I have gotten box braids and Senegalese twist done here. Chantal braids my hair. They take appointments and it usually takes about 6-8hrs for a full head of braids. She has a nice selection of R&B music that is appropriate and her space is always clean, which is very important to me. If she receives a telephone call during my appointment , she usually keeps it very short. I appreciate that very much. I live south of Chicago; therefore, adjusting to prices was something I had to do, but she provides good services. The building needs some work; particularly in terms of the bathrooms. I have emphasized this to Renee because I think it is important for clients to feel comfortable in an environment; particularly when they are paying for services. Renee does not own the building but I have been assured this matter will be handled soon as the bathrooms are currently being remodeled. I have become very fond of Renee. She has found a great style that works for me. I usually wear interlocks as the style flatters my face. In addition, the style allows me minimal time to get ready in the morning. I am very busy and this style works for me. Renee educates me about my hair as well. She is always encouraging of my natural beauty and we have very interesting conversations about many topics. I got my first full sew-in weave from this place so keep in my mind I had no idea how it was supposed to be applied or how it was supposed to look when finished. I was introduced to a woman named Sunette and scheduled an appointment with her for the following day.I arrived at the shop bright and early,gave her my picture and crossed my fingers. Her first mistake in doing my hair was how she braided it. She braided my hair into a circle which cut off ALL access to my scalp. I told her beforehand that I had severe scalp issues but whatever. The second issue with her braiding is that when my hair grew out, it became pointy at the top and "grew away" from my scalp making it look like I had some sort of deformity that I was trying to cover up with oodles of hair. Not a good look. I bought Bohyme brand hair for this particular installation because if I'm going to have somebody else's hair all over my head, it needs to be REALLY REALLY nice hair. I bought 3 packs of hair for her to use,two packs for the main platinum blonde color and another pack of a darker blonde to cover up the tracks. She ended up using 2 1/2 packs of hair (which I now know is way too much for a little head like mine) and subsequently caused the daily catastrophe that was trying to detangle my hair every morning. When she was finished, I admit I thought it looked nice at the time. That night I went to get food and realized I could not see through my bangs. She had cut my bangs very straight and blunt and they ended at about the tip of my eyelashes. What the hell? I had to go to Hair Cuttery in Munster to get my bangs fixed because at that point I was just fed up with her. Over the next couple of weeks trying to style and keep my hair from tangling was a personal hell I never wish to go through again. I had layer after layer after layer after layer of hair on my head and there wasn't a snowballs chance in hell it would have ever stayed straight. So much for spending $300 on tangle-free hair. I hate the music this store plays. It is the most repetitive uppity music I have ever heard and it hurts my soul. The next place I went to get my hair done showed me all the ways she erred and I honestly believe this woman has NO business being in a hair salon. There's no way a professional hair-stylist would have ever installed or braided hair the way she did mine. Stay away from this fraud.

Since I liked the looks featured in their style gallery online, I decided to give them a shot (I mean it's just hair; it'll grow back, right?) and before I could talk myself out of it, requested an appointment for highlights and a haircut with master hair stylist and color specialist Kimberley Hood. I am so glad that I did! Kim was quick to accommodate my schedule and (recognizing that I was a little nervous) listened carefully when I told her what I wanted. She suggested a couple of minor changes to my cut, taking time to explain what she was doing and integrating the changes gradually based on my comfort level. (Yes, she was right. The changes she made were perfect.) My color, too, was great. Full highlights with a base lift that was just what I wanted. And get this: Kim trims her clients' bangs between haircuts for free! How great is that? As for the salon itself, it's very clean and very comfortable. The services they offer include electrolysis, which is performed by Barbara Harmison. I've had electrolysis before and have long wanted to have my brows done, so I quickly booked an appointment. Barbara is incredibly professional and very gracious. I've seen her half a dozen times so far and I'm thrilled with the result. She has shaped my brows beautifully (I didn't even realized I had over-plucked my left brow pretty dramatically until Barbara pointed it out to me). She takes great care to prep the area she treats, numbing the skin to minimize discomfort and following up with a cooling after-treatment and aloe vera application. (When I've had electrolysis in the past, I typically left the session with beet red skin and prolonged sensitivity. I've had none of this with Barbara.) As noted, I've been back to Kimberly K multiple times since my first visit. If you're looking for a cut, color, and/or electrolysis (they offer other stuff, too, but these are the services I've had personally) and you're particular like me, I encourage you to visit Kimberly K. The technicians we had our services with were Staci, Kelli and I believe one other woman where we booked Bridal hair and makeup. On my first visit with Staci unfortunately the makeup turned out so poorly it was recommended I go with someone else to complete my look. Communication: after we created our appointments and I had requested airbrush makeup for my look I was very surprised when Kelly confirmed my appointment and did not do airbrush but she promised me it would turn out beautiful so begrudgingly I went ahead. Hair- unfortunately even though I had shared we were going to be dancing quite a bit and I have thick hair that does very well with a good amount of hairspray and hair pins, each of our hair fell within just a couple hours. It was quite sad as of course we had a photographer to capture this day. We were constantly fussing trying to push the pins back in and trying to salvage the updos. Makeup- I was positive that the pictures were going to turn out flawless because the look when I left the salon did look very nice and overall was what I requested with a few adjustments and recommendations on my end. However once I received all of the pictures back I noticed how glaringly awful the raccoon concealer looked under my eyes. It is incredibly obvious that my skin is almost three shades a different when picked up by the photos. I am so sad about this our only recourse is to pay to photoshop all the photos I am in. Overall this place is really cute and I really wanted to like it I really enjoyed working with Kelly but unfortunately the quality of the work that came out of everyone's experience was all of our hair was ruined within less than half the night and unfortunately all the professional pictures we took were ruined by how my makeup showed up on camera. Back story per the customer: After not being able to get anyone on the phone The customer drove to the shop. The owner Azuka opened the door while on the phone she told her that I she had to call for an appointment. The customer told her that she tried but only got voicemail ( The voicemail tells you not to leave appointments on voicemail ) so she decided to come in person and make an appointment. Azuka gave her an appointment and about 5 minutes later Azuka called and said she had to cancel her appointment that she gave her because (and I quote) "my energy with her was not going to work". So let me start by saying that my soon to be mom is one of the kindest people I know and I have never seen her get angry or not show grace to anyone. With that being said she is amid about supporting BLACK BUSINESSES. Facts: 9.5% businesses in the United States are black owned. Eight out of 10 of them fail within the first 18 months. I went and reviewed this particular business website to find that this place has been in business for almost 20 years! Also , to say the least their mission statement mentions "well-recognized in the community for professional, high quality beauty services and cosmetic products". Keyword : Professionalism I highlight professionalism above because black businesses lack it as this particular one did. We need more black businesses and entrepreneurs so that we as black people can become and stay wealth builders for generations! As a business owner please think about your own biases and how they would reflect to your customers that are supporting you. Consider how you can do better because without our support your business cannot be successful without it. ALWAYS STRIVE TO EXCEED YOUR CUSTOMERS EXPERIENCE OR CLIENTS EXPECTATIONS AT ALL TIMES, WHENEVER AND WHEREVER POSSIBLE!!! When a business provides consistent excellent service or products, a consumer will become a loyal repeat customer, regardless of the distance, and they will also help grow your business by referring others. I have a wedding coming up and I was looking at hiring a black owned business to service me and my entire bridal party but after listening to this testimony I shall try somewhere else (black owned) and I hope I won't receive the lack of professionalism that was mentioned above because .....that wouldn't work well with my energy.
