I love this place. I frequent every aquarium store within 20-30 miles of Philadelphia, and this store has no competition. I've been going to Aquarium Center since the 90s. It was good back then and has only gotten better. The store is clean, the employees are friendly and helpful. I don't believe I've ever waited more than about 5 minutes to be helped. The freshwater selection, as well as aquatic plant selection are both great. Lots of variety in both as well. I'm assuming the same is true for their marine stuff, but as I don't keep a saltwater tank, I really have no idea. It's a bit of a hike from the western suburbs, but it's well worth it. read more

This place is great! Don't think of it as just a retail store - think of it as an adventure! We have a 35 gallon salt water tank (Red Sea Reefer 170) and we visit Aquarium Center regularly for equipment, corals, and fun critters. The staff is knowledgeable and if the person helping you doesn't know the answer to your question, then they'll find someone who does. They'll recommend how to care for your tank and your corals, troubleshoot any problems you're having, and they're even great about taking back fish that are not jiving with your tank (i.e. - aggressive fish who attack the other tank inhabitants). We've brought a couple of 6 Line Wrasses back because they were beating up on my little Kobe! If it has a face, then it gets a name! One of the things I love about this place is the wonderful diversity among their customers. People of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities visit the store and share in the love of this fun hobby. It's a place of harmony! Their corals are always healthy and their prices are in line. There is ample parking and there are a few restaurants in the stripmall, should all that aquatic action make you hungry. Bought a beta fish, it died 3 days later. I went into the store to ask questions as far as the fish and care for it (mind you, I had beta fish previously which never died in 4 days). I was told by a very rude girl at the register, that it could have been shock and they don't do anything for dead fish, pretty much dismissed me and moved to the next customer. I have purchase a 50 gallon low boy fish tank that cracked. i worked with them and the manufacturer and they agreed to exchange it even thought the policy is no exchanges on broken tanks. I have been doing business with them for over 10 years. they are very polite and knowledgeable on the fish and equipment. I love the selection of fish and when my daughter comes up to jersey when have to go and see the selection and always have to buy some fish. Will always do business with them. read more

Stay away!! Not sure what happened over the years but they don't care anymore. I'm 41 and have been going here since I was a teenager (used to play mini golf next to old place). I called today about a fish that died and they said they don't guarantee salt water fish. It wasn't in the tank for more than 48hrs. 65 bucks down the drain (literally). I'm done with you guys. Worst store to get your fish. Workers are NOT helpful. Waited and waited for someone to help me get a goldfish. Finally got the manager behind register and told her all I need was 1 gold fish. She showed me to the goldfish tank and said pick one. She did not tell me this gold fish cost 50$ That SHE showed me. . All I wanted was a basic gold fish for no more than a$1. When I realized how much I was charged on my credit card and told them about it they put me on hold for 30 minutes. Then got back on phone very NASTY an told me they could do nothing about it!!!! I've been to basically all of the LFSs in the south jersey and Philly region. Aquarium Center has the best selection of south American and African cichlids. Their plant selection is also very good. The fish are generally in better condition than the other stores and the tanks are clean. They usually have some interesting salt water animals and a lot of coral. Dry good selection is ok but not great. My daughter loves to go there to look at the fish. It's where I buy my fish and plants nowadays. Prices seem reasonable. Staff knowledge is dependent on the person but with cichlids you really need to do research before you go anyway. They get busy on the weekends and it can take a bit to get helped. read more

Refund/replacement policies are ass backwards. Sensitive shrimp who can "die if you breathe on them" as the employee said, are $6 each but unrefundable? Even with a perfectly fine water test and bringing the shrimp back in a bag. Very frustrating to know and be able to prove that you didn't kill your fish/shrimp but can't get a replacement. Makes you feel like they take your money and tell you to f-off. read more

I've been keeping fish aquariums for over a decade now. I've seen all of the stores and would like to offer some advice: If you are at all serious about keeping fish and you don't want to be the Pol Pot of fish hobbying, I strongly suggest you go to the Aquarium Center in Blackwood. Most fish stores have staff that are completely clueless. Most fish stores have diseased tanks. Most fish stores don't separate their fish into acidic, alkaline, and brackish water conditions. The aquarium center does all of this and more. I even make the drive out from Philly to go there. I recommend that you do that same. read more

I am a serious aquarium enthusiast and been to most if not all of the local pet stores in the Philadelphia / South Jersey area. The Aquarium Center is by far the best one of the lot. This place takes great care of their livestock. Whether you are buying goldfish or something delicate like a discus you can be sure they were well taken care of here. I have never seen dead fish sitting in their tanks. They also have special hospital tanks set up that are separate from the rest of their filtration system to house sick or hurt fish. The staff seem knowledgeable enough for me to have an intelligent conversation with about all aspects of keeping aquariums. Even when they are swamped with customers they will still take the time to find out what you need. If you are a serious hobbies this is the place for you. read more

The customer service sucks! A young girl who worked there precipitately threw a step ladder at my feet with no pretense after I asked for help. I'm sure she intended to hit me and slightly grazed my feet. Another employee, who's was sagging his jeans and had his hood on tried to walk through me! Most of the employees I have met are hostile and pretentious. They discriminate on which fish you can return for store credit too! Agree this is the place to go if you are a serious hobbyist. They have a very good selection of critters and even had ammano shrimp in stock when I got there. Excellent advice on solving problems like algae growth and care of the more finicky species. They do charge more and you get what you pay for at this place. Just excellent. read more

