very disappointed with this beautiful piece of halibut steak I bought. Brought it home and cooked it up on the barbecue with a little bit of olive oil salt and pepper. Absolutely tasteless. As far as I'm concerned, this is where high quality seafood in SLC starts, middles, and ends. Yes, your local grocer has some good stuff. Yes, there are some other specialty shops in the valley, but when you're after the good, fresh, of reliable and non-sketchy origin, Aquarius has it going on. Located on 300 S, it shares a wall with Caputo's so you're definitely in fancy food territory. It's a teeny little spot, with just a small freezer up front, and a long refrigerator case showing off the latest catches on ice. You'll notice right away that it's not just your mama's fish. Sushi grade salmon and tuna, sure, but it gets a lot more interesting from there. You should take some time to talk with the staff. They're a wealth of knowledge about what's fresh, what's coming soon, what they have, and what to do with what they have. They were pretty honest with me on my last visit--come back tomorrow after our next shipment and you'll be blown away, our case is pretty empty right now. I'd rather have a case that depends on the latest flight in then a bunch of fish past their shelf life. Fresh is king. Make a few visits over the seasons and watch the case change. Ask questions, experiment, and live that fresh seafood life, even in SLC. read more

This fish store is located in the very heart of downtown. In a little gathering with other stores and restaurants, Aquarius Fish Co is in the left corner next to a restaurant, I believe. There is only a single door for entry, so it's a little difficult to find at first, but not too bad once you find it once. It is pretty small. Just a "one lane" kind of width store, however, within the long line of glass walls and fish, there are all kinds of seafood. From tuna to salmon to octopus, there is everything you really need. I always buy my sushi-grade salmon from this store and normally the price is about $20 per pound of pure sushi-grade salmon. The service is normally quick and I have never come in when there is a line. It is straight forward. You browse the line of sushi on the left and pick what you want. They cut about how many pounds or ounces of fish you want and weigh the amount. They give you a sticker with the total amount and you go and pay near the front of the store. That's it. That easy! Every time I have bought sushi-grade fish from here: - I have never gotten sick! - I have never been "ripped off" and have always paid a fair price! - I have always enjoyed the fish! read more

I just can't express how much I love this place! I wish I could go more often, but my husband is allergic to seafood so I can only shop here when he is out of town. :( So, seafood in general is expensive. I always end up spending more at Aquarius than I intended, but due to their reasonable prices for high quality products, I end up with several meals' worth at a great price point. The fish I've purchased has been sushi grade, and absolutely delicious! I am never let down by the king salmon. One time I asked the staff if they could slice it for sashimi for me, and they happily obliged. They also have incredible sea scallops, which are always my go-to. The crab and lobster meat have been great additions to meals, and I have made sushi and poke with their tuna. The last time I visited, there was a kind older gentlemen shopping also. The way the staff went out of their way for him, kindly patting his hand and remembering his regular order, melted my heart. I've never witnessed such caring service before, and I will always remember this experience and how happy the gentleman was as a result of it. LOVE living so close to Aquarius. I frequent once a week and always look for the scraps tub of the NZ Salmon, it's the best bang for my buck and gets me two nights worth of sushi. You'd think I'd be perfect in rolling sushi for how often I practice, but I still suck. The fish makes up for it though. Never had a bad experience. One of the best things about SLC are these guys. This is definitely my go to place to get sushi grade salmon whenever I'm in the mood for some simple homemade sushi. I have them de-skinned, and deboned the salmon and I put them on those tiny rectangular seaweed with rice plus some wasabi on it. I personally love their new zealand king salmon although it's a little pricier than the other salmon BUT definitely cheaper than Japanese restaurants when you order a sake don i.e. raw salmon on top of a bowl of rice. Service is friendly and I like that I can go in and ask for half a pound of salmon which comes to less than $10. And with that portion, I still have some leftovers after a meal. And sometimes, when I have a little bit left, I would feed it to my neighbor kitty who always visits me and I swear that he thinks it's crack! read more

Nice to have a fish market in SLC. Selection for sushi grade is normal. I ordered a few different fishes for sashimi. When I returned home I weighed the fish because it seemed less than what I ordered. The salmon was suppose to be 1 pound but I received 11 ounces including the skin and plastic wrap. Unfortunate when you are paying 21-28 per pound and order enough for the family. I hope they start using scales. read more

It's not like there's great competition here in Utah, but Aquarius is definitely your best option for fresh seafood. A few months back I was on the hunt for Sablefish/Black Cod, and couldn't track it down anywhere. I'm sure some other type of fish would have done the job, but I was stuck on that particular variety. At first I avoided calling Aquarius because I figured they'd be pricey, and they are compared to grocery stores and their ilk, however it's not unreasonable, and worth it for the selection and quality. They are located right next to Caputo's downtown location, and while the shop is small, they have adequate space for a good variety of seafood. When I called ahead they were kind enough to hold my fish for me, and friendly when I picked it up. I won't do all my shopping here, but when looking for something special, or if I ever manage to work up the courage to attempt making sushi at home, I'll certainly return. read more

