Mountain Motors Auto Repair - Bad radiator

    Mountain Motors Auto Repair

I was up in Mammoth for a weekend camping trip when my car started overheating on Saturday afternoon. Being a weekend, almost every shop was limited or completely closed. As I waited for the engine to cool down, I decided to try my luck calling local shops, and Nancy with Mountain Motors was the only one who answered. Even though they were technically closed, she told me that if I could safely drive it the 10 minutes down to their shop, they'd take a look. I filled it with coolant and made it there without issue. It turned out to be a bad radiator. Because it was the weekend, we checked around and realized a replacement part wouldn't arrive until Wednesday. I spent the rest of Saturday and Sunday trying to figure out my options, including checking towing costs to get the car closer to home, which was going to be incredibly expensive even with my AAA. Throughout my initial indecisiveness, Nancy was so patient, helpful, and supportive. It was clear they had my best interests at heart, so I trusted them and decided to leave the vehicle in their hands. Not only did Mike repair the radiator, but he did it in a timely manner and even pointed out a few other maintenance items I should keep an eye on. My biggest issue was logistics, I only had one specific upcoming weekend available to make the trip back up to pick it up, or else it was going to be very difficult for me. They managed to squeeze me into their tight schedule to make it work. To top it all off, when I returned, dropped off my rental car at Mammoth airport, they even offered to pick me up and bring me back to the shop. Overall, Mountain Motors provides unmatched service. Mike and Nancy are an amazing team who genuinely care about helping people!

We went to Mammoth motors auto repairs and Michael was very kind. He checked out my Ford SUV and found that the right front tire had separated due to the heat of the desert being 109F. I brought my Audi in to Shorty's for a routine service and to see if Rob could help me out with the catalytic converter codes I'd been running. The Audi mechanics wanted to replace the catalytic converter and the o2 sensor, which would've cost several thousands of dollars. Rob was super honest and upfront with me about Audis not being Shorty's bread and butter, but that he could help by giving it a diagnostic, figure out what things needed attention, and decide if it was time for me to shop around for another car. In the end, he recommended that I shouldn't default to replacing the cat or the sensor and hypothesized that it was a vacuum leak, also putting together a list of priority items--which Nicole explained in detail--for my independent euro car mechanic in San Francisco to go through and replace with Audi parts. My mechanic in the city read Rob's report and agreed with everything, remarking at how thorough it was. It turns out, the car did indeed have a cracked vacuum hose. He used Rob's notes to fix all the other little things that needed attention, and now I'm back to having a perfectly running car with 160K miles on it. It's really nice to have a shop out here that can pinch hit for this kind of troubleshooting and, even if they prefer not to get into some things themselves, provide a real honest and detailed diagnosis of the likely causes and solutions are. We're lucky to have them.

They just earned a new customer! They were very knowledgeable on the phone and instilled confidence immediately. They said they could take a look at my car if I brought it by. They ended up keeping it and I got it back in two days! Shorty is very knowledgeable and explained to me everything that he did and why. There is nothing wrong with my former mechanic. But a couple of weeks is a long time to wait. They were just so above And beyond on my expectations at Shorty's. I'll never think twice about heading there again.

Outstanding customer service!…read more John came out after our transmission overheated in our truck with slide in camper on a Saturday afternoon. My truck was too big for his truck so Mark from CCA came out and towed us back to the shop in Independence. Mark drove me to Bishop to buy parts to flush the tranny that night and let us spend the night in the camper in the yard. Next morning while Mark worked on a van in the bay I flushed the transmission on my truck and we were on our way. If the flush didn't work, Mark was willing to let us drop the camper in the yard and he would drop the transmission, haul to his favorite shop where they generally do a three day turnaround, and reinstall the transmission so I could pick up the truck and camper the following weekend. Mark does not enjoy working on Mercedes FYI.

The tow truck driver suggested we take a tow back to California City Auto. I am extremely careful with how I choose mechanics and will go pretty far our of my way to stick with reliable mechanics I have used in the past. I couldn't find much online about California City Auto but it was looking like it was my only option considering I also had a trailer to think about towing as well. We started to load my tundra up on the tow truck when the mechanic (Marc) showed up to help put it on the tow truck. It was a two man job since my truck was basically sitting on the floor not attached to a tire. Marc is a real "ma n pa" kind of operation (minus the ma), not only did he show up to offer us help at 6:30pm, but he also hooked my trailer to the back of his personal truck to tow back to his shop. That same evening,  I gave him cash for the new ball joint and he drove to Bishop to get the part so he could bang it out first thing in the morning. (Cost an extra $100, but at least we wouldn't have to wait days for the part to show up) In the meantime, he let us camp out on his property, and showed us where the good food was, offered us power and access to his restrooms. The next morning, he couldn't get the tie rod to release from the spindle, after hours of trying, he opted to just cut the tie rod and wait another day for that part to come in, then put her back together. We weren't stoked on this option, but it was what it was. He offered to tow our trailer to the campground to make the best out of our stay. And how nice it was! The next morning, about 9:30 AM, he came rolling into our camp with the truck all fixed up and ready to go. We feel so fortunate to have had Marc our "only" option. He is a nice, honest man and I'd be glad to go back in the future.

Brett, the owner, and his helper Jared were both incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything they found without ever making me feel pressured. They serviced my transmission and also tracked down and resolved a fuel/air gap issue that had been causing problems. Instead of just throwing parts at the truck, they took the time to properly diagnose the issue and fix it the right way. It's obvious they take pride in their work and stand behind it. Finding a mechanic you can truly trust is rare these days, but Brett and Jared have earned my confidence. They were friendly, transparent, and communicated throughout the entire process. My truck is running great, and I won't hesitate to make the drive back for future service. If you're looking for an honest, skilled, and dependable mechanic, I highly recommend Jim Allen's shop. I made an appointment with him for Monday July 6th and delivered my truck to him. Brett also diagnosed the swishing sound and unfortunately for me, the Ram needed a rebuilt transfer case. We left Mammoth on Thursday, July 9 and drove 314 miles to SoCal without any issues. I highly recommend Brett at Jim Allen's Auto-Matics in Bishop, CA.
