Everytime I go in here it takes me about 10 minutes to get help. Then when I finally do get help the employees are unhelpful and unfriendly. ESPECIALLY the owner, I've never been more disrespected in my life. I wanted to sell a reptile and all he said was "Nope." And I replied "Nope?!" And he said "Oh sorry. No, we're not interested." I was told the day before that they WERE interested, but was just tossed aside today. I work at a nearby pet store and it's always been a known fact that Aqua Imports just has horrible customer service. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. read more

Honestly one of the best fish stores I've ever been to. They maintain high standards of care on all of their livestock - marine and fresh alike, and have one of the best live plant selections in the area. Keep in mind that almost all aquarium plants are grown emersed by nurseries, so they go through a transition phase to switch to submersed growth. While this is happening, the plants may not look as attractive, but it's just part of the process. Most of the staff is knowledgeable or knows who to ask if they don't know, and most of the staff is excellent about ensuring you've been helped. None of this happens without diligent management and present owners that care both about the business and the animals. Yes you will have the occasional person that does not live up to this, but I have found that to be infrequent. If fish are sick, they treat them and will not sell until treatment is complete and the fish are healthy. This is a standard that not all shops maintain, and it makes a huge difference in not losing the livestock you just bought, as well as not introducing illness into your tank. I had this happen when I went to buy oto cats - a small schooling catfish notorious for dying off for no reason when initially introduced to a tank. I decided to wait and come back, and then bought a group of 10, and they've been tremendously healthy. I've never had such a healthy group before, and I'm extremely happy about that. They're also starting to foray into freshwater aquascaping which makes me very excited. First, it's the direction I go, but second, it also shows that they're paying attention to what's happening in the trade, which means they're trying to keep their knowledge fresh and not stagnate. The willingness to continue learning and stay on top of new things in the trade is important and yet another indication of the quality brought forward by the owners. Highly recommend. read more

These guys have to be some of the nicest store owners I've met. I purchased my 120 gallon tank there, plus all the accessories. They are very knowledgeable, and are willing to spend good time with you just talking about helping you set everything up properly. I've yet to buy any livestock because my tank isnt ready yet, but I havent noticed any dead or dying fish on the marine side, I dont venture into the freshwater side at all. read more

The owner staff really takes a great interest in being of service. I'd say the "cashier" help are probably a little less so, so talk with the guy that runs the place. So knowledgeable and helpful, plus clearly wants to make sure you leave with what you need. We needed a good pond treatment to remove chlorine from our pond water and he gave us the most useful and reasonably priced solution possible - even though there was a more expensive option. He will have our business as long as we have our pond. read more

The store itself seems a little fishy when you first walk in, but they have a very expansive selection and knowledgeable staff. Their (what appears to be) main freshwater fish expert John spent over an hour with me talking through my options and gave me some great advice. They refuse to sell sick fish and take good care of all of them (not a single dead fish or dirty tank). Prices are fair and the staff don't try to sell you on the most expensive options. Great store and Ill never being going to PetCo again! They earned a new loyal customer. read more

The staff are always helpful and they have a great selection of tropical fish (and freshwater.) I shop here for everything salt-water. If you are new to salt or fresh water tanks, they will go through and show you exactly what you need as well as explain what you need to do. In the Denver/Boulder area, this is probably the best LFS that supplies saltwater AND freshwater fish. Their plant selection is the largest and healthiest among other stores in the area. Their staff genuinely are into the hobby and try to help others. They are not there just to sell as many fish as they can. read more

I have been coming to this store for over 2 years now. After all of the experiences I have had there I think I am finally ready to write a review that will really portray my concerns with this place. I've given it so many shots and have been very kind and patient with these people, but this is truly one of the most poorly run places I have ever experienced and it all starts with the management. Customer Service: Over the years I have come to this store when it was completely empty and there were 2 or more employees walking around. I had simple questions about some of the fish and made it clear that I was ready to purchase a few. The manager/owner there (short older guy) would always disappear to do something else. One time he told me he would be right back to help me get some fish. I waited over half an hour and looked for him all over the store. I found him outside the store walking around. He gave me his usual fake smile and said he would be right there. 5 minutes later he showed up and helped me. The process took only a couple minutes and I was out. Why do I have to wait so long every time I go there? Honestly, I experience this with most of their employees almost every time I visit. My girlfriend won't even go to the store anymore because of how long we wait in there. They are also short with you. One time I purchased a German Blue Ram from them. I have a 56 gallon tank (going strong with healthy fish) and this ram died over night. I acclimated the fish to the water and checked the water parameters which were completely fine. I could not find the body of the fish. Some of the other fish must have eaten it. I had a few blood parrots living with my rams and assumed that they had eaten the dead body. Anyhow, when I confronted the owner about this he began shaking his head before I could even explain what happened. He has seen me coming in for years and purchasing fish from him. So I was shocked that the one time I had a negative experience to share he wouldn't even give me the time of day to listen. I had to actually remind him that I come in all the time and have never said anything like this before. He finally agreed to give me a DISCOUNT for a replacement fish... About a week later I decided I would get rid of my 3 Blood parrots. They were getting too big for the tank and I did not have the money to invest in a larger tank/new filter/ etc. When I brought them to the store, the owner for the first time came to me. He couldn't wait to take the healthy beautiful parrots off my hands and put them into his cash tanks. He barely said thank you and priced them each at 39.99 - 49.99. I decided before I left that day that I would get an Angel Fish that cost about $12. He actually charged me $12 for the angelfish. No discount, nothing. I thought he would give it to me for free since it was such a small price and the fish I had given him were worth so much more. Not to mention the next day one of the fish I gave him got sold. I would imagine all of them sold at this point. They were beautiful and healthy fish. This guy is the stingiest person I have ever met. But I still didn't feel like that would justify a negative review on Yelp. So I didn't write one until I got fed up with the disease and quality of the fish he was selling. Animal Care/Cruelty: There are plenty of fish that I have purchased over the years from Aqua Imports (Angels, Blue & Gold Rams). All of them have died within a few months of purchase. The first time it happened I thought it was my fault. I checked the water parameters of my tank (I do this weekly) and found the parameters to be well within a healthy range. The temperature was right for Angels & Rams as they like their water to be a bit warmer than most other tropical fish. I could not understand why they kept dying. Even the fish I purchased at Petsmart and Petco are still living strong. I began researching and learned about how some stores purchase their fish from unhealthy fisheries. These fisheries create genetically weaker fish because of how they care for/breed their stock. They reduce the health of the fish because they dye/hormone inject them. I've noticed that aqua imports sells Injected rams because rams should not be that colorful at a few months of age. They naturally get colorful later on. However, this store doesn't really care about the health of their fish. I've also noticed that they sell painted parrots (which do not exist naturally and are dyed fish). This tells me that they definitely buy much of their stock from these fisheries as they cut all sorts of corners to mass produce colorful fish. I found that even the German Blue Rams I purchased from Petsmart have done much better than the rams here. Eventually, I found a German Blue Ram breeder who sold me a ton of rams. All of which have no health defects and have lived full healthy vibrant lives. I find it sad that this cheap store owner is selling weak fish, it's not right to the customer or the animals :( read more

