My mom and I could not work in the yard because it was a rainy weekend. I had driven up from San Francisco to help her with her immense yardwork. So we drove from the elk Grove area all the way out to Rockland to visit the store for the first time and we were not disappointed. Incredibly clean and well laid out store. The tanks are well-maintained and not overcrowded. Lots of ample parking and two of the nice gentlemen were working the day that we visited. My mom and I each purchased some fish and I purchased some decor. We were already super thrilled with this store when the unthinkable happened my mom I noticed looked like she was crying and when I ask her what was wrong I heard her blood sugar monitor go off. It was below 50 the picture you see was taken after the doughnut one of the gentleman at this location saw my mom was in peril and quickly acted and had the other gentleman working in the store bring up his snack bag of powdered sugar donuts, which saved the day I was able to get my mom back on track and some real food in her afterwards, but these guys definitely go above and beyond firstly with an amazing store and secondly with generosity thank you folks so much. We will definitely be going back to the store, even though it's well out of our way it's nice to support businesses who support their community and strangers, especially in a time of need. read more

I like this place over Aquarium Depot. They have a pretty good selection of freshwater fish, aren't as busy, and there were lots of supplies and food options. The best part is the prices. Everything was much cheaper than the other large Aquarium store I mentioned. The staff were friendly and attentive. The store itself is a little dated, but I think what they don't put into aesthetics, they pass onto the customer via better pricing. read more

Aqua Life Aquarium/Golden State Discus. What a great Aquarium store. I drove 4 hours to check out their Discus selection. Could not believe the variety of Discus they had in stock. Went home with six beautiful adult discus. Nolan the store manager was so helpful and knowledgeable. He packed them carefully for the four hour drive and they arrived in perfect shape. A few days later I decided I wanted two more and they shipped them overnight and arrived in perfect condition. I can't describe what beautiful Discus they have and how healthy they are. For the last 3 weeks, I've been driving to different cities looking for discus fish and other things. I've gone to San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento and little cities in between and I don't know how I missed this place...they had everything I needed at very reasonable prices. I comparison shop and what I found was they were actually priced the same as Amazon. Not only did I get what I needed without the wait but I got some self care in too because the drive was very peaceful. They have a large variety of fish as well as frozen and dry fish food and equipment. The customer service was great and the young lady took pride in what she was doing. My Discus were triple bagged with lots of water and oxygen and snugly placed in a cooler box for stable transport. When I made it home and acclimated the fish to the tank they started swimming immediately which leads me to believe they had minimal stress. All this being said, I can honestly say that I've found my new aquatics store. read more

It all started during the pandemic "pond life" I came here after research back in 2020 and bought my first set of wakin goldfish. Nolan helped us and it was the beginning of the fish life for us. After 3 years we did lose some. Not of our fault. Once again Nolan was there to help us through this tragic situation and helped us figure out to save what we had left. We were down to 1. We got things straightened out after a rare Aeranomas gram negative bacteria. Usually caused by birds. Once we got things good again we returned and purchased some shubunkins. This place is a very clean and caring of the fish establishment. Nolan is your go to guy. He's extremely knowledgeable and he cares about the customer and the fish. I came into this place of business looking to buy multiple saltwater fish for my aquarium. While in the store for 20 minutes, my family and I were not acknowledged or asked if we needed assistance. The Three families that came in after us were greeted, assisted, and polite conversations were had before we decided to leave. Being a business, this is not the way to treat customers whether you think they are going to buy something or not. When my wife asked why we didn't receive assistance, the employee said we did not flag him down. When she replied that he went to other customers to ask if they needed help before we had the opportunity, he stood there with no reply. A friend and I stumbled across Aqua Life Aquarium while running an errand. Parking is easy to find in the large lot they have. They carry it all. Accessories, aquariums, fish, food, and more. They have freshwater and saltwater fish and some beautiful corals. I've been to countless aquarium stores over the years, and this was definitely well maintained. The fish all appeared to be happy and healthy. I was very impressed with their selection of items and even found an aquarium and stand I've been interested in for a bit that I've never seen anywhere else. Unfortunately, I was already busy today. They were super helpful and have a good selection of fresh and salt water plants and fish! I also browsed the reptile section and they have a good selection as well! I did buy some plants that did infest my tank with snails but that was my fault for not quarantine them before hand. I'm still learning. The parking was great and the store looked clean. I can't say much about prices as I haven't been to any other local fish stores besides one in rocklin. I would definitely recommend checking it out! I will say with ALL the fish or pet stores I have seen def need a better set up for beta fish! read more

