Girl's Night Out at Applebee's started off as a pleasant evening. A group of women get together once a month at various restaurants in Topeka, Kansas. Tonight, we selected Applebee's as a first for our group because we have never dined here before. I ordered the Bourbon Street Chicken and blackened shrimp, plus a side salad. This was brought on a sizzling platter and included fried red potatoes and sautéed onions & mushrooms. Very tasty. Also ordered by another group member was the 7 oz sirloin with the fried red potatoes and a side salad, which was also described as very good. The restaurant was busy when we arrived at 6:00 pm, and fortunately, we were seated right away. It stayed busy even at 8:30 pm when we left. Service is prompt and attentive to our needs, replenishing our beverages and checking on our satisfaction with the order. My only criticism is the singing of the Happy Birthday song to neighboring diners. A very loud young waiter roared above our conversations that we must all stop and pay heed to the singing of the song. He yelled it loud enough for the entire restaurant full of patrons to cease their enjoyment of their companions. This happened twice. The singing was much louder than necessary. Conversation had to stop because you couldn't hear anything other than this irritating group of waiters. Our group found this very rude. We enjoy each others' company and have lots of news to catch up on during our Night Out. Although the food was good, we probably will not dine here again just because of that experience. read more

Somehow I found myself at Applebee's in Topeka again at the request of a friend. This is going to be my absolute last visit ever. I will give up my "girl dates" with my college friend if I have to go to this place again. The food tasted great....but once again, the servers are less than inspired. In fact, our server acted like he was numb. I also noticed a high number of servers always standing around their check-in point talking or at the end of the bar. When I came out of the ladies' room, there were 7 servers talking around the bar. The food tasted OK...but came out looking disgusting. See that picture of my puppy? She was sick last Saturday...and forgive me....but what came out of her mouth that day was identical to the sauce on the Margarita Chicken dish! And once again.....the dish looked like nothing on the menu. The wedge salad, on the other hand, was appetizing coming out but didn't taste that inspired. Seriously Topeka! On a road trip with the family, we chose this Applebee's location based on our general expectation of what foods they offer (basically the same everywhere), and the amount of time to recieve food and depart. My recent visit did not meet these expectations. If I could give the restaurant zero stars, I would. Upon entering, people waiting in line were greeted and seated out of order. There was a request from a seated patron whom arrived at the front podium to ask where her server had gone, and to say that she was tired of waiting. Once seated, my family and I ordered our drinks which arrived quickly, but it was quite a while before the server returned to take our orders. We waited. And waited. And it was nearly an hour before the wrong food came. Then, we were told that they had to re-do the order because they had delivered our food to the wrong table. More waiting. We then got about half our order, and the portions were not as advertised (smaller, fewer pieces, etc.). We were visited several times by workers who repeated apologies, but didn't really offer anything by way of incentive for us to stay, let alone pay for the meal. Long story short, there were several workers whom I only spotted in the kitchen having a lauging, jovial conversation, while one or two people worked in the customer area. I never saw any other people come out from the kitchen the whole time. Long story in a nut shell: poorer than typical food quality, outrageous long wait time, inaccuracies in the order/serve process, and numerous unhappy customers. Pros: Cons:see above. I am sick and tired of giving this place second chances. We tried again to go there today and once again, disappointing experience. We got there around 4:00pm and their AC wasn't working very good at all, so it was pretty warm and humid in there. The place was rather empty because we were early, so we thought, great, we will get served pretty quick... My husband and I decided to go to Applebee's bar and grill. We had not been there in a long time. We got seated and waited for 15 minutes and we did not see a waitress nor a waiter. Had a disappointing experience with Applebee's last night. Busy day so thought I would try their "car side to go" for takeout. The online ordering was fairly straightforward and gave me a time to arrive. I pulled in a couple of minutes early and, seeing the lot was only about half full, expected quick service but that didn't happen. When I parked I one of the designated CSTG slots I saw a female employee look directly at me, not once but twice as if she was confirming I was there for takeout. Great, I thought, she'll pop right out and get me started on paying for my food. Nope, she stood there gabbing with another employee for a few minutes. She finally disappeared ended came out with my food. She was pleasant enough to deal with took my credit card and came back in a reasonable amount of time. I had ordered the pretzel sticks with cheese dip for an appetizer or as well as the steak with veggies on the side. What I found when I got home was pretzels that appeared burnt and a cheese dip that was, to put it mildly, terrible. The taste was off, not spoiled exactly, just off. My steak was cooked properly and was fairly good. However, my side of veggies were overcooked and the garlic mashed potatoes were flavorless. All in all not a good experience. read more

