Great food, great service. The curry pan and sandwiches are both amazing, but definitely save room for dessert!

I loved the cakes I got from here. And the lady (I didn't catch her name unfortunately. The cakes were distracting) was very welcoming and helpful. I got a little excited with it being Valentine's day and got one of every cake they had available. (Caramel, Coffee, Strawberry, Tiramisu, Flan with fruit and Green Tea) They were nice and light. Nothing was extremely sweet, but I wouldn't have minded that either. The lighter taste seemed perfect, though. I also got a cheese bread and curry bread. I'd never tried curry bread before so it was interesting. Not amazing, but still good. The woman at the counter made sure I wanted each cake when I said "one of everything" which I think was nice. She was also pleasant to talk to and made sure that she got me a slice of green tea cake that they didn't have sitting out in the front display. I felt a little bad making her get me each slice, but she was really careful about placing them in the box and I'm so grateful. She was also simultaneously very pleasant to the two guys waiting behind me. In short: lovely light cakes that aren't too sweet and nicely creamy. Breads are also good. Great service and really pleasant. I'd definitely get one of each cake again. read more

Classic Asian style cakes. Light, flavorful, not too sweet. Green tea cakes are amazing. Perfect green tea punch with no bitterness. Coconut cookies are likewise a very pure coconut flavor and are buttery yet light. Iced coffee was excellent. Service was efficient and friendly. We found them on Yelp when we needed to order a birthday cake for my daughter's 12th birthday party, AND needed a place that was open later on Saturdays (being open on Sunday was a definite bonus). My daughter wasn't convinced--she's watched too much Cake Boss and wanted fondant on her cake. (they don't do that) Short of spending $250 for cake, we weren't having much luck. We were going to leave, but decided to try some cake from the display. WOW!!! My daughter fell in love with the strawberry cake. Not only was it light and delicious, they were willing to put on the design my daughter wanted--a My Little Pony character. They just told us to bring the picture and they would do their best. Their best was AMAZING!!! My daughter was overwhelmed, they had done such an awesome job! Nearly all the kids (and ALL the grownups) at the party loved the cake. Arai Pastry is a rare (perhaps lone) breed in the Valley: a genuine Japanese bakery. The fare is classic Japanese - with iconic items like caripan (curry filled rolls), strawberry shortcake and shokupan (white bread) - that appear to be made from scratch. What Arai Pastry lacks in quantity - they only stock about fifteen different items - is more than made up for in quality. As in Japan, the baked goods have much a lighter taste than typically found in America or Europe. You won't find any Cheesecake Factory-like edible mortar here; and that's a good thing! read more

I have ate here quite a few times for lunch since their bread is so soft and delicious, especially love the teriyaki sandwich. They also have pretty decent pastries from the ones I have tasted. The two brothers that work the front counter are ok to work with, one is more personable than the other. Now my complaint is not over the service or the pastries but more specifically, a wedding cake I recently ordered. I went with my fiance to look at some options and they had only a few pictures of some decent wedding cakes. We wanted to see more examples but didn't really have any and practically insisted on us bringing in a picture of one to make identical. Now this is where it got interesting, the cake I gave them a picture of was white frosted with black icing design and red flowers. They let me know the red may not come out that dark which I was fine with. Turns out they couldn't even give me black but dark brown instead. So I have a dark brown and medium pink decorated cake and that's not even the worse part. The fact that it looked nothing like the picture I provided them and would barely be passable at a child's b-day party, but certainly not a wedding. I'm just glad I didn't select the next level (3-tier) one that would have required them to bring it out and have to pay substantially more money, which this one was expensive enough as it was. The cakes was just so simplistic, not anywhere near wedding caliber, tiny for a wedding cake due to probably portion sizing for Japanese vs Americans I'm thinking. This size claimed to serve 30-40 but more like 25 at most if everyone has a small slice. Anyways, I ended up not taking the cake but only the mini cakes I ordered to go with it and let them keep the whole deposit, even though it was twice as much as the mini cakes should have costed but thought it'd be nice to compensate them a little for their time. From the pictures I saw they do pretty good kid b-day and fruit cakes that are quite colorful, but yet they told me they don't work with a lot of color. I just think they should just get out of the business of doing wedding cakes altogether. Not to be mean, but I picked up an all white coconut cake for under $20 at Sam's Club that looked a whole lot better and only a fraction of the price ($16 vs $140). read more

I always order their Ramen Salad. It's the only place I've found that has it (I would prefer a saimen salad but ramen will do). Basically, it's a japanese noodle salad. it has ramen noodles, shredded lettuce, shredded sweetened scrambled eggs, cucumbers, ginger, and a light asian dressing. Absolutely wonderful! read more

I'm really disappointed with this place. This is expensive and the services is not good. I went in person to order a cake from them to be picked up in 3 days. The cake choices and design are really not like what you see on the review here. When I asked what flavor I can order, they said I can only order strawberry short cake flavor. I then asked about the cake design, they said they can't do any special decoration. They eventually Just have a few strawberries on top which a 5 year old can do. I was thinking for a small 8" cake which cost $40, the selection should be much better than that. Since I went, I ordered anyway. And when I picked up the cake, I also wanted to buy some bread. They said the bread just came out of the oven and couldn't put them in plastic bag. I asked if they can put the 6 small breads which I'm going to buy into a to go box, they said I need to pay $3 more!! With the cake and the bread, it's cost over $50 and I can't imagine they need to charge me $3 for a cheap styrofoam to go box, which cost them maybe $.05? Don't go there, it doesn't worth it. The cake just taste like regular strawberry short cake which you can buy anywhere. You can get much better cake else where, even with less cost. Worse than that, you have planned a party and the cake doesn't come out to be what you wanted, and you ran out of time then when you realized after you've picked up the cake. read more

Some of their cakes (like earl grey and green tea) are not made fresh and are frozen overnight. They put them in the display to defrost them. So if you happen to buy them early in the day, they're still hard and frozen. Most of the time they don't slice the bread for you saying that the bread is still too soft to slice. They even make you handle their loaves in their way. I was holding the tray in one hand and I picked up the loaf carefully with the other hand. One of the brothers told me that I should hold it a certain way because the bread is very fragile and he 'fixed' the loaf right there in front of me. One time I saw that there were at least 2 of them working in the back. One of them told me that in order to slice the bread, he would need to lock the door because he was working alone, so he refused to slice it. It was a lie because I could see the other person working in plain view! Customer service is definitely lacking and they treat you like they don't need your business. read more

My daughter and son-in-law first introduced me to Arai. We love their sandwiches as well as their many pastries. I have ordered cakes, pastry platters, loaves of bread from here and the taste if magnificent. I can't say enough about Arai, and then step over to Fujiya and get a Japanese soda - perfect meal! The price of the pastries go up and down depending on the price of the ingredients, especially the bean curd filled ones. This tells me that the bakery passes along savings when ingredients are cheaper, and must charge a bit more when prices are up. I could go on and on about how wonderful the food is here. The staff is always so pleasant and helpful, and I have always come out of Arai a very happy person! I would recommend to anyone to get a sandwich, a light pastry for a dessert and a green tea slushy/malt type drink. Go over to Kiwanis park, sit and watch the birds and the people and enjoy a wonderfully delicious meal. Doesn't get much better than that! read more