South Jersey definitely lacks its fair share of fish stores. Aside from Petco and Petsmart, there really is no dedicated fish store. I came to this store on the recommendation of one of the Petsmart employees. The store itself is large enough with a good stock of a variety of fish. The prices of the fish seem fair, but it is by no means a bargain. I ended up purchasing a dozen rummynose tetra for close to $30. I placed them in my tank of discus and they (tetras) all died within 2 days. Every last one. Unfortunately, I needed to head out of town that weekend, so I was unable to return the fish, as they only guarantee their fish for 48hrs. Next, I called to see if the store could help me bag and oxygenate my discus that I was planning to ship across the country. Sure, they were willing to do so, but at a fairly unreasonable price: $20. $20 to inject oxygen into a plastic bag? Sure, I understand that O2 isn't free and that these fish stores have to refill their tanks, but c'mon...$20? I was taken for $30 for sub-par quality fish, so I wasn't about to give them another $20 for oxygen. Limited selection in south Jersey, so you might be stuck going to this place. I would recommend checking out fish stores in Philly for more reasonable staff that won't try to fleece you for a 2 minute service of putting O2 into a bag. read more

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2016: They are moving this month! I don't have the new address but I was told that it was in a shopping plaza just a bit away near an Italian restaurant. I'm sure they will be updating their website with the new address. I still love this store and still go quite often. I live 1/2 hour away and drive past a lot of other LFS on the way (you know...Petsmart and the like). This place is worth the drive. If they don't have what you are looking for, ask to be put on the email special request list. The tanks and equipment that they are currently using in the store are for sale! They keep everything in good condition so this is a good bargain. I just purchased one of their Reefbrite 6-foot long LED lights for a great price. I just have to wait to pick up until they are actually moving, which should be soon. The one thing that I don't like is.....hang on to something or sit down..... they will NOT be having their Show Tanks in their new store (I was told by an employee)! Nooooooo!!! I LOVE their show tanks! They have them in all sizes with all kinds of fish and plants... Another reviewer mentioned it was like going to an Aquarium, not just a store. They were right. It is one of the many things that makes the store special. I find their Show Tanks to be Inspirational! They give me ideas of what to do. I am sure that people spend more money in their store when they see what can be done. I'll bet it also makes the employees happy because they can show off what they know and express their artistic side. Let's face it, aquariums in the home are not just fun to watch, they can be ART, too! To the Owners: PLEASE keep the Show Tanks! For the shopper: I did see that they already have some new displays. First Update: I have been going to the Aquarium Center for at least a year now. I have purchased a lot of fish and supplies. I used to have a 35 gallon hex years ago and ended up giving up the hobby when my son was young. He is in his 20's now and I'm back in the hobby. I started out with a 3 gallon, then a 5 gallon, then a 10 gallon, and then I purchased a 65 gallon. About a month ago, I bought a 180 gallon with 2 overflows and a sump wet/dry filtration system. I guess you could say that I'm back in the hobby. I have gone to several aquarium stores in the area over this time period but I keep going back to Aquarium Center and have purchased most of my fish and supplies from them. I still love their show tanks. They are inspiring. I am on their email list so that I can get updates. I have gone into the store with lots of questions. I try to research the fish I want to purchase (water conditions, habitat, food, etc., which is 1/2 the fun) as much as possible before I make a purchase. Aquarium Center has a wish list where you can request fish for them to order. At any rate, they have been very patient with all of my questions and have taught me a lot. They have never been rude. They are also not pushy. In fact, I have had to seek the workers out sometimes because they are so busy with taking care of the livestock. All of the fish I have purchased have been very healthy. They always quarantine the fish and will not let anyone purchase them until they are ready. I have never had any problems. They have a fantastic filtration system there that serves multiple tanks with valves and backups that allow any tank to be isolated if there is a problem. I have never seen evidence of a problem when I have been there. I did note that there were a few times that I purchased a fish and found that I could have purchased the same type elsewhere for less money. However, who knows if there would have been a problem with the purchase of the fish from a place that would not take care of them as well. I would rather spend more money and have a very healthy fish than spending less and getting an unhealthy fish. UPDATE: August 2016. The new digs are great. So glad they kept show tanks. Awesome fish store with an amazing selection. The store feels like it's half retail store/ half going to the aquarium. I drive around 20 minutes every week or two to pick up some new stuff and I'd drive much further than that. Great selection of Malaysian driftwood, plants, as well as community fish and cichlids. Been buying there for more than 20 years until 1 night I came home from work & all my salt water fish were dead. I was told by a employee that someone poisoned the water which I supplied jugs for. They were waiting for a truckload of salt water shipment. I never went back until now. This past sunday I purchased a 50 gallon breeder tank. for my turtles. They put it my car. Got a phone call saying I either pay a additional $42 for the screen or return it. The owner called me to say that although the box was clearly stated the screen was included that it was changed in the store & I said it was not my fault. It was the children working there. I returned the screen. The owner DOM is a real A-HOLE. He dosen't know anything about customer service, if so he would at least give a discount because I had to drive 30 miles to return it.
