The food was great, just seemed the staff preferred to talk to each other instead of taking care of the customer. I had to ask for sides and ask for my tortillas and salsa. Drinks sat empty for 10+ minutes. Maybe it was just a case of the Monday's. Pretty disappointing from a best of state... 1. Had to ask for silver ware and napkin after 10 minutes of sitting. 2. Had to ask for tortillas when main entree came out, didn't realize I was missing rice and beans too that came 15 min later after I asked if they had any other salsa... 3. No explanation of the dish that was dropped off or how to eat or what it is. Just very much like here you go and good luck have to ask for everything. 4. Had to ask for drink refills after being empty and clearly lots of staff just standing there talking to each other. Pretty good. Waitress was nice and gave good recommendations. Ambiance is fun. Reminds me of Puesto in California. I enjoyed the appetizer sampler, guacamole, and carnitas plate. My mom said her food was really good. We shared the butter cake with ice cream which was probably my favorite butter cake Ive ever had. The problems: Chips were not my favorite and some of them were too peppery. Margaritas lacked alcohol (maybe its b/c of Utah's liquor laws) but really wasnt worth it. I'd go back and with now knowing the negatives that took it down a star, I might take it up a star by skipping those. read more

Started off with the watermelon basil mezcalita. I loved the tajin rim and the flavor was refreshing and sweet and very easy to drink. I ordered the shrimp ceviche and the carnitas sol agave bowl. Unfortunately the ceviche came out very late (after my sol agave bowl which was supposed to be a main). Honestly, k don't really mind that the dishes did not come out in the correct order but I know some people are sticklers for that. The ceviche was a nice delicious sour app. I loved the flavor but it wasn't particularly amazing - would say it was average. It was definitely still tasty though. The sol agave bowl was delicious. I ordered the carnitas with it. The carnitas was very flavorful and tasty with a nice tender texture. It was not dry at all. The portion was absolutely massive and I ate so much chips and salsa and ceviche that I was able to save the leftovers to be full for dinner the next day and the leftover were still delicious!! I went on a Tuesday night without a reservation and our group of four was seated right away. The chips and salsa were a standout right from the start. You can tell the chips are freshly made, and everyone at the table loved them. I ordered the cheese chile relleno that came with a small side of rice and beans. It was a bit spicy for my taste, but still very flavorful and delicious. My friend loved the chicken fajitas. You can come semi dressed up, and I heard this was a more formal place but I came in after a hike and didn't feel out of place so casual is also fine. It was hard to pick one thing off the menu. We got carnitas and chile colorado which was plenty of food, especially after the chips and salsa which really meant chips, juicy spicy salsa, and beans with queso fresco. Despite knowing that I'd be really full, it felt necessary to get another round of the salsa/beans. The entrees came out in a few minutes. They don't shred the meat here; you get presentable chunks of meat with your sauces and tortillas. Mexican food this good is weirdly hard to find around here and I can understand it's a more upscale place but be prepared to pay a little more than you think. read more

I'd hate to leave only three stars for this beautiful restaurant. So for the ambiance and service I'll add a star. I was disappointed with the Sol Agave bowl I ordered. It really lacked Any flavor and I added fish that I found to be incredibly overcooked. The guacamole trio was good. The discerning factor is typical of SLC. You often go to a Mexican restaurant in search of that great Margarita. Well, you won't find it here. My companion ordered a watered down sad version of what is supposed to be a fun, celebratory drink, what a disappointment. My Mojito was maybe one notch better but that's a stretch. I knew not to order a margarita after seeing the sad drinks left on tables. If you're a non drinker you'll likely enjoy SOL Agave. read more