Definitely enjoy coming to Aqua Life Aquarium. We didn't set our initial tank up through them, but we have come here numerous times for fish. Of the couple aquarium stores we've gone to for fish, the ones from Aqua Life seem the most hardy. They've been our healthiest and have survived the longest. This is a little ironic seeing as I find more dead fish in the tanks at this store than anywhere else. The staff are really nice and have been helpful the few times we've come in here, but it's clear that almost none of them have any clue about 90% of the fish they're selling. The last three times we've come in it's been very clear that we know more about the fish we're looking at and want than any of the staff... that being said, it's our tank and we've done our research ahead of time (a lot less fish for us to remember than them). I would definitely encourage getting your tank stocked from here. They lack just a touch on the tank setup options, but their fish are great and we've been really happy with what we've gotten from them the last several years read more

Since then we have visited a number of times and plan on countless more visits! We decided on ordering the Red Sea Reef tank and was delighted to discover that Aqua life offers a maintenance service! Took all of our concerns of setting up the fish tank away from us surely. Hubby put the cabinet together with the pump however everything else was completed by Aqua Life. We have also used their vacation service which brings much peace of mind so that our fishes are well taken care of when we are away from home for more than one week. I came to this place just to check out a new store all the way from Sacramento, this place isn't too bad but there are some dead fish that I felt bad for, especially that blue tang laying on its side struggling to move! One fish that caught my eye was the moorish idol, 'Gill' from Finding Nemo and it looked beautiful yet there was only one. They basically had almost every fish from the movie, if not most and it was pretty cool. I'm assuming they're known for their discus because there was a section just for them. Some were so large that it was kind of scary being so close to them! The prices varied but they were beautiful. I purchased some live plants that were really nice and healthy which was worth it. For the employees I assume you all would remove the dead fish if you saw one, and there wasn't anyone in the store but they didn't seem to mind it. read more

My recommendation is to NEVER buy dry stock from these people. It should already be a red flag when they only have a 7 day warranty and don't even try to assist other than pointing you to the manufacturer. Here is the situation. 90 days ago I purchased a 37 gallon tank and stand from their floor. It all appeared to be new and unused - for about $500 then about another $1000 in heaters, pumps, filters, stands, food, fish and plants the usual. Yesterday after returning home I was met by a massive water damage and the front of the tank shattered without warning. All the fish dead and water everywhere. So, I give them a call so I can start getting a new tank setup and what was I told? Well (Dillon?) laughed and said "happens occasionally" the best I can do is give you the manufacturer's phone number. I asked for some assistance from the shop to have someone from service assist with seeing what went wrong or even store credits to help get a new tank back up and running. Again. Laughter. So I asked to speak with the owner. I was met with laughter from both Lynda and Doug both saying no. I asked to come down with the broken product to assist with seeing what went wrong and was told "they would call the police if I came" Interesting business practice. I understand if it comes with a warranty, I should read the fine print etc. but for such a fluke incident it would be nice if they would even allow someone to come look at it and see if we can figure out what went wrong so it doesn't repeat. Aquarium Depot isn't much further way - much better staff and ownership that put customer service number 1. ***in response to Doug.*** That's interesting Doug because I don't recall you being present for the conversation. While in the neighborhood getting some personal business attended to, my boyfriend and I noticed a small aquarium store down the same street as Sacramento Koi was located. Of course, being a fish hobbyist, I had to check this place out. When we first walked in, I was visually impressed by the pretty saltwater and reef aquariums with many live specimens on display that were practically front and center. Definitely a great marketing strategy to attract customers further into the store like me! I couldn't wait to explore deeper into the back rooms where more interesting fish were being housed. But as we continued our fish gazing, I started feeling the atmospheric temperature inside this store getting to be above my comfort level. Not knowing if it was one of my hot flashes, I asked my bf if it was actually as hot in here as I thought it was! But he agreed that it was uncomfortably warm. I still wanted to keep browsing, so played off the heat like I always do when suffering through the dreaded hot flash syndrome - nothing is wrong; I always have that drenched look! Proceeding further to the next room, we found rows upon rows of smaller size tanks with smaller quantities of fish, invertebrates, and crustaceans in each. This made it easier to study them closer for their appearance, hardiness, habits, and how they got along with their tank mates. I was impressed at the large variety of species on display in many beautiful colors and patterns that attract us fish lovers. Prices are comparatively average to other shops I've been to, but it didn't seem like they had as much of a variety of aquarium supplies and maintenance products to select from. I could be wrong about this since there was another side of the store that had the freshwater fish section which I missed out on, but I just couldn't continue anymore due to the warm climate inside. Feeling hot and sweaty is not a pleasant way to shop. Went in for water and salt and ended up leaving with some banggai cardinals. The level of customer service is great from start to finish. Brandon helped me find the right fish and checked for any ailments on each fish. After inspecting the healthy fish Nolan made the transaction smooth and made sure I had everything I needed. Update: Now 5 out of 6 are dead. The only survivor is the larger 4 inch discus. My other breeds of fish are doing great. As a indicated before, I check my water everyday and change the water weekly. Aqua Life refuses to refund or credit us for the dead fish which we're obviously sick. It was heartbreaking watching them struggle when all my other fish were swimming around them. We are very disappointed we drove 2 hours there, 2 hours back, and spent so much money on dying fish. read more