I bought 2 fish and a snail from this store totaling $106.65. Two of them died two days after we got them and the third died 3 days after we got them. I live in Denver and was not sure when I would be able to drive back up there to return the fish so I froze the fish. I called 5 days after I got them (The day I knew I could drive back to the store to return them) and was told that Aqua Imports has a 72 hour return policy. The staff was very friendly and informative when I was buying the fish but when I needed assistance later on I was S.O.L. Any one who has ever maintained aquariums knows it is not a cheap endeavor, nor do the expenses end when you walk out of the store. I will not be back to this store do to the simple fact that I drove from Denver specifically to shop at their store and because of the fact that I traveled to shop there I have lost $106.65 + gas + time. This is one of the few mom and pop pet stores that has reptiles! They have a somewhat exotic selection, which is all too exciting. I'm tired of finding ball pythons and corn snakes- these guys have rosy boas, tree vipers, green tree boas, and a bunch of other uncommon snakes. I'm in the market for a new snake, and I'm sure that I will purchase him or her from this store. The staff knew right away which snakes were eating, how long it had been since they had been in the store, temperament, how long since it had eaten, etc. These guys really care. The store space is a little small and crowded, that's really my only complaint. The crickets here are huge- my tegu is able to catch these guys, and I don't have to feed her nearly as many. This store also has live rats and mice- and they gave me some great tips for getting my little girl to transition over to baby mice. They are super helpful, and seem to genuinely care about their animals. Everyone I talked to has multiple species of pets living in their home, which shows that it isn't just a job to them. This store also has a guarantee for their animals' health- I was going to purchase some corals from Exotic Aquatic, but there is no guarantee- which could be quite costly should they perish due to preexisting health issues. I am so glad I discovered this store today- it's well run, and the owner is not behind the scenes- he's right there helping people, like all of his other employees. read more

This place has been wonderful do the past 5 years I have been going there. The new management is a problem. I recently called and asked if a part on a defective product had gotten in and the manager on the phone told me he wouldn't look for it and that I had to call the next day for mike. Overall Aqua Imports is a pretty decent store, but there certainly is room for improvement. The selections they have are huge and most of the staff that has assisted me so far have been really knowledgeable and helpful. They have a very large variety of livestock despite the cramped space that they are working with. There saltwater livestock is always perky and beautiful. However, I have noticed quite often that the freshwater side is not of the same quality. I have not purchased a fish that did not survive or anything, but a lot of the tanks have some dead roommates that I feel should be cleaned up and the cause diagnosed. The current handwritten labeling system that they have in place for the fish is confusing, hard to read, unprofessional looking, and sometimes not up to date. Legible printed labels, I feel, are the way to go. They do not have a big selection of live aquarium food but make up for it with their assortment of frozen food. From an aesthetics standpoint the store is not very welcoming, especially the livestock section of the store. I feel that some new flooring, new paint on the walls, and better overhead lighting would go a long way. Despite these few short comings, I will continue to buy my aquarium supplies from them because they are the best there is in boulder! read more

As much as I love the fact that this is the only store I know of in the Denver/Boulder area that gets in a wide variety of hard-to-find fish, they also seem to excel at selling sick fish, thanks to not quarantining the new arrivals for an appropriate amount of time before selling them. Of the 5 times I've shopped there, I ended up with ich twice. After the first time I thought it was a coincidence, but by the second time it was clear where the ich had come from. So if you're going to buy any fish there, make sure you use a quarantine tank first, cause they clearly don't. read more

i finally had gotten the tank of my deams, but was having a hard time finding the fish of my dreams.i called alot of lfs stores in the metro area and no one carried them nor did they seem to be very interested in helping me find them. untill i called aqua imports the owner took the time to listen to what i was looking for and had me bring in a list which he has taken the time to check each week. he has brought in exactly what ive asked for and they are amazing fish. i cant even express how much i apreciate the owner and staff of aqua imports for going out of there way to help me find what i needed and deliver the quality and price that fit my budget. thank you aqua imports i will be a return customer for years to come. read more