The chicken and shrimp dish was absolutely terrible, everything had so much pepper on it, that I couldn't taste anything but the pepper, the potatoes that came with it had been microwaved so hot that it took 20 minutes for them to be eaten, I would up spendings about 18 bucks for horrible food, I could barely finish half of it, the drink I ordered was a "strawberry Squeeze" it had a strange flavor and was so sweet, I had to leave half of it. read more

So my girlfriend and I were just in there and we had a 15 minute wait when half the restuarant was open, got sat at a dirty table, had the discarded straw wrappers from previous guests dumped in my lap while she was cleaning it, asked for a booth and was given an attitude, then sat for 25 minutes with no one greeting us while tables that came in after us got their drinks and appetizers. It is constant! Consistently bad. Sticky bar due to sweet sugary drinks(and lack of cleaning) Bartender brought me out a drink and set it on the edge of the bar when I went to grab it it fell off. We were asked if we were ready to order 3 times in 5 minutes all while being distracted by the manager who was in awe of our newborn. Then food took forever, the portions were small and burnt. We had the misfortune of having a less than mediocre meal here for lunch today. We came at 11A and the place looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. There was trash on the kitchen floor as I walked by to the restroom. The restroom floor was stickey (?). The carpet was badly stained with crumbs in the edges & corners. it was altogether an unappetizing experience. I could hardly give it a star. Corporate needs to do some shaking up here. The employees here are very awkward, however our waitress Kaylee was very well trained. The bartender Becca is nice and personable as well. On the other hand, Trish, the manager, with more than one encounter, is usually rude and short. Some friends and I called ahead with an unusual request, and received permission by not only the person on the phone, but the hostess as well as the waitress. Trish proceeded to scold her staff in front of customers, and made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Why do I still think it is a good idea to frequent Applebee's when traveling. Thought I'd pop in for a late night snack. Boneless wings were terrible all breading, no meat must of been sitting under a heat lamp for an hour because they looked like shriveled raisins, my ceasar was made without being tossed, and consisted of a mound of dressing and cheese with a few pieces of romaine under. So I walk into Applebee's trying to enjoy a day out with my girlfriend and we get into the restaurant and it takes about 20 minutes for a host to get to us. Then we are finally greeted by two people who have no idea how to sit people. Then sometimes they get a snarky attitude about me wanting to have a booth. So after arguing with the host for wanting to have a booth she finally takes us up to a booth with the saltiest expression on her face. We sit down and wait even LONGER! It takes about 10 minutes for our waiter to get to us and grab our drink order. I specifically said "No ice." She brings out a cup filled with 90% ice and 10% water. Notice they bring you little plates for silverware and everything - I took out all my ice and dumped it on that plate. She comes by and sits down another ICE FILLED CUP. I've been in the service industry and common sense is - if you see them take ice out of a cup, MAYBE THEY DON'T WANT THE ICE???? Goodness gracious Applebee's get some servers with common sense. Our Spinach Dip was cold because it took 30 minutes to get to us. We ordered LIT's and we saw the bartender make them and nobody ran the drinks. So by the time our drinks got to us, they were watered down. This isn't the first time either, we come back HOPING they have improved and it is just garbage people working on garbage island. We have visited two times in the past couple of weeks and it is probably the last chance we give it. Upon entering the doors, it was notably warm and had an odor. Last try the hostesses were terrible and a manager who was "helping" was just as bad. Tonight the hostess gave us no other choice to seat a group of 5 except a booth. When we entered that area, the temperature was at least 85 degrees, so we asked for a different area. She told us that there was no choice and this would be okay for us. We restated it was too hot, but she was unwilling to find another location, so we elected to leave. Managers noted the conversation and did not attempt to assist. I like Applebee's every time I am on vacation because it is convenient and always good. I love their appetizers as well as their salads and burgers. Since we were not that hungry this time around, my family and I shared their big platter appetizer type deal. Their options were great, and we were very satisfied.