Highly recommend this place for some fancy Mexican food. My favorites are the enchilada with mole and al pastor, followed by the sugar cane filet and salmon. The enchilada is packed with carnitas (pork) and the mole sauce with a little sour cream on top is pretty good. The carnitas taco in the combo is not great tho, very dry. I wonder if you could order the enchilada only. The al pastor is well seasoned and tender. It has pineapple, cheese, onion. Would be nice if it comes with some carb. The sugar cane filet is a small piece of steak over rice, topped with peppers, but my favorite part of the dish is the sauce. It really enhances the flavor of the dish. Salmon is moist and the mango sauce is sweet. I don't like how they don't chop off the bottom of the asparagus that is not edible.. Octopus is good but the sauce is more on the sour side. Mixed ceviche has fish, shrimp, octopus. Shrimp and octopus are definitely cooked, the fish seems to be cooked too. The sauce is super sour and spicy. Their butter cake is sweet but very good. Very disappointing! Service is not good. I'm sitting here at the restaurant writing this review now. I figure since I've been here for an hour, don't have our food, chips are gone, water glasses are empty, I have time. Monday night, not super busy, and our waiter hasn't been back to check on us. My wife got up to go grab a pitcher of water to refill our glasses since no one is checking on us and everyone is thirsty and out of water. Oh....our waiter just came and said the kitchen was laughing at him because we got the water ourselves. Not sure why the three servers that were just standing around didn't help us? I asked him if our food was almost ready and he said there is only one order in front of us and our food should be out in under 10 minutes. What?! How could we be here for over an our now and our order isn't in? We had reservations for the main dining room and they sat us in the sol room which looks like it used to be a patio that they enclosed. Since it's February it's cold in here and everyone has their coats on. This sucks. Well after 1 hour and 15 minutes we got our food. The positive of the night is the food was good! Really unfortunate experience at sol agave. It seems that it is becoming pretty popular and there's often challenges with keeping up with expectations amidst growing popularity. When we arrived we immediately noticed a very large crowd of people waiting outside of the restaurant. There was a few heat lamps (only one working) which tells me that they may have been overbooked for a few weeks or so now. We made a resy and we were told that despite our reservations we were 11th in line. This was challenging because I had a friend who needed to get home sooner than later. We were seated about 30-45m later. To summarize the food, it was pretty awful. See pictures for my tacos falling apart making it impossible for me to lift them up despite it being two tortillas. Excited that there is finally a closer location! Place is a bit on the pricer end but the quality of the food is amazing! So just plan on spending a little more. First time getting the ceviche here and I thought it was refreshing and flavorful. My go to is the tacos de hongo! This is a must, the steak with mushrooms is yummy! First time ordered the enchiladas de langosta aka lobster. Liked that the sauce was a very creamy. The mar y terra is more on a sweeter taste. All entrees amazing. Can't go wrong with any of them. The only thing that made the experience good was the tasty food. First, we waited 15 minutes to even get water after we were seated. That should've been foreshadowing for the rest of the meal. Second, my boyfriend found a piece of aluminum foil in the salsa. Third, there appeared to be a bug that crawled out of his lamb shanks. Fourth, the restaurant was hot and my dad was sweating. I was excited when Sol Agave opened a location in downtown Salt Lake City. I had visited their location at LA Live in California and loved the food, atmosphere and service and was hopeful they brought that vibe to Salt Lake City. Yes indeed they did bring it. They have on site parking which is complimentary and a rare thing in downtown these days. Also you can reserve a table through Yelp which ensures you can dine on your schedule. We were greeted and seated within a few minutes of our arrival with a choice of inside or outside seating. Due to the heat we stayed inside but the patio area looks lovely. Started off with a house margarita and mojito to accompany our chips and salsa and bean dip. Both were very tasty. They have quite an large bar area with a full menu of beverages. We decided to share the Sol Agave Salad with steak and the Enchiladas de Camaron. The portions were significant and the salad came out so fresh and colorful and a full steak was sliced on top of the salad. The house dressing on the salad made all the flavors just pop. The enchiladas had huge prawns inside and a nice spicy kick to the sauce. We loved both our entrees and unfortunately were so full there was no room left for their famous Butter Cake which we will try on our next visit. read more

I don't think a restaurant has ever fallen from grace this quickly. Sol Agave has gone from being a favorite to someplace we will not be returning to in record time. Things have been going downhill the past few times we have eaten here but I chalked it up to an off day. I could forgive the inconsistency, I could forgive the outrageous prices, but I cannot forgive being lied to. The Mar Y Tierra is listed on the menu as an enchilada containing filet mignon topped with shrimp in a sherry wine sauce. I have ordered this many times in the past. When I ordered it last Saturday, not only was it missing its normal double tortilla wrapper, not only did the shrimp not taste fresh, not only did the sauce taste completely different than usual, but the meat inside was definitely NOT filet mignon. It was some sort of slow cooked shredded beef. I get that times are tough but do not lie to me. Change the description on the menu but don't charge $38.00 and tell me it's filet mignon when it isn't even steak. If you think your customers won't notice the cuts you are making, you're wrong. read more

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants and the food quality has gone down terribly. I had to send my steak back twice to be cooked properly, first time it was well done when I asked for medium rare, second time it was fully rare, total disappointment and it was my birthday. I ordered the mahi-mahi taco and couldn't eat it because the fish was extremely chewy, so I ended up just eating around it. When the server asked how the food was, I told her the mahi-mahi was chewy and that I was eating around it. Her response was simply, "Oh," and nothing else was offered. The taco wasn't taken off the bill, and no replacement was suggested. When we paid, she apologized again and said it wasn't very good, which only made it more confusing that nothing had been done earlier. Our group had a great experience here with our waiter Lalo. Cocktails were delicious - we all got different margaritas - and the group shared appetizers including pork belly bites and the cazuela de queso. I wish I'd taken a picture of my entree because it looked amazing - the sol agave bowl with chicken - but it was so flavorful and the chicken so juicy that I devoured it. For dessert, the butter cake is an absolute must have, and they brought my friend the tres leches cake for her birthday which was good too. Would definitely return! read more

Sol Agave is a high-end Mexican restaurant in SLC. The restaurant is beautiful and the chosen lighting was classy and perfect. With a reservation, we were seated quickly and attended to efficiently ! The pricing of the menu is - in my opinion - a bit overpriced for the meals we receive. We got the shrimp taquitos to start our meal. LOVED the flavor of these bad boys. However the dish comes with 3 jumbo shrimp taquitos for the price tag of $18...$6 a piece ! Flavor was amazing but pricing is insane. We shared a Sol Agave Para Dos. A shareable meal, to which tortillas are free when needed. Though this dish was full of variety in meats and vegetables, the flavors were all different. I think it could be shared with more than 2. The meal is large, advertised for two, but could easily be shared between a group of 4. It was extremely filling and was still a full plate, it seemed, by the time we felt done. I would definitely recommend Sol Agave to people - for a one time visit at least. But again - high high prices with payoff that doesn't quite meet that. With a nice ambiance and great service, Sol Agave is still making waves in SLC. read more