I purchased some sushi grade fresh Ahi to make Hawaiian Poke ( pronounced Poke Kah) bowls. I love this place! I love their fresh northwest seafood. We were less than pleased with our visit. We went in and right off the bat weren't ecstatic about the place. We were waiting nearly 15 minutes for service, and not because they were busy but because there wasn't anyone in there. But whatever, the gentleman that helped us was friendly and knowledgeable. The prices are fine. Selection, of course, is variable with season, availability, and deliveries. We got home - opened up our lovely sashimi grade tuna and were UNHAPPY to find that had already turned. We went from store to home - so about 20 minutes. There is absolutely ZERO reason that dish shouldn't have been fabulous! We called the store they were kind enough to offer a refund. We picked up a couple different pieces or fish. All of which when opened proved to be on their last legs. So, needless to say we were done. I can only hope we caught them on an off day. read more

A gem nestled away inside of Caputo's, if you close your eyes as you walk in you can almost let yourself believe you are closer to the ocean. Fresh fish is brought in daily from the airport and the glorious pieces on display are packed to perfection, not letting that pesky fresh water wreak havoc on the salt water fish. I was craving sashimi and saw this place come up on Yelp! Got 3 lbs of salmon and 3lbs of albacore. The guy was super friendly and skinned it for us. They also have ice bags to help keep it cold (even though it was below freezing outside at the time). Good for a couple of dinners at home. It came out to be somewhere around $60 which is only like $10/lb! This place has a really nice selection of seafood. Lots of different sashimi fish. Lots of types of salmon. I was on a mission to find fish suitable for sushi, a daunting task in a landlocked state. I've tried (and failed) to find fresh, flavorful fish in the past and finally came across Aquarius Fish Co in my searches. I made it in after work, about half an hour before they closed. Although they have several different and sometimes exotic options, I was looking to purchase 3/4 of a pound each of tuna and salmon. The gentleman behind the counter was incredibly helpful, assessing my needs and made a recommendation for a New Zealand King salmon. This guy clearly knows his fish. That was hands down the most delicious salmon I've ever eaten, and was wonderfully fresh, as I understand seafood shipments are flown in daily. He was also kind enough to pack it on ice for me, as I had a 40 minute drive home. It's not cheap fish, but it's also not cheap fish, if you know what I mean. This is not your grocery store seafood department, nor is it the asian market variety. You truly get what you pay for, and I couldn't have been more thrilled with the product. It's not easy to find, but it shares a wall with Caputo's, and is up on the second level of the building on the left side. The prices are on the steeper side (figure about 20% higher than the mid-level grocery stores like Harmon's), but it's well worth it for the quality and peace of mind. The fish mongers are very knowledgeable and are willing to cut your fish to your precise specifications. The selection is pretty interesting with lots of unusual fish from the Pacific Rim, whole fish like branzino and snapper, and fresh shellfish. If you're traveling with your purchase, they will bag it with ice to keep it cold for you. They really do go above and beyond to ensure your overall satisfaction with your purchase. Surprisingly, Aquarius carries more fresh choices of fish and seafood than I've seen in some coastal shops. If you need sushi-grade selections, PEI mussels, soft shell crab, bay shrimp or scallops, and even seaweed salad, Aquarius can hook you up. The inventory here is gorgeous and fresh. This is the desert state of Utah. You will not get away from here without spending some serious clams. But I'm here to tell you it's worth it, mates. Went there for the first time during the holidays. I purchased some shrimp and lobster claw meat. The shrimp were very good however my tub of claw meat was not all claw meat. It was not even lobster - my guess is king crab. I did go back to provide feedback and they quickly offered me another container which was wildly different than what I purchased two weeks earlier. Great seafood market tucked away in downtown Salt Lake. Bought 4 eight oz hand cut AHI tuna steaks and the service was great. The fish???? Fabulous. Marinated and quick grilled and served with garlic roast potatoes and asparagus. The guys in the store were friendly and welcoming. And the selection of fresh fish was extensive. Absolutely the best fish in Utah. If I was in Seattle, San Francisco or New York City I could get bigger places with more selection, but not better quality. As others have said, it's the only place to be getting fish for sushi or sashimi. Talk to them because it's not all about tuna and salmon. There are often other choices that are not as obvious. The only place for great fish in Salt Lake. If I am going to grill salmon or make a shrimp pasta, I will get that at my local grocery store but I am going to sear it or eat it raw, this is the only place I go. Every time I go here they have fresh hamachi, yellowtail, scallops, and salmon and I have never gotten anything here that I would trust eating as part of my homemade sushi dinners. There staff is friendly and helpful and their prices while not cheap, are reasonable given the very high quality. As a side note, I agree with Eve about not buying non-fish items here. Head to one of the many great Asian markets for that. read more
