BigTex MetalWorks Review / Final Update…read more After time on the pit, the smoker cooks extremely well. Airflow, draw, and cooking performance have been impressive. I expect some post-delivery adjustments on a custom build. In my experience, several quality control issues went beyond that. - The Tel-Tru gauges were not even hand-tight and were close to coming out, and once secured, they still needed proper clocking. - The custom front shelf support arm bolts were finger-tight, with one nearly coming off and the other able to be unthreaded by hand. - The counterweight support bar had exposed open square tubing at the top that could collect rain, and I had it capped and sealed. - The butterfly air intake valve would not reliably hold position, so I fabricated an adjustable tensioner. - The insulated firebox needed pressure relief provisions. When asked during the build, that went unanswered. At delivery, I was told a portion of weld would be left for relief, but neither of us could locate it, so I added provisions myself as a fail-safe on both the firebox and the insulated firebox door. - Several smaller details also needed cleanup and finishing. Communication was a challenge throughout the process. Updates were hard to get, and responses were often slow or absent. The builder requested to mail the remaining undelivered portion of the agreement while delivering the smoker, saying it would go out that same week. That week came and went. He acknowledged it and apologized the following week, said it would be handled immediately, and still has not responded to follow-ups including my final request for an update as of yesterday. It has now been three weeks since delivery. There were also multiple delays. I was originally told late January to mid-February, and actual completion and delivery were in early May. The pit cooks well, and some fabrication work is solid. But integrity, communication, follow-through, and final quality control matter just as much on a build like this. FINAL UPDATE: After additional discussions with the builder regarding the remaining unfinished portion of the build, we ultimately could not come to an agreement. This portion of the build had been discussed multiple times throughout the process over several months. Because of the amount of conversations and changes throughout the build, I was willing to simply cover any additional labor/material cost and move forward. Around final delivery/payment, I specifically asked if there would be any additional cost. I was told the final build price would remain the same due to other quoted items that ultimately were not able to be included on the smoker because of design changes, and the builder agreed to still complete the remaining portion of the build. That portion was not completed in time for delivery, so the builder asked if he could deliver the smoker and then ship the remaining item the following week instead. I agreed to that in good faith. At no point during that conversation was separate shipping cost discussed. After multiple additional delays, follow-ups, missed commitments, and communication gaps, I was later told the unfinished portion of the build had never been included in the agreed price and that I would need to pay shipping in order to receive it. At that point, I fabricated my own solution and decided to move on from the issue entirely. My opinion on the smoker itself has not changed. The pit performs extremely well. Airflow, draft, recovery, and overall cooking performance have been impressive, and a lot of the fabrication work is solid. However, my opinion regarding the business side of the experience also has not changed. Communication throughout the build was inconsistent. Multiple commitments and timelines were missed or changed. Follow-through and accountability were the weakest parts of the overall experience. In my opinion, standing behind commitments matters just as much as the fabrication itself on a custom build of this scale. I'm leaving this review up so future buyers can make a fully informed decision based on both the quality of the pit and the overall customer experience.
