My family fell hard for a beautiful five-year-old dog who had a story of multiple adoptions and abandonments. When we visited her, she seemed more worried about running away from the shelter than being near humans. Not knowing much about abandoned dogs and their behaviors, we thought this was normal and went on with the adoption process. In the office, after having filled out the paperwork and handing over the $135 fee, our new dog attempted to attack two other dogs who came in after us. The only thing keeping her from doing so was our teenage daughter who was holding her leash. None of the employees came forward to help. In fact the only thing we heard from the shelter staff was that they didn't get paid to be there and that they were all volunteers. We told the woman in charge that their website did not say our dog had a problem with other dogs. She just shrugged and said she had never exhibited that behavior before. But since we had no other dogs at home, we took her anyway because we wanted to be her "forever home." She was in our home for three days and in that time, bit both my husband and me and exhibited aggressive behavior with toys and food. So we had to return her to the shelter. The staff denied knowing she had any behavioral problems but they accepted her return anyway. The shelter staff obviously knew nothing about this dog even though she had lived there on and off since she was a puppy. We have subsequently learned that all reputable shelters test dog behaviors such as food and toy aggression and behavior toward humans before they are put up for adoption. It would have taken 30 minutes for them to determine whether or not she should have been adopted; but they didn't bother. Whether they volunteer or get paid, people's lives are in their hands and they should take their "jobs" more seriously.
