange (especially while involving a suspected manufacturer defect and Apple Care+) in my 15+ years of patronage. Luckily, Apple Support was able to quickly resolve the issue with an express replacement in all of 5 minutes. Set up an appointment for 7pm on a Thursday, came in at 6:30pm and was promptly directed when I asked where the genius bar was. The guy who directed me to the second employee was rude and gave me sass--which is why 4 starts instead of 5, but Tyler, a 3rd year business major at UPitt as of January 2015 (hoping that the manager or someone will see this since I couldn't find an employee feedback form), was very helpful and patientally answered all my questions about what was going on with my iPhone6 and with my questions regarding future triage & resulting treatment. My phone was only a month old, if not less, and the issue turned out to be hardware-related so it was replaced for free despite a small crack in a corner of the screen that my screen protector didn't cover. read more

Came in with a Mophie case for my iPhone that had stopped working. Walked in and the check-in guy had no idea what I was talking about. And as I was about to get turned away, a genius came right up to the front and said he could take care of me. He grabbed another Mophie off the shelf (in a new color, woo), tested it, and even gave me the extra cord just in case I needed it. While we were troubleshooting, we had a conversation about how he's from NY and only here taking care of a family member. When I asked which Apple store he worked at back home (hey, it would be nice to have a connection there!) he laughed and said there is no way he would ever do such a thing. Well, I tried at least. And I got my Mophie fixed in under 10 minutes, so that's a win. read more

I've been there so many times but yesterday but for the first time we had a bad time... We got a light notebook in March and now it is not working anymore. We wait about 1 hour and 40 min. to get my mom notebook checked. Nobody wanna to see it because it had to be a "specialist". We wait wait and always had to explain to a different staff the same problem which couldn't see it. A "specialist" came and saw that my mom note wasn't working as I said and all he just took our note for sending to the technician and collect my information to send my note after 3 business days. If it was only to take her notebook to send it for an examination could another staff do that, no??? Why we had to wait almost 2 hours for only a simple thing? I felt a terrible headache after leaving and my mom which is already over 65 years old was really tired. read more

I was having iMac desktop issues and made an appointment for the Genius Bar. I was helped as soon as I got there without waiting. Brett was able to quickly diagnose my computer issue and fix the problem, despite the fact that he had more than 1 customer. He was also able to explain the issue to me clearly so I knew what was going on (zero computer science background here). The customer service is fantastic and is one of the reasons I keep going back. It's incredibly easy to make an appointment first so you can minimize wait time, since the store is relatively busy no matter what time of day you are there. read more

One of the staff was extremely rude and asked me impolite and ridiculous questions when I asked to replace a broken MacBook Pro, which they sold me yesterday. If you see a beard guy with baseball cap, jeans, and vans shoes on, just stay away. He was even trying to lie to me and refuse offering the help. Very bad experience. They didn't try to sell me on a ton of other stuff. Was to the point, showed me some cool things about what I was getting and asked if I needed anything else, I declined.
